Imran DIES In Dramatic Car Crash! Corrie Blog Interviews Charlie De Melo

So there you are - the secret is out! Back at the beginning of May I attended an ITV Coronation Street online press conference and interviewed quite a few of the cast - the big surprise was chatting with Charlie De Melo and learning of Imran’s death. The crash and funeral have been filmed, with nothing leaked to the press, so I hope you are as surprised as I was when I first heard the news!

In this final Corrie blog interview for big soap week, we chat to Charlie De Melo to learn all about Imran’s death, his time on Coronation Street, and his dream exit plot.

Hi Charlie, Imran’s death comes as a massive shock - it doesn't look like he’s injured at all! How does it feel to say goodbye to the character after four and a half years?

It's uncanny and a strange feeling. The final week itself had a lot of effort put into it, a real Corrie team effort - the scale was huge! It felt like an impending burden for me, to get it right, and the fact that it seemed to go well, and for Georgia (Taylor, Toyah Battersby) to be happy with it, meant a lot. Toyah’s next phase follows directly from this, so it was important to get it right

What prompted your decision to leave Coronation Street?

It was a multitude of things. The first few years I did actually find difficult, to be honest, and when I had the option to renew my 2-year contract, I made the decision then that it was a chance to end my time in Manchester and move on to pastures new. A failed experiment maybe, to move and join a job like this, but then covid struck and it was the sensible choice to stay. Imran’s storylines then became rather joyous, working with Millie (Gibson, Kelly Neelan) and Georgia. I then rather enjoyed it but then realised that if I stayed, I could be there forever. With no personal responsibilities, I decided to take a risk. If not now, then when, and maybe never, so I took the plunge. I don't have kids, or a wife, or anything, so without sounding callous, I thought it was the best time to take that risk.

How did you feel when you found out that Imran would be killed off?

On a zoom call with Georgia, just before Christmas of 2021, I was told and we were given a rundown of what was coming up. We wanted a sense of what was going on, and I started to feel quite precious about Imran, and I wanted to do this real justice. We had a chat with Iain (Macleod, Corrie exec producer) and he gave us a real in-depth overview of Imran's internal character and eventual decline. Once the news settled in, I kinda got paranoid about them writing me out, but they assured me that it wasn't an easy decision for them. and Imran's options were limited by this point in the story. It's a new beginning for Georgia Taylor, Sally Carman (Abi), and Micheal Le Vell (Kevin), I think.

Imran has gone on quite the journey on Coronation Street. He was the hero of the hour during Yasmeen’s trial and Geoff’s court scenes. Did you ever imagine that he would go from hero to zero, so quickly?

I doubt I would have pitched it as something I imagined happening, but, that the same impetus he had, in the defence of Yasmeen and Kelly, is the same thing that is driving him now. He is now on a different side to those heroic moments that he once had - it does make sense. It's just the way that the character is being presented that has changed. It shows a different side to Imran.

How has the reaction been on social media and when you're out and about?

Yes, there has been some vitriol to it, but thankfully it was something that I haven't needed to get used to. What I have noticed, and something that I am grateful for is the distinction between fans slating Imran, rather than having a pop at me. I'm not very thick-skinned, and it's been more on a character level, so I am grateful for that.

What have been your highlights from working on the show?

The stuff for the 60th anniversary is a real feather in my cap. I don't watch myself in anything, but I have seen that twice, and it came together really well. It was my first time being involved in something of that magnitude so a real honour. I enjoyed the daft stuff, like when Imran was sleeping with both Toyah and Leanne, and a wine-tasting at the bistro with Peter Gunn (Brian Packham) and making wine puns all the time - the man is so funny. It would be quicker to countdown the days that I didn't enjoy, it's the best place to work. My list of highlights is a long one!

Have you taken any Imran keepsakes away with you?

I've taken a few bits that aren't specific to Imran, I've got a rovers beer mat and a Roys Rolls placeholder. I'm also beneficiary of the costume department having to spread themselves around the building for covid compliance, hence them having no space. They told me I’d be doing them a real favour if I took away all of Imran’s clothes!! I'm also still wearing Imran’s wedding ring, which I haven’t taken off. It's costume jewellery but now it's mine.

