Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 11 July 2025

Good evening.  Gary comes round.  He is surprised to find he is called Chesney Winter-Brown and has a wife called Gemma and comes to the conclusion that the bang on his head has done real damage.  He uses a phone to call the landline at Audrey's to speak to Maria and the nursing staff think he has two wives when she arrives at the hospital.  He gives Maria his wife's phone number and it turns out to be Lou's mobile.  Maria then phones the landline at the salon as well and entreats David to keep Lou there until she can get back.  Lou denies any involvement but then admits (accidentally) to knowing that Gary's credit card was used to buy food at which point Maria somehow manages to summon the police who whisk Lou off to the cop shop for an interrogation.

In a fascinating diversion Lou earlier planted Gary's bank card on Summer who accidentally tips her bag out in front of Nina before both are interviewed by the police after the police received an anonymous tip off (from Lou) that they had assaulted Gary/Chesney.  Frankly m'dear they were not capable of such violence and even DC Green comes to the same conclusion but Nina turns on Summer because she cannot explain having the card.  Nina and Summer are not on speakers any longer.

Randomly Ollie chats up Dee Dee in the Rovers whilst she is looking at a picture of James and Laila.  Olllie is a ducker and diver and gets to buy her a drink.  James is not really talking to Dee Dee after the events of yesterday but he tracks her down in the Rovers to tell her that he is pushing ahead with the adoption full steam.  Otherwise James and Dee Dee are not on speakers.  Dee Dee visits the Bailey house later and asks Laila if she remembers her.  Dee admits to Ed that she might be having doubts.  She is heading to Glasgow for a few days to get things straight in her head.

Aadi is trying to help Lauren and buys her an air fryer as a flat warming present (and obviously he still feels immensely guilty but she does not know that).  Earlier Shona had assured Lauren that boys of that age only have one thing on their mind and so Lauren tells Aadi to stuff the fryer where the sun does not shine and storms off.  Later she espies Aadi being the good samaritan and changing Fiz's flat tyre out of the goodness of his heart and suspects she might have misjudged the lad and Shona then advises her that she might need to apologise for her earlier intemperance.  But at the moment there is no speakers between Aadi and Lauren.

Kev is finding it impossible to maintain the deception that he has cancer.  He eats a meal deal in the precinct and Ty gets a pictorial record challenging him later.  He promises Ty he will tell Abi later even if she leaves him - but Abi comes home with a booking for a couple of nights in a nice hotel in the Lake District so he cannot tell her and just about everyone knows now apart from Abi and Debbie - so all will soon become clear - both will want to kill him.

Social services agree to Brody, Joanie and Shanice staying with Sal, although Brody prefers his own bed but the girls get a sleepover.  Brody is able to speak to Mick who is kitted up with a mobile phone and tells Brody to keep the phone turned on as something is going down tomorrow.

I am a little caustic at times in these reviews and I have to admit that trying to navigate the excruciating plot (black) holes in this episode has left me struggling.  I am not going to enumerate them; but a reminder that this is a Manchester back street where people tell us about their lives and relationships living in the 'hood.  Can we please get back to stories about the people, interacting on the Street, not in a hospital, or a police station?  Entertainment in the Rovers, family dinners and scenes in the knicker stitching room please.  Getting Gary to try and act his socks off whilst lying in a bed with that stupid tube up his nose (does that ever happen in a hospital?) is an ask too far.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 13 June 2025

Good evening.  I have returned and will therefore provide a brief update of events on Friday night.  Much centred around the Platt household who were having a house re-warming episode to exorcise Gail and to show off all the new furniture and decorations in the house.  This is mainly a barbecue in the garden but David is keen to show off the new furniture including the table for which an oak tree died and on which Shona is not permitted to place any nibbles when the family start arriving.  Audrey has decided that instead of a family party she is going to a farewell drinks do with her former neighbours in Grasmere Drive, whilst there are ructions when Shona admits to asking Leanne (who cannot make it) as Nick is keen to remind her of the sins which Leanne committed.  They all express views on how they might redecorate their pads - all sound a little outrageous!

