Coronation Street's most prolific writer, Peter Whalley, has died

ITV Coronation Street has confirmed today that scriptwriter Peter Whalley has passed away.

Peter Whalley was at the heart of the Coronation Street writing team for 35 years and wrote 600 episodes, more than any other writer in the programme's history.

Peter was given a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2009 British Soap Awards before retiring in 2013.

Coronation Street Executive Producer Kieran Roberts today paid tribute to Peter. He said: "Peter was not just a prolific and brilliant writer, he was also an invaluable source of great ideas and equally great wisdom in our story conferences. Everyone who knew Peter will also remember the lovely man behind the great writing talent."

Peter Whalley was born in Colne, Lancashire. He started writing when teaching at a school in Pontefract, but gave this up after joining Coronation Street as a scriptwriter in 1979. He became the senior writer on the Coronation Street team.

Peter also wrote two episodes of the Corrie spin-off Coronation Street - After Hours and he wrote the live 40th anniversary episode of Corrie in 2000.

In addition to writing for our favourite telly show, Peter Whalley wrote 40 radio plays, two stage plays and ten novels. He's also written more for TV including The Good Samaritan, a one-off drama starring Shane Ritchie and penned episodes of Angels, The Jury, Albion Market, Families, Revelations and created and wrote Castles.

When Peter Whalley was given a Special Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards in 2009 he said:  Peter, who has worked on the nation's favourite show for three decades, said in an interview: "It was a complete surprise and a great honour. After 30 years it's good to receive something for the mantelpiece. It's the best job there is. I can't think of a better one."

Ex-Coronation Street archivist and scriptwriter Daran Little today said this via twitter:

Our thoughts to go Peter Whalley's family at this sad time.

It’s Rita’s birthday and she spends it without husband Dennis who ran off with Gloria last week. Bu she does have Norris and her mates and makes the most of it in the Rovers with a vodka and tonic. “Are you all right?” Liz asks her when she hands over her drink. Rita manages a faint smile and raises her glass. “I will be,” she replies.

Determined to shake off Phelan’s feely hands, what does Anna go and do? Does she embarrass him publicly? No. Does she tell Owen so he can tell Phelan to back off? No. She texts Phelan and invites him round to her house for a private chat. Of course he gets the wrong idea and of course she shouldn’t have done it. It’s too much for Anna, as Phelan pins her against the wall and tries to kiss her before threatening her. Anna tells Izzy what’s happened and Izzy spills the beans to Gary – who gets angry, very angry. You won’t like him when he’s angry.

Gary waits until he finds Phelan on his own at the building site later and whops him over the head with a two-by-four, leaving him for dead, unconscious on the ground. Gary’s in a state and calls Owen to tell him what he’s gone and done but when the two of them go back to where Phelan lay fallen, he’s not there any more, he’s gone. It’s a state of affairs that worries Gary and Owen somewhat, it’s far to say. The Windass/Armstrong clan (Windrong? Armstrass?) have another scare this week when baby Jake gets a temperature and has to be rushed to hospital. Fortunately it’s just a virus and the baby’s ok.

At Roy’s Rolls another brown paper package (not tied up with string) arrives for Roy. It’s yet another parcel that Hayley had ordered for Roy, to be delivered after her death, and what a lovely reminder of Hayley it is. The packages perk Roy up and he reveals to his curious customers that the parcels contain models for his model railway that he’s building, a reconstruction of the line that ran from Sheffield to Manchester, the very line where he first developed his love of trains.

Eileen’s got a lot on her plate this week. She knows that Todd slept with Marcus and spends the week berating her wayward son for trying to break up Marcus and Maria. Frankly, I wish he would. Marcus and Maria together are dull, dull, dull. Then Eileen’s jealous after she spots Liz eyeing up Jason’s dad Tony in the pub. And then she’s having to console Jason who’s been told by Dev and Kal that he’s not getting the contract for building the new gym. Kal’s dad Sharif has turned up and given the work to a family friend instead. So in this maelstrom of maleness, Eileen stands alone as the female voice of reason with a biscuit and a cuppa by her side.
Finally this week, Beth and Sinead spend their day off work together. The ladies lunch in the Bistro and play bingo at night. When they come out of the bingo and wait for the bus, a young lad tries to mug a pensioner who’s standing beside them in the queue. Beth hits the mugger over the head with her boot, which is in her hand at the time as she was massaging her blister, and she’s hailed a heroine by Kirkeh when she gets home.

