Corrie's Katy Armstrong joins Strictly Come Dancing

Georgia May Foote who played Katy Armstrong on Coronation Street, has today been confirmed for BBC Strictly Come Dancing.

Born in Manchester, Georgia lives in Bolton with her family. She’s in a relationship with Coronation Street actor, Sean Ward, who plays  Callum Logan in the soap.

Georgia said: “I’m scared of getting brain freeze and messing up the dances. But I’m determined not to let that happen because I hope to practise enough and be solid.”

Although she has admitted she hasn’t “done any preparation as such”, she said she has been swatting up by “watching lots of YouTube clips of all the types of dances.” And if practice and video research doesn’t help, Georgia’s hoping that her “acting skills will help” get her through.

As for her dancing history, Georgia says: “I used to dance a bit when I was younger but it was mostly hip hop. I wasn’t allowed to go back to ballet because I had ‘naughty toes’, so I went to karate instead.”

Her hip hop experience must have left her with a love of all things bling: “I LOVE sequins. I’m definitely a bit of a magpie.” But don’t even mention canned tan: “No to spray tans! They don’t suit me. I look better with a natural suntan, I prefer going ‘dirty brown’ from the sun instead of orange from a spray tan.”

Linda Armstrong's return, for better or worse

I was looking forward to Owen's ex-wife's return. I thought it would be a good storyline to lead to the departure of Katy and, at some point, Owen. I looked forward to Owen getting a comeuppance by having his charade blown out of the water. And don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying that aspect very much.

Owen has never been a sympathetic character. He's a bully and has a temper and he's not usually very nice. He was brought in to be the "next" Len Fairclough, or that sort of character, and I think they did do that well. I never found Len all that likeable or sympathetic, either! Owen was a good father, though, even if a bit strict. We now find out that his ex-wife left the family for very different reasons than they believed and that Owen refused to let Linda see her children.

I've had a couple of points in this that have fallen flat for me. One was Linda not taking legal action and the other is the actor herself. I have no prior experience seeing her in anything so I don't know if her acting style is typical of her or not. I don't like it. Linda should be a bit more fiery, I think, pushing back and getting angry at Owen with a bit more spirit that she seems to be so far.  I had a few thoughts about it all over here.

Katy Armstrong: Career Girl

Back in the Sixties, they used to make career novels for young ladies to encourage them into suitable areas of employment.  Things like Air Hostess Ann and Fanny in Floristry.  These books existed to get schoolgirls enthused about the world of work, right up until they got married and devoted their lives to their husbands instead.  They don't print them any more, because they'd have to be called things like Call Centre Clara and Zero Hours Zoe and everyone would get terribly depressed.

It's a shame Weatherfield Library has closed because Katy Armstrong could do with a couple of these books; Yasmeen doesn't strike me as the kind of woman who'd update her stock very regularly so I'm sure there would have been some floating around.  Katy's been wandering around like a lost soul ever since her heartfelt desire to be a paramedic - a heartfelt desire prompted by nothing more than a chat from a slightly fit bloke - was destroyed by her hatred for blood.  One would have thought that an intelligent person might have realised that paramedics would occasionally see a drop of the red stuff, but as I said, this is Katy.  She seemingly thought paramedics just turned up and stuck a plaster on an owie.

Katy has never struck me as a particularly entrepreneurial soul.  She arrived in the Street for Chesney's birthday party and immediately agreed to go out with him.  This was despite the fact that she looked like a gymslip Lolita and Chesney looked like... well, Chesney.  No matter how much iron he pumps he always looks like he was put together out of plasticine by Aardman.

After Katy and Chesney had been together for about eighteen seconds, they took the extremely mature decision to have a baby together.  Baby Joseph was born during the school nativity; their choice of name makes me think Katy and Chesney misunderstood the Christmas story.  Normally two teenagers having a child would cause all sorts of tragedies, with their lives sadly devastated by the effort of taking care of a new human being.  Luckily for them Joseph is Weatherfield's equivalent of the Cheshire Cat; he only fades into existence when he's needed.  Most of the time he's... somewhere.  I'm not sure where - a parallel universe?  Brigadoon?  Certainly his parents seem to have better things to do than look after him.

