Croppers celebrate 10th wedding anniversary... or do they?

Roy and Hayley Cropper recently came top of a poll of best Corrie weddings. And on April 21st this year they'll celebrate 10 years of wedded bliss. Or at least they would if they were married.

Cast your mind back to Coronation Street in April 1999 when Roy and Hayley's dream of a church wedding was scuppered by Les Battersby who sent in a baying pack of journalists to ruin the church ceremony. The Croppers ended up having a blessing in Roy's Rolls cafe instead of the church do.

However, all of this was before a major change in the law which allows that transsexual people can legally wed. The Gender Recognition Act of 2004 finally established in law that trans people could legally register as their current sex, meaning that proper, legal marriage is now possible. There's more on that law here and about the Corrie wedding at Press for Change (of which Julie Hesmondhalgh, the actress who plays Hayley, is patron).

With Roy Cropper being as law-abiding and pedantic as he is, and with Hayley being British primetime television's first transsexual and an established, much-loved Corrie woman in her own right now, isn't it time that ITV did the right thing and married off Roy and Hayley properly, legally, lovingly?

Absolutely! Even if they don't make a big deal about it and just do it on the quiet, i think it should happen.

The powers that be have a short time to do this story justice...

Let's hope!

This storyline would be such a breath of fresh air amongst the Kevin/Molly dulldrums currently going on. Rather than showing couples cheating and hurting each other... highlight a couple with love and respect for each other!