And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://www.corrie.net/updates/weekly/subscribe.htm

Roy’s nowhere to be seen this week, he’s been missing since Hayley’s funeral. I don’t know about you, but I’m worried sick about him.

In other news, Tina’s back from that London and back behind the bar at The Rovers Return.  Norris overhears Carla talking about Rob kissing Tina, and it’s news that Norris is keen to pass on as quickly as possible, to Tracy of course. She lunges at Tina in the pub and dumps Rob, despite Deirdre telling her not to be so hasty: “You might get a weekend away out of him, you know, a mini-break or summat.” Carla wastes no time and sets up her newly-single brother on a date with Tina in the Bistro. It turns awkward when Carla and Peter make it a double-date and Peter twinkles his eyes at Tina when he should be canoodling Carla.

There’s another love triangle going on when Andrea, who Steve fancies, is asked out by Lloyd. Andrea and Lloyd are now an item, although not one that works for this fan.  And it doesn’t really work for Andrea either, as she really wants Steve. And Steve really wants Andrea, which isn’t great news for Michelle, who’s fed up.

Anna’s starting to regret Owen getting into business with Phelan when Phelan makes it clear he wants to start getting into bed with Anna.  She can’t tell Owen as the building contract for work at The Mill is too lucrative to lose so she’s saying nowt, for now.

And finally this week, Rita’s not happy when Dennis gets cosy with Gloria again and accompanies her to a gig that Ritchie’s playing at.  But Rita needn’t worry too much, Gloria’s not fussed which fella she gets the most attention from and to Dennis’ dismay, Ritchie gets in first and whisks Gloria away after the gig.

And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://www.corrie.net/updates/weekly/subscribe.htm

How does Bob Marley like his doughnuts? Wi’jammin.   Hayley’s fond of jam too, which is just as well as Roy’s Rolls is turned into a jam-making factory after Hayley’s request for strawberries brings more than she bargained for. Kirk and Tyrone drive to the strawberry farm (I don’t know where it is but I want to live there) to collect strawberries for Hayley as it’s the only thing she feels well and able enough to eat.  The problem is, they can’t just buy a punnet from the farm, they end up with a van load and so after Hayley’s eaten what she can, Roy’s café becomes a jam-making production line with Emily, Carla, Tyrone, Fiz, Jenna, Kirk and Mary who gets a bit too competitive in the jam-making stakes.

Although she’s grateful for the strawberries, the jam, the love and the care her friends have taken in preparing it all for her, Hayley’s in more pain this week and exhausted too.  She tells Roy it’s time for her to go, she wants to starts saying her goodbyes (crikey, I’m filling up just typing this) and so Roy wheels her down the cobbles in her wheelchair. And while I’m sure the pavement would have been a lot smoother ride and caused her less pain, it wouldn’t have been Corrie if he hadn’t wheeled her right down the middle of the Street, bumpy cobbles and all.

Hayley says her goodbyes to Ches and Sinead on the Street, to Carla in the factory and to Tracy with a well-deserved retort: “Your mother’s ashamed of you, your daughter barely knows who you are and your donor kidney would have left you if it could.”

It’s time for Hayley to go, she tells Roy. It’s time. She wants to end her own life on her own terms before the pain becomes too much, before her mind reverts to life before she became Hayley. She wants to go when the time is right for her.  “My body’s shutting down and my mind’s not far behind it.”  “When?” Roy asks her, not daring to hear her what she might say.  “Tomorrow,” she replies.

Elsewhere this week, all else pales into insignificance but life goes on and so must this weekly update.

