Peter Barlow would like it to be known that he does not still have feelings for Carla Connor. Does not. Got it? Right. And just in case anyone was under the impression that he might still care for her, he denies it left, right and centre. It’s a wonderful subtle joke that threads its way throughout the week after Peter finds out that Carla and Daniel have slept together. He’s jealous but he keeps his feelings to himself, well, that’s what he’s telling himself anyway. We all know different, of course. And when Carla collapses with her kidney problem Peter goes to visit her in hospital. He’s on one side of the bed and Daniel’s on the other. A wonderful scene. 

But Carla in hospital was one of three hospital scenes this week – the others were Aidan Connor and Nicola Thorp. Hospital scenes are supposed to be dramatic, have impact, we’re supposed to care about what’s happening to the character. But when hospital scenes are chucked at us left, right and centre, we stop caring – about the scene, the character… and even, perhaps, ultimately, the show itself?  Please, Kate Oates, give the hospital scenes a rest.   We get it that you like them. Please get it that we don’t want them in every episode, not even every week.

Elsewhere this week, Rana’s parents find out about her affair with Kate. They offer Zeedan a large amount of money to stay with Rana as a married couple, money that Zeedan can invest into his business. It’s a deal that Zeedan takes but Rana spends the week in tears, she can’t half cry that girl.  When Yasmeen finds out what’s happened she tells Rana to pull herself together. “If you’re gay, you’re gay!” Yasmeen is great, she really is. Sadly for Rana she cries in reply: “But I don’t know what I am!”

Over in the Bistro, Chesney overhears Gemma’s fella Henry talking to his posh mate Hugo about Gemma. It becomes clear that Henry’s dating Gemma for a bet and Chesney’s not having it. He tells Gemma what he’s heard and she storms out of the Bistro after tipping food on Henry’s head. But Henry really has developed feelings for Gemma and isn’t going to let her go so easily even though she knows the truth about why he started dating her. And so Henry calls in at the kebab shop to see Gemma but Chesney forbids him and chucks Henry out. Later, Gemma’s quite taken when she hears from Cathy how Chesney defended her honour.

Tim packs to leave Weatherfield, telling Sally that he needs to get Faye away from the evil Phelan. But he spends so much time telling Sally that he’s leaving, that he doesn’t actually leave. He tells her in the pub that he’s leaving. He tells her in the kitchen at home that he’s leaving. But as far as we know, he’s still there.  Meanwhile, Sally cries on Kev’s shoulder as she wonders if it’s the end of the road for her and Tim. 

Speaking of Phelan, he knows there’s something odd going on inside Nicola’s flat when she won’t let him inside and he sees the curtains twitch. It’s Seb, of course, doing a terrible job of lying low and keeping away from the windows. So, when Faye finds out that Seb’s at Nicola’s flat, she goes there in a Streetcars cab. Unfortunately, Phelan overhears Steve take the call and follows Faye to Nicola’s flat. He barges inside with Faye, determined to find out what’s going on.  In a bid to get her dad out of the flat, Nicola feigns pregnancy problems and Phelan rushes his daughter to the hospital for an ultrasound.  Nicola then tells Phelan she’ll move in with him and Eileen until the baby’s born, thinking that it’ll be safer for Seb if Phelan has no cause to visit her flat again. But Phelan knows there’s something up and gets that look on his face again.

Elsewhere this week, Gina forgets to take her medication and goes off the rails, stealing fish fingers for which she gets locked up overnight. Dev tells her he’ll care for her (I’m not really buying their relationship) but she must remember to take her tablets as he can’t have her going off the rails while he’s got Aadi and Asha to look after too.

Speaking of pills, Billy’s in a great deal of pain after Adam swaps his heavy-duty painkillers for ordinary paracetamol. Adam wants Billy to suffer, of course, for what he did to his mam Susan in the past. Billy’s behaviour is affecting Summer now, and she’s become his carer.  Where’s that nosy social worker when she’s needed, the one who was always popping in and out?  Where’s the vicar’s convalescent home he can go to? 

And finally, this week it’s Eva’s 30th birthday and it’s also Amy’s 14th birthday on the same day. Eva pretends to get drunk at her party in the Rovers so that Leanne doesn’t twig that Eva isn’t drinking because she’s really pregnant and is going to give her baby to Toyah. A truly daft storyline in every single sense.

