Corrie weekly update: Don’t spit in the hotpot

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle
Available from http://www.corrie.net/updates/weekly/

The Connors go to war over baby Susie after mediation (or meditation as the continuity announcer had it) failed. Maybe meditation was the way to go, who knows? Anyway, Johnny does a runner with the baby, leaving Eva in a right state and making a tearful plea on national telly to get her baby back. Johnny hides in a hotel room with his granddaughter, he’s in a bad way as he’s not taking his MS medication. He calls Liz and she goes to him, he tells her he loves her and they share a kiss on the bed. But then Liz calls the police, unbeknown to Johnny, who’s busy declaring undying love for Mrs Mc and planning their getaway on the run. When the police arrive, Johnny scarpers, leaving Liz with the baby. He’s later found by the canal, unconscious and is rushed to hospital. When he wakes, it’s not Liz he declares his love to, it’s Jenny - and he gives Liz the cold shoulder for turning him into the cops.

Gemma’s upset this week when she reads in the Weatherfield Gazette that Henry Newton has got engaged. But when he turns up on the Street confessing undying love for Gemma, he tells her that the engagement is something his parents wanted, not him. He says he wants Gemma and no one else and even offers to buy the Rovers Return for her. So serious is he that he puts in an offer on the pub. Rita tells Gemma she’ll have to go on a food hygiene course. “Food hygiene? Don’t spit in the hotpot!” Gemma replies.

Eileen returns this week to find Abi living in her house but she’s less livid about that than she is about finding out Steve’s engaged to Tracy. She and Dev try to stage an intervention with Steve to stop him from marrying Tracy, but he’s too far gone, he tells them, and he can’t disappoint Amy, after all. But is it really Amy that he’s getting married for or does he really love Tracy after all?

Daniel and Sinead go after an unused building on Victoria Street so that Sinead can set up her vintage clothes shop. Brian and Cathy are after the same building to set up a hardware store, but it’s the younger couple who get the building after Cathy tells them they can have it. Too late though, for Brian has already handed in his notice at work!

At the hair salon, Audrey touts for business to get back at Maria. She delivers leaflets around the street offering half price haircuts for anyone who wants one.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie Comicals Mon 16 - Fri 20 2018

Once again looking at the lighter side of Coronation Street to remind ourselves that not everything is gloomy and dark.

Monday was dominated by revelations - Rana and Kate in bed which once revealed in the environs  of the Rovers enabled Jenny Connor to observe, as we see above:

"It is the 21st Century.  You are allowed to say the word "lesbian" in public".

The other revelation was of course the tonsil hockey games between Ali and Carla, which led to the abandonment of dinner chez Michelle and an explanation of Jenny's later slightly drunker behaviour (christened "Bradleyed" elsewhere on the internet) as she gets up to leave the dinner table she tells Johnny "I missed lunch for this".

Jenny seemed to get the pick of the lines on Monday so we will move on to later in the week!  For those who want to know it the password to the wifi in the cafe is IcedFinger1997.

Talking of Roy's Rolls there was discussion of a secret pudding for Monday over which Shona was accused of making a mountain out of a moment and was a bit surprised as we can see.

Within seconds Shona hit back with the acute observation that she did not realise anyone under the age of 30 actually knew what a landline was for when Ali phoned the cafe's phone; then she carried on to accuse Carla of "not" being a cradle snatcher.  The mystery pudding turned out to be the infamous Manchester Tart; which certainly wiped any hint of a smile off of Carla's face!

Continuing the tarts theme, out on the Street Moira (talking to Liz) [and courtesy of scriptwriter Debbie Oates] refers to the Kate and Rana living room activity as "shenanigans" observing that if she is capable of that sort of activity then she is fit enough for work!

However the funniest laugh in our house this week came from the following:

As you can see Max said to Shona that "She's (Gail) washing the pots for Roy".  However in our house what we thought Max said was "She's watching the pots dry"!  So rewind and turn on the subtitles.  We are sorry the writers did not use our interpretation.

I should be writing the Friday episode review - it will be along a little later.  I hope you are enjoying this little comic diversions!

