6 episodes per week - how's it working for you?

How are the six episodes of Coronation Street working for you? Indeed, are they working... or not?

It's been over two months now since the extra episode of Coronation Street was added to the scheduled. The additional episode taking us to six episodes per week began on September 18th 2017.

Does it feel like forever, I wonder?

I'm really interested to hear your thoughts, leave a comment below.

Do you think six episodes are too many? Or are you enjoying them all?

Bear in mind that we're having seven episodes next week as Corrie catch up on episodes missed due to football next week too.

Consumed by Coronation Street

We're all excited for the impending sixth episode of Coronation Street later in the Autumn, not only because it'll bring more action, characters and storylines but also because there's to be an exciting set expansion alongside it. The last time we were given the opportunity to see more of Weatherfield was back in 1999 - the year of my birth, when us viewers saw the exterior of Victoria Street for the first time. Given I was yet to be born I don't know how Corrie watchers of the time felt about this new addition but I for one am very excited to see what the next few months brings in terms of businesses, houses and other recreational areas such as a small park which has been teased by Kate Oates.

The exploits of Hilda Ogden amazed viewers for 23 years
Anyway, onto the main point of my blog. This sixth episode will bring a whole extra half an hour a week of Coronation Street to us and whilst that doesn't seem a lot per week, in the long run we'll be spending a whole lot more time watching our favourite soap.

Over the past year, not including extended or extra episodes, or any times that an episode has been cancelled due to that god awful football, we've spent approximately five and a half days watching Corrie. That's nearly a whole week of a year that we spend dedicated to the lives of other people.

If you think that's a lot, just wait until this time next year, when we could have spent another whole day watching Corrie once the sixth episode is added to the weekly schedules.

But what makes us so transfixed by soap operas, and especially Coronation Street? Why are we so consumed by the daily goings on of a bunch of fictional characters? Just a few things worth thinking about as I conclude this small but important post. And who knows where we might be in ten years time? Could we see a 7th weekly episode?

Coronation Street sixth episode - when would you like it on?

Last year Coronation Street producer Kate Oates announced that the show was adding an extra weekly Coronation Street episode.  You can read more on that here.

The show is moving from the current five episodes to six episodes each week later this year. At the moment, all we know is that the extra episode will take place "in the autumn".  We will, as always, bring you full details of any official announcement of the 6th episode as soon as we have it.

However, in advance of any announcement from ITV, I'm wondering when YOU would like the extra episode to take place?

I'm all for a Sunday night episode. I love the cosy feel of a Coronation Street episode on a Sunday night, curled up on the sofa, ready to face the week ahead.

But maybe you'd prefer a double Wednesday instead? Or a Tuesday or Thursday episode? How about a Saturday - ooh, now that's a radical thought.

When would YOU like the 6th episode of Coronation Street to air?

Coronation Street set to be expanded for 6 episodes

Following the announcement yesterday that Coronation Street is moving to six, yes six, episodes per week in 2017, there's more news on what this will entail.

First off, the Coronation Street set will be expanded. The Guardian reports today that the current eight acre set in Trafford, Manchester, will be expanded to accommodate the extra filming.

In an email to staff, ITV producers said they would be holding a series of face to face meetings with staff to discuss the changes and the extra workload it would entail.

Programme makers said teams would be expanded “right across the board” and said the extra episode would enable a wider variety of storylines encompassing more families and give “space for the comedy of the show to really breathe”.

“The talent and commitment of the Corrie team, writers, cast, and crew will be central to making a sixth episode into reality,” said the email.

“We’ll also have substantial investment in our physical infrastructure, extending the current lot and creating additional studio space. And we’ll be able to strengthen and increase our teams right across the board to support making the additional episodes.

“It will also enable us to enhance all the positive things we currently do and are rightly proud of, such as training, apprenticeships, social inclusion, and sustainability.

“Editorially, moving to six episodes will give room for a larger variety of A stories spread more equally across our character groups and families. It will also help us ensure that our lighter stories don’t get squeezed out, giving space for the comedy of the show to really breathe.

“We’ll be going on air with six episodes in the autumn of 2017. That’s over a year away so it gives us the opportunity to define a bespoke Coronation Street solution for how we’ll achieve six, while carefully maintaining and enhancing the quality of what we do.

“To this end we’re setting up a project team of subject matter experts from across Corrie and the business. The team will pull together detailed plans covering all the editorial and operational elements.
