Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 14 March 2025

Evelyn is back on t'Street walking from the tram stop towards Ty's but missing daughter Cassie tucked up in sleeping bag in the ginnel opposite Speed Dahl.  Ken has gone on a break in the Lake District and he will be joined by Steve and Amy this evening but he has phoned Evelyn and given her an update and asked her to ensure that Cassie is safe and warm as he is remains concerned about her.  So she asks Ty nicely - but he is not going to bend even slightly.  Evelyn has a new haircut and new glasses.

Steve is in the cab office where Tracy wants some small talk and Steve asks after Tommy O - Tracy admits that Tommy loves football more than her so it is over.  She is surprised to hear that Ken has headed to the Lakes to clear his head with Keats and Wordsworth.  A little later she spots a dishevelled Cassie and even from a distance she can smell a sewer rat.  Tracy goes to the police station but PC Tinker is able to confirm that in the absence of a statement from Ken they will not be arresting Cassie much to Tracy's displeasure.

Lou and Mick have reconciled as they always do and are demonstrating that in Roy's Rolls in front of Daisy who reckons that Mick is a caveman.  In the Rovers a little later Mick wants a beer - and after some pressure asks more politely.   Daisy reminds him that he was contemplating cheating on Lou without a second thought and it was a good thing Daisy came to her senses.  Mick starts arguing with Daisy and Jenny appears and says that given his behaviour he can leave now.  He calls the ladies the doo-lally duo.  But he goes.   Daisy assures Jenny she could handle it - but Jenny says that they are always better as a team - Daisy is not so sure.  Jenny says to Rita that Daisy is headstrong and Rita asks if that reminds Jenny of anyone.  Rita assures Jenny that Daisy will forgive her, eventually.  Rita suggests Jenny back off for a bit.

Sarah is starting to feel that David, Shona and Lily (who is allegedly untidy) have outstayed their welcome and David senses his sister's disquiet - especially as David cannot do the ironing with his left arm broken.  He therefore asks Audrey if they can move into Grasmere Drive now that Harvey is no longer chasing them.  Audrey says she will think about it.  Later in the Bistro Audrey discusses it with Rita.  Gail is apparently having the time of her life Audrey reports.  Evelyn joins them and catches up on her alcohol deficit quickly.  Audrey has decided that she will help David as much as possible now that he has come to realise what is important.

Dee Dee is now very pregnant as we have not seen her for weeks and the pregnancy is progressing well.  She has to remind Ed that she will be arranging for the baby to be adopted once born - which Ed is having trouble accepting.  Dee Dee is not even sure she will hold the baby once born.  Dee Dee talks it over with Bernie - Ed holds out some slight hope that a baby might bring Aggie back into the family.  Bernie knows that Dee Dee has the baby's best interests at heart.  Bernie talks about giving up Kit but recalls that she knew she could not provide the care the baby needed.  As with Kit somewhere there is an amazing parent waiting to do the same for Dee Dee's baby.  Later Ed resolves that he cannot let Dee Dee go through with her decision.  Ed phones someone (not Michael as he is on holiday with Glory) and asks him / her to get to Weatherfield as soon.

Debbie is putting rubbish in the bin in the ginnel when we hear Tracy sounding like she is buying drugs from a dealer at the other end of the ginnel.  Tracy spots Debbie as she turns to go in.  Later Tracy invites Cassie in the back door of Number One as she wants to thrash out their problem.  Tracy has made lunch - leek and potato soup!  Cassie waits until Tracy has tasted it to ensure that it is not poisoned.  Banoffee pie for afters.  Cassie admits to missing Ken as he is good company.  Amy apparently calls him "Grandad Google".  Oddly despite her thieving Cassie also demonstrates to Tracy that she does actually care about Ken - his back, his pills and well being.  Eventually Tracy comes to the point.  She offers Cassie a wrapper of drugs and pushes it over the table to her.  Cassie cannot help herself and puts it in her pocket.