Corrie weekly update - Doppelganger, Bailiffs and a Cinderella shoe

There were some good comedy moments this week, the first being Norris and Colin dressing alike in the Kabin. I liked this a lot until I remembered it’d been done before when Horace worked with Norris and they wore the same clothes, said the same words, drank their tea the same way. And in the same way, Colin and Norris turned up in matching tank tops and ties. Colin reckoned Norris might be his dad and so with a palaver over Norris’ blood test at the medical centre, his DNA is taken but it turns out Norris hasn’t fathered a son. However, there is some good news in all of this. The stolen blood test gets Moira sacked and she swans off to Stoke with Colin, the two of them gone forever, I do hope.

The second comedy moment was wonderful, classic Corrie, the likes of which we’re seeing far too little right now. Sally is in full mayoral mode giving her inaugural speech at a soiree in her sitting room just as the bailiffs arrive to take payment for Gina’s debt. Sally chucks Gina out and she moves in with Dev, sets herself up on the sewing machine and pimps up charity shop clothes for the market. Dev finds out about Gina’s bipolar condition when he reads the headlines in the Weatherfield Gazette. And after threatening to chuck her out too, he then allows Gina to stay. Not only that, but he pays off her debt to Sally tpp, although she doesn’t yet know. What a guy.

Kate’s distracted while driving the bistro car (bistro car?) down the cobbles as her phone rings on the seat beside her. She turns to look at it, sees it’s from Rana and then she smashes into Robert in the middle of the road. He’d ran onto the road to save Joseph from being crushed under Kate’s wheels.  Robert’s in hospital and gets stitches in his back so we’re treated to Yet Another Hospital Scene. What joy.  However, while in hospital Michelle urges him to get the lump in his testicle checked out and lo and behold, the urologist is called, Robert gets checked and diagnosed within minutes. Minutes. The testicle needs to be removed but Robert deals with the news in the only way he knows how. He takes to the casino and gambles, losing ten thousand pounds from the Bistro account.

One other good thing I enjoyed this week was Tracy acting as advisor of evil to Chesney, telling him how to get revenge on Daniel for flirting with Sinead. To see Chesney turning to the dark side is fun, because you know it can’t last, and to see Tracy acting evil by proxy is fun too. More of this sort of thing, please.

Gemma goes to a party that she’s found details of online and she rocks up in her best party outfit. She flirts with a guy called Newt in the really posh house where the party is held. But when she hears police sirens outside she flees, leaving her shoe behind. Newt holds the shoe, will he find Gemma? Well, next week we’ll see him on the hunt for her – and Newt is not just any old guy. He’s Henry Newton of the brewery family. Ooh, this could be fun.

Speaking of Gemma, she and Rita move back into Rita’s flat this week after the dreadful Colin moves out. Rita and Norris take over the Kabin again and back where they rightfully belong.

Elsewhere this week, Phelan pays back his Calcutta flats scam victims almost all of the money they’re owed. But where’s the money come from? Todd’s asking questions when he spots Vinny’s bag as the bag that held the cash. Is Todd onto Phelan now?  Anna tries to negotiate with Phelan and demands to know why he’s framing her. He won’t answer her question and denies that he did this. Anna’s trying to record his words on her phone, but sadly doesn’t get the confession she need. After Phelan poisons Seb further against Anna, she gets taken away by the cops for the attack on Seb.

In the Rovers there was a lovely scene when Angie and Mary finally put aside their differences after Mary finds out from Sally that Angie’s suffering post-natal depression. But the way in which Sally found this out was frustrating and wrong. She overheard Angie’s husband tell receptionist Sean at the medical centre, when Sean asked to know why Jude wanted to make an appointment. That’s never asked, is it? Certainly not at any GP surgery I’ve ever been to. And certainly not in front of a waiting room of people.

And finally, this week in the Streetcars office, Peter logs onto a dating website to show Steve a 3D image of his perfect partner. It’s an image of Tracy, and Steve, as you can imagine, is not best pleased.

Corrie Weekly Update - A Golden Week Of Opportunity

With Adam arrested for Ken’s attempted murder, Ken thinks he’s safe with Daniel in his flat. Daniel’s decorating, and there’s a sharp knife too close to hand, as secrets unfurl between father and son. Unable to take any more of Ken’s condescension, Daniel reveals all about pushing Ken down the stairs. And as the news sinks in, furious, hurt, Ken demands to know why Daniel didn’t just finish him off. Daniel’s eyes flick to the knife. Was he actually thinking of stabbing Ken with it and killing him? We’ll never know because just at that moment there was a knock at the door and in walks Daniel’s mum, Denise Osbourne, last seen in Weatherfield many moons ago. Reunited with the parents who deserted him, Daniel can’t cope and locks himself in the bathroom, causing himself pain. It’s horrid to watch, and we all feel his pain.

