Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 22nd February, 8 pm

Here we are for another Coronation Street Blog review in which I will try and avoid discriminatory language, violence, and scenes of panic or distress, which ITVX warned me of before I watched tonight's show. I normally take ITVX’s warnings with a pinch of salt but tonight’s certainly made a lot of sense. Some dark drama from Corrie this week, and as much as I enjoy reading Corrie fans tweet about their annoyance, and longing for days of old, I love this show a lot more when they delve just that bit deeper into Weatherfield’s darkest corners and modern society’s taboo subjects.

We shall start with stalking. Tonight, Justin’s weirdo voicemails and texts continue but Daisy’s waylaid with her influencer wedding arrangements whilst Daniel is teaching Max’s English lessons at the young offenders unit. Daisy’s suddenly not keen on social media, with all things considered, and reopening her phone, she decides to take the latest batch of messages to show the police. again. It makes no difference so Daniel offers to screen Daisy’s messages for her until she realises the police officer has ‘liked’ all of her Instagram pictures as well! two words; met police.

At the STC, (young offenders/grooming/grassroots racism strand) Daniel gives Max some Larkin to read which is an interesting choice, and kudos to Corrie for That literary reference. With Ken off-screen, it's nice to know we've got Daniel and Roy to keep the high brow on it. Daniel is forgiving of the young lad's predicament and tells Alya that she should pay him a visit.

She responds by making it very clear that she’s still struggling following the stabbing, but Ryan manages to change her mind. As with all Corrie prison visits, the visit itself is only a few scenes further on (unrealistic or for dramatic purposes?), and she read him the riot act, though not the victim statement itself (which I expected at this point) whilst Max could only listen. Later, he calls David to tell him all about his braying from Alya and it seems her words have helped. He wants his family to pay him a visit.

Fuelled by her opening up, Alya decides to take the statement and read it out at Blake’s sentencing. I expect we won't see that particular scene as we got to hear the statement tonight instead. I didn't take note of who wrote Alya’s words but that was an astonishing piece of drama and my scene of tonight, if not this week. I am going to disregard this carbon copy of the very recent Sam / Harvey prison face-off due to the top-drawer drama. This right-wing story really took up the majority of tonight's drama in fact.

Spider is still trying to track down the mystery right-wing benefactor and decides to pay Griff a visit in prison to see if he can press him for information. Another prison scene. That's all I’m saying. Spider admits that the police have found Griff’s burner phone which could lead them to Griff's paymaster. Meanwhile, Maria is perplexed at councillor Len’s sudden change of opinion, just as Spider reveals that the police have a warrant ready to make an arrest. Spider tells Toyah that once the case is over, he may return to normal policing. I hope this means the return of his blonde boss!! David did try to get things back to normal tonight with Shona, but although she made peace with Maria, her husband was still in the doghouse and he even got an earful in the pub!

Elsewhere, Billy and Paul announce their re-coupling, and I'm pleased Todd had a nice part to play, just annoyed that the Archdeacon appears to be avoiding church for another week! Also glad to see Evelyn back and bringing some comedic light into this week's darker drama.

What did you think of tonight’s Corrie? Let us know in the comments box.

Judgement Day for Nick and David! Coronation Street Blog meets Jack P Shepherd

Our second Coronation Street Blog interview of the recent press day is with a stalwart of Corrie's recent history. Grabbing a water from the Rovers Return bar (literally), I'm surreally sat on set (just under the dartboard) and although slightly distracted by the sights and sounds of this TV studio (it does look smaller in real life), we are ready to interview one the street's finest young actors. In true fashion, this was actually the first interview of the day but of course,  as we were embargoed and sworn to super secrecy, it's remained unpublished... until now!

Long-time bad boy, barber shop owner, brilliant Dad, and now fiance to Shona. Corrie stalwart David Platt has been part and parcel of Corrie's main family (sorry Barlow's) for decades. Once again, David has landed in trouble, but this time it's brother Nick who's the real villain.

Having gained a conscience by admitting to gran Audrey that he and brother Nick robbed her of £80k, David appears to have turned over a new leaf. Nick however, well it looks like his dark side is back with a vengeance. Tricked by Gail into meeting Gran, and then Audrey's accident with 'the lady' the brothers have both ended up inside for contempt of court.

We spoke to Jack about what happens next.

Jack said 'Nick gets laid into by some heavies and intervenes, but then they both end up taking a beating which causes a truce between the brothers' adding 'Nick then says he will admit the truth in court but actually doesn't' and his bad run of luck doesn't stop there.

Due to David's previous suspended sentence for beating up Gary, he ends up getting sent down anyway. Although Nick does eventually relent and tell the judge the truth (albeit being as slippery as ever) he manages to walk away with a suspended sentence.

Asked about his prison cell scenes, Jack admitted: 'We filmed in Chester, and I was filming in Myra Hindley's old cell which was quite scary.' He also revealed that Corrie does have a purpose-built prison on the Salford set.