A running sore throughout the episodes is Lou (and her children) who has a run in with Maria in the first two minutes after advising Liam not to get stressed over his chemistry GCSE if he is not going to be a scientist.  Later she observes Audrey put the salon cash takings (really?) in a brown envelope and give them to Shona for banking as David had forgotten to do it.  Shona leaves her phone on the salon counter.  Lou tells Brody that the family need to do more to fit in if living around the Street but he is not bothered, nor will he pick up the girls later so Lou leans on Tim who collapses without much resistance and agrees to look after them.  Joanie and Shanice are watching television quite politely when Sal returns from work.  Tim sells it to Sally as getting some practice in before the social workers appear again.  Sal defers her planned beauty session and comes downstairs moaning about Tim's untidy habits and voices get raised.  The two girls get quite upset.  Eventually peace is restored and we learn about the arguments in the girl's house. Later Tim and Sally start wondering if Lou is a fit mother and that perhaps Lou should not be permitted to collect the girls.  They believe that something must be done.

Along at Carla's flat Lisa is house hunting and staring at remote country cottages whilst Carla has her heart set on a city centre, open floor plan with a roof terrace and a coffee shop less than 2 minutes away.  So this is going to be hard to achieve.  Lisa is quite dismissive of the floor to ceiling windows in these loft places!  Carla suggests Ancoats and apparently you need £0.5m!  Betsy appears from the bedroom and the house hunting computer is rapidly closed.  Betsy makes an excuse that she is seeing Dylan today so cannot go to lunch with her mother.  She is of course lying and with new bestie Lauren the two of them are at the local prison waiting to see Logan Ratcliffe, although he is not so keen to see them it seems.  However Steve is able to tell Lisa at lunchtime in the Rovers that Betsy and Lauren are in prison visiting someone - Highfield.  Logan eventually emerges and effectively plays with her wish to know the truth - asking for money and implying he might know more than he probably does.  Eventually admits he is winding Betsy up.  Betsy returns home and is challenged by Lisa.  After some discussion the great soap lie emerges "no more secrets" and they tell Betsy about buying a house together and that the allegation against Becky were falsified.  They settle down on the sofa and start looking at properties on the interwebby thingy.

Whilst David and Nick argue over the barbecue Lou pops into return Shona's phone and gets invited to stay for a drink, Maria's body language at Lou's arrival is worth a thousand words. Gary arrives a little later with Vin Diesel which David thought had been put in the skip but it was rescued and as Gary has not sold it he donates it back to David.  Gary gets himself a drink and exchanges a few words with Lou which leads to Maria storming across the garden to pick a fight with the woman chatting to her man.  Gary tells her to back off.  Later food is being consumed even if the courgette is completely cremated and Maria spots Lou slipping indoors.  Nick proposes a toast to the Platts - love, peace and harmony.  When Lou comes down from the toilet she is tempted by the salon cash and goes to Shona's bag looks at it and puts it back - Maria comes in and after exchanging words there is a scuffle.  Glass smashes and Lou is lying on the remains of that nice new table.

In the interest of trying to put things right Gary, as the only sober person, takes Lou, who claims she was pushed, to hospital.  He argues with Maria and Shona proves the money is still in her bag.  At the hospital Lou is patched up in no time at all with a couple of stitches and Gary convinces her not to report it to the police after admitting that things are not good between him and Maria at present.  He returns home where he catches David and Maria talking and he gets the hump saying that having heard both sides he reckons that Lou's story is more credible.  Later Maria challenges Gary saying that he fancies her - he tells her she is being ridiculous and later he goes off in a huff.  Lou phones Tim who is talked into letting them have a sleepover - so there is no-one to be able to give an alibi for either Lou or Gary so I think we can all guess what might happen next.  What does happen is that the police come into the Rovers and Maria is arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm against Louise Michaelis.  .

There were some scenes involving George and Todd both pining for Eileen and Theo respectively.  I think they were supposed to be comedic but sad people do not always make for strong comedy.  As ever the Platt family en famille were highly entertaining and long may that continue.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 23 May 2025

Good evening.  We are in a timewarp this week as all of the action since Monday has been on a single day in the life of Kit Green.  So we open with Mick having taken Bernie hostage and parked on some wasteland behind Marchand Street, whilst over at the hospital Craig has died and Kirk says he cannot - he is only 26.  The news soon reaches Swain and Green that the constable has died.

