Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 22 July 2022

Street residents manage to keep a secret!  The Platt family gather in the Bistro to astound Audrey.  Many hints are dropped and eventually Audrey is escorted under blindfold to her own salon which the family have redecorated and refitted ready for Audrey to re-open once she signs the lease with Debbie.  Yes the family have decided that at age 82, Audrey should go back to work.  Needless to say even though they have phoned Stephen and asked him to come back Audrey appears just a little underwhelmed and frankly who can blame her?  She tells them she is feeling tired and is off to Grasmere Drive for 40 winks but when Gail pops round later there is no sign of her.

Kelly and Gary are apparently free of any retribution from the man she bopped over the head and she gets around to going on that date with Aadi.  You know sometimes it is a little too soon to make a joke over a recent event - well Aadi does when he tries to joke about the abduction and encounter with a rope and a radiator as it might get told to the grandchildren; Kelly is not laughing yet.  Luckily for him Stu can see that Aadi is getting in a stew over his first (and probably last) date with Kelly so Fairy Godfather Stu delivers sweet samosas to lighten the mood and Yasmeen reckons that Kelly is lucky to have him looking after her.

Stu is being an all-round good egg today offering to cover for Zeedan so that the latter can head off to Greece with friends and give Stu an opportunity to reminisce over the time spent in Athens with his daughter (whom we recall is no longer living where he thought she was).  Yasmeen decides that all the good turns deserve recognition and she goes into Voggle search to track and trace the missing daughter, so far without any obvious success.

Jack tells Kev that he needs some help with a presentation and his father agrees to help him at lunchtime.  Come lunchtime Abi is able to announce that she is coming home next week so Kev decides to cook her favourite meal - a chicken curry - and he cannot help Jack who strops off rather than do his work and has a kick around in the back yard.  His ball ends up in Evelyn's lap but she does not ritually disembowel it with a carving knife, but when Jack comes round she hands it back.  Jack is rather glad as he tells Ruby that he is not Evelyn's grandson and in a scene we do not see I rather think he explains that Molly, then Ty's wife', was his mother.

The many headed hydra of the annulment document  keeps appearing.  Initially Phill reminds Fiz (who only has one z) that today is the last day of the two weeks and has decided they should go for couple counselling as his last attempt at trying to patch things up.  Amazingly the only counsellor available in Weatherfield is the one which Ty and Fiz have been seeing.  She suggests Fiz might have some secret that she wants to tell Phill but Fiz gently steers the conversation elsewhere.  Phill repairs to the Rovers where Evelyn disposes some wise words of advice and Phill might sign the document; except that he realises he has left his phone in the counsellor's office.  He finds Fiz and Ty there and the annulment is annulled.

After a bit of a shout Phill goes back to the Street and sits down with Evelyn who once again points out that he has a lot going for him and he will find a decent partner and suggests he has a chance to say good bye to Hope and Ruby.  Hope obviously feels that the need not to tell the entire truth has gone and informs Phill of where Fiz spent her wedding night.  Phill storms along to the Rovers where he finds Ty and Fiz announcing their re-union and tears up the annulment, throws it up in the air and tells them they are going to have to wait 12 months until he can sue Fiz for a divorce.

Getting home, Gail phones Audrey who re-assures her that she had simply popped out for some milk and to stop fussing.  The camera tells a different story - not of Audrey at home but in a bed in A&E being questioned by a medic who seems to believe that she had ingested an excess number of sleeping pills and wants her to see a psychiatric liaison officer on the morrow.

Poor Phill had his chain yanked in so many directions tonight that it all seemed a little unfair.  The man has done nothing wrong really; Fiz may yet come to regret taking Ty back and wait until the children decide to use their new knowledge to their advantage.  Audrey has not been happy for ages and with that family I can see her wanting to go to Switzerland sooner rather than later.  Kev you need to keep your promises to Jack or it will all go pear-shaped.  Yasmeen - be careful - Stu's daughter may not want to be found.

Tonight was written by David Isaac and Chris Fewtrell, whilst it was directed by Penelope Shales-Slyne.

