Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 22nd February, 8 pm

Here we are for another Coronation Street Blog review in which I will try and avoid discriminatory language, violence, and scenes of panic or distress, which ITVX warned me of before I watched tonight's show. I normally take ITVX’s warnings with a pinch of salt but tonight’s certainly made a lot of sense. Some dark drama from Corrie this week, and as much as I enjoy reading Corrie fans tweet about their annoyance, and longing for days of old, I love this show a lot more when they delve just that bit deeper into Weatherfield’s darkest corners and modern society’s taboo subjects.

We shall start with stalking. Tonight, Justin’s weirdo voicemails and texts continue but Daisy’s waylaid with her influencer wedding arrangements whilst Daniel is teaching Max’s English lessons at the young offenders unit. Daisy’s suddenly not keen on social media, with all things considered, and reopening her phone, she decides to take the latest batch of messages to show the police. again. It makes no difference so Daniel offers to screen Daisy’s messages for her until she realises the police officer has ‘liked’ all of her Instagram pictures as well! two words; met police.

At the STC, (young offenders/grooming/grassroots racism strand) Daniel gives Max some Larkin to read which is an interesting choice, and kudos to Corrie for That literary reference. With Ken off-screen, it's nice to know we've got Daniel and Roy to keep the high brow on it. Daniel is forgiving of the young lad's predicament and tells Alya that she should pay him a visit.

She responds by making it very clear that she’s still struggling following the stabbing, but Ryan manages to change her mind. As with all Corrie prison visits, the visit itself is only a few scenes further on (unrealistic or for dramatic purposes?), and she read him the riot act, though not the victim statement itself (which I expected at this point) whilst Max could only listen. Later, he calls David to tell him all about his braying from Alya and it seems her words have helped. He wants his family to pay him a visit.

Fuelled by her opening up, Alya decides to take the statement and read it out at Blake’s sentencing. I expect we won't see that particular scene as we got to hear the statement tonight instead. I didn't take note of who wrote Alya’s words but that was an astonishing piece of drama and my scene of tonight, if not this week. I am going to disregard this carbon copy of the very recent Sam / Harvey prison face-off due to the top-drawer drama. This right-wing story really took up the majority of tonight's drama in fact.

Spider is still trying to track down the mystery right-wing benefactor and decides to pay Griff a visit in prison to see if he can press him for information. Another prison scene. That's all I’m saying. Spider admits that the police have found Griff’s burner phone which could lead them to Griff's paymaster. Meanwhile, Maria is perplexed at councillor Len’s sudden change of opinion, just as Spider reveals that the police have a warrant ready to make an arrest. Spider tells Toyah that once the case is over, he may return to normal policing. I hope this means the return of his blonde boss!! David did try to get things back to normal tonight with Shona, but although she made peace with Maria, her husband was still in the doghouse and he even got an earful in the pub!

Elsewhere, Billy and Paul announce their re-coupling, and I'm pleased Todd had a nice part to play, just annoyed that the Archdeacon appears to be avoiding church for another week! Also glad to see Evelyn back and bringing some comedic light into this week's darker drama.

Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 15th February, 8 pm

Stephens's murky murderous tirade takes a different slant tonight as he uses Rufes’ Class A's to drug factory nemesis, Carla. Admittedly, as someone interested in micro-dosing psychedelics (I'm not kidding, I'm your multi-faceted Corrie fan) it wasn't the opening gambit I expected to use when reviewing tonight's Corrie but here we are. Tonight starts with Carla and Peter bickering over the motorbike bet in their swanky flat. It's very Carla in taste, isn't it? Also, nice to see that Dee-Dee has spiced up her and Paul’s flat, isn't it? Are we due some more interior work at other residents' houses? I'm thinking about Number one, specifically.

Back at the factory, Carla’s decided on a Rishi-style cabinet reshuffle, putting Sarah back into her old role whilst demoting Stephen. Feeling vengeful by her well-grounded accusations, Stephen remembers he has that LSD from Rufus, so he spikes her THE BOSS mug -partly in revenge, and probably to undermine her character. Considering he’s got two murders under his belt, isn't this all a bit bonkers? Carla feels the effects of the drug pretty quickly, and with the factory lot team bonding at the Rovers, THE BOSS is a bit out of sorts - much to Stephen’s delight. Can you imagine seeing Sean behind the bar whilst tripping your head off? I'm not surprised she felt off-colour. Stephen then sneaks back into work to shred some of Carla’s paperwork. Back at their flat, Carla is still tripping. Peter tells her to slow down with work before she has another psychotic episode. It seems Stephen’s plan has worked.

Meanwhile, I’ve always assumed Amy Barlow to be quite a brainbox, so why she invited her old headteacher/corner shop proprietor to be her short-term lodger is anyone’s guess. I'm assuming this is Corrie having a crack at intergenerational humour via Brian’s rather unique characterisation. Tonight, he’s got in the kitchen to cook for Amy, stealing her chocolate, and the house kitty. Later, Brian replenishes his takings and then gets invited to a uni gathering of Amy’s pals and embarrasses them all by lecturing them on studying, before getting drunk and skiving off work, like a real student. Amy vows to get him back together with Mary.

Alya’s 30th birthday is upcoming with no mood to party, whilst Zeedan gets a blast from the past when his wife/ex-wife Marriam turns up at number 6, telling him she forgives him for her Dad's death, wanting to get back with him and live in London. Alya tells her brother to take the job, lying that she's okay now following the stabbing. She’s not, definitely, but is keen to please her brother no-less.

