This week on Corrie one of the episodes opened with the announcer telling us that it “may contain scenes which viewers might find upsetting” and it ended with “if you’ve been affected by any of these issues…”  

Whatever happened to sitting back, relaxing, enjoying and soaking up a soap? Sigh. 

Another week with too many hospital scenes. Carla, Aidan and Nicola were all in hospital this week. Carla received Aidan’s kidney and in return she told Johnny she’s going to give him her shares of the factory.  Nicola was also wired up to a machine this week in the Weatherfield Ward after complications with her appendix and bowel. Enough, please Corrie. Too many “dramatic” hospital scenes lose any impact they’re supposed to have and fans are losing the will to care.

However, it’s not all been as dismal. There were some lovely scenes in the hospital when Roy went to kiss Carla goodbye as she was wheeled into the operating theatre and instead of planting a kiss on her cheek, Carla turned her head so that Roy had to kiss her full on the lips. And while Carla was under the knife in surgery, Roy and Johnny bonded over their shared love of her too. A nice touch, I thought. 

And at Nicola’s bedside, Phelan sat with tears in his eyes and told Nicola he didn’t want anything to do with her any more after he found out that she’s been harbouring Seb in her flat. He’s a complicated chap, Pat, as all of the best soap villains are.

Elsewhere this week, Billy’s junkie brother Lee turns up with methadone for Billy’s pain. Billy sweats his way through the week, lying to his friends and being a rubbish dad to Summer who is failing at school because of the carer role she’s forced into at home.   When Sarah sees Lee she’s terrified as he was the one who kidnapped her last time he was on the Street. David takes it upon himself to protect his sister and with the help of his new (and only) mate Josh, the two lads bundle Lee into the back of a van and give him a kicking. It’s a nasty storyline this one and it’s going to get darker too.

Meanwhile, with all the focus on the Connor clan this week and their kidney swap storyline, poor Jenny has been feeling left out after Johnny puts his kids first and her second. Jenny walks out of the flat feeling rejected and over a shared couple of cans of beer with Kev Webster, he helps her get a bit of perspective on what’s going on. This was a lovely scene between two old friends, more please.

Steve’s called on to act as referee between his mum and Eileen after they go head to head in a slanging match about Pat Phelan. Liz only wants to warn Eileen against the man she’s married to but Eileen won’t hear a bad word said against him and the two women fight in the pub.

My favourite story this week has been that of Gemma and Newt. Newt, you’ll remember is the nickname of Henry Newton, heir to the Newton and Ridley beer empire. He’s Cecil Newton’s grandson but to Gemma he’s her Prince Charming. So taken is she by him that she locks herself in the loo at the Rovers when he turns up with a bouquet of flowers for her. Gemma’s not used to such niceties from fellas, and Rita has to go and have a word with her to get her out of the loo.

THIS WEEK'S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 1. Baby George keeps falling ill, and it seems as if it happens each time he’s with Mary. In a soap twist I’ve been shaking my head at this week, Mary’s son Jude and his wife Angie report Mary for child abuse to the social services. Mary’s in pieces, she wouldn’t hurt a fly never mind her beloved grandson. But Jude and Mary are certain she’s hurting their baby and decide to head back to South Africa. Again. Oh, just go and never come back. 

Todd figures out that the car crash Billy was involved in many years ago was the same car crash that killed Susan Barlow – Peter’s twin and Adam’s mum. Billy’s beside himself with grief.

THIS WEEK’S HOSPITAL SCENE NO. 2 – Robert after having his testicle removed in the cancer scare.

Faye moves in with Eileen and Phelan and away from Anna and Gary. She chooses to believe that Phelan’s a good guy and so it’s left to Gary to tell Faye that Phelan raped Anna. Still it’s not enough for Phelan’s grip on Faye and Seb to loosen. Gary’s at a loose end and heads back to Ukraine to do another job. Sarah gives him a St. Christopher medallion before he leaves.

Over at Underworld, Matthew Singh gives the place the once-over but is shocked to find there’s a squatter living in there. Less shocked is Aidan Connor. Is Aidan deliberately trying to put Matthew off from buying the place?

Johnny and Jenny’s plans to move to Spain continue and Kate says she fancies moving with them. Rana’s not happy to hear this and then the next thing you know, she and Kate are stripping each other’s clothes off in the back of the Speed Dahl van while Luke finds them together. This story might be titillation for the lads and post-feminism soap for ladettes, but for this long-term soap fan it’s just really dull.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Doppelganger, Bailiffs and a Cinderella shoe

There were some good comedy moments this week, the first being Norris and Colin dressing alike in the Kabin. I liked this a lot until I remembered it’d been done before when Horace worked with Norris and they wore the same clothes, said the same words, drank their tea the same way. And in the same way, Colin and Norris turned up in matching tank tops and ties. Colin reckoned Norris might be his dad and so with a palaver over Norris’ blood test at the medical centre, his DNA is taken but it turns out Norris hasn’t fathered a son. However, there is some good news in all of this. The stolen blood test gets Moira sacked and she swans off to Stoke with Colin, the two of them gone forever, I do hope.