Marcus and Maria decide to buy a house together and go for a viewing on a place in Lowry Mews.  Todd’s not convinced (and neither am I) that Marcus is happy being with a woman and tries it on with Marcus, wondering if the new house is on a bend or a straight bit of the road.  I fear Marcus is more stuck in a cul-de-sac with Maria.   Todd tries it on with Marcus and almost gets a kiss on the cobbles before Eileen catches them at it and puts a stop to Marcus coming out of the closet, again. For now, anyway

Owen decides to go into business with Pat Phelan on a new building project called The Mill.  Phelan’s been declared bankrupt and is clearly a shady character with a dodgy past so there’s plenty to put Anna off from Owen getting into debt to fund the new flat build, but he does it anyway. As the champagne cork pops in Anna’s kitchen to celebrate the deal, Pat Phelan’s trophy wife coos: “I’d have that noise as my ringtone if I could.”

And finally this week, Dev takes St Ella to the Weatherfield Retailers’ Ball.  It’s a bit of a non-story but did make me wonder whatever happened to W.A.R.T.S.?

This week's writers were Jonathan Harvey, Peter Whalley, Jan McVerry.  Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/11/exclusive-all-current-corrie-writers.html

It’s a Weatherfield wedding for Carla and Peter, or as I like to call them by their celebrity name, CarPet.

Carla looks lovely in her frock made by Hayley and Peter’s almost driven to drink the night before the wedding but is saved by the doorbell when Tina turns up.  The two of them have a heart to heart before Carla returns and stops them from getting to know each other more. Anyway, the wedding takes place somewhere posh, as you’d expect, and CarPet are hitched without too many hitches.  “I promise to help you be the best you can be,” says Carla in her vows (wasn’t that line lifted from Gillette?) But when the partying starts, Carla has too much to drink and after the do ends, Peter and Tina end up snogging while Carla snores away in the bridal suite.

There were some lovely comic moments this week when Tim decides to become a window cleaner. It’s not the career Sally would have liked her new fella to have, especially when his new job comes with a manky old van that he parks outside Sally’s house in full view of all the neighbours.  Sally’s not too put off though, as she asks Tim to move in, and knowing which side his bread is buttered, of course he says yes.  Sally’s got more on her mind when she’s left in charge of the factory as the new Mr and Mrs Barlow go off on honeymoon and she’s given the keys to the factory. “I’ll have to put these somewhere safe,” she tells Tim, waving the keys and a potential new plotline in front of Tim’s greedy eyes.

Hayley’s son Christian turns up again but this time Fiz gets to him first, warning him to back off because Hayley’s got cancer.  But Christian doesn’t back off, he returns once more with a plea for Hayley to give him five thousand pounds and in return she can see her grandchildren.  Does she fall for the sorry sob story from her son? Yes, I’m afraid that she does. Roy can’t understand it. Fiz and Ches can’t understand it and neither can I, but Hayley tells them in the Rovers that she’s had the best day ever meeting her grandkids and doesn’t begrudge Christian the cash.  A more cynical mind might ask if they were really his kids and add that he’ll be back for more dosh.

And finally this week, Dev decides to start to lose fat and keep fit. He buys himself the right gadgets, the outfits, the blood pressure monitor but doesn’t do much more than a few steps on his new treadmill in the corner shop before he decides it might not be for him. Or as Sophie says, “You’ve got all the gear, but no idea”.

And that’s just about that for this week.

This week's writers were Peter Whalley, Simon Crowther, Susan Oudot.  Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/11/exclusive-all-current-corrie-writers.html

