Platt Drama in 2025: Interview With Corrie Producer Kate Brooks

With new Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks' name now appearing in Corrie's credits, we've entered a new era for the soap.

I travelled to Coronation Street Studios in Manchester to hear all about Kate's vision for the show, and find out about her plans for characters and storylines going into 2025.

She had so much to share, I've divided her insights into six blogs. This one is dedicated to the Platts, and so, without further ado, here's what Kate had to say about what the future holds for this legendary Corrie family who have already been through so much this Christmas.

Those not wishing to read any spoilers should look away now.

The departure of Gail, played by Helen Worth, on Christmas Day leaves the family without the presence of their mother to support them through thick and thin.

How will they fare in her absence?

"It all goes to pot," says Kate. "David has stolen a big old bag of cash from Harvey, of all people, which was the wrong move, David! And he does it for the house, he does it for the family, but this escalates massively. And the story we're telling is one of a very desperate David trying to protect his family, and trying to keep his family, and keep the dogs at bay, keep Harvey and his goons at bay. He's struggling to navigate that, he's struggling to pay back this big debt he has, he's struggling to protect his family and it all comes to a massive head in early February when we play a massive stunt which has massive consequences for David."

"In trying to protect everyone, in trying do the right thing, he ends up losing quite a few things that he holds dear. So, a real journey for David. He absolutely tries his best, he's well intentioned, but he fails and he messes up and he makes mistakes and there's massive consequences, not only for his own family, but for the wider community as well. Somebody does get embroiled in David's downfall which is quite unexpected."

"So, lots of Platt drama. I love the Platts for many reasons. They are very funny, they are very brilliant, and they feel like a real family. And what I've been keen to do and to show is that, this is Corrie. David's a hairdresser. He's not used to being involved and embroiled with bad guys, with drug barons, with gangsters; that's not his world. But, what happens if you take a guy who's just very ordinary and put him in that precinct; put him in a world where people are acting and reacting without any thought for consequence. They don't care about David. They don't know David like we do. And it was really important to show how just a normal fella reacts to all of this."

"There's masses of stuff for the Platts going forward. As I say, they are such a fabulous family. I love David and Shona, they are so strong. They get everything thrown at them in 2025 and more. Can they survive it? I'm absolutely not gonna say. But, it's a lot. And they will struggle with the enormity of what's going on."

"But, I also love David, Sarah and Nick, and now that their Mum has left, they are left to kind of fend for themselves and we realise that they do need Gail sometimes to steer them in the right direction and she's kind of kept them on the straight and narrow. Obviously you've got Max thrown into that mix who is as reckless sometimes as David is, and it's just a recipe for disaster. So, loads of stuff for the Platts. They are going to be very busy indeed."

Concerning Audrey, Kate said, "She will absolutely be integral to the Platts. I love Audrey. The flighty mother just has my heart, so we will see as much of her as we can. She will be massively at the heart of the Platt story, she will be tutting and judging and doing the Audrey noise and trying to offer her own kind of sage wisdom. But you know what? They are such liabilites, aren't they, all of them. She is often left very dispairing of their actions."