Bernie keeps phoning Kit - but he is rejecting her calls as he assumes it is about the quads and not that she is in deep trouble.  Mick insists that the only copper he needs is Kit as he has his uses.  Mick continues to drink and then he binds Bernie's hands with a tie.  Bernie mentions Craig and Mick remarks that the pig got what was coming to him.  Mick claims his life was ruined the day he met Kit as he is a cheat and a liar.  Mick rages.  In an attempt to calm Mick Bernie agrees with him, she let him down and Kit has not forgiven her.

Tim has put Joanie and Shanice to bed when he lets Lou in.  She explains that she went to look for Brody - but I am not sure Tim believes it.  No-one seems to know where Brody is.  Lou asks Tim if he can look after the girls for a while as she knows they will be safe with him.  She admits she is desperate and he agrees providing she promises to return.  She promises.

Gemma is looking for Bernie as numerous police cars roll to a halt on the Street and Kit issues instructions to visits all residences.  He spots Lou and asks why she left the hospital.  Kit asks Lou where to find Mick.  He tells the uniform officers to arrest her for assisting an offender.  He tells Tim that she was helping a murderer to escape - revealing the death of Craig.

Mick hauls Bernie out of the van and waving his baseball bat takes her inside an adjacent building.  Mick remains convinced that Kit will call him back and as if by magic he does.  He tell Kit to get there or his mum will be sent home in bits.  Mick is sure it will work as he knows Kit too well.  And his "lie detector" bat will work out if Kit has any feelings for Bernie.

In the Rovers they are re-assuring themselves that Craig will be like a Weeble and will soon be back amongst them.  Gary comes in and tells the regulars that Craig has died.

Kit arrives at the wasteland.  He checks the van and then goes to look at the building from which Mick and Bernie emerge.  Kit and Mick exchange barbs concerning Bernie being a worthwhile hostage.  Mick goes to hit Bernie and Kit attempts to get closer - but Mick merely feints and it shows that Kit does care about Bernie.  So he does have a bargaining chip.  Mick tells Kit to go to his home, get his passport and put him on a flight out of town.  Kit does not move and says he refuses to assist Mick.  Mick reminds Kit that he is owed for the year he spent inside.  And Kit took his girl whilst he was inside.  Kit says they were both kids and he is sorry.  Mick says the year inside is what messed him up.  Kit is not buying it.  Prison did not turn him into a criminal - he was one already.  Kit tells Mick he messes up lives and now he has taken Craig's.  Mick says Kit is lying - but slowly Mick grasps that he has killed a copper.  And courts do not like cop murderers either.  Kit suggests Mick hands himself in.

At the police station Lou is being interviewed.  She claims she hit her head when she fell.  DS Swain gets her to confirm that there was a "nothing" domestic earlier but she does not know where Mick is now.  Lou knows nothing helpful - they are just an ordinary family.  DS Swain lists the problems in the last 24 hours including a son, just out of STC who is already back in a police cell.  A little later DS Swain tells Lou she is free to go - so long as she does not go far as they will be in touch.  She asks if she can take Brody home - but as he remains drunk he stays where he is until he is interviewed.  DS Swain makes it clear that Mick will be going to prison.

Bernie wants a last word before Mick lays into her.  She tells Kit she tried to make contact with him - but his other mother sent her away.  And then his adoptive mother died and Bernie did not want him thinking badly of his mother.  But he was not completely abandoned.  Kit knows - he found the note.  Bernie asks if he knew why did he make her suffer?  She runs to Kit and starts hitting him.  Mick follows and separates them which gives Kit a chance to grab the baseball bat.  However Mick recovers and hits Kit's leg - so Bernie can get to her phone and summon the police.  Kit and Mick tussle - but Mick again gets the upper hand standing over Kit.

Sirens howl, distracting Mick whom Bernie rushes at and once he is on the ground Kit recovers sufficiently to formally arrest him for murder.