“You should kick the door down!” Denise yells at Ken.
“I’m 77!” he replied.

Meanwhile, back on the Street, Sinead’s in Daniel’s flat where she drops coffee on the floor. Mopping up, she notices the carpet lifting at the edge, she peels it back and sees a loose floorboard. Lifting that she finds the blood-stained poetry book, that Daniel hit Ken with on the stairs. Chesney takes it upon himself to look after Sinead and she moves back in to Beth and Kirk’s house after ringing the cops. The Weatherfield police storm round to Daniel’s flat where he’s arrested for Ken’s attempted murder. But Ken can’t prosecute his own son and tells the cops he simply fell. They know it’s not true, but have to let Daniel go home. “Where’s home?” a broken Daniel asks as Ken leads him out of the cop shop.

The second big story was Nick Tilsley leaving Weatherfield, this time for good as the actor left the show. A family day on the beach is arranged for Nick and Leanne, Toyah and Peter, Steve, Simon and baby Olly. Happy families it ain’t but at least they all try. That is, until Leanne finds out that Nick knew Peter was innocent of Ken’s attack but kept quiet about it because he hates Peter so much.  Leanne tells Nick she wants nowt to do with him. Nick ponders on this and goes for a walk where he gets stuck in quicksand. On paper this sounded silly, but on screen it really worked. Nick’s phone won’t work and he gets pulled slowly down until only his ears and eyes are visible above the water. He’s rescued of course, a quicksand death would be too grisly to show for Coronation Street, but he does leave the Street after he’s back on dry land. He hugs mum Gail, takes his passport from the drawer and drives himself away. I can’t say I’ll miss him, can you?

And the third massive story this week has been the grooming of Bethany, which reached its darkest point. It was horrible, stomach-turning stuff but it marked a change in the storyline from which Bethany can recover, although it’s going to take some time.  Nathan pimps her out to three men at the same time. They all pay Nathan and we see the men follow Bethany into the bedroom at one of Nathan’s parties. There’s an even younger girl at the party too, just in case you thought Nathan wasn’t evil enough. Nathan drugs Bethany by spiking her drinks and stubs a cigarette out on her arm too. Nasty stuff indeed.

But there’s some hope of the story coming to an end. Shona found out from Craig that Bethany’s boyfriend Nathan runs a tanning salon. She puts two and two together and knows it’s the same Nathan from her troubled past. She storms round to the salon and tells Nathan to leave Bethany alone.  Nathan gets her beaten up by his thugs and she’s in a bad way. It’s Craig who finds her, of course, and takes her to hospital from where she does a runner, intent on telling David the truth about his niece.  David, Gary and Sarah jump into the car and speed over to Nathan’s flat to rescue Bethany, but someone has called the cops who tip off Nathan there’s going to be a raid. Men scatter and run but the cops catch Nathan. He mouths ‘I Love You’ to Bethany as he’s taken away by the fuzz.

Sarah’s beside herself with worry after finding out what’s gone on and hugs her daughter tightly, relieved she’s all right. But Bethany’s confused, angry and hurt that Nathan’s been arrested. She cries undying love for her fella, brainwashed into believing that he’s done no wrong. It’s going to be a long time before this storyline is through and the scales fall from Bethany’s eyes.

And finally, elsewhere on the Street this week there were, thankfully, more lighthearted moments. Brian and Cathy finally got together after Cathy collared Brian for a kiss under a ladder.  Anna celebrated her 50th birthday with a party in the house and Chesney finally grew a pair as he protected Sinead from Daniel.

Corrie Weekly Update - Moroccan Kidney and a Cow Pat

Evil Nathan tells Bethany he’s throwing one of his parties and expects her to sleep with one of his mates, again. Nathan buys her a new outfit to butter her up and she plies on the make-up and gets drunk. Back home on the Street, Sarah is waiting for Bethany as the two of them were supposed to be going to a wedding fayre together and when Bethany doesn’t show, she storms round to Nathan’s flat. She finds her daughter drunk and unconscious on the sofa, rings Gary and the two of them drag Bethany back to the Platts.  When Bethany comes round, she’s furious with her mum and Gary because she knows that Nathan will be expecting her at the party. She rants and raves, throws things, chucks stuff. Glass breaks and both Gary and Bethany are bloodied and hurt. Bethany runs off into the night and we see her under a bridge by the canal, crying and hurt. 