Do you have any career plans now for the future?

I am ambitious in my way. I'm ambitious but also directionless. I'm not one of those people that needs to have a career path, as such, have any plans as such. It would be a shorter list of things I don't want to do. Not to be disparaging, but I wouldn't want to do another job in a soap. I wouldn't be working with the same people, such as Georgia, Sally, or Millie. It couldn't match or beat Corrie!

A final question then. Imran never found out the truth about Rana’s death. Would that have been something that you would have liked to have worked on?

Yes, I think so. I’ve said this to Georgia when I told her I was leaving, and I envisaged what Imran’s final scene would be. At some point, Imran finds out about Gary’s responsibility for the factory roof collapse and invites him to the roof, it's raining, Gary climbs up the ladder, they have a scuffle, and Imran falls to his death. It flies in the face of Gary’s redemption though so wouldn't have worked.

Thanks go to Charlie, and we wish him all the best for the future.

One of the many joys of attending Coronation Street online press days (as a superfan, I cannot tell you how lucky I feel) is backstage gossip. Another side of it is if a big storyline is revealed early!! You get to learn about it weeks in advance, hear the cast talk about it all exclusively, and then keep it a secret!

I know spoilers are a polarising emotional seesaw for soap fans, but I love them, and as your superfan Corrie blogger, it has happened to me a few times now. Learning about Luke Britton’s murder, via a poster on the Rovers Return wall (during a private set tour) was the best, and being sworn to secrecy is all part of the parcel! We are embargoed by Corrie press, and as a Corrie blogger, it’s not only a privilege to be privy to it, but, well, I wouldn't want to spoil it, or get in trouble with Corrie hierarchy!! Can you imagine? I bet they'd send in Gary Windass to finish me off! Jokes aside, it's always a pleasure and this press day secret was a card kept close to my chest for nearly a month!

Right from the start of his story arc, Imran was a character of questionable morals. Introduced as Rana's brother, he'd cheated on his wife Sabine and become embroiled in romancing both of the Battersby sisters before settling with Toyah. It was of little surprise that he fathered Abi's illicit child, and his downfall began. Corrie has a long-held history of killing off bad boys, Imran Habeeb follows a long line of them. It's also been a long storyline, following Seb's death, and maybe, just maybe, this is the start of a peaceful time for Abi? I guess Gary Windass can breathe a sigh of relief too? Rana's death remains covered up, so it seems that Gary may be the exception to the bad boy rule? I think about these things far too much, but I wouldn't be a good Corrie blogger if I didn't, eh?

Charlie De Melo interview: Can Imran keep a huge secret from Toyah?

Believing his relationship with Toyah is back on track, Imran Habeeb is about to get the shock of his life. We chatted with Charlie De Melo about Imran’s conscience and a big decision he must make.

“Theirs is the picture of domestic bliss,” Charlie told us of Imran and Toyah. “Everything seems to be going well for them and they’ve been able to move beyond the craziness of 2021; the revelation that not only was [Imran] unfaithful, but also the emotional difficulty they had with Kelly. That put a real strain on their relationship.”

Last year, Imran confessed to Toyah he had a one night stand with an unnamed woman, who the viewers know to be Abi. Months later, Imran believes it is completely in the past with Toyah never needing to know who the mystery woman was.

“At this stage, he thinks he’s gotten away with it. He told [Toyah] enough of the truth to alleviate his own guilt and satisfy his own conscience. He’s been able to tell her enough to take the baggage off his shoulders.

“I don’t think it’s irrelevant, because otherwise he would’ve mentioned it. It was a conscious decision to not say who it was because it does seem like it would be more hurtful being someone you know, within the same community. He feels like he’s said enough.”

Shortly after we, the audience, discovered Abi and Imran’s night together, Abi briefly believed she was pregnant, which panicked Imran. “There were a few scenes when they were trying to come up with a game plan as to what she should do,” Charlie said.