It’s Hallowe’en week on Corrie and there’s a little horror in the shape of Faye’s friend Grace. She’s one of those kids who spots the weakness in others and winds them up summat rotten. First she causes a ruckus in Roy’s Rolls when she nicks money from the counter and has Anna blaming Sally blaming Anna for losing the money, while Grace has it all along. She puts it back with a smile and everyone’s grateful to her for spotting it. Then she gets Faye to change the date of her Hallowe’en party and it’s a conversation that Owen overhears, so he now knows how manipulative and mean Grace is and how much she’s pulling Faye’s strings.  At the Hallowe’en party, all hell’s let loose when little monster Grace picks on Simon and winds up Nick, who’s taken Simon to the do.  Nick loses control, lashes out and snaps Amy Barlow’s broomstick in half.  It’s exactly the sort of thing Grace wanted to happen and even Faye starts to wonder if her friend has taken things too far. Back home with mum Gail, Nick tells the old witch to bat out and leave him alone, but she doesn’t. She harps on and harps on in the way that Gail does, until Leanne returns and tells Nick she thinks she still loves him and wants to try again.  She hugs him on the soft furnishings while giving one of those “oh eck, what am I doing?’ over the shoulder looks to camera that Corrie does so well.

Faye’s dad Tim’s at Anna’s Hallowe’en party and was supposed to have picked up Faye’s costume but of course he forgot and it’s left to Anna to save the day for Faye, once again. Sally still can’t see through Tim though, and gives him a set of house keys for him to come and go as he please.

Over at Underworld, Peter announces an Employee of the Month competition for the most productive knicker-stitcher. Beth’s out to win it and ropes in Sinead to do some secret stitching after hours and at home. Sinead’s not best pleased to be cheating for her aunty Beth, but agrees anyway.

In Barlow’s Buys, Rob lies to Tina and tells her if she apologises to Tracy for smashing the window then he’ll pay the cost of having it repaired, but she mustn’t tell Tracy about their secret deal. She does, of course. Well, you would, wouldn’t you? Just to get back at Tracy.  Tina ends up both apologising and paying and Tracy sulks to Deirdre about Rob going behind her back. “I think I love him, mam,” she moans in the front room just as there’s a knock at the door and a bunch of cheap flowers from Dev’s shop walks in with an apology and Rob behind them.

And finally this week, Eileen’s not happy. She’s broke and fed up and so Liz drags her along to the Rovers with Deirdre for a  girls’ night out. Or in. Whichever you prefer. The three of them get tipsy and moan about missing men. Deirdre pulls Sean to her side and gives him a cuddle. “You’re barking up the wrong tree, there,” notes Liz. “It worked for Maria with Marcus!” laughs Deirdre.  “Maria didn’t bark, she howled!” replies Eileen, in a very funny scene that ended with the three of them singing “Sisters are doing it for themselves” at the Rovers bar. Cracking stuff.  And the evening ends with a smile on Eileen's face when she gets a text message from Todd saying he's coming for a visit.

And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://www.corrie.net/updates/weekly/subscribe.htm

Owen’s not a happy man and is deep in debt due to customers who can’t, or refuse to pay their bills.  One customer in particular is causing Owen some grief, a big fella by the name of Pat Phelan who’s built like a brick out house and looks like the sort who’s got dodgy mates, very dodgy mates.  To get the money that he owes him, Owen pops round to Pat Phelan’s house and when he finds the door locked and Pat out, he and Gary-me-laddo break in.  No alarms go off and Owen rides off on Pat’s motorbike just as Pat returns home and collars Gary who speeds off in the van.   Anna’s not best pleased to find out that Owen’s nicked Pat’s bike and tells him she doesn’t want any bother brought to her door.  Too late.  Pat Phelan tracks Owen down and just when you think there’s going to be a gang of his dodgy mates, very dodgy mates, backing Pat up to help knock Owen down, Pat goes all soft and mushy and gives Owen an envelope with thousands of pounds of used notes inside to get the motorbike back, which belongs to his wife.  I quite liked Pat, menacing on the outside and cuddly on the inside, I hope we’ll see more of him in a cuddle-menace sort of way.

Over at th’ospickle, Nick wakes up and remembers everything.  Oh yes, everything.  When Kylie and Leanne visit, Leanne urges an uncomfortable Kylie to show Nick pictures of baby Lily that she’s got on her phone.  Leanne thinks she’s doing Nick a favour when she tells him, “Look, it’s Lily, it’s David’s baby” but Nick’s reply is a slow yet definite “Not….his.   Mine”.  Leanne hasn’t a clue what he’s on about it but Kylie knows that Nick knows and tells Gail who knows what Kylie knows and Nick knows but neither of them know that David knows although David knows that they both know.

