Corrie Comicals week ending 5 June 2020

A camera hidden in plain view next to the Wharfedale system.  On a shelf which Yasmeen meticulously cleaned daily (if not more frequently) and which we all considered was going to be Geoff's undoing.  And how blind are the Socco's?  Surely one of them might have spotted it and asked for the recordings.  However to get rid of this rather annoying plot point Geoff regained access to the house and was able to delete the recordings of the week leading up to the attack.  But it has been there for months - why not delete ALL of the recordings?  They can only assist the defence team if they ever become available.  And the camera has gone to the tip.

I am not entirely sure when this episode was due to be transmitted - probably about three weeks ago.  However I think I can guarantee that whenever Craig becomes a policeman it will not be 22nd of June on any calendar in this house.  Indeed I wonder if it will ever be mentioned again as the episode planned for that date had not been made at shutdown and I believe we will be past that date when the new episodes arrive.

Come Wednesday a new day dawned and as the writer also wrote Friday I suspect that this was originally a one-hour long Friday episode.  John Byrom (29 February 1692 – 26 September 1763) - poor man had no birthday in 1700 as there was no leap year, a poet, inventor of a type of shorthand, landowner and apparently also created the terms "Tweedledee and Tweedledum".  Although I have been told that you cannot believe everything you read on t'internet.  Throughout this episode various people asked after Byron assuming it had been mispronounced!

Imran had sent a text that the cleaners were coming at midday to Adam who wonders why he did not say 12; Imran was concerned that Adam might interpret that as the middle of the night - but Adam says he is not aware that cleaners regularly work in the middle of the night.  But why would want noisy cleaners in an office at midday - there might be clients, there might be phones calls?  Surely before 9 or after 6 to ensure they comply with the physical distancing needed these days?

Teenage life is so unfair, you start a fight so you get your schooling upgraded at vast cost and have to do shifts in the kebab shop because your sister cannot keep her clothes on and to enable Dev to stay solvent.  Yep put like that it really does seem so completely unfair.

On Wednesday Beth and Kirk fell to discussing socks.  Like all of us the mystery sock black hole has turned up in Weatherfield and poor Kirk has been losing socks.  At one point he had it all sorted.  He had socks with the days of the week and he could wear the right socks for the right day so he knew which day of the week it was (and recently we have all struggled with that concept and he is not in lockdown!).  Anyway he ended up wearing one Tuesday sock and one Saturday sock and he did not know which day of the week it was.  He found out he was wearing odd socks on the way to the Weathy County ground, so it must have been a Saturday.  Paul thought about this for a moment and then said that perhaps it was an evening game and therefore might have been a Tuesday; which really left Kirk confused.  Anyway Beth suggested buying all black or all blue socks so they all match up.  Kirk ignored the instructions and bought some blue and some black.  It just won't work will it?

Which just about wraps up the lighter side of the Street for this week.

Corrie Comicals, week ending 7 December 2018

Toyah under the table (entirely sober) started the comedy this week.  Not drunk but hiding from Leanne; only it was not Leanne coming up the stairs to Barlow Legal Services - but Nick.  Which reminds me - why did Pat Phelan plant a camera in the stairwell at Barlow Legal Services and when will someone notice it?  Toyah and Imran are to keep their romance a secret and yet plan to meet in the Rovers.  Can anyone explain how that would work?  As widely pointed out online Imran took delivery of a white coffee in Roy's and then was going to add more almond milk to it.  Very strange.

"Family evening" chez McDonald - is it not breach of contract for Amy to be using her mobile phone?  I have never seen Gilmore Girls - clearly Steve is addicted but neither Tracy nor Amy seem that bothered.  I hope that the contract will be around for a long time but I sense it will soon become a failure as it seems Amy is discovering "boys" - well Aadi anyway!

On Wednesday morning the Battersby duo push their beaus out of the front door and they tell each other that they had boring evenings and both would be going to work as normal, neither yet ready to tell the other.  Then within seconds they both have the delighted looks of the cats who got the cream.  Sadly not in the same single frame - but close.  Later both Nick and Imran end up on the balcony together at which point the deception is over leading to the two of them listening to Leanne and Toyah tearing lumps of each other and their boyfriends - see below!

Well Nick / Leanne and Imran / Toyah are back together.  Imran assures Leanne he is serious about Toyah this time.  Given previous histories I wonder how long Nick and Leanne will last?

As she no doubt intended when she joined Evelyn gets to feature regularly here and this week we see Ty and his Nana just after the departure of Hope (in search of a new set of morals) and Fiz (for arrival of her new baby as reported some weeks ago).  Ty is grateful that she is not going - at least whilst Fiz is away so it could be a while before she departs.  I hope Cerberus returns soon.

The external shots this week all showed the Christmas decorations around the Street and in the Community Garden and for reference I can report that this was exactly as we saw the set dressed when we visited at the end of September so this was recorded about 8 - 9 weeks ago.

My fashion sensibilities are non-existent but I have to ask what Carla thought she was doing wearing this particular creation.  She is answering the phone as her own pa at this point (which raised a smile hereabouts) having sacked Sarah-Louise.  Now I ask you is it wise to sack your partner's sister?

Although we did not get an ensemble event in the factory this week we did have this aside from Carla when asking Beth the new very temporary PA to answer the phone!  "Try not to sound like yourself".