The second comedy moment was wonderful, classic Corrie, the likes of which we’re seeing far too little right now. Sally is in full mayoral mode giving her inaugural speech at a soiree in her sitting room just as the bailiffs arrive to take payment for Gina’s debt. Sally chucks Gina out and she moves in with Dev, sets herself up on the sewing machine and pimps up charity shop clothes for the market. Dev finds out about Gina’s bipolar condition when he reads the headlines in the Weatherfield Gazette. And after threatening to chuck her out too, he then allows Gina to stay. Not only that, but he pays off her debt to Sally tpp, although she doesn’t yet know. What a guy.

Kate’s distracted while driving the bistro car (bistro car?) down the cobbles as her phone rings on the seat beside her. She turns to look at it, sees it’s from Rana and then she smashes into Robert in the middle of the road. He’d ran onto the road to save Joseph from being crushed under Kate’s wheels.  Robert’s in hospital and gets stitches in his back so we’re treated to Yet Another Hospital Scene. What joy.  However, while in hospital Michelle urges him to get the lump in his testicle checked out and lo and behold, the urologist is called, Robert gets checked and diagnosed within minutes. Minutes. The testicle needs to be removed but Robert deals with the news in the only way he knows how. He takes to the casino and gambles, losing ten thousand pounds from the Bistro account.

One other good thing I enjoyed this week was Tracy acting as advisor of evil to Chesney, telling him how to get revenge on Daniel for flirting with Sinead. To see Chesney turning to the dark side is fun, because you know it can’t last, and to see Tracy acting evil by proxy is fun too. More of this sort of thing, please.

Gemma goes to a party that she’s found details of online and she rocks up in her best party outfit. She flirts with a guy called Newt in the really posh house where the party is held. But when she hears police sirens outside she flees, leaving her shoe behind. Newt holds the shoe, will he find Gemma? Well, next week we’ll see him on the hunt for her – and Newt is not just any old guy. He’s Henry Newton of the brewery family. Ooh, this could be fun.

Speaking of Gemma, she and Rita move back into Rita’s flat this week after the dreadful Colin moves out. Rita and Norris take over the Kabin again and back where they rightfully belong.

Elsewhere this week, Phelan pays back his Calcutta flats scam victims almost all of the money they’re owed. But where’s the money come from? Todd’s asking questions when he spots Vinny’s bag as the bag that held the cash. Is Todd onto Phelan now?  Anna tries to negotiate with Phelan and demands to know why he’s framing her. He won’t answer her question and denies that he did this. Anna’s trying to record his words on her phone, but sadly doesn’t get the confession she need. After Phelan poisons Seb further against Anna, she gets taken away by the cops for the attack on Seb.

In the Rovers there was a lovely scene when Angie and Mary finally put aside their differences after Mary finds out from Sally that Angie’s suffering post-natal depression. But the way in which Sally found this out was frustrating and wrong. She overheard Angie’s husband tell receptionist Sean at the medical centre, when Sean asked to know why Jude wanted to make an appointment. That’s never asked, is it? Certainly not at any GP surgery I’ve ever been to. And certainly not in front of a waiting room of people.

And finally, this week in the Streetcars office, Peter logs onto a dating website to show Steve a 3D image of his perfect partner. It’s an image of Tracy, and Steve, as you can imagine, is not best pleased.

Summer collapses in the ginnel this week after Simon gives her a cigarette to smoke that he’s found. It’s a fag that’s spiked with the drug Spice and Summer’s taken to hospital after she’s found unconscious. When Billy finds out that Simon gave Summer the cigarette, the vicar takes out his anger by punching Peter – hard. It could all lead to Billy and Todd being unable to adopt Summer as their own once the social worker’s called in. Peter tells the social worker it was a heated exchange that he doesn’t want to take any further and he won’t be pressing charges. But Billy can’t live with the thought of what he’s done and confesses all to the cops.

Sinead enjoys a drink in the Bistro with Daniel when Chesney collapses in the kebab shop. Off we go again to Weatherfield General for yet another hospital scene. As Ches is recovering in his hospital bed, shock news comes in from Izzy’s dad to say Katy has died in Portugal. News reaches Chesney who jumps out of bed and onto a plane, but not before Sinead proposes to him. He accepts, they’re engaged, but Daniel throws up and self-harms when he hears the news.

Liz cooks up a plan with Tom Ridley of the brewery to prove to Toyah and Peter that they need her behind the bar. I like this story, a lot, and it works, it gets Toyah to believe that they’d be lost without Liz in their lives (who wouldn’t be?).  And when news comes in that Toyah’s surrogate is pregnant, they ponder the pregnancy news and realise they’re going to need Liz all the more when the baby arrives. Job done. Liz 1, Toyah and Peter 0.