“He was quite clumsily trying to dance around the whole idea of it being her body and her choice, but while also desperately trying to encourage her to make this ‘problem’ go away. He was handling it in a clumsy and inelegant way, and then sort of all of a sudden, that worry does just go.

“There was a scene where [Abi] was kind of speaking in code to Toyah and Imran under the guise of it being related to Kelly, you know: ‘It’s all sorted, we don’t need to worry anymore.’”

After recently getting engaged to Toyah and fostering Elsie, Imran has found himself in a loving and comfortable existence- but in soap land, when the stakes are high, the chances of a secret coming out are even higher.

Charlie said: “The stakes are higher, but at this stage in the proceedings, I don’t think he’s worried about it too much. He’s like: ‘I have my foster daughter who is objectively adorable, I have my partner.’ In his mind, why would he be concerned about a thing when he’s got something so wonderful in front of him?

“Particularly, as far as he’s aware, there are no repercussions, it isn’t a spectre hanging behind him, waiting to strike. It’s gone. He’s already been allowed to forget about it in a way because of his own inability to deal with responsibility when it comes to this sort of stuff, but also because he’s basically been given the all-clear by Abi.

“I think he’s far more selfish than he would let on. I think he presents himself as heroic, and he wants to be seen as heroic, but I don’t think anything he does is selfless, in regards to his white knight syndrome of wanting to protect the innocent and be the one that supplies justice to the street.

“He’s shown that when he has done wrong to the people he professes to love, he does everything he can to avoid responsibility. He will duck away, he’ll hide, he’ll lie. Even with the legendary Rita, he tried to slip one past her. It’s the markings of someone who is self-serving.”

Last week, Abi suddenly went into labour and gave birth, with Toyah becoming her confidant. As Toyah vaguely describes to Imran a client she is helping and explains how she relapsed into drugs and gave birth at 28 weeks, Imran is horrified as the realisation dawns.

“That is the moment where the walls start to close in,” Charlie said. “All of the white noise in his head trying to work this out falls away. That’s the consequences of his actions coming to greet him, finally.

“That’s not something he can hide from or put onto somebody else. This is now his responsibility, and this is something he is going to have to step up and take control of. He can’t lie his way out of it.”

Soon after discovering the birth of the baby, Imran resolves to use his legal position to help Abi fight for custody, but his emotional attachment to his son grows stronger. “In those initial few scenes in the neonatal care unit when he sees his son for the first time and he’s premature, he’s tiny. He’s hooked up to wires, he’s got machines which are helping him breathe and feeding him.

“He sees this little guy that is so helpless and needs help from not just the medical staff, but his family unit. He makes an instinctive, snap decision that this is where I need to be; this is the only thing that matters.

“I think that’s actually a line said out loud where the sacrifices he is now willing to make in terms of the setup he has at home; his career; the love of his life in Toyah; the situation with fostering Elsie which is looking to progress into her being a more permanent fixture in the household.

“All of that, he is willing to risk in order to be present and be there for his son and by extension, Abi, in order to make sure that her previous mistakes aren’t used as a way to keep her away from him as well.”

With Abi delighted that Imran is fighting her corner, Charlie explains how Imran could begin to question Abi’s ability to take care of their son. “There’s every reason to suspect Abi of being problematic as a parent. When she was introduced as a character onto the street, I think her first scene was her being kicked awake by Seb. I think there were used needles all over the place. Both Sally Carmen and the writing team have done an incredible job of giving her an arc that has taken her away from that, but it is still there.

"I think any person that has suffered an addiction would tell you that you never beat it, it's a fight every day, and [Abi]'s had a lot of bad news of late so all it would take is something to make that fight all the harder and as the father in this situation, that would be a huge concern."

Imran’s life is about to be turned upside down, and with Imran’s departure from the street being recently reported, could this be too much for him to recover from?

In My Corrie Feelings - Part 1

Coronation Street has really made me feel my feelings lately, fulfilling my need for a good cry most weeks. The factory collapse and the fallout has been particularly hard hitting.

