Toyah is in for a huge shock isn’t she? Nick arrives back from Tenerife, she walks into work excited to see him and Kit is there to arrest her. How on earth does she react to this?
It’s an enormous shock, she’s completely blindsided by it because she hasn’t done anything wrong. Nick’s been away with Sam, she’s really missed him but in the meantime Leanne has been really messing with them both, sending text messages which we may later find out not be true, so Toyah is desperate to see Nick and make sure they’re still on track, then she’s met by this. She walks into the bistro giddy to see him and then Kit is there arresting her on suspicion of fraud which is the last thing she thought was ever going to happen.
Does Toyah have any idea at this point as to where this could have come from?
She doesn’t at first but when Kit takes her to the police station and starts questioning her what comes out is that in order to set up this fake bank account the person who has done it must have known a lot of personal information about Toyah so then she starts to think hang on, only a really small amount of people know this stuff and Leanne is one of them. She then starts to wonder if Leanne knows that she and Nick are back together rather than them keeping it secret as they thought!
Does Nick doubt Toyah at all?
There are a couple of occasions where she really has to plead her case with Nick, she’s worried he’s suspicious of her and that she’s going to lose him.
Leanne was angry about Nick and Toyah’s affair the first time, so Toyah must have been expecting her to be angry a second time, but would Toyah ever have expected that Leanne would go out for this scale of revenge on her own sister?
No I wouldn’t have thought so because the repercussions of this could be that Toyah goes to prison. It’s huge, it’s not just slapping someone round the face or chopping their clothes up, it’s potentially incarcerating someone for something they didn’t do. Obviously it shows that Leanne is hurt but I think it also shows she’s quite unhinged, so it’s quite a nerve wracking time for both Toyah and Nick to see what lengths she will go to.
Do you think Toyah possibly didn’t realise how much this betrayal would hurt Leanne?
I think she had hoped deep down that Leanne was starting to move on with her life and if they gave it a bit more time she would start to get her head round the idea. But I think that was perhaps wishful thinking and is certainly not what is happening.
Given this, do you think a relationship between Nick and Toyah is ever going to work?
I don’t know, this is her sister’s ex, maybe in the future if Leanne moves on with somebody else and is able to be happy with a new partner then perhaps they could start to rebuild a sisterly relationship.
On the day of Gail and Jesse’s wedding (Christmas Day) Toyah is working in the bistro, can you tell us a bit about the row that breaks out between Toyah and Leanne?
Toyah and Nick have been further questioned about the fraud, they’re back at the bistro, then they quite boldly in front of everyone share a kiss. Of course that is the exact moment that Leanne walks through the door and far as she’s concerned they’re just rubbing her nose in it. A huge row escalates between the two sisters which culminates in a physical, old school Battersby brawl.
How was that to film, was it fun?
Yes it was a lot of fun to film but what I loved most was all the other characters in the scene and their reactions which were just absolutely brilliant. Craig, the bumbling police officer bursting in and making a hash of things, Colson is just so funny and such a joy to work with. Then Sue Devaney who plays Debbie is just hilarious, at one point there was a camera just purely on her watching all her reactions, we were all creasing up, she’s a comic genius. It was such a great atmosphere and energy having us all together in a big group.
Do you enjoy seeing the Battersby coming back out in the sisters every now and again?
Definitely, Toyah has become a lot softer over the years, she has a lot of empathy, she’s very sensitive, she wants to fix everything but we mustn’t forget their roots, their childhood and how they were brought up. So I enjoy those flashes of her having a bit of steel and a bit of grit. Because Jane is so brilliant at that I really have someone to bounce off. She’s never dropping the ball, she’s hitting you full pelt with all her energy and Leanne’s fury so you need to match her where she is. I really enjoy it as an acting exercise getting to do that.
Given her suspicions about Leanne, do you think Toyah and Nick will try and out her or do you think Toyah still doesn’t want to see her sister in trouble for this?
It’s interesting because Toyah and Nick have two quite different responses to this, Toyah feels great compassion for Leanne and because she does have quite a forgiving nature she wants to do anything to stop her sister from getting into more trouble and causing her more pain. Whereas Nick has had enough, this is the straw that broke the camel’s back for him. He’s quite determined to take Leanne down which I think is going to cause a bit of conflict between Nick and Leanne.
Toyah and Leanne have been through so much together, do you think there is a way back for Toyah and Leanne as sisters?
They have been through so much but this is next level and the way things are going it’s going to take a very long time but I really do hope they can come back together. Things are definitely not great in the Battersby camp but I think that ultimately there’s just too much history there to not have them back together.
How would you sum up Christmas for Toyah this year?
Christmas for Toyah this year is going to be unpredictable, fiery and incredibly dramatic!

Leanne's revenge is way over the top. It seems the new producer wants to make all the characters nasty.
