Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 20th September

Alya is suspicious of the £50K offer from her brother (Blackadder 1). For those of us who watched Shameless, it's a bit weird to see little Chesney Karib all muscled up. Talking of which, I'd love for Yvonne (Kelli Hollis) to join t'cobbles. Anyhoo, Zee has decided to get a nemesis, in this case Ryan and he starts verbally abusing him in Roy's. Hardly a fair fight. Alya gets all upset and tells Zee to sling his hook but they later reconcile just before he's attacked by thugs and left in the ginnel of doom. Does everyone return to the street with baddies after them? I'm surprised that a representative of the Cosa Nostra didn't follow Ken up from Southampton. Zeedan says it might have been Ryan and PC Plonker Tinker goes off to interview him, but Ry says he was working in the pub when it happened. Zeedan finally reveals to his sister and gran that his ex-wife's father and brothers are after him.

In the cafe, Bernie recommends crystals (healing, not meth) to help Summer with her personal statement for her application to Oxford. Why is it whenever there's a brainy kid on the street, they're going to Oxford (no particular college, just the University of Oxbridge)? There are two perfectly good Universities in Manchester, not to mention Leeds, Liverpool, York, even Sheffield. Anyway, Daniel suggests he assist her with the statement and she then asks him to help with the application. He says no, but then changes his mind. This isn't going to end well, is it.

Meanwhile, on the prison set, Kelly and continue their friendship, until Sharon (Shazza!) comes to visit her and Mia spots her. She tells Kelly that Rick is the reason that she's in chokey since her mum overdosed and died and she ended up dealing drugs. Mia disbelieves that Rick is in Spain and says he must be dead. Kelly contacts Gary and asks him where her dad is. Is Gazza's secret finally going to come out?

And finally, Gemma takes Aled to the group for parents with kids with cochlear implants rather than the deaf playgroup, to Freda's chagrin. Gemma assures Freda that she'll stay in touch with other deaf kids.

I think we're about to discover Freda's backstory. Maybe she's resentful about the way her parents dealt with her deafness which meant she was unable to make friends in either the deaf world or the hearing world. Did we get a hint of her loneliness when she said Norris had friends on the street and she felt left out?

PC Tinker is getting to be a joke. I can't really believe the Police Force would let him deal with his neighbours. They would be concerned about reprisals like a brick through his window.

Poor Kelly, it's no wonder she tried to top herself facing 12 years of looking at those pink triangles on the walls. Are they meant to be friendly and welcoming? They're more like cruel and unusual punishment...

I think Humpty Dumpty is right. 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, and only 1 in 4 of them learn sign language. Which is safe to say that there are a lot of deaf people resenting their parents for not learning to sign.