As I’ve somewhat been able to start having coherent thoughts about the collapse and all that followed, can I just say, bloody hell.

Easily some of the best Corrie I’ve ever seen, and I say that with confidence. I was worried that I wouldn’t feel the full impact of it as I was late to the party and stupidly scrolled through Twitter, but I have never been so wrong.

I don't think I’ve ever cried at anything I’ve seen on TV than when I did watching the collapse episodes. Kate breaking down after learning that Rana wasn’t going to make it, Imran getting Kate inside the imploding factory, their beautiful wedding vows.

My heart was physically breaking and I watched in horror and amazement at this tragedy unfold with a glass of much needed wine and mascara running down my face.

Imran’s reaction to losing his baby sister was haunting. His anger and devastation affecting his life that would never be the same again. As we watched him trash the flat before breaking down on the floor, it was a harrowing microcosm for what has ricocheted around the Street.

The realism of it all was shocking and breathtaking. I take my hat off to every single person involved in creating these episodes; cast; film crew; makeup; set design – absolutely everybody.

Special credit, though, has to go to Bhavna Limbachia, Faye Brookes, and Charlie de Melo in this storyline. Alison King has also been incredible but I’ll get to that more later. I don’t think they’ve had an opportunity quite like this to stretch their acting as far as Corrie’s concerned but they really knocked it out of the park.

It really is something spectacular when you don’t just watch a TV show, but you feel it. It’s the feeling of needing to sit in silence for a good ten minutes after it’s finished, basking in the dismal afterglow of a tragedy you feel you’ve really witnessed.

After all that had happened, we watched as Rana’s loved ones tried to come to terms with her untimely passing and attempt to piece their lives back together.  There was a lot of shouty Imran, but I’ll forgive it. He and Kate made my eyes glisten once again as they watched Rana’s memorial video in the beautifully lit community garden. Can someone pass me a tissue?

This storyline is proof that Corrie is returning to it’s top game, if it’s not there already. It’s not just this however, there’s a few more characters and stories that have had me gripped. Alas, I’ve realised that if I don’t cut this into parts we’ll be here until God knows when. See you for the next part!

Charlie de Melo interview: Imran's future on Coronation Street

How is Imran coping in the aftermath of losing Rana?
He’s completely devastated and the way in which he’s expressing that and dealing with it is by projecting everything outwards in a blind fury. It all seems so senseless and he wants to find out who’s responsible, he’s not satisfied with the idea it was just an accident, that’s not good enough for Imran, this needs to be a problem that he can solve. It needs to be someone’s fault, there needs to be a dragon he can slay rather than just dealing with his grief. It’s a distraction tactic from his grief but it becomes his focus.

Does Imran’s anger affect his relationship with Toyah, is he pushing her away?
He does push back against a lot of her help and support, she’s trying to be measured but it can be difficult if you have a close relationship with someone who occupies a counselling role in their professional life for him to not feel like he’s on the clock, the relationship can feel more like patient and counselor rather than a couple on equal footing and that does cause some friction. It’s a lot to deal with and it becomes the focal point of their relationship but the few times we see Imran really let his guard down it is with Toyah.

Imran and Rana were incredibly close, especially after the problems with their parents and their father’s death, does Imran suddenly feel very alone in the world?
Yes he feels very alone because that was the one relationship in his life that he was always sure of. His marriage didn’t work, he’s had a very strained relationship with his parents, but the one that was a constant was his relationship with Rana and to have that taken out of the equation all of a sudden it does really take a piece of him, she takes a piece of him with her when she goes.

Will we see a very different Imran from now on?
Yes, a relationship that’s been fortified his whole life has taken away in the blink of an eye and the entire dynamic within his family, work and friends is going to be different now.

