Jack P Shepherd interview: David in danger from Harvey

David’s got himself into a real mess, is he panicking about what he’s got himself into with Harvey, his debt, the Radcliffe brothers, and how is going to get out of it?

When the dog was run over David knew that was a deliberate threat, there’s then an attack on the house, Shona goes missing and it feels the threats are ramping up. They’re not just meeting David in dark alleys anymore, they’re physically hurting members of his family. When it becomes general conversation on the street that Mason was killed by one of his brothers, who are the two that are after David, he really starts to panic.

How worried is he now these threats are ramping up?

He’s very worried because the Radcliffe brothers are now known killers and if they’re prepared to do that to their own brother, he knows they’re not going to hesitate once they get the nod to kill him.

Did David not realise at the start, when he made the decision to steal the money, how potentially dangerous Harvey could be?

He did, but the money was there, there was an opportunity and he took it. He didn’t think any further down the line. Then even when he started getting the threats off the brothers, he thought I can keep them at bay, it’s not that bad. He wasn’t that intimidated by them at first, but now they’ve murdered Mason they come with a bit more weight.

When Shona goes missing, and he suspects Harvey is behind it, how does David feel to realise he’s put this family in danger, not just himself?

Knowing that no one is safe and they could come after his whole family, he’s panicked and he’s desperate. He’s trying to think of ways to pay the money back but it’s a huge lump sum to come up with and he’s bricking it. He’s selling anything personal he has but he’s barely scratching the surface.

With Shona missing he goes to the police, to Kit, does he trust him after history with Shona?

He comes clean to Kit over stealing the money and asks him to go have a word with Harvey about the threats but of course Harvey denies having anything to do with it. David doesn’t really trust Kit, he doesn’t particularly like him after he went after his wife but he’s out of options. He’s got himself in a real mess and he doesn’t know how he’s going to get out of this.

At the end of the week we see David meet up with Andy who he met in prison, what is he thinking?

David knows Andy is dodgy, available to hire to anyone really, so he goes to him to ask if he has any work lined up that he could be involved in to come up with the money quick. He thinks if he can get involved in some petty crimes he can potentially get out of trouble but this isn’t going to end well. He's now in with Andy, who’s in with Harvey, doing jobs on the sly, hopefully unbeknown to Harvey to pay off Harvey!

Are you enjoying playing David again on the wrong side of the law?

Yes definitely, when it’s high octane and you’re moving from one explosive story to the next, possibly with stunts, it’s fun. The Platts are all involved too which I love and as always each of the siblings want to know what’s going on in each others’ lives. It’s nice when there’s so much playing out within the family. It’s been really great that Gail’s exit has sparked up all these new problems for the Platts.

Would you like to play David totally down on his luck?

I love playing David in all forms, if he’s down and depressed then he’s reckless and that’s exciting to play. But I also like playing him when he’s evil and he’s trying to think of his next plan, or when he’s funny and it’s laugh a minute. I’m lucky to get to play it all. There’s no one particular side that I prefer, I like it all, he’s a great character to play. David’s unpredictable, even for soap, you can see where it’s going with certain stories and that it’s not going to end well but you’re not quite sure how he’s going to get out of it or if he’s going to win in the end but hopefully he does.