Katy soon got bored of Chesney and turned to Ryan for excitement, which is like abandoning a Big Mac in favour of a Quarter Pounder.  It's all the same really.  Ryan was just a different kind of dull, one with rock hard abs, yes, but even less going on between his ears than an Easter Island statue.  Even a nostril full of cocaine couldn't make him interesting.  Their affair was brief and passionless; it's hard to get properly aroused when you're pressed up against a rotisserie of kebab meat.  It was too much for Chesney though and she left to move into the Windass-Armstrong Tardis across the way.

Since then she's sort of floated around the Street, mainly standing next to Izzy and looking irate when Gary does something stupid.  She's got a job at the gym on reception, a job which she seems to think can be a springboard to literally anything.  It's how Karren Brady started, isn't it, folding up sweaty towels and demanding to see membership cards?  Someone needs to sit Katy down and explain that her terrible career prospects might be down to her dropping out of school to have a baby.  It might actually remind her he exists.

Still, she'll soon be leaving, off to follow whatever her career dream is that week.  I'm hoping the writers really go for broke and give her an absolutely ludicrous job - after all, if Michelle Connor can go from being a barmaid to a top knicker saleswoman and from there to a wedding planner, anything seems possible.  Perhaps Katy could become the new head of the Bank of England?  An astronaut?  One of the Three Tenors?  The world is your oyster, Katy; don't let those opportunities pass you by.

Victims of circumstance

I've made it clear that I hope the Wind-strongs will be rested in the months ahead. We know Owen and Katy are leaving in 2015 and I'm not sorry. While the Pat Phelan storyline had its moments (mainly Phelan and his gob on a stick wife), they have dominated for too long now.

That said, I have found Gary's recent altercation with Roy to be an interesting development. Yes, I know there is only so much Windass angst and misery we can stand, but I think the reactions to Gary's run in with Roy have been illuminating. They have certainly provoked strong debate in our house.

As much as I love Roy and appreciate that he's had a truly dreadful year, there is no excuse for his attack on Gary. That said, I can't really blame him. As well as Hayley's sad demise, Roy's delicate hold on life has been rocked by the persistent, unpleasant bullying from a bunch of thugs. Given his recent troubles, he was in a heightened state of anxiety and that must have played its part when he found Gary in the cafe.

I also feel sympathy for Gary. When you are told often enough that you are rubbish and a complete waste of space, sometimes you can't help but fill that role. He has been put in a desperate position. He has no money, no job, no support from those around him. He has been humiliated and treated like the lowest of the low. While Gary's main problem is controlling his temper, he has been repeatedly goaded by the deeply unpleasant Owen for such a long time now. It is very uncomfortable viewing.

Yes, Gary should not have punched Phelan, but he was just defending his mother. However Owen is wrong to blame Gary for all their misfortunes. It was Owen's greed that brought them to Phelan's door in the first place. Also, the family has ganged up on Gary after they got it into their collective brain cell that he wanted to get back with Izzy. Izzy and particularly Katy (has she not learned anything?) have judged and treated Gary really harshly. At no point did he suggest he wanted to reunite with Izzy, as i frequently scream at my television!

I must also take Anna to task over her treatment of Roy. I do like Anna, the character has developed nicely over the years. I can understand her shock at what Roy has done to Gary and her primary instinct is to defend her son. However, it would also have been appropriate for Anna to at least reference that Gary was at fault in his attempt to rob from the cafe. Anna may soften in her stance towards Roy when she realises how much she needs her job.

i also think it is interesting how Roy's attack on Gary has divided the Corrie community. It is probably true to life that older characters like Norris and Rita would defend Roy's right to defend his property, while younger characters like Sinead struggle to see past the violence of Roy's attack on Gary.

While I often moan that Corrie is too depressing or the drama is too heightened or extreme, I do think the issues raised from this recent storyline are thought provoking and important. As far as the performances are concerned, anything involving David Neilson and Mikey North is bound to be extremely watchable.

As for Owen, I can only hope Pat Phelan makes a return to the street and plays some part in Owen's exit. That would at least make it more interesting.

Some Corrie New Year's Resolutions

I'd like to start by saying I hope all our loyal Coronation Street Blog readers had a wonderful Christmas. I don't know about you but I was left seriously underwhelmed by the festive editions of Corrie this year. They just lacked that traditional Christmas magic.