Imran is determined to find out who can be held accountable for Rana’s death, what are his first thoughts?
His eyes immediately go towards both Nick and Carla in so far as they were in charge of that building and should have known what was going on. They’re negligent at best but as time goes on he takes on a kind of detective role; talking to eyewitnesses, people who worked in the factory, trying to piece the puzzle together

How does Imran react when he overhears Peter urging Roy to ask Wayne to go easy on Carla?
It makes him more suspicious, surely these aren’t the things you should be saying in the middle of a very serious investigation. There are people who seem to be acting in Carla’s interests rather than those who are directly affected and that becomes something of an obsession for Imran. He wants justice to be served and by people going easy on Carla due to her fragile state it seems to Imran like the wrong person is being prioritised here.

Carla suddenly comes clean at Rana’s memorial and admits she knew there was a problem with the roof, how does Imran react to that?
It’s a mixture of vindication and an outward pouring of anger towards Carla and all those who haven’t been listening to him. She may not have known the extent of the damage to the roof but as far as Imran’s concerned she may as well have been holding a bloody knife.

The memorial descends into chaos so later in the week we see Kate holding a second memorial, how does this affect Imran, especially when he hears that Yasmeen is opening up the community centre as a temporary factory for Carla?
To Imran it smacks of people carrying on as if Carla’s admission at the first memorial didn’t happen and that’s like a slap in the face. He feels like he’s being fobbed off, he hasn’t got the answers he needs or the justice he so desperately wanted. Not only that he hears that Yasmeen is going to essentially work with Carla and he suddenly feels does no one else even cares about honouring Rana’s memory and finding out the circumstances surrounding her death. It feels like they’re just paying lip service with the memorial and it’s galling for him but then it also strengthens his resolve to getting answers. Others can return to work and step back into a life with some semblance of reality but Imran doesn’t have that anymore, his one constant has been taken away.

Were you sad to see Bhavna go and are you looking forward to playing a different side to Imran?
Yes to both, I’m very sad that Bhav’s gone, she was the first person I worked with here and we’ve always had a really good working relationship and a familial chemistry that I don’t think comes that easily. We had that sibling bond from day one and it made the difficult scenes much easier to film, it was such a nice thing to come into in a job that was so alien to me. I’m really going to miss that but we are going to see a different Imran now and it’s a real challenge. When we’ve seen him in relationships, commanding a courtroom, expressing his anger those things aren’t too exposing as an actor but showing true devastation you really have to crack open your chest a bit and show what’s underneath to make it ring true. I’ve found it very nerve wracking, I wanted to do a good job and do right by Bhavna and for the ripple effects of Rana’s death to continue. But the scripts have been so well written and Faye, Georgia, Richard and Sally Ann have been so supportive that I’ve been able to open myself up and really explore it. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot which is really great.

Stars of the Week: Leanne & Toyah Battersby

You may have noticed in the title that we’re turning things up a notch this week; I’ve got not just one, but two stars of the week. I bet you’re all as excited as Imran was at the prospect of dating the Battersby sisters at the same time.

On a serious note, I’ve really enjoyed this week’s episodes. Yet again, Corrie have mastered the perfect mix of light hearted comedy and heart breaking scenes. While Sally had me on the verge of tears when she got sent to prison, it was Leanne and Toyah that stole the week for me.

To be fair to Imran, he hasn’t been around long so he doesn’t know one of the main, golden rules of Coronation Street. Don’t mess with a Battersby. Mess with two Battersbys and, well, no one can help you.

As soon as Toyah and Leanne found out they’d been diddling the same man (again), they began exacting their revenge. They somehow convinced Imran that they should make their individual lunchtime meetings more of a group activity. I mean, come on Imran. You’re an intelligent man but other things seem to have clouded your judgement. Hmm.

Leanne and Toyah’s revenge was everything love-rat Imran deserved. They left him a hefty bill at the Bistro before giving him a taste of his own medicine. Kudos to whichever member of the Coronation Street team wrote those lists, they had me creasing. Imran then sacked Leanne (not cool), but Adam managed to get her back, at the cost of Solicitor Habeeb getting on his knees in the cafe and giving a surprisingly thorough apology.

As mentioned before, Imran has now learnt a key rule. Don’t mess with a Battersby.

Who’s your Star of the Week this week?