Elsewhere this week, Daddy Connor arrives from Ireland to spend time with Michelle and grandson little Liam.  He’s as surprised as we all are that Marcus and Maria are still together, but Michelle’s confused as to why her dad would turn up without her mum. Anyway, she rings Mammy Connor who tells her she’s chucked Daddy out, and so he’s turned up in Weatherfield now.  If his roving eye lands on another lady, it could well be Liz McDonald who’s due to return very soon as Steve manoeuvres to buy the Rovers.

And finally this week, Julie and Brian are going through a tough patch as she wants to adopt and he doesn’t.  Then she has a chat with Rita in the Rovers about the perils and pitfalls of fostering a child.  It’s a lovely scene as Rita reminisces about Sharon and Jenny, but not without remembering that Sharon tried to kill herself and Jenny’s dad tried to kill Rita.  They chat in the pub with Deirdre listening in, finding herself a bit rudderless without her Ken. Anyway, Julie mentions fostering to Brian as an alternative to adoption but he’s still not keen and I wonder if this signals the end for this wonderful couple before Brian bids bye-bye as we know he surely will.

And that’s about that for this week.

This week's writers were Peter Whalley and Jonathan Harvey.  Find out more about the Coronation Street writing team at http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/11/exclusive-all-current-corrie-writers.html

With due regard to the recently departed, hello, good evening and welcome. I am not Glenda who is away on holiday but I am here to let you know about events this week in Weatherfield.

Glenda ended last week's update with Chesney taking Katie and Joseph back into his home. And he was mighty glad that Joseph was there. But something was wrong - indeed it was so wrong that instead of getting Katie into bed he slept on the sofa. And indeed before long Katie had worked out that it was not going to work and stormed back to Anna's. Fiz decided to take matters in hand and told Sinead that Katie was gone and there was a Sinead shaped hole in Chesney's life. Sinead is far from stupid however and did not fall for it.

Going slightly back in time the week was of course dominated by the Bank Holiday. And Anna was having a BBQ and Sally was having a Garden Party as she was in full upward social climbing mode. Who would have the most guests? Who would have the best barbie / party? Who would fall out over the garden fence? Yes it was a right old carry on. Steve and Michelle at Sally's and bored out of their minds, Fay stuck at Anna's with Tim at Sally's. Sean hearing strange noises and vanishing (see below). And the bottle of ketchup. Someone had put a bottle of ketchup on the fence. Anna's party had run out. The bottle was picked up. It was Sal's. All hell breaks loose and Anna and Sally are fighting over the ketchup until the bring the fence down.

Roy and Hayley return from holiday and first have to be told that Sylvia has abandoned ship. Roy is understandably morose that his mother cannot face the cancer and has runaway to Hastings. (I drove through there the other day - apart from the sunshine I am not sure that Weatherfield is not more attractive). At least attending the two parties takes their minds off their own problems for a little while - and they have been on a very long drive and have been everywhere, they've been everywhere.

Sean was hearing noises off - so where did he go, oh yes next door where Kylie is on her own and after tidying a plate away suddenly goes into labour making the oddest noises. Sean summons the cavalry - Gail, Leanne and David. This being Weatherfield and a baby being borne prematurely on a bank holiday you can't get an ambulance for love nor money and for the next 20 minutes or so Kylie continues to make the oddest noises ever heard on a soap. Somehow the only award she will get will be the one for over-acting. Anyway Gail delivers a baby (Leanne is about as much use as a wet weekend as she keeps reading from the manual). No midwife either. Of course they all turn up after the baby is born. The baby luckily looks like Kylie, not David or Nick. And eventually David and Kylie decide she will be called Lily.

Luckily Sean finding the family in the Bistro prevented David telling Leanne that he was responsible for Nick losing his rag and being in the path of the lorry when it crashed into them. Later David cannot remember what was so important. Tina is not sympathetic and she knows she does.