Grief - Tim is crying but then has to amuse the two girls.  Sally cries.  Chesney and Gemma are overjoyed that Bernie returns safely.  Kirk is stunned, he is still holding Craig's lucky tie.  A glass is raised by Glenda, Sean, Steve, Asha, David and Gary at the bar.  Music plays in the background as Corrie goes into montage moment.

At the police station Kit apologises DS Swain and acknowledges he should have been with Craig.  In an interview room DS Swain lays out the events in which Mick has been involved and suggests he works with his solicitor to formulate a statement confirming his part in the death of PC Tinker and his subsequent attempt to run.  The interview is suspended.

Ches, Gemma and Bernie discuss events and whilst Bernie is saying little even Gemma works out that there is something between Kit and Mick.  Bernie denies knowledge - or at least it is not her story to tell.  And Gemma is not to ask Kit.

Sal has phoned Sophie who is shocked.  Shanice and Joanie are asleep again and Lou is at the door.  They tell her Mick has been arrested.  Lou says she has been home but Mick has trashed the place and she does not want the girls to see it.  Tim does not want to disturb them and Sal accepts that they should be with their mother tonight.  She can stay one night - Lou cannot believe they are so kind.

The police interview restarts and Mick reads his statement.  He admits being stopped by PC Tinker who told him that he was not over the limit and could proceed on his way.  The officer was alive and well when last seen.  The further allegations made by DC Green are wholeheartedly refuted.  He was assaulted and handcuffed when quietly minding his own business.  He has been subject to a campaign of harassment from the detective going back over 15 years.  He will be making an official complaint.  DS Swain says that it is a shame that he does not have an alibi.  Busking it Mick assures her that he does.  He explains that after he parted company with PC Tinker he met his son Brody and they were together until he met Kit and Bernie later.  DS Swain considers this interesting since his solicitor is aware that Brody has been in a cell at the station for most of the day.  Mick is to be charged with murder.

In another parallel universe Craig is meeting the girl at the table and they will eventually marry, have many children and be important players on the Street for the next sixty years.  Kirk takes on the job of explaining events to her.  Later they discuss Darryl the rat who was named after Beth's layabout ex.  Kirk cannot get hold of Beth to tell her.  Maria assures Kirk that to everyone locally Kirk is Craig's father.  Kirk's phone rings and he has to tell Beth the news.

Tim is going to call Faye.  Sal meanwhile is concerned what the neighbours will think about them giving a room to Lou.  But Tim knows that Lou has also suffered at Mick's hands.  Sal knows local people will be angry - but Tim says that is for tomorrow.

Lisa returns to the flat where she breaks down in tears.  Carla gives her a huge hug.  A little later they sit on the sofa talking about Craig and what might have happened and a career which killed him.  Carla acknowledges it is all so horrible but it was Mick who killed him.

Sarah and then Bernie visit Kit.  He is telling Sarah nothing and she departs but Bernie needs answers.  Bernie has come to deliver Kit's birthday present.  Kit admits that he has kept the little green elephant which was with him.  Bernie has not seen it for 30 years.  Kit hoped it might tell him something about his origins.  His parents looked after him - but an adoptee always wants to know about a bit of their personality which does not make sense.  He says he never really fitted in and Mick took advantage of that feeling.  He still feels lost.  Bernie apologises.  However Kit also admits he is at fault for Craig's death.  Bernie moves to hug him.

Across at Carla's Lisa is saying that people cannot put off those things which they should do.  You always think there is more time - and sometimes there isn't.  Carla observes that if you spend living every day as if it is your last then you just burn out.  Lisa looks at Carla and says "Marry me".  She repeats it and the credits roll.

Well as far as I can recall we never did get the end of the story where Chesney found out that Mick knew all along it was him that was tormenting him.  Unless I missed it during my holiday.  The two girls appear to be older than I expected - but maybe I missed that explanation as well.  I wish Colson Smith every success with his future career - what ever it may bring.  And will Carla accept that proposal?  Carla Connor-Swain?

Many thanks to all those who kindly explained the little green elephant last week.
