Michael Le Vell interview: Kev's trouble with Abi and Jack

When Kevin finds out that Abi is about to be coming home with Alfie it is evident that Jack is not best pleased. Do you think Kevin notices his reaction?

No he hasn't really noticed what is going on with Jack, he thinks he is still happy about Abi and Alfie coming to live with them. The real problem is that Kevin has just taken it all for granted really and is so focused on making everything perfect for them coming back. It isn’t so much that Jack doesn’t want them there, he just wants a bit of his dad’s time and attention. Jack has a lot going on and Kevin is oblivious to it all. He is so excited at the thought of Abi coming home and them being a family he just hasn't noticed.

What happens to make Kevin lose it at the garage?

Kevin has been trying to spin too many plates, everything has to be perfect for the social worker visit. They are busy at the garage, he has been up all night painting the nursery, trying to put the cot together. He has been focusing on Abi, running the business, taking on Aaron at the garage and trying to teach him and then this arrogant Canadian who he doesn't really know comes in demanding his car be fixed, he needs to be at Jack’s leaver’s speech day and everything comes to a head. He also has the issue with Jack playing up at school everything gets on top of Kevin and he just flips his lid.

What was it like filming the scenes? Did you get to let loose on the car?

I got to smash the wing mirror, I wasn't allowed to smash the windscreen because of potential flying glass, also Kevin is aware that he is only smashing things he knows he can fix. Kevin has been so much in the past couple of years and this was just a moment of red mist, but it was great to show him reacting to everything he has gone through.

Usually it is Abi losing control but now there's a chance that his actions could cause her problems moving back home? How does he feel about that?

He is terrified that social services will find out about what he has done and that isn't exactly the right sort of environment for Abi and Alfie to move into so he wants to try and make it all go away without Abi or social services finding out. The enormity of what he has done is not lost on him. He tries to sort it without telling Abi but of course keeping secrets is probably the worst thing he could do especially with everything they have been through. He has stood by everything she has done and he should have known he could tell her.

What goes through his mind when he finds the police at the door?

That is his worst nightmare and he knows that he has really messed up. If they have come to arrest him it is game over for them all with regards to Abi moving back in. His heart just sinks and he thinks ‘this is it, I’ve messed everything up for one moment of madness’.

How does Abi react when she finds out what has gone on?

It’s a real shock for her, not only what he did but the fact that he has tried to keep it from her. When Stephen speaks to them about it he has no idea that Kevin has kept it all a secret and Kevin is mortified. He tries to explain that he thought he could sort it out on the quiet and he would have told her once it a sorted but he didn’t want her worrying.

How does she feel when he has to explain why it happened and what has been going on with Jack?

That is really upsetting for her as he has to tell her that Jack has been struggling with everything and she realises how much her and Alfie coming to live with them has affected Jack and how Kevin has been sidetracked by them all the time.

How does Kevin feel when Abi tells him she is going to give them some space and not move in straight away?

Kevin is absolutely gutted when he finds her with her bags packed, but she is adamant that it is the right thing to do. It is actually Jack who steps forward to try and save the day but it might be too late.

Have you enjoyed being at the centre of these big stories for the past couple of years? Would you like Kevin and Abi to have a bit of a quieter time?

It has been fantastic after almost 40 years on the show to be at the centre of the drama and to be working with such fantastic people. It would be nice though to see Abi, Kevin,Jack Alfie have the happiness they deserve and have a bit of breathing space with this blended family they have got. They do love each other so much and they are determined to make it work and be happy together. But with all the things that they have to deal with life is never going to be dull.

It wasn't so long ago that Jack admitted he misses Abi and didn't seem to mind her and Alfie moving in.So why the change of heart?
I also wonder how did Jack's classmates find out about his 'two fathers'?Hope?