Fiz Finds Out Phill's Secret? Corrie Blog Chats to Jennie McAlpine

In last night's episode, Fiz was left reeling having discovered Phill is friends with Graham, the prosecution solicitor who presided over her criminal trial following John Snape’s murder spree. Fiz confided in Tyrone, telling him how she’s never told Phill about her crazy ex-husband, as she doesn't want to scare him away. It then transpired that Phill actually knows all about John Snape, and would never think badly of her.

However, we will soon find out that Phill is hiding secrets too!

On the 5th of May, we attended a Coronation Street Press Day, and the Corrie media gang promised us that there is still a lot more to come in this long-standing love triangle between Phill, Fiz, and Tyrone. John's daughter Hope wreaks havoc with a digger, Tyrone digs for the truth, and Fiz contemplates a marriage proposal! In our latest Corrie cast interview, we spoke to Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz Brown, to learn all about it!

Hi Jennie! All seems to be going well for Fiz and Phill until the spectre of John Snape comes back into Fiz’s orbit. How does Fiz feel when she meets Phill’s posh friends for dinner, only to discover that Graham was a prosecution solicitor on John Snape’s murder case?

Well, she's dead nervous about this dinner, meeting Phill’s posh friends. She doesn't know what to wear, Sean tells her to put some more make-up on - so she’s in a right state, anyway. Then she gets this huge bolt-from-the-blue in the form of John Snape when he’s mentioned, and he becomes the whole content of conversation over dinner

Phill doesn't know anything about Fiz’s past, even though he’s supportive of her, and the girls, and seems to be an absolute gentleman. This week we find out that Phill is also hiding something, and Hope is the first to find out his secret. What does Hope do to Phill?

First of all, Hope gets hold of a giant digger and smashes it into Phill’s car. We all know that you don't mess with Fiz’s daughter! It’s quite tame for her really, and she could have been a whole lot worse, actually. Fiz is then really angry and distressed. For some reason, Hope finds out that Phill has a whole load of info about John Snape, and subsequently learns a whole load of things about her Dad, that she didn't want to know

How does Phill react to the attack on his car? He is mature about it and just concentrates on trying to smooth things over with Fiz. He has a whole lot more to worry about!!

How does Fiz feel when she finds out the truth about Phill. Will it change her perception of him?

Yes, the shine is knocked off when reality hits home, but she still likes him and wants to cling to the idea of them. She doesn't want to be on her own, nor leave the posh home they share, having thought he was ‘the one’ for her.

We all know that Tyrone is hoping to get back together with Fiz. Do you think she could go running back into his arms?

Would Fiz go back to him? Yes, she would, but it would be the Tyrone that didn't run off with Alina, nor break her heart. It's just that she can't get over what he did, and tearing the family apart.

Does she have genuine feelings for Phil? I think she does, but she's putting the family first, and the girls first ahead of her feelings. It's a new start away from Weatherfield and Phill can give her all the things that Tyrone can't. He has no baggage (that she knows of), no kids, and seems stable...

Phill and Fiz end up on shaky ground this week, and then Phill proposes marriage. Is this something that Fiz wants?

I think this is the thing, Phill is romantic and kind to her, all of the things that Tyrone wasn't, he’s really sweet. There’s a line in the script where Phill lists all of the things that he loves about their relationship and it's the same things that Tyrone said he hated about their relationship before he left her for Alina. It reminds her of that original conversation but the outcome is completely different. I think she gets swept away by Phill’s romance

Would you like to see Fiz marry Phill?

Well, if you remember my last on-screen wedding, it was in a prison with only Chesney and prison guards as guests, so it may be nice to have a white wedding. However, Evelyn points out to Fiz that if she does get married, she can't wear white, and Fiz disagrees, so we shall see!

                                                                    ***

What is Phill hiding? Does Hope take this vendetta further? and will Tyrone stand aside to let Fiz get married? This press day was part of a big set of storylines coming up, so keep your eye on the Coronation Street blog for upcoming spoilers, backstage gossip, and more cast interviews!

Festive Fisticuffs For Fiz’s affections? Corrie Blog Chats To Alan Halsall & Jamie Kenna, as Phill & Tyrone Fight on Christmas Day!

