The History of Weatherfield's Police Stations

With Coronation Street about to get it's own police station, we're going to take a short look back at the Street's most recent Cop Shops. The oldest one I can find is the 'Weatherfield Central Police' Station.

In real life, this one was located on the Quay Street set, nearby to the fake Rovers Return that was used in the old tours. The Central Police Station was actually an entrance to the Granada building.

When the set moved, we never saw this version again, which explains why they soon began planning to build the new area of the set. But in the meantime Coronation Street was in need of a police station, and they used more than one location for it, unfortunately, I was unable to find out where these the first station was filmed, but thanks to fellow blogger Michael Adams, who pointed out where the second station is located. The second station is actually the former Plant Hill station in Blackley and was used as recently as tonight's episode.

From next month we will begin to see the new Police Station on screen, as it seems the set includes another station right next door to it, it seems likely that this will be an older part of the police station, rather than a separate one all together. It seems that in the context of the show itself, this station will actually be further away from the Street, as there is a gate that hides it away from Victoria Street.

This will be Coronation Street's first purpose built Police Station set,it will be interesting to see what they will be using it for, I hope we see Craig Tinker become a full-time policeman, and maybe get to know a few of his colleagues. I imagine we'll also see a few of the street's residents spending a night in the cells.

Planning permission for set expansion approved

Spotted today on the Trafford Council planning website's page for the Trafford Wharf set, it appears that both ITV applications for Coronation Street's Police Station and the Brewery extension have been approved.

Hopefully construction will start soon, and we'll be seeing the new street in a few months!

There are a few other parts of the planning that are not approved just yet, but hopefully they will be soon.

Coronation Street's new cop shop

Another great guest blog post from Coronation Street fan Rob Coates.

Rob has already written for us on the subjcts of
And now, it's over to Rob...

"One of the things I love most about television is set design. So when my favourite show announces that it will be expanding its exterior set (see the plans here), I'm hooked, wanting to know every last detail.

When Corrie decided to move from Quay Street, I searched Google daily for leaked pictures of the new set. I compared pictures to the old set. I was utterly obsessed. So with news that Weatherfield is getting bigger, I was thrilled.

However, there is one thing that is worrying me... the new Police Station. Will a permanent station mean lots more stories involving the police and crime? I really hope not. I guess my fear is that once the set is built, the writers will be encouraged to use it in their scripts.

As we all know, Corrie does comedy very well and this is the direction I hope it will move in rather than much more crime.

Though, perhaps I have nothing to worry about. Some sets over the years have been such terribly boring places that they either end up changing or disappearing.

The Community Centre barely gets used, which is no bad thing as the place has no soul. And is clearly the size of an old butchers shop.

Back when the kebab shop was D&S Hardware, it barely saw screen time - and the set was as interesting as 'Weatherfield Bus Routes of the 1970s,' a book that I'm sure Roy must own.

Barlow's Buys lasted only a couple of years before it became the much prettier Preston's Petals.

I don't believe we ever saw the interior of the charity shop which occupied the premises where the salon is now, but that's because it sounds utterly boring. We all love Emily, but stories of her working in a second-hand shop were, thankfully, kept to an absolute minimum.

And we've had a GP surgery for many years now, but the writers only seem to use it when it fits the story, rather than write a story that would purposely use the set more often.

So, though a Police Station may feature in the extended set, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be used very often.

Here's hoping."

Pic: Coronation Street's new Police Station plans

Even more plans for Kitchener Street have now surfaced, showing what looks like it could very well be the new Kitchener Street Police Station.

This would be located just behind Victoria Court in reality, in the show. However, I think Kitchener Street will perhaps be located a little further away from the Street itself.

It will be interesting to see how the police station will be used in the show. With Craig Tinker currently doing his police training, maybe we'll be introduced to a few more Corrie coppers?

Coronation Street's Executive Producer Kieran Roberts revealed last week that a new police station would be built on the set as part of the expansion for when Corrie goes to six nights a week.