Shona doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going. Should she stay or should she go? She tells Roy not to colour code her in on the staff rota for Tuesday a she’s not sure if she’s sticking around in Weatherfield. Gail wants her gone and gives her £400 to do a runner, but Roy has a quiet word and she decides to stay, as you knew she would. I didn’t like Shona when they first brought her in as it felt like she was being shoe-horned into the Becky McDonald role of waif and stray taken in by Roy. But she’s turned out to be a lot more complex and her interaction with David and Gail (and with evil Nathan, we’ll soon discover) is intriguing, to say the least. And yes, she gave Gail (almost) all of her money back.

Toyah wakes up after spending the night on Eva’s plump cushions and although she’s got a hangover, I can’t have been the only one who went “Aye-Aye!” when she dashed to the bathroom to throw up. Is she pregnant? Peter’s not best pleased with Toyah’s behavior, going behind his back to have the IVF implant without his knowledge. He moans to Leanne that he doesn’t even think Toyah believes that he didn’t attack Chloe. Leanne takes it upon herself to storm round to see Chloe and give her what-for, telling her to leave off Peter and stop telling lies that he attacked her. Just as Leanne’s in full flow, there’s a knock at the door and Toyah turns up. The Battersby sisters give Chloe a verbal battering. It’s enough for Chloe to go to the cops and get the charges dropped against Peter. Mess with the Battersby girls at your peril.

Leanne lies to the cops and tells them she saw Peter in his flat on the night that Ken was attacked. She and Peter are getting very friendly again, don’t you think?  But Nick knows Leanne is lying to save Peter’s skin. He reveals to David that on the night of Ken’s attack he saw Peter in his car on Clitheroe Drive, smoking a fag. So, Nick knows that Leanne is lying to save Peter and now everyone knows that Nick kept the truth from the cops so that Peter was in the frame for Ken’s attack. Still with me? So far, so good.

Nick also arranges, at short notice, to spite - ooh - everyone, a naming ceremony for baby Oliver. It’s like a christening without the church. A celebrant is arranged and everyone’s in their best bib and tucker but Nick doesn’t show, he’s at home getting drunk. Steve and Liz storm in, angry at not being invited and the whole thing goes into meltdown.

Elsewhere, Anna goes bananas when she sees Faye getting into Phelan’s van, where Faye’s waiting for a lift to see Seb at the young offender’s unit. Anna jumps into the van, incensed about Faye and Phelan being friendly, and zooms off in the van, giving Faye a right ear-bashing. She returns the van when she’s cooled down but has some explaining to do to Kevin. He’s booked a night away in a hotel for them both as he feels they’re growing distant as a couple, but Anna’s not interested and refuses intimacy with Kev.

Over in the flower shop, there was a wonderful moment between Mary and Tracy. Tracy’s checking her bank account and finds out that Ken’s deposited the money so that she can buy the shop from Peter, who still owns it. She squeals with delight which brings Mary rushing to her side, concerned. “What’s the matter? Is it your Moroccan kidney?” she panics. A wonderful line from writer Damon Alexis-Rochefort.

Mary has some explaining to do when Norris turns up wearing a neck brace after his break in the Lake District with Mary. He was injured in an incident involving a sausage roll and a slip on a cow pat, for which he pins the blame squarely at Mary’s door and insists she look after him until the neck brace is off.

Also this week, Audrey had some lovely scenes. Firstly, in the Bistro at the naming ceremony, Robert asked her: “More bubbly, Audrey?” and he offered her a top-up of her glass. “I couldn’t be more bubbly!” she replied.   And then there was a long scene in the salon between her and Billy the vicar as she trimmed his hair. Audrey shared her wisdom with Billy over whether he should be taking in Drew’s daughter Summer. She advised Billy that Todd might not want to be a father and not ready for parenthood. She reminded Billy that Todd lost a baby once: “He was a Billy too,” she said in a wonderful scene.

Rosie takes it upon herself to turn detective this week to help Adam prove that Daniel is the one who attacked Ken. Adam’s as confused as I was as to why Rosie would want to help pin the blame on Daniel, but it’s a nice pairing between these two. It shouldn’t work, but it does, as friends for now.

