There's something about Mary? In praise of Corrie's Mary Cole

In terms of Corrie drama, the past few weeks have proved traumatic for the life of one of Corrie’s most blatant eccentrics; Mary Cole. Aghast at the discovery of Brendan’s long lost love letters, the loss of Dev, Jude, Angie, Baby George, and of course Norris, has left Mary bereft.

The great thing about Mary as a character though, is that she fits in well, in many situations, and with most of the streets residents. In the shop with Dev, the cafĂ© with Roy, propping up the Rovers bar with Tracy or even helping Bethany with her CSA nightmare, Mary is (for want of a better term) an ‘everyman’ amongst the heady mix of the street's residents.

Played with comic timing and true pathos by the superb Patti Clare, Mary has an eloquent grasp of the English language (she’s Roy Cropper’s female equivalent in that regard) and is often full of whimsical eccentric stories of life adventures, brief encounters, school days madness and not forgetting, the regaled stories of Mary’s equally eccentric (we are led to believe) mother. Only ever referred to in parental terms, I wonder what Mary’s mother is really like, would we viewers ever meet her or is she merely mentioned like Streetcars Brenda, and never, ever seen?

Mary however, has rarely been a transient Coronation Street resident and has been embroiled in some great storylines over her past 11 years on the street.

Who remembers the camper van, the story behind Jude’s birth, and Mary’s early incarnation as 'Kathy Bates' kidnapping Norris?

Although initially a competition enthusiast and solely a friend of Norris, Mary initially joined the street in 2008 and began an infatuation with the busybody newsagent. Soon her motor home became parked on the Corrie cobbles as she embarked on installing herself in the life of Norris and eventually alongside other residents.  As a friend of Rita, Emily, and Roy, it wasn't until later years that Mary became more familiar with residents similar to her own age.

After the death of Sunita Alahan in 2013, Mary becomes childminder for street lothario Dev and begins an infatuation with him as well. Although they have shared a hotel room in the past (an innocent drunken encounter), the two have remained great friends and Mary is undoubtedly a surrogate mother to Dev's troublesome twins.

In late 2016 we also discovered that Mary was, in fact, a mother herself. Confiding in Norris, Mary explained that she had an illegitimate son. Tracked down on the internet by Gemma Winter, Mary was soon reunited with Jude, his wife Angie, and Baby son George. With an air of 'Walter Mitty' about him, it was soon apparent that Jude wasn't a successful marine biologist, after all, maybe inheriting his mother's eccentricities but in a rather more unsavoury way. Later marrying Norris for a radio competition quiz, this marriage of convenience was never destined for anything more.

With Norris later leaving the street to visit Emily in Peru, it was left to Mary to look after Dev's kids and become a bit more of a background character, that is until, she developed a wonderful comedy double act with Tracy Barlow, after gaining a job in Preston's Petals. You'd be forgiven for thinking Tracy simply humoured Mary but they appear to share mutual respect, Mary often being a confidante to Tracy, and in recent years, the florists has played host to some of Mary's most humorous scenes. Who can forget Marys impromptu duet with Tracy singing the Elaine Page/Barbara Dickson classic 'I know him so well'?... utterly joyous.

Mary also has a thing for Manchester miserabilist Morrisey and has often been seen quoting his most droll of lyrics, or singing his songs whilst sweeping outside the florist. Morrisey is the idol of idiosyncrasy so its understandable that Mary is a fan - she's also eccentric and undoubtedly a one-off.

Often humorous and wonderfully written, actress Patti Clare can easily deliver pathos, tragedy, and great humour with effortless timing and with real energy. Mary is, for me, a classic example of how a character can grow over the years, developing nuances, familiar behavioural traits, and ultimately be three dimensional and consistently believable.

With recent turmoil, I wonder where the character will go next. I tell you something though.. there is definitely 'something' about Mary.

Episode Review Friday 10 May 2019

Sometimes you feel that the Street has gone down the wrong ginnel and tonight was I fear to say one of those times.  Ryan was stuck between Alya and Bethany - and given that he and the latter have been friends for months can you blame him for looking elsewhere?  A couple of doors down Norris, having  returned earlier in the week, was oscillating between his two partners -  Mary and Freda who have been at daggers drawn for days.  Running two such similar stories on the same day is beyond my comprehension so reporting tonight will be rapid.

