With new Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks' name now appearing in the credits, we've entered a new era for the soap.
I travelled to Coronation Street Studios in Manchester to hear all about Kate's vision for the show under her stewardship, and to find out about her plans for characters and storylines going into 2025.
Those not wishing to read any spoilers should look away now.
Kate had so much to share, that I've divided it up into six blogs, and you'll find links to all of them below.
This one is dedicated to an upcoming storyline which deals with the issue of knife crime. Here's what Kate had to say:
"Just when you thought it was safe to relax, we start the year with a big knife crime story. Really important issue to tackle, really important. The statistics are so alarming. I think knife crime has gone up by 80% in the past 10 years."
"We worked really closely with the Ben Kinsella Trust to ensure that we're telling the story right and to ensure that the message is, don't carry a knife out of fear because that escalates everything. We know we've got a real sensitive storyline that we are tackling, and it's going to be very hard-hitting."
"We have Mason at the centre of it, we have Dylan involved, it has massive ramifications for Abi and for Tim and Sally going forward, and we just felt like it's a subject that we couldn't ignore."
"I won't go into the details of what happens, but it has quite big consequences for people going forward and, as I say, it's not a subject matter that we've tackled lightly by any stretch of the imagination. But, it's an important one to talk about, it's an important one to let young people know that carrying a bladed article is not the way."
"It has a lot of impact on people and there's a lot of consequences to it and it's not just Mason and Dylan and Betsy that are at the heart of it, there are other characters involved; it's a real community story, it's a real shocking story."
"I love the shock storytelling tactics, I think they work and I think they keep people guessing, and it is definitely a shock, but I'm not going to say whether they die or not."
"It's a very interesting way we're telling
the story; it's not your usual linear storytelling, it's different,
it's bold, but I think it's really impactful, how we're telling the
story."