However, I've decided to start the new year afresh. The run up to new year always leads to many of us making resolutions for the year ahead, setting out our hopes, dreams and aspirations. So here are my Corrie new year resolutions for 2015.

First of all, I must try not to launch into a verbal tirade every time either Liz or Michelle appear on screen and criticise, deride or treat the lovely Steve in an altogether harsh and unfair manner. This will be a tough habit to crack, especially if Michelle is pouting with her arms folded like daggers.

I must give the Nazir family a chance. Even if it is downright preposterous that they have moved into that house in Coronation Street. Even if they have no chemistry as a family and do not work as individual characters.

I must work hard to accept that no matter how much I try I will never, ever like Sophie Webster, the most ungrateful, unpleasant, whinging Christian in the history of prime time television.

I must not cringe every time Andrea appears or jumps onto Lloyd's lap in the cab office. Which is practically every time she appears.

I must live in hope that when Owen and Katy's exits finally come about they will be both short and painless for the viewers. In the meantime, one of my resolutions is to hit the mute button every time either appears on my television set.

I must not scream and shout at each and every one of Corrie's totally rubbish romantic pairings. Nick and Erica sounded like fun but made me shudder. As did Tony and Tracy (make me shudder that is, not sound like fun). And Leanne and Kal don't provoke a strong enough reaction to even warrant a shudder. Can Sean's budding romance with his vicar please not be cringeworthy? Sean seriously needs to grow up, act his age and be seen to have some form of character development.

I resolve not to make a face worthy of a Gogglebox close up every time any of the following things happen: Tracy says something horrible; Dev over-acts; Sharif attempts to act; Michael acts like a wimp; Izzy over-reacts; Maria simpers; Simon is treated like he's five years old when in actual fact he's started to shave; Leanne either frowns or stomps; Nick treats his mother like dirt; David calls his mother "Gail"; Rita plays it all "sweet old lady" or Ken's kimono represents the best attempt at Corrie comedy.

I hope and pray that 2015 will see the Platts and the Wind-strongs rested, allowing other characters to have a look in. Let's hope this new year sees Steph and Luke flourish, Jason and Eva get a proper storyline, Julie get her cheery, 1950s self, perched pertly behind Dev's counter (ahem), Roy find some happiness (not in the form of Mary), Audrey take centre stage in a storyline that does not involve a conman or a cross dresser, Rita make reference to the fact she's still married to Dennis and plenty more of Sally and Tim.

And please, please, please can Deirdre return soon, ready to get stuck into her stuffed marrow once again?

What Katy did (or might do) next

Now then. I've been thinking about Coronation Street, as you do, (don't you? I do!). Now that Katy's decided she hasn't got the stomach to be a paramedic, she doesn't know what her next move will be. I think I've got an idea what it's going to be and I'm going to speculate that Katy will soon be pulling pints behind the bar at the Rovers.

It's not really a stretch. She's young and pretty. She's got a job at the gym but it's probably not that fiscally rewarding. Over at the pub, Steve is absent more than he's there and Michelle and Liz together can't cover all the shifts. Liz replaced Tina with Eva but we know that Catherine Tyldesly is going to be on her maternity leave pretty soon. My money is on a visit to New York to see Stella and they're going to need part time help behind the bar.

Enter Katy. She can work evenings and Chesney can mind Joseph. I don't imagine it will be long term, just until Eva returns because we also know that Georgia May Foote is going to be leaving as well.  It's inevitable, really. Most of the attractive young Weatherfielders in the neighbourhood work at the Rovers. There really isn't anyone else. Sophie might be old enough but she's really not barmaid material, is she, not with her cheerless demeanor.

That's my best guess. What say you?

Owen's ex-wife is cast for Coronation Street

Veteran actor Jacqueline Leonard is going to be joining Coronation Street in February as Owen Armstrong's ex-wife, Linda. Viewers will remember that we've been told  the mum of Katy and Izzy left the family because she couldn't cope but ITV says Owen may have been a bit economical with the truth.

Linda wants to reconnect with her now grown daughters but will they feel the same? It sounds like the Windass/Armstrong family is going to have yet another crisis and we'll have more hand wringing from Anna who is going to be worried about Linda's effect on Owen.