TRyangle (nicked without approval from the Conversation Street podcast) continued.  Ryan spent time with both Bethany and Alya on Wednesday but when the former asks what he did he went to bed early with a good book (Ryan can read?).  He checks on Alya who winds him up and threatens to tell Bethany - not that anything happened.  Ali however considers it only right and proper to drop his non-brother in the mess and tells Bethany that Ryan had a date with Alya. Bethany finds Ryan and slaps his face (does nothing to improve his looks).  Ryan accuses Alya of telling tales but Ali immediately comes clean - which of course had Ryan done the same to Bethany might have avoided the subsequent angst.  Ryan later tracks down Bethany in Roy's Rolls and tries to talk to her (above).  As you can see she remains pretty dismissive and who can blame her?  Alya tells him to persevere with Bethany.  And he will be doing more Wednesday gigs.  Alya also tells Bethany that Ryan is cut up about events.

Norris cannot decide which of the above two companions he wants.  Is it his wife?  Is it his betrothed?  Freda has just found out that he thought of settling back down with Mary and is challenging Mary about it.  Mary makes clear that as Norris kept Brendan's letters from him the divorce will happen.  Mary goes to Victoria Gardens and talks to Brendan who has luckily been re-incarnated as a robin and she asks if he found any extra-terrestrial life.  Jan stops by and is completely confused as she tells him she is now dedicated to sharing her life with Brendan the robin.  Meanwhile Freda has thought things through and decides that her relationship with Norris is over (at least no-one slapped Norris' face).

Having made up a story about a missing scarf Paula and Sophie have lunch together and then Paula invites Sophie on the pony trekking holiday, although they will have to share a bedroom.  Then despite a pressing appointment the next we see of them is above as Sally and Tim are rushing to share a shower and they meet Sophie and Paula coming downstairs; presumably having just used the shower although their hair is dry but out of place!  It is all back on between them - and Sophie claims they are taking things slowly - at least for now.

Asha fails to attend an important school test and there is some extensive mystery which will no doubt be resolved over the next couple of weeks.  Initially Asha lies telling Dev she did the test and when challenged she then pulls the "You don't know what is going on in my life" and is stressed out.  Aadi lets slip that she is permanently on Snapchat all evening.  Asha has a second phone apparently.

Tim wins the competition to improve the age of his heart getting it down to 42.  He gets £100 each from Dev and Steve - but it turns out his new power walking outfit cost more than his winnings!

For unexplained reasons Robert dumps a lunch date with Michelle to meet someone in a hotel in town.  He gets himself all smartened up but when he is in the reception area he spots a dirty and dishevelled Carla.  He catches up with her and eventually gets her in the Viaduct Bistro van and brings her back to the Street.  Their conversations are dominated by her comments about the people who are out to get her.  When she gets back to the Street she jumps out of the van and passers-by intervene to keep Robert away from her.  She does a runner and is out of sight crouching by Victoria Court just before the credits roll (above).

I am away for a couple of weeks so I am hoping that by the time I return there will have been a reverse ferret and we will be back on the right Street again!

Corrie Comicals week ending 10 May 2019

Obviously Mary's gurning ability does not go unnoticed so Tracy's comment above was no doubt inserted by Damon Alexis-Rochefort to match Mary's expression above.  Mary is vexed about Freda and the whereabouts of Norris (as indeed have many viewers who were so pleased when he returned to grace our screens this week).

Speaking of Norris he was given a whole series of lines including this one - Mary has restarted her argument with Freda (well you can hardly blame her, neither Norris or Freda has been particularly gentle about pursuing the divorce and indeed announcing their engagement, I thought it was improper to be married to one lady and promised to another).  Above Norris is asking if Mary will be turning her skills to political ends if she has finished with Freda!

Alya has asked when Ryan will finish work - he answers in the modern sense of "never" (above).  She is only worried about this evening - Wednesday evening is student evening at Speed Dahl and he is dj on the decks.

I cannot record an entire scene but I felt I should celebrate this piece of television as Rita fills in new viewers and Freda on Mary's history with Brendan, "The Inexplicable" and falls to reading the letters which Norris had kept from Mary.  And Rita delighting in reading the letters reminds us all of a different world - these days emails, whatapp and Messenger mean that letters simply do not get stored for someone to find; but it was nicely done.