But the baby drama is not over. With David out of earshot Granny Gail wants to know which of her sons is responsible and starts telling Kylie she needs to arrange a DNA test. Meddlesome Granny.

Nick remains in a coma and we spend very little time in the hospital. Oh and Kylie is so fit and the baby is OK so no hospital visit for her. Gail is trying out some new clogs and nearly falls downstairs - she ought to be more careful or she will be in hospital.

And we end with Roy and Hayley preparing for the operation. Roy has arranged a special meal which Jenna and Anna serve before the horrors of hospital. Hayley disappears, allegedly to buy some magazines, for a couple of hours and Roy is getting worried about making sure she has everything. Mary brings in three large books and there is a lengthy discussion over the various authors, the only one I know is Dan Brown. Then Hayley re-appears - she has gone shopping and bought some new slippers - really pushing the boat out Hailes. And then we get to the hospital and whilst we know (thank you for spoiling everything) the outcome there are several touching moments of devotion as Roy prepares to leave Hayley overnight (on nil by mouth) but promises to return in the morning.

I think I missed Karl's stag party - it did not go well and was called off after the first round. So hardly worth mentioning with so much else going on. And St Ella is not sure if she should get married anyway whilst Nick is laid up. Jason on the other hand is not sure about Karl and they have a bit of a bust up in the gents until Dev calms them down. Karl admits to torching Jason's van.

And Craig is causing concern for Beth and Kirk. He must be worried about going back to school.

And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/corrieweeks and I'll be back next week around this time.

Baby Jake leaves hospital this week and Gary and Izzy are all fingers and thumbs and hurt feelings. Gary’s upset that the baby settles better with Izzy than with him, and Izzy’s hurt that Gary’s hurt and little Jake, he just does what a baby does and sleeps and eats and smells. Both parents want to spend more time with baby Jake and decide to go part-time at work to give little Jake full-time care.

In the midst of all the nesting and baby-love, Tina takes off on holiday, to top up her tummy tan with Tommy.

Down at the station, fireman Paul gets hauled in to see his boss who tells him a formal complaint has been made against him for making a racist remark. Paul’s livid, wrongly accuses Lloyd of making the complaint and attacks him on the cobbles.  He’s even more livid when he finds out it was good Christian child Sophie Webster who has made the complaint and knows now he really has to apologise to Lloyd.   With a four pack of cheap beer as a peace offering, Paul makes his way to the cab office where Lloyd shakes Paul’s hand, accepts his apology this time around and takes a can. The fact he keeps it for later and doesn’t share it with Paul right there and then was a lovely little touch, even if he was working, it was like an acknowledgement to Paul that he might have apologised, but he wasn’t forgiven and the incident certainly will never be forgotten.

But Lloyd has more on his mind than an idiot racist. He and Mandy aren’t getting on well and he has to defend daughter Jenna who gets a job in Roy’s Rolls when Mandy thinks she could do much better. She could, I’m sure, but for now, there’s a job in Roy’s Rolls that’s free and it’s hers.

The job in Roy’s Rolls comes up after Hayley tells Roy she wants to take a holiday, to think about the future and plan for her op.  Roy’s started sleep-walking again and the two of them need some space and some time. Mary kindly offers them the use of her motorhome, in the hope that Norris will ask her to move with him and Emily now she’s made herself homeless.   And with that, the Croppers are gone, leaving Sylvia, Anna and Jenna serving up the bacon barms.

Down at the Bistro, Nick’s not best pleased to read critical online reviews . It’s all David’s work and he steps up his game by nicking cash from the Bistro and sending Leanne a poison pen letter asking her if she knows where her husband was on Christmas night - and with whom.  Leanne begs Nick for the truth, which he won’t give her and lies through his teeth as they both anguish over who could have sent the letter to Leanne. “It has to be someone we know,” cries Leanne, as Nick’s eyes pan over to his brother. From somewhere under Nick’s breath and from the bottom of his soul, he whispers: “David. It’s David.”  And now that Nick knows that David knows about Kylie’s baby, there’s going to be trouble,  you know.

