Well that proves it beyond all probability. There is a writer's competition for the nearest the knuckle line each week - I wonder what the prize is? No doubt the saga of Gail's (and later Top Hat) fanny will keep them rolling in the aisles for weeks and that was just after Gail had referred to "willy-nilly" packing of the box!
The story that Debbie told Abi was so realistic I reckon that the former should become an actress; oh whoops she is! The good lady wife reckons that Debbie planned the entire development to ruin Ray Crosby following their earlier encounter and I pooh-poohed the idea when she aired her thoughts but re-watching this incredible piece of story-telling I think she is right - she has engineered Ray into losing everything and that was her plan from the very beginning.
We all know that "Opposites Attract". Clearly Aggie delivering steam and heat and annoyance at her pregnant daughter out of law (above) and Grace are not opposites. So I think we can see what Michael sees in the latter - a mini-mother figure. Neither are going to back down and indeed Grace starts the wind up once Michael is out of earshot saying how much she hates ironing! Number 3 is going to be troubled house until one of them leaves - probably Grace deciding to do another runner like all the runners she has done in the past.
We know you better than that Mr Cropper, you simply want to eavesdrop so that you can later point out to Carla that Peter's behaviour reminds him of his Hayley and a conversation they had when she was putting her world in order. Which then leads to Carla running around growing ever more demented looking for Peter who can apparently go missing in the blink of an eye. Actually if the above line had been delivered by Mary I know it would have been to enable eavesdropping but I always thought Roy would rise above such deception.
Talking of Mary, she was giving it full welly when she advised Gail not to get involved with Gorgeous George who was currently draining his spuds! A little later Gail also provided a little background on harridan Eileen - unhinged and bitter to the core - grim by name, grim by nature. They also exchange thoughts about each other partners:
Gail: Brian Tilsley (dead), Richard Hillman (dead); Joe McIntyre (dead); Michael Rodwell (dead).
Eileen: Dennis Stringer (dead); Tony Stewart (dead); Michael Rodwell (dead); Pat Phelan (dead).
No I am not sure that is a complete listing in either case - but men would be advised to avoid both!
Leaving that aside these scenes are what Corrie has been missing - more please!!
Peter has been found in what looks like (to me) the same hotel bar where Abi was filming the showdown between Ray and the planning committee chair last week. Ken has told Peter there should be a family meeting - to which Peter simply observes that the absence of Dreary and Blanche will inevitably be a great loss!
Julie Jones wrote this episode and I suspect has a real feeling for the Barlow family dynamic giving this line to Peter almost immediately after the previous one. And after some more barbed exchanges between them Ken pours Peter's whisky into the slops tray - which earns him a swift right hook from Peter flooring Ken and providing a bloody nose!
The rollicking fun continued on Friday with Debbie Oates. Kev has also sussed that Debbie is up to something and if she is handing back houses at cost and Streetcars etc then she has a plan which looks after Number One - and that is not where Ken Barlow resides!
If I were as ill as Peter I am not sure I could string a couple of words together so this observation by him of Roy's alleged emotional intelligence was better than I would manage. Roy, I am sure, sees Carla as his daughter and even if he cannot tell her off for going out in the rain with wet hair he will still want to try and ensure she has smooth path in life - all credit to him.
Finally Nina also deigned to entertain tonight. She asked Roy if Asha could have some shifts in the cafe. Roy responds "I ..." and Nina immediately interrupts and thanks him for approving the suggestion as "Aye" is the word used by those politicians "when they vote in some stupid laws to make themselves richer" (above).