Jacqueline is thrilled to be joining the cast (possibly leading to Ian Puleston-Davies' exit?). Stuart Blackburn says

“Linda's arrival will have a devastating affect on how Owen's family see him and he'll have the fight of his life to hold on to everyone and everything he holds dear. The sins of the father really will visit Owen's children."

I reckon it's not so much of a retcon as it is showing that Owen didn't want to be the bad guy in his daughters' eyes. We know he can be a bit of a brute and has in the past been a bit dodgey with his building business. We will find out why his wife left the children with him and legged it to Portugal and it's going to change their relationship with their father.

Georgia May Foote 'gutted' to be leaving Coronation Street

Georgia May Foote who is leaving Coronation Street as Katy Armstrong,  has revealed she was "a bit gutted" when she found out she was leaving the soap.

Georgia told OK! magazine: "I was a bit gutted that leaving Corrie wasn't my decision - it's like a boyfriend dumping you first - but I'm really excited. If anything, it's given me that kick I needed to move on to other things."

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn said this about Georgia leaving: “Katy will not be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return."

Katy Armstrong's top 5 moments on Coronation Street

Now that we know that Katy Armstrong is leaving Coronation Street, it's made me wonder what she will be remembered for.

Here we go with Katy's top 5 moments on Coronation Street, in reverse order.

No. 5. Um....

No. 4. Er...

No. 3. Snogs Ryan in kebab shop shocker

No. 2. Deflowers Chesney on the soft furnishings

No. 1.  Gives birth in a stable to baby Joseph during the nativity play.

Taxi for Armstrong

So all of a sudden, out of the blue, we hear the news that actress Georgia May Foote is to leave Coronation Street before the end of the year.

While I'll not shed any tears when Katy Armstrong leaves Weatherfield, it does seem a bit odd given that a long-term future for the character was suggested not that long ago.

Young Katy has been one of my least favourite characters for quite some time. While not being quite as surly as the increasingly irritating, dour Sophie or quite as gobby as the increasingly unpleasant Michelle, Katy has been a quiet, background source of annoyance for a while.

The character has been a spare part since her split with Chesney. The arrival of sweet, kindly, soap making Sinead has left Ms Armstrong redundant. Seeing nice but dull Chesney with Sinead makes you realise what a poor match Chesney and Katy were in the first place. To my mind the character was ruined as soon as the pair were saddled with their hasty relationship and parenthood. This aged them overnight and neither character has been able to come back from that abyss of old before their time responsibility.

What made things worse was the further about turn which saw devoted young mum Katy turn trampy overnight with the deeply unsuitable, beige, characterless Ryan Connor. That entire storyline was the ultimate in filler tedium and it was an immense relief when Ryan was packed off somewhere or other for some deeply vacuous, spurious reason. At the time my only complaint was that he didn't take Katy with him.

In recent times Katy has been a background presence in the seemingly never-ending spiral of gloom that is the Armstrong-Windass family. Every so often she would chirrup up to pass on some lame piece of advice to someone who wasn't listening or compliment Valerie "gob on a stick" Phelan on her décolletage.

While I'm a fan of Debbie Rush (Anna) and Mikey North (Gary), the over-abundance of the Armstrong-Windass clan has been quite overpowering of late, so as far as I'm concerned one less is no bad thing. Out of them all, Katy is the easiest to dispense with. Steph has come along with bags of personality and we are soon to meet Kal Nazir's daughter, Alya, so there will be no shortage of younger female characters.

Despite my feelings towards Katy, I do wish Georgia May Foote all the best for the future.

So what do you think about the decision to wave goodbye to Katy Armstrong? Will you miss her? What would you like her exit storyline to be?

Georgia May Foote to leave Coronation Street

Georgia May Foote, who plays Katy Armstrong, is leaving Coronation Street.

The official Coronation Street website at itv.com/corrie states that the actress will depart the cobbles later this year, after producer Stuart Blackburn decided not to renew her contract.

Georgia says: “I have had an amazing four years on Coronation Street. I have had some fantastic storylines and worked with some wonderful actors. I am very excited about what the future holds. While I will be sorry to say goodbye to Weatherfield, I am looking forward to the challenge of new roles.”