With David back behind bars, it's likely that he's got a four month sentence to complete. Jack admits that the shotgun wedding with Shona is now off. Asked if he had any ideas about a possible future Corrie wedding with Shona, Jack had a few ideas, adding 'a massive one but they've got no money, so I imagine a registrar office or one in the bistro' but he's unsure as to what will happen to David in prison 'I actually don't know what is planned although some drama is promised'.

Just back from a holiday in the Bahamas and New York, a freshly tanned Jack is glad to be back in the Platt family and pleased that David is back to being a good character (almost).

Jack added 'Fatherhood has massively changed him. He's very responsible when it comes to them and Shona has had a huge influence'.

How does he think Nick and David will act, once David is back out of prison?.

'I suppose it all matters as to whether they can put things behind them, or whether they are going to continue the feud' adding 'I'd like it to continue so it's a more 'Cain and Abel' story'.

Outside of the street, Jack is actually great friends with 'Nick Tilsley' actor Ben Price, and alongside Colson Smith (Craig Tinker) the guys host a film review podcast Sofa Cinema Club which is worth a listen for any film buff, acting aficionado, or Corrie connoisseur.

With David now inside, what will the repercussions be on the outside?. His relationship with Shona, the barbers, and the kids?. It certainly seems like rough justice for this one-time bad boy.

You can read my interview with Samia Longchambon (Maria Connor) here.

Stay tuned to Corrie and to the Coronation Street blog for more press day interviews with me and Emma Hynes.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 10 July 7.30pm

New parents Daniel and Sinead have more to worry about than most, of late. Bertie, work, factory collapses and an incessant lack of sleep are causing them to worry. With Sinead's test results due, she seeks advice and favour from Tracy, whilst Daniel needs a chat with Adam.

Gail's unannounced eastern exodus is also causing some worry for Sarah who is reluctant to let her jailbird brothers know what's happening.

Michael and Steve's unicorn plan for Tiny is coming to fruition, yet Tim remains unaware. Can they keep Tim out of the way so they can use Tiny for a unicorn party gig? Roping in an unassuming Craig as a distraction plan, the lads head out to the children's party with the horse.

Meanwhile, Ed has a job at the bistro, and Robert makes excuses to Vicky about their next scan appointment. With Michelle's mystery wedding plans clashing with the scan, Robert tries to hire Ryan to cover a Bistro shift, meaning he has to cancel his DJ gig at Speed Daal.

Alya then heads over to the Bistro, can she persuade Ryan to change his mind?

In HMP Norcross, Leanne and Shona visit Nick and David. Bickering across visiting tables, guards soon separate the boys and Gail's disappearance suddenly seems less surprising. Collared by the dodgy druggy/painter guy, it seems Nick may be about to get a beating. Will David step into the breach to defend his brother?.

At the Rovers, Sean apologies to Paul, who in turn professes his innocence to Billy about the besmirch on his (once criminal) character. Can the boys kiss and make-up?

Daniel shares his woes in Adam who admits he should try to stay strong for the sake of Sinead. However, Adam tells him that he has to be honest about his true feelings. At the hospital, the couple has a sullen heart-to-heart and vow to stick together whatever the test results may be.

What happens next? Keep your eyes on this blog for my 8.30pm episode review that publishes later today!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 17th Jan 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to your first visit to this weeks Wednesday Corrie blog double!.

Tonight begins with Anna residing in the cells at HMP Norcross. Secretly talking to Gary on her smuggled phone, Anna is still trying to pull strings on Coronation Street and persuades Gary to track down Seb. However, with the warden discovering Anna's phone, and her trial imminent, will Anna be staying in the cells a bit longer?

With Gary on hot pursuit (ably assisted by an off-screen Nicola), it isn't long before he tracks down Abbie & Seb in a greasy spoon café . As Gary pleads for Anna and for answers, Seb reveals that he knows Phelan killed Luke. Gary goes straight to Weatherfield police and Seb goes on the run.

Back on Coronation Street, Toyah is suspicious of Carla's return and the effect it's having on Peter. Clearly hiding his attempted murder of Billy, Peter confides in Adam and he is quickly discouraged from divulging his secrets. Adam however, clearly has other intentions for the damaged vicar. Speaking of which, Billy's recovery is going well and Eileen has heard from Todd. It's good news! but how long will this good news last?. As Eva grapples with her pregnancy news, and with her sisters otherwise engaged, it falls on new confidante Shona to give her a shoulder to cry on. How long before Aidan finds out about the patter of tiny Connor feet?.

Meanwhile, Phelan is smug the factory roofing job is back in his hands, so the good news keeps rolling in for Eileen. No good news for Sean though as he has a disaster with his knickers sample and Craig splits from Bethany. Giving Gary more grief, Bethany has blocked Sarah's calls to him as some kind of revenge. Gary, having told the police about Phelan, lays it on to Tim about the whereabouts of Seb. Revisiting Anna in prison, Tim and Gary reveal all and a concerned Anna tell them they need to find Seb before Phelan does!.

With Phelan carted off by the police, will he have time to find Seb, or is it game over for our favourite scouse serial killer?.

Follow @Glenn_Writes as he reviews tonight's 8.30pm episode and finds out what happens next!

That's me done for another week, I'm off to ruin some more of Sean's samples!.