Mick and Lou return to the Rovers and he remembers to say please when ordering the drinks.  Mick cannot let it lie and raises the subject of events yesterday.  Daisy calls to Lou and advises her that they kicked Mick out of the pub earlier in the day, explaining that he had come onto Daisy yesterday.   Mick denies it.  Unusually for Corrie Lou believes her husband and makes to attack Daisy who shuts the bar counter,  Lou is in fighting mood until Jenny confirms Daisy's story indicating that Jenny thought they would need to throw a bucket of water over Mick.  He feigns ignorance.  Jenny tells them both to get out now.  Both leave by the back door (to go to the ginnel and their back door in case anyone wants to know why they do not leave by the front door).  Later Jenny and Daisy talk in the back and both effectively apologise for their behaviour.  Daisy admits she is not coping well.  Now more relaxed Jenny asks if she has talked properly to Daniel.  Jenny says they are crazy about each other and Jenny is trying to save themselves a lifetime of misery.   She says Daisy and Daniel are like Kermit and Miss Piggy - they are meant to be together.  She tells Daisy to fight for it.

Audrey gets Sarah and David to sit down.  She has decided to sell Grasmere Drive to provide the money to rebuild number eight.  It will be David's inheritance when she dies.  And there will be more money than enough.  Audrey will downsize.  Sarah is not in favour of this solution.  Later in the Bistro however David agrees to the deal and then Audrey delivers the killer blow - stairs are getting a challenge so she will move into the annex of number eight and David can move upstairs.

Evelyn finally finds Cassie in Victoria Gardens and takes her back to the Dobbs residence to see if the damage can be repaired.  Evelyn does not deliver a big lecture - it would not achieve much.  She does say that nobody throws her daughter on the street even if she deserves it.    However neither Tyrone or Fiz is in forgiving mood.  Tyrone is not willing to listen - even though Ken does not want Cassie sleeping rough.  Ty particularly does not want Cassie around the girls.  Cassie accepts his refusal and leaves.  Evelyn follows her but Cassie knows that Ty is right and she is a disgrace of a human being.  Cassie tells Evelyn to trot off back to University and pretend that her daughter never existed.  Evelyn gives Cassie money for a hotel for the night - which Cassie eventually takes.  Back at Victoria  Gardens  she is going through the bin where she threw the wrap of drugs from Tracy when PC Tinker interrupts her.  She claims she was looking for a tram ticket.

For the second time recently Debbie has no knowledge of what the other person is talking about - in this case Tracy trying to explain a drug deal was not a drug deal.  Debbie is insistent she knows nothing - which suits Tracy's agenda perfectly.  Debbie says her eyesight is not that good and it gets passed off.

Daisy arrives at Daniel's flat with a bottle with the intention of getting drunk.   Daniel invites her in and she apologises.  Daniel asks if they are getting back together and she uses a double negative and a split infinitive which Daniel is not sure he can forgive.  They soon kiss and make up.

Tracy tells Steve over a microwaved meal that she is thinking of moving back in (well Tommy has ended the tenancy).  She says she wants to make sure that Cassie does not worm her way back in.  Tracy later overhears Cassie on the phone to someone who will deliver something she really needs in the morning as there is no stock this evening.  Tracy is convinced that her offer of drugs has worked and that Cassie will soon be gone completely.

Only one brief visit to the police station and none to the hospital - things are looking up.  And a multitude of stories and even some humour.  At this rate we might soon have a programme worth watching all over again.  Although there is a long way to go.  Much better than some I have watched recently.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 22 July 2022

Street residents manage to keep a secret!  The Platt family gather in the Bistro to astound Audrey.  Many hints are dropped and eventually Audrey is escorted under blindfold to her own salon which the family have redecorated and refitted ready for Audrey to re-open once she signs the lease with Debbie.  Yes the family have decided that at age 82, Audrey should go back to work.  Needless to say even though they have phoned Stephen and asked him to come back Audrey appears just a little underwhelmed and frankly who can blame her?  She tells them she is feeling tired and is off to Grasmere Drive for 40 winks but when Gail pops round later there is no sign of her.