Mary goes a bit mad this week and it wasn’t pretty to see. She’s jealous of son Jude’s wife Angie and turns into Angie’s mother-in-law from hell. Is this the Mary we know and love? Well yes, sadly it is, that nasty streak in her comes to the fore yet again.  Angie tells Jude she’s got a job offer back in South Africa (she hasn’t) and she wants to leave Weatherfield immediately (she does). But it’s Mary she wants to get away from as Mary’s being unbelievably intrusive and overbearing with her son and grandson – Angie’s husband and child.  As the Appleton’s pack to return to South Africa, Mary takes baby George to the flower shop and deliberately returns late in the hope that Jude and Angie will miss their flight. But then baby George takes poorly and there’s another – yes, another – hospital scene. At the hospital, all is well as George just has a viral infection but in a private chat with the nurse, Angie reveals she is suffering post-natal depression. The nurse gives Angie some leaflets to take home with her including one on controlling intake of alcohol. Of course, it’s this leaflet Mary finds later back at the house. Now, Mary thinks her daughter-in-law is an alcoholic as well as an unfit mother and a no-good trollop who has her claws into her son. 

Gina gets her mits on Dev this week as she beds the Devster upstairs in Sally’s house. They do the walk of shame down the stairs only to land slap-bang in the middle of one of Sally’s soirees she’s thrown to talk about her campaign to become mayor. Gina swaps sides and decides to put her weight behind Sally’s campaign rather than Kirk’s, in some lovely comic scenes.  But behind the smile, there’s a debt collector after Gina this week.

And finally this week, we’ve a Phelan that the Corrie villain is on a cruising to a bruising after he gets beaten up by Vinny’s henchman. Phelan also sacks Seb after Anna encourages Seb to ask Phelan for a pay rise, but then Anna gets Seb a job cleaning windows with Tim.  Faye’s wondering what’s going on between her mum and her boyfriend after she catches them whispering together in the kitchen. Oh, she’ll find out soon enough.

Corrie weekly update - Andy’s Alive - and the Jammie Dodger Code

Jumping right in with the big storyline this week – Andy Carver’s alive! You remember Andy Carver, right? He was the fella who passed himself off as Michael Rodwell’s fake son before Phelan bashed him over the head with a laptop and we all thought he was dead.  But no! Andy’s still very much alive – bruised and battered and sporting a very tidy beard for someone who Phelan’s had locked up in a cellar for months.

Elsewhere this week, Rita has Gemma arrested after the Kabin gets broken into and money goes missing from Rita’s purse. None of this is Gemma’s fault – it was her horrible mates from the estate who nicked the sweets from the Kabin after letting themselves into the shop. And Gemma didn’t nick Rita’s money either, she loaned it to Gina who is deep in debt. Poor Rita though, she can’t remember any of this until much later. Fortunately for Gemma, Rita gets her freed from the nick but back at the flat the two of them have a ding-dong and Gemma’s so upset that Rita mistrusted her that she storms off to her room to pack her bags and leave.

Chesney continues with his panic attacks after the Bistro stabbing and has trouble leaving the house to go outdoors.  So when Fiz leaves Hope and Ruby with him to look after, unaware of how much Chesney is suffering from anxiety attacks, it can only end badly, I’m sure.

Jenny Bradley isn’t best pleased this week when Eva announces she wants a double wedding for her and Aidan with Jenny and Johnny.  There was a lovely scene in the factory when Kirk wondered why Jenny was so upset, pointing out that Eva’s beautiful and Jenny less so. “Eva’s Man United and you’re Weatherfield County.” Jenny’s face, as you can imagine, was a picture.  She does, however, ask Gemma to be her bridesmaid but after the Rita fandangle above, I’m not sure if that offer still stands. Jenny is hugely protective of Rita and has nothing good to say about Gemma’s thieving ways, even if she has been proved innocent.

As Norris and Mary prepare for their sham wedding next week in order to win the Mr and Mrs competition, Mary’s son Jude says he’s coming over for the bash, all the way from South Africa. Mary hasn’t the heart to tell her son that the wedding’s for show, not love.

In other news, Alya and Luke become the latest couple without chemistry to get it together and Kate’s not happy about her flatmates’ relationship. Frankly, neither am I.

And finally this week, Gary’s on his way to Ukraine to start his high-danger job protecting VIPs and what-nots. He leaves a bunch of letters with Alya (Alya?) in case of his death and asks her to pass them on to Sarah and the family.  But Alya drops the letters in Roy’s Rolls and Shona finds the one addressed to Sarah and hands it on for her to read.  Sarah rushes to Streetcars, demands that Gary’s taxi to the airport be delayed so that she can talk to Gary and find out what’s going on. And in a wonderful scene, using the CCC (Cabbie’s Code of Confidentiality) and the code words “This is Steve to Tim. We’ve run out of Jammie Dodgers”, Tim pulls the cab off the road feigning engine trouble.  Sarah catches up with Gary who tells her the truth about the danger of the job – but whether he’ll fly off or not remains to be seen.

Just a little word here to say that as it’s my birthday next week I may not be here with an update as I’m going to my favourite place on the Yorkshire seaside and then inland to the countryside for a few days.
