Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 6 June 2025

Good evening.  I have a plane to catch so this will be quite a short update this evening.  First up we get the inevitable break up between George and Eileen.  It has been on the cards for some time and George eventually realises that his future is, at least for now, in Weatherfield and he accepts that he cannot trail off to Thailand in Eileen's wake.  She admits she loves him - but as a friend - and so George has to say it is over.  Eileen is definitely going - she also decides she hates her clothes and will buy new ones when she arrives.  Jason explains that you simply have to leave Thailand every three months - Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, or somewhere else and do some travelling before returning and carrying on as before.  There is a gathering in the Rovers - Sean and Steve both refer to Eileen as a mother figure and there is a brief recall of Jason with Becky before she married Steve.  Todd assures Eileen he will soon be on a plane to Thailand as well and Julie's money looks like it will be buying a share of a bar.  

Dee Dee had arranged lunch with Alya in the Bistro and is unable to make it.  Daniel in contrast was expecting to meet a friend in the Bistro for lunch - the friend has cancelled the table booking but forgot to cancel Daniel.  So Daniel and Dee Dee have a drink together and appear to be getting on well, explaining how things are going at the moment.  Daniel has just witnessed Brody and Dylan squaring up to each other on his way into the Bistro and can see both of them will be behind bars in next to no time.  Dee Dee sympathises as she knows people need support and no doubt seeds are being sown for some community activity for youngsters.  Daniel sees Dylan and Betsy on the swings later and tries some wise words to effectively remember that they both have supportive parents rooting for them whilst Brody doesn't and perhaps they could find a way of cutting him some slack (which immediately put me in mind of Kit (and family) helping the young Mick and look where that led).

Leaving the Bistro with Daniel (not quite hand in hand yet) Dee Dee gets the shock of her life -  James is back with the baby Laila as apparently Danny has been finding other interests when getting his restorative physio and the relationship is over.  Dee Dee considers that she cannot face having her baby in her face and throws an inevitable strop.  Later Ed sits her down in their rather attractively laid out back yard and Dee Dee regrets her earlier intemperance.  If James does not stay with Ed he will be sofa surfing with football friends and quite simply that is not suitable for a baby.  Dee Dee gives her consent for the two to live on the Street.

Ronnie has helpfully provided Leanne with a drill so she can put a shelf up.  Walking past them Tim and Sally jump to the inevitably wrong conclusion that they have been sharing some afternoon delight and Debbie jumps to exactly the same wrong conclusion - she is getting nowhere with trying to put things right.  The Bailey boys - Ed, Ronnie, James and Michael all gather to celebrate all being single again.

Kev offers Carl some regular work in the garage as he is going part time for a while - Abi really wants Carl gone but he inevitably accepts the offer and so will be around for a while.

Millie (Theo's eldest daughter) spent last night on Eileen's sofa as, fortuitously, Jason was elsewhere with his mates.  Millie refuses to go home and apologise to her mother unless Theo comes home permanently with her.  Theo is not prepared to do that.  Millie hangs around like a bad smell most of the day and then decides the protest has gone on long enough and goes back to Danielle.  Can we have more of Danielle please?  Anyway with Eileen and George listening we hear Theo saying he wished he had been honest with Danielle much sooner - being honest is important.  That has a huge impact on the two of them but before they can talk Eileen is summoned to the police station where it is confirmed that she will face no charges in connection with Julie's death.

For Eileen's final departure the StreetCars cabs are parked up along the Street and the drivers all sound their horns as Steve drives Eileen to the airport.  Steve cannot imagine the cab office without her.  George gives Eileen a present - a neck pillow and they hug each other before she goes.

And before I go let us celebrate Eileen.  Sue Cleaver wants to do something different.  I hope she enjoys it and has a great time entertaining the public from a stage.  In the theatre the audience can directly show our appreciation of the cast on stage.  Only a week or so ago we went to see a play and my wife on reading the plot beforehand had convinced herself she would not enjoy it.  However the story had some great writing and the acting performances were superb - no it was not to be enjoyed but it proved to be enthralling and kept our rapt attention throughout - which is still great entertainment.  If Sue can deliver on stage then she can feel the direct appreciation for her efforts - something which is simply not possible with television and I hope that will be important to her in the future.  I wish her well.

I may not be here next week - but I will definitely be back in two weeks time.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 30 May 2025