Emma asked Dev if he had any special talents and Dev claims he can do a mean David Bowie.  This cuts no ice with Emma - she responds with a "Who?".  I struggle to believe that a girl of Emma's age might not know the name!

In Victoria Gardens Mary having been informed of the demise of Brendan believes he has been re-incarnated as a robin.  Great acting by Patti Clare and no doubt some clever work by the production team in ensuring that a robin appears in front of her.  So good work all the way round.

Apologies I was not here last week; I was in Cornwall.  And I won't be here for a couple of weeks as I will be in Greece.

Writers: Damon Alexis-Rochefort (Monday); Debbie Oates (Wednesday); Ellen Taylor & Owen Lloyd-Fox (Friday)
Directors:  Neil Alderton (Monday); Abe Juckes (Wednesday & Friday)

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 3 May

Evening Corrie fans it’s Kelly here with your combined review of Friday night’s two episodes.

It’s a day of moving, as Gemma tells a tearful Rita and a perpetually angry Paul that she is moving in with her never-spoken-of-before Mum. As she sits on the park bench waiting for her errant mother Paul arrives and tells her that lots of people love her. She’s determined to go however, saying that Chesney thinks she’s a worthless human being. Meanwhile Imran and Toyah are moving into Kate and Rana’s old flat. Did I miss something here? I know Kate is staying at the Rovers, but I don’t actually remember her moving out? And where is PC Tinker living now. I hope they all had a cast-iron break clause in their rental contract.

Mary has also decided she needs to move her life on by divorcing Norris so that she can be with Eastern Europe’s answer to ZZ Top, Jan. This is a big shock to Moira who can’t believe anyone would choose Mary over her. But not half as big a shock as it is to the man himself who thought he was letting Mary down gently. When he tells Eileen that he made up a story about a dead fiancĂ©e she of course immediately blabs to Moira, because Eileen has all the sensitivity of a blunt axe. Moira delights in breaking the news to Mary who then confronts Jan. She tells him that she ‘has known the duplicity of men before’ (no one does melodrama as well as Mary), and to keep away from her.

In other news Nick and David are skulking around, talking in indecipherable code and mysterious acronyms as they expertly cover up the dodgy money that Shona heard them discussing. Only kidding, they both look as guilty as a six-year-old sitting next to an empty bag of Haribo. No one would ever have Sarah down as brain-of-Britain but even she spots there’s something up and is convinced that Nick is behind the factory roof collapse. I hope him and David never try their hands at poker!

Elsewhere walking white male privilege Geoff is sulking because Yasmeen won’t sack off her work or her hobbies to pay him attention. Tim is far luckier when Sally tells him that an occasional surgery snack is fine, as is plenty of sex. The two ladies are both convinced they are experts in healthy eating, so when Sally claims that all curries are fattening, Yasmeen vows to prove her wrong by inviting her and Tim round for a meal. This scuppers the charmless Geoff’s romantic plans, but since he seems to be mostly in love with himself I’m sure he can just look in the mirror for two hours.

Back at the Street Mary and Tracy see that the door to Number 3 is open. Weatherfield’s answer to Cagney and Lacey burst in to find Emily’s niece Freda inside. She tells Mary that Norris is at a silent retreat in Shepton Mallet and that he agrees to the divorce. When Mary leaves, furious that Norris hasn’t contacted her himself, Freda takes out an urn and places it next to Norris’ picture saying, ‘I’ll miss you every day’. It’s surely not Norris in there? Could it be Emily? Or did Freda once have a beloved pet llama whose ashes she carries around everywhere with her?

Meanwhile Chesney catches up with Gemma, who’s mum never showed up. Rita has told him about the baby, and he thinks they should be a family. She’s not convinced and walks off towards the dodgy looking estate. When he returns home there’s a knock on the door. Gemma has returned but only to tell him that he can be a part of their baby’s life but nothing more. She leaves once more, but only to go as far as the warm couch and embrace of Rita. And seeing Reet not crying anymore suddenly all is right with the world.

I've been Kelly and you can catch more of my pointless mutterings on Twitter @mskelstar.
