Coronation Street's Gail inspires new art exhibition

I love this. 

A DIY art collective has named their latest exhibition in honour of Coronation Street’s Gail Platt.

The exhibition will run at the Old Town House on Buttermarket Street in Warrington from Saturday, December 2.

Blowing a Gail, named in honour of Coronation Street’s Gail, will see around 40 artists showcasing their creations – ranging from a portrait of the soap character herself to a dazzling bejewelled television. Other exhibits include locations in the town painted in a surrealist style, a revolving puppet doll, travel photography and illustrations inspired by powerful women from history and pop culture.

The latest exhibition continues a theme of naming events after Coronation Street characters, following others in honour of Deirdre Barlow, Betty’s hot pot and Hilda Ogden’s mispronounced Muriel (mural) while the group’s own name was itself inspired by an iconic line from the latter.

Co-curator Sophie New  said: “When we first started, we never intended for it to be Corrie-themed but Coronation Street has run throughout Womanstanley and I think it gives us an unpretentious that makes us approachable. With it being December and us calling it Blowing a Gail, a few people have taken that and worked on a theme of it being wintery or Gail but the way people have approached it is really diverse. One of the good things about it is that it’s open without any restrictions or rules – if you’ve got something then you should be able to show it."

Catherine Tyldesley opens new Manchester pub

 

Catherine Tyldesley, who plays Eva Price in Coronation Street, official opened a new pub inside Selfridges Manchester this week.

Catherine said: "I love Christmas shopping and the atmosphere in the city centre as everyone is rushing about and picking presents for loved ones. Enjoying a festive tipple or joining in a pub quiz is the perfect way to finish off a busy shopping day.”

With specially craft ales supplied by local brewer Alphabet Brewery Company (ABC), The Exchange Arms will host a number of fun and festive events over the next few weeks.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 29 Nov 2017

It's another Wednesday double of Weatherfield drama.

As repercussions of Anna's arrest reverberate, Faye still has Phelan on a metaphorical pedestal. A disgruntled Izzy suggests to Gary that its time that Faye knew about Phelan's hideous crime against Anna. Meeting in the cafe, Gary tries to persuade Faye that Phelan is bad news. Struggling to sway the youngster, she remains relentless, so he unwittingly blurts out the truth.

Dismayed yet unfaltering in her view, Faye's betrayal of Anna is horrendous. She dismisses Gary's account of the 'Owen' saga, the rape itself and refuses to acknowledge Pat Phelan's criminality. Is this all part of Pat's revenge?.

Phelan certainly hasn't forgotten Gary beating him up and of course, he has every (bitter and twisted) reason to seek revenge on Anna. He's hypnotised Faye and Seb, and now he's spying on Nicola. Just how far will Phelan go, to take control of this situation?.

As Aidan receives news of a possible factory sale, he is also vastly losing control. Looking to cool his feud with his sister Kate (after punching his dad, MS sufferer Johnny) will he be able to save Underworld from being sold to Mathew Singh? With Johnny and Jenny deciding to retire in Spain (Jenny Bradley can't leave, please!) will Kate decide to go with them? As 'kana' tensions remain high, will Kate look to Spanish senoritas and leave Rana behind?.

With Kate struggling to compose herself in the Bistro, owner Robert is heading to Weatherfield hospital for his 'unmentionables' operation (it's called Testicular Cancer, come on Corrie) and after failing to get agreement on a loan extension, how far will Robert gamble this time? Will a few 'hail marys' from Michelle's Catholic mum, save the day?

Over in the Children's Dept. of Weatherfield General (we see a lot of this place nowadays), little George is still recovering from his most recent illness. Falling ill in the company of Mary, Jude and Angie are deliberating as to whether Mary has anything to do with this latest bout, or is it a coincidence that he always falls ill in her presence?

As Mary arrives at the hospital, it isn't long before, the 'crash team' are called to little George, and his illness now seems more serious. As accusations are thrown, Jude remains in defense of his mum but are Angie's demons skewing her view of Mary? Did Mary do any harm to baby George? Now under investigation by social services, Mary seeks comfort from Norris. Is she generally upset or carrying some sort of guilty conscience?

Still carrying a lot of guilt is my favourite Weatherfield Vicar, Billy. Up early scrolling on 'friends connect' (Weatherfield's answer to Facebook), Billy is seen searching for Gareth Brannigan. Is 'Gareth' culpable in their robbery and the death of Susan Barlow?.

I think Billy may need more than religious salvation to get out this one.

Coronation Street episode review, Wednesday 29 Nov, 8.30pm

At the end of the 7.30pm episode, Faye went off in a strop because she thinks her family are obsessed with Pat Phelan and that he is not so bad, after all. She has all the facts, but has made her mind up. 

Meanwhile, Mary is becoming paranoid and scared, given that baby George is often ill in her care. Maybe he is allergic to Lily of the Valley or Oil of Olay. 

Kate has declared she is running off to Spain. Her friends suspect something is wrong, because it is all very sudden. Grab Rana on the Red Rec and tell her you love her! 

Meanwhile back at the hospital (most eps take place here now, Corrie meets Casualty) Robert comes round from his op and is delirious. It is probably the amount of storylines he has had to deal with since getting out of prison. 

Billy meets an old friend (played by the brilliant Tam Ryan) and starts fishing for the truth and the pal threatens him. I cannot buy this story arc, as Billy has never mentioned this dark side before. Luke Sywalker wouldn't suddenly start heavy breathing and declaring he'd smoked before we met him! 

Rita and Norris have a chat about Mary and whether there is no smoke without fire. Rana and Aidan have a chin wag and once Aidan finds out about Kate's plans, his arched eyebrow says "I gotta get involved." Reet and Norris 'appen to be passing as Social Services knock the door to speak to Mary. Norris stands in the background like the Priest in The Exorcist, as Mary is grilled.  Social workers in soaps are always represented as do-gooders, who go for the good folk. Mary shouts and then sits confused looking like Blanche DuBois, in A Streetcar Named Desire but she is not depending on the kindness of strangers, as Norris is the one who offers a voice of reason.

Robert is looking stern and stony-faced, as he has debts, following his stint in Ocean's 11, Salford style.

Jude calls round and turns Judas, as he is now convinced that Mary is making his son ill. He asks her to "stop ringing." Mary gets angry and wants answers. 

David's beard has now grown so much, that he could lurk in the undergrowth and call himself David Bellamy. Phelan calls round and Gary and him square off in the kitchen. The feud continues. Yawn! 

Kate insists she is still of to Espana but Luke gives a look that says, "I know it's not for you!" It's good that Kate finally has someone to open up to. 

Billy meets up with Shona and asks how a gangsta's mum lives with it all, meaning 'I'm a former crim, get me out of here!' He'd convince me me if he were to eat cockroaches than swallow this back story. 

Beth gossips about Mary and she walks into The Rovers with Norris. Mary asks Norris if he has been running her down and leaves the pub. In the beer garden, doting dad Phelan wants to talk about his daughter and her unborn baby. "I need you to tell her you want to be part of her life and the baby's life." Gary is stuck now, like his mum. 

How long can Phelan go on for? Is baby George allergic to Mary's nivea face cream, will #Kana tell the street their secret, or will someone hear Luke? Find out on Friday!

A decent episode but, for me - there's too much Phelan, bring back Roy Cropper!