Good evening.  Tonight we say bon voyage to Julie and and I shall not carp about the send off she is given with funeral car and a right royal drinks session in the Rovers later.  We open with George in touching mode telling Julie that the day is about her and that Eileen will pull through.  There is a pot bellied pig to accompany Julie as she was mad for them and for the Beautiful South.  Apparently Theo is tied up with a job so will not join them at the wake (he is needed in Ambridge for his 40th birthday party next week too, but the rumour is that he will not make it).  [I had not previously noticed that Hays Travel has gone and the unit is boarded up with only Sainsburys having a presence.]  Eileen has found a letter for Brian in Julie's documents.  After the service, back in the Rovers, we discover that whilst in Wrexham Julie was playing netball and learning Welsh.  Eileen is kicking herself for not seeing her.  There is a special memory book behind the bar.  Theo arrives.  Brian confronts Eileen with the contents of the letter - which includes the life assurance policy which previously Eileen did not admit to receiving.  Why did Eileen lie?  Tracy weighs in suggesting the Eileen buy them all another round.  An argument blows up out of nothing.  Tracy reminds everyone about the attempted embalming - so the money was to be split three ways.  This winds up Eileen enough to throw a glass of prosecco over Tracy.  George advises that the Wrexham Girls have gone home for a match and all of the funeral plans are worthless observes Eileen her tone of voice blaming George who is feeling like a punchbag.  Anyway Julie has a game she wants them to play.  Tracy whispers something in Steve's ear about her and Tommy and he departs immediately.  On the next round George turns to Eileen and proposes marriage.  She does not respond as there is a new rover returning - Jason has arrived and Eileen gives him a huge hug.

Brody and his mother discuss Mick's plea hearing.  Mick does not want Brody present.  Apparently Brody is about to sit his GCSEs and should be revising.  The hearing is also discussed between Kit and Sarah - the former only wants to hear Mick confirm that he is guilty as he cannot deny it.  Mick reveals to Lou that Kit hired the hit men who did him over.  Kit will want to get to know Brody and then rekindle matters with Lou - which seems unlikely to me.  Later Lou is able to tell Bernie that Mick is pleading not guilty.  She also tells Bernie that Kit had Mick beaten up.  Lou tells Brody she will deal with Kit.  Lou arrives at Kit's front door to deliver a piece of her mind.  She says that Brody is not Kit's so he is to stay away from Brody.  Sarah has not taken the news of Kit's fatherhood well.  Lou warns Brody to stay away from Kit and not exact any revenge, but he is not listening.      

Maria is surprised to hear that Liam is at the builder's yard as he should be revising for his GCSEs.  Gary is ambivalent.  He has Ed working for him from today and is not sure Ed will take well to having a kid around.  However it might be a better experience than with Mick and Maria suggests that Liam should be Ed's gopher.  Ed decides to send Liam to get a tin of elbow grease but Gary catches it before it gets out of hand and Lian reverts to hiding in his bedroom from all these workplace bullies.  Gary later phones Liam to apologise but it goes to answering machine.  Ed is able to reassure Gary that Liam looks up to Gary and his tool belt.  He adds Liam will be all right.  

Carl is suddenly under cars at Kev's garage and his new found colleague Fiona is soon on the phone saying that there is a car available for an MoT.  Tyrone is having to look after Dorin so Kev (who has had his hair cut short) is willing to have Carl working there.  Later Abi makes it clear that she does not believe Carl is doing this for Kev.  They argue and she goes to get him a pasty so he can phone Fiona and get the car delivered - FD61 DWY.  Abi returns with a very hot pasty and catches Carl looking at the MoT forms - as if he knows what he is doing.  Later she watches him not doing very much to the car and it seems Fiona has another car needing attention already.  

Noah, the clerk at St Saviour's who has helped Billy with the funeral arrangements, comes into the Rovers prompting Theo to leave to make a call.  It transpires that Noah was one those who prayed over Theo during his conversion therapy.  Theo and Todd are polite to Noah - although Todd is clearly seething.  Eventually Noah departs so Theo can calm down.  Todd follows Noah into the street and challenges him.  Noah responds that he hates the sin not the sinner but Theo is displeased by Noah and his holier than thou attitude.  Noah is taking a taxi home and asks Steve if he can hire the Community Centre and asks about embalming the body before the autopsy and that possibly Eileen did alright on the life insurance so it might look dodgy.  Steve takes his fare away.

George does not get his answer - Eileen thinks he is joking and later tells him that she has not wanted to hear the proposal because she does not want to marry him.  Jason has been dumped by Lynsey he reports and Mary is organising karaoke.  Jason does not appear likely to be waiting long for his next conquest as Glenda makes her availability abundantly clear.  Mary and Brian tunelessly launch into "Islands in the Stream".  Billy introduces Noah to Todd and Todd's boyfriend Theo and they all shake hands with neither Theo or Noah referring to past knowledge of each other.  Eileen makes a brief speech about Julie and then stumbles so Todd steps in to reference Julie's reunion with Brian and her support for Theo as Todd's boyfriend.  He finishes with saying Julie will be really missed. And proposes a drink in her honour.  After a failed apology by George, Eileen decides she has had enough and goes home.  George eventually follows her and promises not to talk about the proposal but cannot help himself.  Eileen is honest  in saying that she did not want to hear the proposal because she did not want to hurt him - but she does not want to marry him, she wants to feel that she should want to marry him - but she doesn't.  George is of course very hurt.

Good to see Jason back, obviously we all know that it is not going to last but I hope that he and Eileen can enjoy the next few days.  Noah is obviously the next baddie on the Street - for some value of "baddie".  And given all the people who know about Kit's involvement in Mick's assault you wonder how long the secret can stay that way.  Of course Gary murdered Rana and Rick Neelan and has yet to pay the price (unless you count being married to Maria).  It was also odd that Noah seemed to know about the allegations about Eileen / George etc as the contretemps happened prior to his arrival.