Kosmo

Corrie weekly update - Wedding woes and ambient jazz

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

This was the week of Chesney and Sinead’s wedding but in true soap style, nothing went to plan and everything went to hell in a handcart. Chesney clocks the look that flies across the cobbles between Sinead and Daniel before the wedding. And he feels that Sinead isn’t the right person to be mum to Joseph. But he waits until the last moment when he has to say his vows and slip the ring on Sinead’s finger, before he blurts out: “I don’t.”  Sinead’s in tears but Daniel’s perked up by the news when he finds out from Carla what’s to do.

Gemma takes Henry to the wedding as her plus-one but he makes sarcastic comments all the way through. Gemma’s fed up with him and dumps him but he soon comes crawling back. In the Rovers later Gemma is at the bar and Henry’s phone buzzes with a call from his mate and from the conversation they have it’s clear that Henry is only dating Gemma for a bet. Oh dear.

Elsewhere this week, a vigil is held for Luke on the Street with some bizarre ambient jazz and a lot of candles. Most odd. Seb does a runner after figuring out that Phelan shot Luke. Meanwhile, Anna gets a prison visit from Eileen who’s started to put two and two together about her murdering husband too.
Kate leaves Weatherfield for Devon this week after she snogs Sophie on the Street and says she can’t deal with the aftermath of Luke’s death. Rana’s confused and upset to hear about Kate kissing Sophie and wonders why Kate has really gone away.

Sean moves in with Tyrone this week after he’s chucked out of Norris’ house by Angie and Jude for deleting all of their photos of baby George from their laptop.

Best scenes of the week for me were Toyah, Leanne and Eva in the Rovers all being fleeced for school dinner money from Simon. The three sisters in the pub is one of the highlights of Corrie for me, even if Toyah still has zero chemistry with Peter and no idea how to run a pub.

And finally this week, Bethany and Craig grow close and he thinks he’s onto a winner when he spies sexy lingerie in her shopping bag from town. But the lingerie is for Bethany’s new job as a lap dancer, only Craig doesn’t know that yet.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Happy New Year?

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

Greetings and welcome to another week of words from Weatherfield. Here’s wishing every single one of you a very Happy New Year! And so, without any further ado, here we go with this week’s Coronation Street update which is short because I didn’t enjoy this week’s Corrie at all. Too many plot holes, too many characters changing personality, too many hospital scenes.  Here’s to 2018 and all that it may bring us Corrie fans, whether we want it or not.

It’s David Platt’s birthday and Shona gives him an umbrella, ella, ella.

Carla Connor returns with her cheekbones blazing but her glass of red oddly empty. Is she pregnant? No! On a diet? No! Prepare yourself for months of hospital scenes. She’s got kidney disease and Roy could be the one to save her.

Alya suffers racist abuse from the Parker Brothers at Showcase, the very people that she and Aidan are trying to do business with. The very people who could save Underworld.  There’s no denying that the Parker Brothers are a nasty piece of work in anyone’s world.

Billy falls off a cliff top after Peter Barlow lets him loose from his car boot where he’s bundled him into in his grief at finding out Billy was in the car that killed Peter’s twin, Susan. Billy survives the fall and there’s lots of hospital scenes which just about fair put me off my sprouts.  Added to Billy’s woes is a visit from Ken Barlow pretending to be Don Corleone, wrapped up in a duffel coat, whispering loudly about family secrets. Billy’s got more to worry about however when Peter rings Geraldine, Summer’s horrid grandma who determines to take Summer back home with her. But Todd’s done a runner with Summer (a hasty exit for Todd after actor Bruno Langley was sacked).

Adam tries to commit suicide as he comes to terms with the fact that Billy was in the car that killed his mum, Susan. Daniel finds him and saves him.

