Corrie couples, Love is in the air

Nothing beats a good love story. Corrie’s had some iconic couples over the years: Jack and Vera, Curly and Raquel, Jim and Liz, Ken and Deirdre, and Roy and Hayley. So let’s take a look at some of the current crop, shall we?

Steve and Tracy

You know those couples who stay together out of convenience rather than actual love? Well, that’s the feeling I get with these two. I love them both individually, but together not so much. Sure, they bring the laughs, but for me it sometimes borders on slapstick. I’m worried that with Steve, Tracy’s losing her edge. She needs a bad boy, someone who’ll bring out her dark side. Personally I think her best match was Rob Donovan. They were a lot of fun together. A true Bonnie and Clyde with a compelling love story that met its tragic end when Rob got banged up for bludgeoning barmaid Tina McIntyre to death. But nothing’s off bounds in the land of Corrie, surely the powers that be could find a way to bring Rob back for our Tracyluv?

Having said that, I’m starting to warm to the family dynamic of Steve, Tracy, Amy and Emma. So if the writers have decided it’s Steve and Tracy for the long haul, then I hope they commit to it this time and stop having  them cheat on each other every five minutes because it’s so repetitive, predictable, and only serves to undermine and cheapen their relationship to the point I no longer care about it.

Carla and Peter

The saying you can’t help who you love certainly rings true for Carla Connor where Peter Barlow is concerned. Often referred to as the Burton and Taylor of the street, this iconic duo are the car crash you can’t look away from. They’re bad for each other, yes, but there’s also something so right about them to the point where you can’t imagine them being with anyone else.  Underneath all the self- destruction is a powerful love, and I do believe they’re soulmates.

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m a Carla and Peter fan.

Lately they’ve been a bit too quiet for my liking. Come on, Corrie, these two are all about the passion and drama! They’re an all or nothing kind of couple, not background fodder! I’m beginning to wonder what the point of putting them back together was because so far it’s been very dull -- and that’s not something I ever thought I’d say about this pair!

I’ll be posting a short piece on 2-3 couples every week, so join me next time when I unpick the current Platt romances!

If I could rearrange the couples, I would have Steve & Karen; Tracy & Rob; Peter & Leanne; Carla & she hasn't met him yet. At least one of any couple on Corrie has to be played by an exceptional actor. Steve & Tracy will never work for me, despite being Amy's parents. They don't spark off each other in day-to-day scenes. Sure when they have amazingly well written and directed storylines, they are good.

When you get two exceptional actors, like those playing Sally & Tim, it's magic. So Carla & Peter should be fantastic. They aren't because all their spark was about high adrenalin; will they/won't they?, can't live together/can't live apart. By now, they should have relaxed into a passionate couple even if it's just with eye contact. Sorry, but Chris G looks bored to tears.

I completely agree with everything in this article, Humpty Dumpty not so much, wishing Leanne on Peter again, the poor man would soon be back on the booze having to put up with that nagging self righteous fish wife.

Tracy and Rob were great together because Tracy was truly herself with him. With Steve you always feel like she’s trying to be someone else. And, as infuriating as evil Tracy can be (who can forget the way she tormented Carla in 2015-2016), I love bitchy Tracy a lot more than watered down Tracy.

Onto Carla and Peter, for me the best paired couple on the street. Frustrating again watching these two for the longest while now because they have been written into the background and they are not background kind of characters. They’ve built up a great new dynamic these days with a more mature version of both characters, but you just know those traits that make their pairing so explosive are lurking right underneath the surface ready to create some compelling drama. Fingers crossed the writers have come up with something big for them in the coming months that befits their chemistry and the sheer talent of Ali and Chris.