And over at Underworld, Sally’s sister Gina starts work and becomes one of the girls.  Kate’s worried about Johnny who has another fall and tells Kate his legs have been bothering him so he’s seeing a masseur. Kate also takes a call at the factory from a posh hotel confirming an overnight stay for Mr. Connor. She assumes her dad was taking Jenny away for the night, but the Mr. Connor in question wasn’t Johnny, it was Aidan, who had booked a night of nooky for him and Maria. But when Kate tells Aidan about the phone call, in front of Eva, he has no choice but to pretend he’d booked it for them both. Aidan and Eva set off for the hotel where Aidan spends the night on Eva’s plump cushions.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - who attacked King Ken?

The big question on everyone’s lips is Who Pushed Ken? Yes, King Ken of Chez Barlow was shoved down the stairs at No. 1 Coronation Street in an attack that the cops are calling attempted murder.  But who would want to kill of Ken – and why?  The suspects are lined up and called in for questioning.  The Barlow household becomes the focal point of the street but for all the wrong reasons. I’m loving this storyline and I have my suspicions as to who pushed Ken. I reckon it was young Seb, Faye’s troubled boyfriend. We already know that he’s a thief and tried to nick cash from Ken’s place before Phelan caught him. And we know that he’s capable of violence too, having beaten up Jackson.  Perhaps Seb was  stealing more cash from Ken’s when he was intercepted and Seb pushed him down the stairs? Just my opinion, of course.

The cops quiz and release Phelan after Todd provides them with a video alibi showing Phelan in Luke’s flat at the time of the attack. But still under suspicion and quizzed by the cops are Tracy, Daniel, Adam and Peter. Sinead’s looking shifty too, after she lied about having a miscarriage to Daniel and the truth is now out about her abortion.

Both Peter and Tracy argued with Ken this week, putting them both in the frame for the attack on Big Barlow. Tracy’s argument came after she heard Ken telling Sinead how unhappy his life with Deirdre had made him and how he didn’t want her holding back Daniel, as Deirdre had held him back once. 

And Peter, oh, Peter’s argument came when threatened Chloe to leave him alone and she turned up in the ginnel, crying. Ken found the distressed woman when he was out walking Eccles after he saw Peter push Chloe away. Ken takes Chloe back to No. 1 for a cuppa and she lies about how Peter’s back on the booze (he’s not) and how they’ve been having an affair for ages (they haven’t).  Ken, pompous as you like, takes it upon himself to break this news to Toyah and when Peter finds out he’s not best pleased, as you can imagine. In fact, so incensed is Peter that he takes a bottle of whisky from the Rovers and heads home to the flat. Tormented by his drink demons, Peter lifts the bottle to his lips but doesn’t touch a drop, he smashes the bottle to the floor instead.

Toyah reels from the news that Peter’s back on the booze and the birds when he’s neither, although yes, he’s been tempted by both.  She rings her ex-husband Toby for a shoulder to cry on and he tells her they’re done, he wants nothing more to do with her, and rightly so, too.

Elsewhere this week, Kev’s got money worries at the garage and Rosie thinks she knows how to solve them. She tells Sophie that she can get a glamour modelling job to pay off Kev’s debts but Sophie’s against her sister doing this and tells Kev the truth. “I don’t want you parading around in your bra and pants!” dad tells daughter. A nation breathed a sigh of relief that we won’t have to suffer another Pop My Cherry moment from Rosie Webster.

Meanwhile, there’s heart breaking news for Sally when she gets a call from the hospital to say that her breast cancer has returned.  It hasn’t… it’s a very cruel and a nasty hoax played by an online troll who targets Sally after she’s interviewed on Radio Weatherfield about the mastectomy bra line she’s promoting at Underworld.  It’s a horrible storyline for Sally to have to go through. Tim wants to tell the cops and tells Sally she should delete her social media accounts.

Cathy and Brian go on a date this week but Brian lies to Roy and tells his flatmate that he’s going to a talk on carbon emissions instead. Roy can’t understand why Brian won’t let him go with him to the talk, which Roy says he would’ve found fascinating. The morning after the theatre, it’s Cathy who tells Roy that she and Brian had been out on a date. When Roy finds out the truth he’s upset that Brian lied to him, but he’s happy for Brian and Cathy to date.

And finally this week, Fiz finds her magic masseur fingers and rubs chip oil into Tyrone’s back.

And that’s just about that for this week.