Kelly and Gary are apparently free of any retribution from the man she bopped over the head and she gets around to going on that date with Aadi.  You know sometimes it is a little too soon to make a joke over a recent event - well Aadi does when he tries to joke about the abduction and encounter with a rope and a radiator as it might get told to the grandchildren; Kelly is not laughing yet.  Luckily for him Stu can see that Aadi is getting in a stew over his first (and probably last) date with Kelly so Fairy Godfather Stu delivers sweet samosas to lighten the mood and Yasmeen reckons that Kelly is lucky to have him looking after her.

Stu is being an all-round good egg today offering to cover for Zeedan so that the latter can head off to Greece with friends and give Stu an opportunity to reminisce over the time spent in Athens with his daughter (whom we recall is no longer living where he thought she was).  Yasmeen decides that all the good turns deserve recognition and she goes into Voggle search to track and trace the missing daughter, so far without any obvious success.

Jack tells Kev that he needs some help with a presentation and his father agrees to help him at lunchtime.  Come lunchtime Abi is able to announce that she is coming home next week so Kev decides to cook her favourite meal - a chicken curry - and he cannot help Jack who strops off rather than do his work and has a kick around in the back yard.  His ball ends up in Evelyn's lap but she does not ritually disembowel it with a carving knife, but when Jack comes round she hands it back.  Jack is rather glad as he tells Ruby that he is not Evelyn's grandson and in a scene we do not see I rather think he explains that Molly, then Ty's wife', was his mother.

The many headed hydra of the annulment document  keeps appearing.  Initially Phill reminds Fiz (who only has one z) that today is the last day of the two weeks and has decided they should go for couple counselling as his last attempt at trying to patch things up.  Amazingly the only counsellor available in Weatherfield is the one which Ty and Fiz have been seeing.  She suggests Fiz might have some secret that she wants to tell Phill but Fiz gently steers the conversation elsewhere.  Phill repairs to the Rovers where Evelyn disposes some wise words of advice and Phill might sign the document; except that he realises he has left his phone in the counsellor's office.  He finds Fiz and Ty there and the annulment is annulled.

After a bit of a shout Phill goes back to the Street and sits down with Evelyn who once again points out that he has a lot going for him and he will find a decent partner and suggests he has a chance to say good bye to Hope and Ruby.  Hope obviously feels that the need not to tell the entire truth has gone and informs Phill of where Fiz spent her wedding night.  Phill storms along to the Rovers where he finds Ty and Fiz announcing their re-union and tears up the annulment, throws it up in the air and tells them they are going to have to wait 12 months until he can sue Fiz for a divorce.

Getting home, Gail phones Audrey who re-assures her that she had simply popped out for some milk and to stop fussing.  The camera tells a different story - not of Audrey at home but in a bed in A&E being questioned by a medic who seems to believe that she had ingested an excess number of sleeping pills and wants her to see a psychiatric liaison officer on the morrow.

Poor Phill had his chain yanked in so many directions tonight that it all seemed a little unfair.  The man has done nothing wrong really; Fiz may yet come to regret taking Ty back and wait until the children decide to use their new knowledge to their advantage.  Audrey has not been happy for ages and with that family I can see her wanting to go to Switzerland sooner rather than later.  Kev you need to keep your promises to Jack or it will all go pear-shaped.  Yasmeen - be careful - Stu's daughter may not want to be found.

Tonight was written by David Isaac and Chris Fewtrell, whilst it was directed by Penelope Shales-Slyne.

Coronation Street Season Finale

Imagine this. It’s every Corrie fan’s worst nightmare. Amidst the excitement of the 60th anniversary, special programming in the run-up to the big day, cast interviews, parties on the set and an avalanche of special blogs from us Superfans, a big announcement is made.

