Coronation Street Episode Review, Friday 8 July 2022

Is anything as it seems it should be in t'Street of dreams at the moment?  At Number One a dodgy-looking scaffolder turns up and tells Steve he will erect the scaffolding if paid upfront now. Steve demurs having already paid the dodgy-looking builder, Arnie, up-front in full, yet now the dodgy builder (who came recommended by his wife in exchange for a free cab ride) has gone off the grid - phone line dead and Steve has no name or address. Will it all turn out all right for once?  During it all Tracy threatens to toss Steve off the roof if it does not get fixed - and asks a further pertinent question about the scaffolding!  Steve does later admit that he has paid builder and scaffolder and that he does not think the builder is coming back.

Audrey admits to the family (apart from Gail, they have foregathered in the Rovers at 1pm) that it was all a joke and she is not leaving her vast estate and fortune (Grasmere Drive and a share of the barbers?) to WARTS after all - it was a test of the family!  None of them are laughing and nor were we as we struggled to believe it in the first place. Ken however has told Audrey about David talking to Adam about a Power of Attorney.  Instead she will create a series of trust funds and dear Uncle Stephen will be in charge of handing out pocket money to the beneficiaries when he feels like it.  Oh, and in an aspect which I find highly suspicious, Stephen (who confirms his name is spelled with a ph to Steve McD) is not going to rush off to run his two world-beating businesses but is going to stay around to support Audrey (the Princess). Anyone get the feeling that those two businesses might just need some financial support?

We all thought Stu had reformed but his daughter has apparently moved on without leaving a forwarding address and his present is returned by the new owner and not forwarded.  Yasmeen and Alya are having a day off to add a new chicken to the flock so Zeedan has to do all the work as Stu takes a drink or twenty and starts telling all and sundry jokes instead of doing any cooking. The main beneficiaries of this appear to Alya and Nina who get free meals from Zeedan as an apology for the delays and general unusual happenings in Speed Daal.  Zeedan tells Stu to pull himself together but agrees not to rat him out to Yasmeen.  (I would suggest putting a hole in the hip flask as an insurance policy).

R'Toyota decided she did not want Imran's ashes and now she does.  But Imran's mum Saira has placed them in the cemetery alongside Rana, and Toyah cannot have them back.  Saira tells her that she will eventually move on - and eventually Saira tells her that she will serve time for murdering Imran.  Toyah suggests to Leanne that a little light grave robbing might be just up Spider's street - but he has been arrested for aggravated trespassing in connection with a fracking protest.

The main story this evening concerns the marriage of Fiz bomb and Phill, the latter arriving at the Dobbs' residence and seeing his bride - so we all know things will go wrong.  Phill has some unexpected news - apparently the wedding has been cancelled and the registrar is not available.  Ty is getting the girls ready and Hope does not seem surprised the wedding might be off and under probing from Ty admits responsibility for the emails to Camilla which led to the events in the last episode and to cancelling the registrar.  However the latter is available and the ceremony can proceed.  Ty talks Hope around and she agrees to wear the dress she soaked in wine which allows Mimi to come to the ceremony. Hope insists Ty comes as well.  Evelyn enjoys a glass or two of cava during the pre-wedding preparations so is on the mints at the ceremony dropping them everywhere when asked if anyone has any objections to the wedding.  Fiz misses her vows at one point over being "an unbreakable team" (a phrase Ty had used earlier) but after a pause she regroups and they are married.

But are they happily married?  Fiz looks far from happy and whilst the factory team notice her lack of smiles and as she continues to look even more troubled Fiz asks Phill if they can have a private word whilst Evelyn and Mimi bash out the Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson classic from  Chess - "I know him so well" - check out the lyrics to see why.  There Fiz breaks the news that she has been denying her true feelings and that she had thought she could love Phill - but she knows she cannot.  Phill belts out "Build me up Buttercup" (a performance which Bernie seems to particularly enjoy) whilst Fiz decamps back to the Street where Ty has settled down with a takeaway and he can at long last watch "Zombezi" without interruptions until the bell rings.  Ty opens the door and Fiz declares that she has left him and that she loves Tyrone. The unbreakable partnership is back together.  Ty says he is in the middle of watching something and would she mind coming back tomorrow!  And he loves her too.

It took long enough and I wonder if Bernie fancies a nice large recently refurbished house where quads can be raised with some space?  Will Arnie be back this time?  Is Spider up for grave robbing?  Will Hope believe that her evil ways were responsible for events and carry on even worse than before?  And although not mentioned tonight do we suspect that Yasmeen and Alya will track down Stu's missing daughter? All this and more will be revealed next week on t'Street.

Tonight was written by Emily Gascoyne and Steven Fay (not a "ph" Steve) whilst the Director was Judith Dine.

The thing that got me was when the registrar said 'I now pronounce you man and wife.'
Er - this isn't 1970's!
I would have thought that in 2022, most registers and celebrants would state 'husband and wife'
That term states equal marital status for a straight couple.
What if Paul or Todd got married - would this celebrant say: 'I now pronounce you man and man'?
I thought were were trying to strive for an equal society!

I'm sorry but Toyah had plenty of time to request Imram's ashes after the funeral but she didn't and became more pre-occupied with Spider.
So Saira had every right to bury her son's ashes and it would be sick[and selfish]for Toyah to have Spider dig them up.
Let Imram rest in peace.

Maybe that's what they wanted the registrar to say??

Dullsville Fiz and Tyrone...Fiz and Phill brought something fresh and with potential. Surely, SURELY, we have run out of scripts for this dull whining couple who are, frankly, hopeless parents. Although along with all the other sets of parents tbh.

I was saddened to see Fiz go back to Tyrone after the wedding. I didn't particularily think that they made a great couple, but I really liked his normalness and he's got a lovely smile.
What's going to happen when Alina Pop shows up with the lovechild? That should be interesting.
