Sair Khan interview: Alya finds an ally in Sally over Geoff

The last time we saw Alya she had decided to head off to Spain for Zeedan’s wedding without her gran. What made her decide to leave Yasmeen behind?

Alya felt like she didn’t have a choice, she was at her wits end. She’d failed to convince Yasmeen that she was in an unhealthy and possessive relationship with Geoff. He’d been so manipulative and controlling but her Gran just couldn’t or wouldn’t see the truth. There was a lot of anger and upset the last time she saw her Gran and although Alya had asked Ryan to apologise on her behalf they didn’t leave things on the best terms.

How does Alya feel when she returns home and finds out that Yasmeen has been arrested?

She heads straight to the police station and wants answers. Alya’s truly shocked but blames Geoff because she knows how twisted he is and how vulnerable her Gran has been. But when Ryan tells her that Geoff is unconscious and Yasmeen might’ve killed him the gravity of the situation really hits home!

What does she say to Imran? Does he believe her?

Alya lets rip about her feelings towards Geoff and her concerns that Yasmeen has been brainwashed after months of abuse. Although Imran is sympathetic he has to follow the law and right now Yasmeen is admitting her guilt so it doesn’t matter if he believes Alya or not.

What happens when she confronts Sally and Tim?

Alya takes matters into her own hands and goes to confront Geoff in hospital. She wants Sally and Tim to know about Geoff’s various lies and deceits and how he’s rinsed her family business. She’s full of rage but her outburst doesn’t impress DS Abney who seems to be treating Geoff as the victim.  She’s led away by the police but manages to catch Sally alone and begs her to realise that this is so out of character for Yasmeen. She plants a seed of doubt in Sally’s mind about who Geoff really is.

Alya goes to the Rovers and speaks to Yasmeen’s friends, is she angry with them for ignoring the signs of abuse?

Alya wants to scream from the rooftops about who Geoff really is and what he’s done to her Gran. Imran makes a stark warning that ruining the credibility of any potential witnesses will do Yasmeen even more harm. Although Alya doesn’t want to jeopardize her Grans bail hearing she can’t help but scold her grans “friends” about how they’ve failed Yasmeen. They’ve been witness to Geoff's belittling remarks and controlling behaviour but they all chose to ignore it.

How does Alya feel when Yasmeen is refused bail? Is she angry by Tim’s celebratory reaction?

Alya is truly shocked at Yasmeen being denied bail, she’d held onto hope that the truth would come out and justice would be served. She now realises that this is just the beginning of a long fight. She’s angered but not surprised by Tims reaction. The battle lines have been firmly drawn.

Alya, Ryan and Imran seem to be Yasmeen’s only hope to find out the truth now, Alya is a determined woman, what does she have planned?

Alya will stop at nothing to make sure the residents of Coronation street find out what Geoff is really like. Her first plan is to find allies and she may just have found one in Sally.

I had hoped they wouldn’t go down this route. We have seen a wronged woman accused and jailed too many times before. I would have liked the women on the street to finally see through Geoff and come to her rescue.

I totally agree Sue. I was hoping Yasmeen would see the light and get away from him. Not this. Surely Alya should say about the Clare's Law contact with the police? That should be on record?

I'm also disappointed that the writers are again recycling the innocent one being jailed storyline.
Recently after finding out Robert cheated on her with Vicki,we saw Michelle have everyone on the Street convinced that she was 'afraid'of Robert and getting away with framing him for murder so if Yasmeen is found guilty of Geoff's 'murder' when she killed him in self defense,I wonder what sort of message are the writers sending to the viewers particurely those who are victims of abuse?
That it's 'okay' to lie and commit a crime for revenge but you cannot defend yourself from an abuser?!

I just hope Yasmeen doesn't get stuck in prison for the whole of the pandemic lock-down, and the story isn't resolved until filming resumes. I wasn't a big Alya fan before this, but seeing her fight for her gran is awesome. I suspect the truth will come out. I'm surprised so many viewers think this is the end of story for Yas.
