Next week, Coronation Street Icons: Roy Cropper

This new four part series narrated by Sally Lindsay looks back at some of the iconic characters who have walked the cobbles over the years.

We’ll celebrate some of the longest serving much loved cast members and chart their character’s journey and find out what the actors themselves think of their time on the street.

The four iconic characters are Ken Barlow (played by William Roache), Sally Metcalfe (played by Sally Dynevor), Liz McDonald (played by Beverley Callard) and Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson).

The episodes will contain archive footage and new talking heads by cast members past and present.

Episode 3: Coronation Street Icons: Roy Cropper

Coronation Street Icons: Roy Cropper celebrates the most memorable moments and classic storylines of the Street’s eccentric cafe owner over the last 25 years.

Roy Cropper has become one of the most recognisable and best loved characters on television. In this programme David Neilson, the actor who plays him, reveals how he helped shape Roy’s unique eccentricities, and his on-screen wife Julie Hesmondghalgh shares the inside story of Roy and Hayley’s relationship.

The programme reveals David’s first ever appearance on TV in a 1976 episode of police show Z Cars. David reflects on how, at the age of 46, he was preparing to give up acting altogether when he got what he thought was going to be a small part in Coronation Street.

Julie Hesmondhalgh and David reveal the inside story of how it felt to play the show’s first transexual storyline when Hayley and Roy paired up and later married. They go on to talk about the emotional scenes when Hayley took her own life after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

The programme features contributions from cast members past and present including Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper), Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole), Alison King (Carla Connor), William Roache (Ken Barlow) and Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe).

I remember when Deirdre lived in one of Mike's apt.builings. I at first thought he was creepy and I remember her being a little weirded out as well...It's also where we met the Armstrongs...she ended up working at the Rovers and had a child with Terry Duckworth. I can't remember why Deirdre was living there, think it was when she was the "Weatherfield One"...

Roy has been one of my favs for years..love how they softened his weirdness to make him a much loved Corrie Staple!

Bobby, Deirdre had come back from Morocco because Tracy had a drug overdose, then Samir died and she had nowhere to live. Roy was quite weird to begin with when he first appeared in 95. Classic Corrie is up to 96 now and he's recently started helping at the cafe! He's one of my all time favourites, and the script writers have allowed him to remain a nice, honest person.