December 9th 2020 will be Coronation Street’s final every episode.

Nightmare.

But not unexpected.

The Coronavirus, which subsided during the summer months, has returned with a vengeance. Public transport is shut down, Parliament is in recess, schools are closed and the infection rate is still rocketing. All people want to do is self-isolate and watch Corrie.

STOP READING NOW, AUD

But that’s not the worst of it. 2020 started with hyped-up warnings of World War Three over tensions between Iran and the US. And although fragile peace agreements in Syria and Iraq are holding, the refugee crisis hitting Europe is causing economic turmoil and governments around the world are at odds over how to deal with the problem.

WEATHERFIELD 2021
A recently re-elected Donald Trump has taken Virgin Galactic’s first commercial flight to the Moon and decided to stay on account of it being “the Greatest Moon ever”.

Iran’s supreme leader has succumbed to the Covid-19 and the country is accusing the Americans of creating it in an act of chemical warfare. Meanwhile Kim Jong Un is threatening to nuke Japan from his mountain bunker, where he sits out the pandemic like a James Bond baddie, watching North Korea’s most popular TV soap – Kimmynation Street from his lair whilst binging on cheese and Pepsi.

The British military is put on war footing and rationing and stockpiling have begun in case the unimaginable happens.

ITV closes its studios in Salford and TV now mainly consists of news bulletins, government alerts and repeats of You’ve Been Framed (the Lisa Riley Years).

Coronation Street, which has already ceased filming, has seen the departure of many of its characters, particularly the younger ones. But the storylines yet to play out reflect the state of the country in real life. The whole Platt family moved to Italy after Audrey died of Coronavirus back in September. Craig, Gary, Ali and Ryan all went off to join the military. Bet Lynch retuned, moving into the Rovers where she now remains, bedridden, smoking fifty cigarettes a day, waiting to take her final breath in the place she loves so much. The Connors all fled to Ireland where the virus has been successfully eradicated. Claudia ran off with an American army general so Ken sold the retirement flat and moved back to Number One, where the whole family now live, rather uncomfortably.

BROWN SAUCE & THE APOCALYPSE
Rita still makes her daily trip from the flat to the Rovers to drink bucketfuls of gin and reminisce over the last war. She sits every evening with the remaining Coronation Street residents and sings to them underneath the Union Jack which has been hung from the Rovers ceiling. Rita, Bet, Ken and others, keeping one another's spirits up in a kind of self-imposed red-brick quarantine.

DE-COBBLED WASTELASND
So Wednesday 9th December, Coronation Street’s sixtieth birthday, arrives. That famous theme tune plays in households across the country. Comfortingly familiar in an uncertain world.

The episode starts and we’ve seen the first scene play out before. Children playing on the cobbles. A corner shop, it’s lights glow in the dark, poorly-lit street. We enter the shop. Dev is packing things into a box. He's shipping out. An unknown character is arranging jars into neat rows on a shelf.

“It’ll be funny having my name over my own shop” the newcomer says.

***
Corrie will obviously outlive us all. But I wonder what story the final episode will tell when it does come. Most finales are disappointing and leave too many loose ends unresolved to satisfy every viewer (I’m still furious at how Star Trek Voyager ended).

We’ve seen in life and world events that history does repeat itself. I can imagine Corrie ending just as it started in 1960. An unremarkable working class back street that has seen many people come and go, but on the whole has stayed starkly the same. The same worries and struggles, the same ways of pulling together and getting through hard times as they had decades ago. The same three meals a day, same unfulfilling job, the same pint in the same chair at the same pub. Technology might have changed but working class life isn’t all that different.

So with all the apocalyptic headlines recently maybe the end of Corrie, and the world, isn’t too far away. But if it started all over again, honouring Tony Warren's original idea, it could start pretty close to how it all kicked off the first time round.

But with Twitter.