Before I go I may or may not be here for the next two weeks.  I am heading for a week in the Azores and fitting in writing these reviews may not be possible or at least one of them will be very short.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 18 April 2025

I open with a question.  Alya left her last job and Adam refused to employ her - does she have a job apart from Speed Dahl with Leanne?  And with Yasmeen gone has she moved in with Adam wherever he is living (is he with Daniel?)?  Please let me know.  Asha meanwhile is ripping off the family business for eggs and colouring books for the quads.  When she delivers the goodies she tells Gemma that she had her hair done at Audrey's and it was kicking off in there.   Something to do with the new stylist - Gemma dashes off to find out what is happening.  Turns out that Maria is somewhat critical of Lou's lack of skills as one customer has left looking worse than when she arrived.  Gemma is unable to stop Lou throwing hair dye over Maria but she then bundles Lou out of the door.  Outside Lou admits she is worried about her son - what son?  Her eldest.  Later in the Rovers Audrey tells Maria that Lou has apologised by phone and as has brought in a lot of new custom Lou will be getting a second chance.

Sarah makes it quite clear what she wants to Kit and it is not an Easter Bunny - in the Bistro at 6 with bunny ears (and it was implied not much else).

Sean whispers to Daniel (hidden behind the screen) how Brody get his hands on a burner phone whilst on the other side of the cafe the recently arrived Mick uses supersonic hearing to know that Brody is involved.  Sometimes the ability of people to hear conversations beggars belief.  But why is he so interested in the discussion?  

Brody is telling someone that the pathetic little moron and his father will get sorted out very soon as he never did nothing, the camera swings round and he see his father - Mick - who says he will deal with it. Meanwhile in the Rovers where Sean is on bar duty using his bat-like hearing gathers that Lou is telling Gemma about her boy Brody who is in the STC - but he is a good kid - and he is stuck in that place with people far worse than the ones he was hanging around with before and now he has been accused  of extortion, which he could not spell, let alone do it!  Sean gets Gemma to confirm that Lou is bully Brody's mother.  Gemma points out that they live round the back and Sean needs to be careful.

Sarah finds that her spare room has been getting a real work out as she encounters dodgy builder, Welsh, Gavin Moss Todd and the undercover police office Harrison Burns scaffolder Theo in her flat.  I will say no more.  Those who know, know.

Sarah agrees a pre-Kit drink with Todd in the Bistro and they are interrupted by Gabrielle (can she move onto the Street permanently please?) as they discuss the reasons why Todd and Theo cannot go anywhere else and Todd agrees to give some notice in future.  Danielle joins them for a drink and starting talking about public displays of affection which leads to Todd kissing Sarah (as Danielle thinks they are together) just as Kit arrives for his date.  Kit stays and accepts Sarah's entirely reasonable explanation, even if it is very complex.  Danielle later invites Todd and Sarah for a barbie some time soon.  Sarah catches up with Kit and they are getting friendly when she sees Danielle and Theo driving by and jumps back - which really upsets Kit and he leaves.  

Gemma and Lou are back at Number 5 and as they are ordering a chinese Bernie asks for hers to be delivered to Number 7 as she has had the quads for hours and is off to put her feet up!  Mick arrives and tells Gemma that should anyone ask he has been there for a couple of hours - and his need for the alibi is that someone has given Sean a right pasting.  Sean is rescued by Theo who is late for the Bistro who gets him an ambulance to the hospital where they patch him up and he tells PC Tinker who dunnit.  Mick is invited to assist police with their enquiries but he claims to have been looking after the quads.  Word of the assault soon spreads through t'Street residents.  In the STC Daniel tells Dylan what has happened to Sean.  Mick catches Gemma at the back of the Rovers and makes it clear that she needs to support his alibi as she does not want to make an enemy out of him.  Additionally he emphasises that  Sean needs to behave.  Lou on the other hand cannot believe that Gemma is suggesting that Mick might be responsible for duffing up Sean.  Later Sean turns up at Gemma's and pieces together that Mick must have overheard him in Roy's earlier and she tells him that it was a bad idea telling the police - he might do worse next time.  Gemma suggests he takes the statement back and after some thought, given that Mick has threatened the quads, he goes to the police station to do just that.

Having covered everything else I should record that there was a story involving Dee Dee.  During this story, evidence was presented that the rate of death for women of black ethnic origin is 3.7 times the rate suffered by women of white ethnic origin.  I report this fact as it is important and (according to my subsequent investigations) no-one knows why.  Given the staffing I have seen in most hospitals I have used I find it hard to believe that this is down to the cause being attributed by the programme.  I would welcome a proper study and proper actions to ensure the causes are understood and addressed, however I do not feel I can cover that storyline here as I have seen nothing yet which feels appropriate to t'Street.  Feel free to put me right in the comments and on Twitter.