I loved the Roys rolls scene tonight with Bernie, Gary, Maria, Spider, David, Todd, (and Debbie nosing in the background) We don't usually see that amount of cast in the cafe in one scene, do we? David’s still down in the dumps with all of the Max drama but good to see Maria defend him, and Todd’s sarcastic tea comment had me laugh out loud. Gary’s not laughing though and is displeased with his wife defending David’s fatherly skills, and with her covering for Audrey at the salon, it’s clear she’s drawn a line on where her loyalties lie.

Audrey tells Maria to try and clear David’s head, ahead of Shona’s return. Later, Sarah tells Adam that, with her career back on track, she’s no interest in another baby.

Elsewhere -Summer’s conditional offer for university inspires Paul to ask Billy for a drink. Paul fancies his chances at a reunion, but takes Dee-dee along as company, as Billy brings Summer with him. Paul denies his feelings for Billy to his flatmate making him think twice about how he should deal with them.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 2nd of February 7.30 & 8.30 pm

This week, Wednesday night’s Coronation Street concentrated on subterfuge and clashes between the houses of Barlow and Platt. The fall-out from the stair fall caused and affected a ream of street drama in this hour, which was all the better for it. Daniel has previous here (with Ken being victim N0.1) and what with the teacher lying to the police, the school, and his family about Max falling over his teacher manbag, it was a stark reminder of his past behaviour. A lie that didn't fool Adam, Ken, or David for that matter, but things still went in his favour. Max may have escaped with only a broken arm, but I guess Daniel is now slowly heading down a different path? Aside from Daniel’s lesser-seen dark-side, the scenes between David and Max have been top-drawer Corrie, delivering nuance, dramatic flair, and poignant emotion. It does now look like the Daniel and David rivalry will continue, and the clash between the houses of Platt and Barlow rumbles on. Those two alpha males are very similar, which is where the real clash may lay. It's reminiscent of that classic Barlow/Baldwin rivalry and I’m all for it.

This Barlow/Platt clash leads ever neatly to Adam and Sarah’s latest marital strife! How swanky is that Redbank apartment! It reminded me of Carla’s old place, and I doubt she had a smart oven, so you’d think Sarah would be pleased? I married a girl called Sarah too, and if I got her an HD oven, I imagine the response would be the same. In theory, this couple is a bit of a mismatch, but it works for me.

This story has also been a plot device in bringing Daisy and Daniel closer again, much to the dismay of loony Lydia. Those two would seem to be of a mismatch too, but their shared chemistry shines through the screen, and Daisy reminds of a younger Carla, in looks at least, so Daniel ending things with loony Lydia, was expected. Unexpected was Daniel getting offered that full-time position at Wethy high, and telling the truth to Daisy about the stair fall. Considering she's hardly been a beacon of morality since her inception on the street, I was shocked at her response. Has the vacous femme fatale met her match?

Also in the Platt house, Audrey’s seeing double may be less about cataracts and more about daytime drinking, perhaps? Shona’s revitalised personality was a bit of a ballache to start with, but tying her to Rita in The Kabin, could well be a saving grace. Seeing Aud and Reet reunite and these two titans of the street battling it out were my absolute favourite scenes of tonight's episodes. I’ve watched Corrie since 1997, and Audrey has always had a drink in hand, so that's not going to be the issue is it?

Overall, we had a strong couple of episodes tonight, heaving with drama, good writing, warring families, and blasts from Corrie past.

Elsewhere tonight (or, things that didn’t float my boat); Kelly struggles after upsetting Maria, and Asha and Roy battle with Nina’s emotional frailty.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Thursday 22nd of Feb 2018 8.30pm

Welcome to Thursday's late edition of the Coronation Street Blog. It's just the half hour again tonight as we all watched The Brits last night, didn't we?. Anyway, let's delve into this extra/re-scheduled episode and find out what happened!.

Tonight's episode begins at breakfast time. Liz dashes down the street (all rollers and curlers al'a Hilda Ogden) proposing lunch at The Bistro with Eileen to reunite the friendship. Pat, however, has a big day ahead.

David rolls in drunk doing the 'walk of shame' after a night on the tiles with Josh, smelling like Audrey at Christmas!.

Billy dopes up on methadone for breakfast and it's nearly his birthday - but will his brother bring him drugs as a special gift?.

At Roy's Rolls, Johnny is ready to tend to Roy's allotment, and invites Liz over, but not before her reconciliation dinner with Eileen.

At The Bistro, the reconciliation soon turns sour as the ladies track record with feckless men, soon rattles the pair of them. Is this friendship doomed?.

Meanwhile, Sarah's smile at Josh is suddenly a shock as she spots Billy's brother Lee waltzing down the street (he did kidnap her once if you remember). David promises to defend his sister and violently confronts Lee, luckily Josh comes to his rescue. Revealing this history to his new best friend, is 'psycho' David about to make a return, and will Josh assist in helping him?

Over at Nicola's flat, a holed up Seb is sat chilling to tunes with massive headphones on, little realising that Phelan is stood watching from a distance.

Back at No.11 Phelan catches up with Nicola, laying on his most psychotic, yet eerily charming demeanour. Looking shaken, it isn't long before the police come calling for Nicola. A concerned neighbour has called the cops about a disturbance at her flat. Could Phelan have called the cops? Seb certainly thinks so.

Deserting the allotment, Johnny hides in the disused factory and is soon greeted by Liz and a bottle of brandy. The boozed-up pair head back to The Bistro and Jenny (once again)is left looking none too pleased.  Will Jenny and Johnny be the next relationship to faulter?.

That's me done until next Wednesday at 7.30pm, I'm off to Nicks Bistro for a curry, I think there's one going spare!

Tara!