Extra at Work

The new customer wants her first order completed tonight and not tomorrow.  Meanwhile photobombing the take in the bottom left corner is Dirk who really should be considered for the PA job ahead of Beth even if he cannot speak!  Right good with a clipboard though!

Which just about wraps this up for this week.

Writers: Alasdair Morrison (Monday); Julie Jones (Wednesday); Ellen Taylor (Friday)
Directors: Matt Hilton (Monday & Wednesday); Karl Neilson (Friday)

For a special commentary on Mr Hilton's work on Monday evening you should go and read this contribution to the blog.  Similarly come Friday I noted some more cute camera work and the credited director (Karl Neilson) is not a name I recognise - that does not mean he is new to the Street but I have not noticed the name before.  Whilst still Kate Oates is credited as Producer I get the strong feeling that some new directors are having the chance to do things slightly differently.  I wonder if we are on the point of a major step change upwards?

Corrie Comicals Week ending 9 November 2018

Hi everyone.  I am pleased to be able to thank the medical experts at Frimley Park Hospital for looking after me so well during my visit last Friday, for making my stay slightly briefer than expected and for the outcome to be virtually free of pain.  Having watched last week's epsiodes purely as a viewer I am glad I took a week off as there was little humour in Sinead's story, whilst the dirty dealings in underwear are about par for the course between Carla, Nick and Peter.  If anyone can explain how little Nicky Platt can afford to swan around in a swanky car and cough up a fortune to buy a share in factory (presumably with hard cash) I really would like to know.

Turning to Monday much of the first episode was dominated by Nick Tilsley (see above) trying to explain to his employees and Carla why he was once again a part owner of the factory business.  More entertaining were his rolling eyes and grimaces as everyone apart from Gail struggled to understand his motives or even accept that it was a good idea for him to be a part owner of the factory.  Leanne of course was disappointed that a leopard never changes his spots!  Nick assures Leanne that he can handle Carla and shortly after assures Carla that he will talk Leanne around.  Such an optimist!

Gina does not want to give Dev the wrong impression (she seems less worried about giving Tim the wrong idea) so Tim suggests she does her Adele impression.  I know so little about Adele I cannot observe if the impression was good or bad - but it had them laughing.  Dev was over the top as usual later on and it is clear that Dev likes some aspects of Gina but cannot understand her.  It has been said elsewhere that being Dev's partner is akin to the kiss of death especially if your name ends in "a"(Sunita, Maya, Erica).  Gina is right to walk away.

This caused some laughter in our house when Carla went the full Noddy with those red cheeks.  Not sure what went wrong in make up but I bet Ali King was spitting blood when she saw the effect last night!  It was Nick who was off to meet clients.  However Jan McVerry was on good form on Wednesday as these next few clips will demonstrate.

Moira is suggesting to the newly engaged couple that perhaps they could have a competition (like Russian roulette) using a turkey baster to see who gets pregnant first.  They should listen as Moira (as Helen in another universe) has a lot of experience of the turkey baster approach.

For those living overseas you may wonder why Nick was telling Carla it would take over two hours to cover 53 miles shown as the distance between Manchester and Nottingham, according to the sat nav.  Our traffic is very slow but it is not that slow.  It is 53 miles as the crow flies.  However we like sending people by devious routes and my system tells me that it is more like 81 driving miles and over two hours, which given the current state of the motorways in this country is probably far too accurate to be believed.  A recent under 4 hour journey to Manchester to visit the Street took over 6.  I nearly missed dinner!

A picture tells a thousand words so they say.  And I wonder what story those three pairs of eyes (Gemma, Liz and Moira) are telling themselves as an unknowing Imran chats at one of the booths.  Earlier on Wednesday Tim had accused one of Sally's fellow inmates (the "highwaywoman") of undressing him with her eyes.  Imran looks like he is being undressed by three of them at once!

Come Friday I thought it was a little light on the laughter front.  However Amy (supported by the ever devious Adam) having caught her parents attempting to reunite (above) and decided to ensure it was contractual.  Steve and Tracy will not bother to read the contract as they merely want to resume relations and I bet we will all enjoy her penalty clauses some time next week.

You just know your day is going from bad to worse, you know the sort of thing, your distracted secretary gives you completely the wrong file, your annoying little sister plays noisily with a bouncing ball in your office for 7 minutes so you bundle her out and down the stairs and turn round to find the two most recent conquests - the Battersby duo - sitting there watching you.  And do I detect that one of them would still like to be ravishing you on your desk Imran?  He has just about recovered his composure by the time I can get a decent screen shot!

Extras at Work

I felt a little sorry for the lady waiting in the phone queue behind Sally this week so thought that she deserved recognition for standing there without causing any problems and we did not even get to see her face!

Writers: Mark Burt (Monday), Jan McVerry (Wednesday), Sam Holdsworth (Friday)
Directors: Tim Finn (Monday & Wednesday), Nic Phillips (Friday)

Coronation Street are going to introduce Rana’s brother Imran, reveals The Radio Times.

In an interview with Bhavna Limbachia, who plays Rana Nazir in Coronation Street, she tells Radio Times:

"Rana’s family is coming into the show. We saw her mum and dad – Hassan and Saira Habeeb – at her engagement. But she also has an older brother called Imran who’s going to be played by Charlie de Melo.

"He’s the golden child of the family – or so they think!"

Charlie de Melo has previously appeared in EastEnders, Casualty and Doctors and he's on Twitter here.