Best storyline of the week for this Corrie fan has been Steve and Tracy getting back together, well, sort of. Amy’s not pleased about it, but I am, even if Steve makes eyes at his ex-wife Michelle in the Bistro while he’s supposed to be on a date with Tracy.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Corrie weekly update - Stargazing, stock cubes and shaving cream

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle

Available from
amazon.co.uk or amazon.com

It’s Ken’s birthday and he throws a dinner party, inviting Audrey, Brian, Cathy and Roy. It’s a pleasant enough evening apart from the fact that Brian smells like a stock cube. This is because Amy puts the stock cube in the shower head and Brian takes a shower at Ken’s as there’s something wrong with the shower at Roy’s.  Amy’s stock cube stunt is part of a joke that gets her, Asha and Summer into trouble this week as their jokes get out of hand. They also put blue paint into Roy’s windscreen wipers in the Woody. Summer’s called into the head’s office at school after she demonstrates her artistic prowess by drawing an, er, part of the male anatomy in shaving cream onto a teacher’s car. Summer hangs her head in shame and tells Billy and Todd she’ll never do it again. Far worse is Amy and Asha’s punishment when they’re forced to dance about in front of Cathy and Brian as Boney M tribute group Phoney M.  However, I don’t yet think that the girls’ games are over, not yet, as each of them dare the other one to do something even worse that will leave Summer unconscious next week.

Shona’s ex-fella Dane, father of killer Clayton, arrives and demands the winnings from Shona’s scratch card. When she refuses and David threatens him, Dane locks himself in David’s car with Lily and Max and tells the kids the truth about who killed their mam. There were lovely scenes between David and Max as Max tries to come to terms with the truth about Shona being the mum of the lad who killed his mum. Shona tells David that she loves him and the kids but the truth is that Clayton is her son and there’s nowt she can do about that. And so they split up for half an episode and then get back together again.

With the factory girls still out of work, Beth and Alya buy a sewing machine so that they can do some work at home. Trouble is, the sewing machine they buy is one of the ones that’s been nicked from Underworld by Adam Barlow. The cops are called, Adam and Todd are grilled (lightly but not enough to singe) and Billy’s angry at what he thinks Todd’s involved in. He’s so angry that he takes an envelope of cash he finds in Todd’s office and distributes the cash to the factory girls, anonymously, in envelopes through their front doors. The money belongs to Shona and when Billy finds out it’s hers, he can’t apologise enough but Shona’s happy that the money has gone to the girls as she’d planned to give it to Dane to get him out of her life.

Sean’s now working in the medical centre, taking up the role that Liz has walked out on. She’s working back in the pub, much against Toyah and Peter’s wishes but they’re too scared to ask her to leave. While Liz makes herself at home again behind the bar, Toyah gives Liz all the crappy jobs to do, hoping she’ll get fed up and leave. There’s toilets to be cleaned, barrels to be changed and Liz does it all with a very forced smile. But then Thomas Ridley (of Ridley and Newton) comes into the pub and he isn’t best pleased with the pint that Toyah serves him. Is Liz involved in this in any way, I wonder? A cheeky smile most definitely played around her lips while Thomas was in the pub giving Toyah hell.

Elsewhere this week, Rana tries to kiss Kate. And while I’ve never been a Rana fan, this week my heart broke for her. She’s got a crush on Kate the size of Salford itself and says that she isn’t gay, she just has feelings for her friend. Kate can’t cope with the news and doesn’t know what to do. Meanwhile, Zeedan tells Rana he wants to marry her and have babies. For the first time ever since she joined the show, I really do feel for Rana and she allowed us to see something going on behind her make-up mask.

Nicola has a big announcement to make when she tells Phelan and Eileen that she’s pregnant – and the father is Gary Windass. Crikey, that was quick, she only slept with him last week.

Phelan’s got more on his mind when he follows Daniel to the nursing home again. Daniel’s hoping to dig dirt on Phelan by speaking to Vinny Ashford, who’s mum is in the care home.  However, it’s Phelan who speaks to Vinny over the facetime, or whatever you call it. I’ve just about given up on all this Phelan malarkey and wish it was over.

In other news this week, Mary’s moved in with Norris. We only know this because it was mentioned in passing, we never saw her move in and we don’t know what their living arrangements are. Does Norris’ house have three bedrooms or is Mary sharing with Norris? Enquiring minds need to know. Anyway, she moves back to Dev’s house when he son Jude with wife Angie and baby George return from South Africa and move in with Noz.

And that’s just about that for this week.