“Katy will not be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return,” Stuart Blackburn said, adding “We wish Georgia every success with her future career.”

The Corrie youth of today

Does Coronation Street accurately represent the youth of today? I've commented before that many of Corrie's younger characters seem to be old before their time, while others, like Sophie Webster, never seem to grow up!

Characters like Tyrone, Fiz and Maria are all meant to be in their late twenties/early thirties but all three have had the weight of the world on their shoulders for years! Chesney and Sinead while sweet and kind are also like a couple of young codgers. Do the writers heap too much misery on the young these days?

In years gone by young people were fairly neglected amongst the Weatherfield demographic. In the early years it was all down to Ken, his brother David and Dennis Tanner. The only child was Lucille Hewitt. By the 1990s the production team had caught on to the idea that young people mattered, probably spurred on by the success of youth-oriented hits like Neighbours and the younger casts of rivals Brookside and EastEnders. We saw the arrival of the McDonald twins, more appearances from Tracy-Luv Barlow and later, Fiona Middleton.

In recent times some long time viewers could almost be forgiven for mixing up much of Corrie's present cast with that of Hollyoaks (shudder). Many of the young cast these days seem interchangeable with the other soaps. Katy Armstrong is a good example of this. I just fail to see what value she brings to Coronation Street, although I worry the writers are lining her up to be the next sensation (screen hogger) once Tina McIntyre meets her maker.

I do really like Eva and Jason. I think they are dreadfully underused at present. I'm glad Eva has been kept on after the departure of Gloria and Stella, she is by far the strongest of the three. Jason has matured and developed a great deal over the years and really does deserve a major storyline, unlike his brother Todd who I'd happily see the back of immediately. Sophie and Maddie need to bog off big time although I do think Steph Britton shows promise. She just needs to get away from Tina before her ways rub off on her.

Ah yes, Tina. Overexposed and over-appreciated. Flavour of the month along the same lines as Michelle, Becky and Sean before her. Why must the writers continue along the same destructive path?

They gather information from online forums that a particular character is popular or an actress is capable of flogging magazines and they force them front and centre at every given opportunity. None of the above are unwatchable, but it stretches the patience of even the most loyal viewer to see them feature in storylines that dominate endlessly for months on end.

Anyway, which of the younger Corrie cast are your favourites? And which would you happily see the back of?

Top 50 Corrie Couples - Nos. 34 and 33

34. Chesney Brown and Katy Armstrong, 2010-2013 (40 votes)

They met at Chesney's birthday party and they were attracted to each other. But they soon had to grow up when Katy fell pregnant and gave birth to Joseph in 2011. Despite the struggles of being young parents, Chesney and Katy seemed to accept it and still loved each other. That was until Katy fell for Ryan Connor and his 'young and free' attitude. Katy's adultery led to the break-up of a couple that could've gone on to be one of the most stable in the street.

Should Chesney and Katy reunite or should they lead separate lives? Should they be at 34?

33. Jack and Annie Walker, 1960-1970 (41 votes)

The Walkers were the first double act in Coronation Street, appearing in the very first episode in 1960. What made them popular was their personality clash – Annie with her snobbishness and megalomania and Jack with his broad Lancashire accent and friendly approach. When they were introduced, Jack and Annie had been married for 23 years and had grown up children Billy and Joan.

Being the landlord and landlady of the Rovers Return, the Walkers were at the centre of all the drama on the cobbles. As well as performing the soap’s earliest comic scenes, Jack and Annie also starred in some dramatic storylines that included Frank Turner blackmailing Jack and Annie being kidnapped as well as son Billy popping in and out of their lives, usually in debt. Humorous storylines included Annie accusing Jack of having an affair with Elsie Tanner.

In 1964, Jack and Annie became Lucille Hewitt’s guardians after her father Harry and his wife Concepta left for Ireland and she gave them a new lease of life. The partnership lasted a decade. It ended due to Jack’s untimely death of a heart attack in 1970. After Jack, Annie had some gentlemen friends that included Gerald Prince, Arthur Dewhurst and Arthur Harvey, but none matched up to Jack.

Do you remember them running the Rovers? Were they the best Rovers bosses? Should they be at 33?