With Mimi off the scene, and Phill moving out of Number 9, you could be forgiven for thinking the wheels were in motion for Tyrone’s return to the heart of his family (and Fiz's heart) for Christmas? Wrong! In what promises to be a comedic battle for her flame-haired affections, Coronation Street Blog spoke to Alan Halsall (Tyrone) and the (surprisingly cockney) new boy Jamie Kenna (Phill) to learn all about this Christmas Day funny fracas!

Hi Jamie, The relationship will Fiz has gone well so far, but Mimi has soured the nest a bit?

Yes and No. Does it beg the question of whether that has happened in previous relationships? He loves Fiz, really into her, and I think this is the wake-up call to temper that relationship with Mimi. He needs to cut the apron strings a little bit.

How did you land the role of Phill on Coronation Street?

I auditioned for a different part a few years ago. It was a close call, between me, and the guy who eventually got the job. The feedback was good, but you hear that all the time and I disregarded it. Years later, my agent put me up for the part of Phill (six or seven episodes) and offered it straight away. So, I auditioned for this part a few years ago now. And, when mentioning my accent (Jamie is from London) they were unsure whether I would be cockney or do my northern accent. I just got offered the part (without auditioning) and they weren't sure, so they had to call upstairs and decide on it. Getting the job, I mean, it’s Coronation Street, it’s iconic! I've been acting for 22 years now, but to step on the cobbles on that set, is very special! I always remember a scene when Ken Barlow punched Mike Baldwin, that stuck with me, and now I’m on the show. Incredible!

Talking about Corrie love rivals, like Ken and Mike, Alan (Tyrone Dobbs) has joined us for the interview! In the run-up to Christmas, the battle between Phill and Tyrone is now warming up.

Alan, would you say Tyrone has now realised what he’s been missing and wants Fiz back?

I would say that Ty has realised and in the hardest way possible. He thought the grass was greener with Alina, all in his own making, and every time he looks across Coronation Street, he sees the kids and Fiz and realises just what he's missing. He wants Fiz back, but has this very tall stumbling block in the way!

Jamie, do you think Phill is aware of the fight on his hands? Or is he not that concerned at the minute?

At this stage, I don’t think he’s aware, having not witnessed anything directly of Tyrone’s real feelings. He's aware of some animosity, it’s a bit awkward, and that he wants to offer an olive branch. Phill is not quite aware of the full extent of Tyrone’s regret, nor the battle that he faces at Christmas!

Phill has booked a winter log cabin for Fiz and the girls. How does he feel when Fiz tells him she can’t go? Does this set the tone for Christmas Day? Maybe he’s now not in the best of moods?

That's an interesting one. He had it all planned out, he took Tyrone out for a cup of tea and got his permission. He was looking forward to it, and he has taken a shine to the girls, but he’s a nice guy and tries to put a positive spin on it. He is disappointed.

Alan, when Fiz and the girls turn up on Christmas day, does this put Tyrone in high spirits?

Not at the beginning of the day, no, he’s planning discount fish cakes with his Nanna! It’s hardly the greatest of Christmases, his family are away, and he's having to listen to Evelyn telling him it’s all his fault. So when he opens the door and sees his girls there, it makes his Christmas.

What makes Tyrone try and kiss Fiz? Is it the Christmas alcohol, festive reminiscing, or does he just misjudge it, and think that Fiz would reciprocate?

I think it’s a mixture of all of those things! They’ve had some Christmas drinks, he feels settled being back at number 9, and he thinks Fiz has come back because of him. Tyrone is very capable of misreading things! He misreads it, and Fiz puts him straight.

Jamie, How does Phill feel when he finds out about the kiss?

He’s not happy! I think it’s the first time you will see another side of Phill. He's a nice guy but can only be pushed so far. He’s not happy when he finds out. I don’t want to say too much but it’s certainly a tipping point!

Alan, things soon descend into a typical Corrie Christmas. What can we expect to watch?

Rather than it being a typical fight between them and using fists, they use things lying around the house like Christmas decorations etc. Phill uses his six-foot height to his advantage. It was soo much fun, inflatables, marigolds, and we hope it will put a smile on peoples faces at Christmas. We couldn't waste this opportunity. We get on so well in real life - a real bromance!