Finally this week, Rob and Tracy open their second-hand shop in the old bookies shop and call it Barlow’s Buys. It’s full of old knock-off ,  some of which Tracy buys from Rob’s made Fat Lenny, who’s thin.  Tracy tries to sell an iPhone to Mary who tells her: “I’ve got pianist’s fingers, which is much like housemaid’s knee, only more middle-class.”  Rob’s not best pleased that Tracy’s bought stuff from Fat Lenny as he knows how dangerous he is to do business with. “He killed someone!” he yells at Tracy to which she replies: “Everbody makes mistakes!”. Wonderful stuff.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Coronation Street weekly update, spreading peanut shaped happiness

GOT KINDLE? GET CORRIE!
Corrie weekly updates from 1995 - 18 years in 18 e-books

David’s plan to cause carnage continues this week when he scrapes his key down the side of Peter’s car, who blames the damage on Nick, of course.  And then he sends flowers to Leanne in the Bistro, hoping that Nick will get petulant about possible petals from Peter. But if David was hoping that Nick and Peter’s feud would fester and fire up and result in Nick and Leanne splitting, he’s wrong as it just brings them closer, with Leanne telling Peter to grow up and get out.

And so David takes his campaign of revenge over to Gail, where in some of the most funny/horrible/cringe-worthy/still funny even though I know I shouldn’t laugh kind of a way, David goes nuts. No really, he does. He chucks peanuts at Gail, one by painful, salty one. And Gail just stands there and takes the bitterness from David and the saltiness from the nuts, she mopes and moans and heads to Sally’s for  red wine. Come on Gail, grow a pair! Of er, nuts!  “I’m just trying to spread a little peanut shaped happiness, that’s all,” David declares as Kylie wonders if her husband has a kernel of knowledge about their baby’s real dad.

Emily tells Rita and Dennis about Norris’ nasty comment about “the vultures circling” to get their hands on her will and her house.  And so, in a bizarre move, Emily tells Norris that in exchange for the 13 years he’s lived as her lodger, for looking after her, cooking and cleaning, he can have No. 3.  Yes, she wants to give him her home. Now then, I’m not sure what’s going on here. Doesn’t Emily remember that she doesn’t own No. 3 because she gave it to Richard Hillman in an equity release scheme or are we Corrie fans, along with Emily, supposed to forget that bit?  I had hoped for more from this new Corrie producer. Anyway, Norris is smug with himself for getting Emily’s house off her although Emily tells Rita and Dennis he’ll also be getting the bills and maintenance to go with it
Over at Roy’s Rolls, Roy opens up to Hayley and finally talks about the turmoil he’s in that’s lead him to go sleepwalking in the night and almost setting the café on fire.  Hayley gets Roy to visit the GP but just before his name’s called, he’s gone. Hayley’s not best pleased and drags him back in. Roy’s told he has to spend a night in a sleep clinic to get to the root of the problem and in the meantime to try meditation, not medication. Sylvia huffs and puffs at the notion of this. “You might as well hug a tree,” she declares. “Or rub on some essential oil of ramalamadingdong.”  Wonderful stuff.
Tim returns from Newcastle to two full and blazing barrels from Anna and Owen for leaving Faye home alone. In his defence, he didn’t know Faye wasn’t staying with Anna, but against him is the fact that he never checked. He admits to Faye he’s a lousy dad and she can only agree and moves back in with Anna where she’s given a group hug and sausage mash.  Anna’s so determined not to lose Faye again that she tells Owen she wants rid of Tim - from Faye’s life and Weatherfield.  Owen puts the frighteners on Tim  - who’s getting cosy in the Rovers with Sally – and warns Tim he has to leave.  “You sling yer hook.  Got that?”.  Whether he’s got it or not, I don’t think Tim’ll be leaving any time soon, not now he’s got Mrs Webster on the pull.

And finally this week, Leanne suggests putting on a student night in the Bistro.  In July? After term’s ended?   Yup, that’ll work.

And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/corrieweeks
