Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 16 August 2024

Good evening.  If you are the blackmailing teenage daughter of a DS is it wise to admit your crimes to your mother?  Obviously Betsy (LOH) decides that getting criminals off the Street is worth the punishment and encouraged by Mason (!) she reveals some of her activities to Lisa.  DS Swain then swings into action identifying a link between Joel and Lauren and a little later asks Joel to pop into an interview room for a private chat.  He switches on the charm when DS Swain challenges him over messaging Betsy.  DS Swain effectively tries to warn off Joel and he tells her a partial story claiming Betsy had a crush on him.  Later DS Swain drops him off back on t'Street and all seems well between them until Joel turns away - her face tells a completely different story turning from a wide smile to scowl as he departs.

Dee Dee decides that friendly relations with the ex-wife would be good and invites Emily to lunch at the Bistro and gives her a charm for Maeve's charm bracelet as Dee Dee would like Maeve to be a flower girl at the wedding.  Emily denies that such a bracelet exists and that she happens to know from the divorce documents that Joel is still paying for his flat.  This seems a little odd to Dee Dee so as Joel left his briefcase at the flat this morning (having carefully put all his stuff in it) she takes a set of keys and lets herself into the flat and conducts a search finding a bottle of red nail polish.  Otherwise not much is to be found and Lauren is not there.  Back at the flat she observes DS Swain and Joel returning.  She then challenges Joel and she is trying to work out if he is lying.  She shows him the nail polish and asks to whom it belongs.  Joel admits he has been lying.  He admits an illegal sub-tenant (because it is against the law) in the flat and was using the extra income to make ends meet.  Apparently Emily sold the bracelet when Maeve went home and then makes up a pile of lies about Emily.  Dee Dee goes to get some fresh air.  On her return Joel admits it is red flag behaviour and she insists that he has to be honest in future.  He then immediately lies refusing to name the jeweller that provided the necklace charm bracelet.  Like DS Swain she has one face in front of Joel and another as he goes out to get a meal from Speed Dahl.

Toyah is discharged by the hospital and with Nick convinces Leanne to jet off and visit Simon who is at a loose end for a few days.  Rowan is less than amused that he cannot accelerate Leanne to level 8, where you meet Willow, (skipping level 7 completely) and shows his true colours to Nick, saying that he has the flat to himself with R'Toyota.  Sam uses his puppy dog eyes, so sad since he became Hopeless, and Leanne agrees to take him to Rotterdam to visit Simon.  David manages to send Shona a message telling her not to sleep with the wrong sister - the message is meant for Nick and Shona wants to know what is going on.  David admits he was joking with Nick - but Shona does not seem to buy it.  Toyah is sure that they can remain platonic.  David visits Nick to tell him that Shona "knows" and also tells Nick not to let Little Nicky out of his pants.

Tyrone is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea and neither of them are Cassie or Evelyn.  He suggests taking the girls to the cinema tomorrow and then later backs up on it as Alina has said he can see Dorin.  Fiz is not amused.

Paul is declining and sends Kit off to get settled into his new life.  Daisy is her usual flirty self and inevitably Kit and Ryan are at cross purposes.  However Kit has a huge vinyl collection which he is moving into the Rovers and he and Ryan bond over the contents of the collection.  Was the last vinyl expert Lloyd Mullaney?

And in a surprise to the Street residents Tracy returns as she wanted to see Amy and there is absolutely nothing wrong with her and Tommy - no nothing at all, absolutely not all is fine, really good actually indeed super excellent, no need to worry about it atll..  And she does not like Steve's new taste in women, not realising that Cassie is actually Ken's carer.  Tracy and Cassie trade barbs before Cssie withdraws her labour for the day.  I am getting older too - perhaps Cassie could help me put my socks on too?  Oddly Tracy then offers to be Ken's carer - which is surely in conflict with this being a flying visit?  Ken confirms that he does not want Tracy as his carer!!  And indeed all is absolutly fine with Tommy by the way.  Steve buys Cassie an iced bun in Roys Rolls.  In fact no-one seems to be keen on Tracy'luv's return - Cassie observes her return is like finding out that you have COVID all over again.  Later Tracy assures Mary that everything is absolutely wonderful with Tommy O and Cassie returns just in time to make the tea and share Steve's bun with "Kenny" as Cassie calls him.  Tracy insists on making the tea and announces she will be staying for a while dismissing Cassie.

Well the loose ends around Joel look like a net might be forming - his downfall may not be far away.  It was good to see Tracy back and excellent to hear that all is going well with Tommy O; I am a little surprised she appears to be staying for a while.  And will Little Nicky stay in the right place?  All this and more in next week's Coronation Street.

Thank goodness DeeDee is finally using her brain. Emily was obviously sincere.
Fed up with Nick/ Leanne / Toyah. Secret affair is bound to come out. Only question is when.
Welcome back Tracy. But Ken's fall was ages ago. How much help does he still need? No sign of walking frame so surely he can boil a kettle? At first he'd have struggled with stairs but that was never mentioned.

What does LOH mean again?

Hope found the necklace in Joel's car but doesn't know the significance. Also unlikely to overhear any conversations about it.

Hi LOH is Alison King's nickname for Sydney Martin who plays Betsy, Lisa Swain's daughter. Sydney has an Opera House (which actually on inspection turned out to be smaller than I had imagined from the photos) so Alison has given her the nickname LOH. It is a bit tortuous.

It seems to me that they are re-writing Emily's relationship with Joel or I've forgotten something. Didn't she sing Joel's praises and urge Dee Dee to forgive him at one point? Or maybe that was explained? And where is Lauren going to live now that the flat's been cleared out and a baby has to be at least two weeks old to fly? Guessing tickets have not actually been bought as Joel has other plans for Lauren.

Joel blackmailed Emily to tell Deedee he's a good bloke. Threatened to hold up the divorce. She did explain that to Deedee in this episode.