Thanks to Jamie and Alan for a brilliant zoom session.

Corrie Festive Fun For Fiz? Jennie McAlpine Chats To Coronation Street Blog

Fiz is heading for Christmas, hopeful of having a happy one with Phill and the girls. This week she reaches the end of her patience with Mimi and asks Phill to move out of Number 9! How will Christmas pan out for Fiz? Will Fiz stay with Phill, or will she fall for Tyrone all over again? Coronation Street blog put on a Christmas Jumper, downed a mince pie, and joined ZOOM to chat to actress Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz Brown, to learn all about it!

Hi Jennie! What a year Fiz has had on the street! Can you some up everything she's been through, and what is Fiz hoping for this Christmas?

It has been an unpredictable year! We were very surprised when the writers split Fiz and Tyrone up - a bolt out of the blue! It’s been a surprising year and one where Fiz has tried to get used to a new way of life. She wants peace this Christmas I think, and some babysitting from Evelyn!

That’s not what she’s going to get though is it?

No, not what she expected, as with things between Phill and Tyrone. When it's suggested that Phill had booked a log cabin for them, well, she's had never been treated like that. It’s INSTAworthy (it says in the script), it's how other people live, and that is what Phill means to her. But the reality is that the girls want to stay at home with their Dad and Evelyn.

Soon, we will see Tyrone make it clear that he still has feelings for Fiz. Do you think she still loves Tyrone or has she moved on?

Well, this is a thing, I think she is trying to move on with Phill. My answer is: she would have loved for Tyrone to have not done what he did, ultimately tearing the family apart. She's not interested in the Tyrone that exists now- she wants the one from before, one that wouldn't leave her for Alina. However, she was there for him when Kirsty died and Alina left. They have all of that history. Her heart knows it is with him, but it’s difficult for her. Phill is giving her things that Tyrone never gave her.

We have seen a rivalry between Phill and Tyrone, but they remain on good terms. However, things change drastically on Christmas Day. Can you tell us what happens?

Tyrone does not handle Christmas Day very well. He starts the day quite miserable, with his nanna and they are planning to have some half-price fishcakes from Devs. It’s not the Christmas he was planning! Then, Fiz, the girls, and Phill turn up, then Phill disappears to his Mother. There’s also a pigeon that’s involved, an injured pigeon, and Tyrone gets a bit drunk, misconstruing a potential rekindle with Fiz, it all goes wrong. And then, it ends with Fiz and Evelyn rolling their eyes at Phill and Tyrone arguing, and unless the directors have cut it, it involves a pink inflatable unicorn!

Has Fiz had enough from both of them?

Yes she’s had enough and all the girls have, but it ends pretty gorgeously. I don’t know how we filmed it in the pandemic two-metre filming kind of time, but there’s a gorgeous ending - for us and the viewers. An altogether moment!

Tyrone lays his cards on the table, but Phill then asks her about the girls calling him ‘stepdad’ and maybe buying a house together! Is this a surprise for Fiz?

Yes, they’ve (Phill and Fiz) have some sort of argument but are then friends again. She says ‘don’t worry about the girls, you don’t have to be their stepdad’ but he says he’d like to be. I think she’s flattered but then realises it’s going fast

Who do you (Jennie) think that Fiz should be with?

I think, possibly, she could have had a bit of time on her own and been with no one! But here we are. She could have gone down the ‘girl power’ route and looked after the girls with Evelyn, but rather than be on her own, Fiz got with Phill. I understand that people do that but, she could have had some time on her own. Choosing between the two, it would possibly be Tyrone. Maybe they could have Phill as a lodger?!!

Going into the New Year, it looks like things won't be any quieter for Fiz?

Well, I don't think so, no. Hope is just bubbling/simmering under the surface! I don’t know why Phill would say he’d like to be a stepdad to the two girls - both a nightmare! And *spoiler alert* I'm pretty sure we filmed some scenes in the back of a police car for New Year, too

Thanks, Jennie!

                                                                ***

Are Fiz and Ty to be reunited at Christmas? Can we guess anything from that interview? Aside from some comedic Corrie on Christmas Day (inflatable unicorn, anyone?) I guess this soap love triangle will carry on into the New Year!
