Corrie Blog Interviews Joe Duttine. Is Tim Metcalfe Stephen’s Final Victim?

STEPHEN REID IS DEAD! LONG LIVE PETER BARLOW!

Stephen Reid's death was no biggie for me, as the Coronation Street Press Day on October 2nd revealed the ending, but we were all sworn to secrecy, and of course, I kept my word. In all honesty, though, I’ve no idea what is going to happen to Tim. By the end of this high-octane, thriller-driven, Platt-driven, Peter Barlow-driving super soap week fest, Tim remains stuck in the boot of a car in the middle of the woods, and nobody knows where he is, or even if he is alive.

As part of the Super Soap Week press day Corrie Blog spoke to Joe Duttine (who plays Tim) about this past week's dramatics!

Hey Joe,

By the end of this week, we don't know whether Tim is okay or not! Why did Tim suspect Stephen from the very beginning?

Because he saw his Mum go through such a terrible time with his Dad, any bloke that comes into his Mum’s life - he's going to be suspicious. Stephen’s just too smarmy, Tim could see that from a mile off! He couldn't quite put his finger on it for a long time, but little events made them alert to him.

Do you think Tim could ever imagine the extent of Stephen’s crimes?

It's only when he goes down to the canal and discovers the body that the reality of it hits him. That's when his suspicions were confounded.

Is Tim being a bit daft then going after Stephen, knowing he’s done that?

Tim just thinks in the moment doesn't he, he doesn't think about the danger of it. He’s turned down two tickets to see Wethy County so it's a big deal! He’s also disappearing from his anniversary celebrations so something has got his goat!

He’s not scared either, is he?

No, I don’t think he is scared. I don't think he thinks he’s putting himself in any danger. He just thinks he’s gonna sort Stephen out and then have some Moroccan food with Sally, but it doesn't quite turn out like that.

What was it like filming those scenes?

It was great. It was great to do something different and to get out of the building. When you get to film in real-life locations it adds a certain reality to things. It's nice to be with the crew on location and have lunch together, it feels like a sleepover. It was physically challenging, and the volume wall was a first for me. It is great to experience that new technology. It was quite an experience, we had a great time!

Should the viewers be worried for Tim?

Yeah. I think so! I like the fact that we don't know where he is, or what happened to him! We only got to the scene with the dog sniffing at the car. We had to put a sausage in the car so the dog would sniff the right spot!

Thanks, Joe!

Has Stephen claimed Tim as his final victim, or will Tim live to see another Wethy County match? Watch ITV & ITVX this week to find out.

'It has rocked their world but they will always be OK’ Corrie Press Day Interview with Joe Duttine and Sally Dynevor

We continue our Corrie 60th anniversary blog interviews joining ITV journalist Nina Nannar to have a good chat with Joe Duttine (Tim Metcalfe) and Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe) about Geoff, Sally and Tim’s relationship, and Coronation Street’s legacy.

NN = Nina Nannar, JD = Joe Duttine SD = Sally Dynevor

NN - The Geoff coercive plotline has cast its net far and wide for Tim and Sally.

JD- ‘I think this has opened up another world for Tim, hasn’t it? Tim was quite happy just sitting in the taxi office and eating those pink wafer biscuits. Suddenly his Dad comes along and tells him this massive lie. A whole world of things that Tim now has to explore. It is nice to have this turning point.'

NN- Sally and Tim are that 'classic Corrie' couple on the street. How do you think this whole discovery will affect them?

JD - 'They will bounce back. They will have another night in the conservatory overlooking the hot tub and crack open a nice bottle of something. They will get back on track. It has rocked their world, but they will always be ok, I think.'

NN - How have you found the coercive control storyline?

JD- 'Quite horrible when you think of the reality, but it has been great. Tim has got involved with some characters he wouldn’t normally interact with and the variation as an actor.'

NN - Sally, you have been in Coronation Street for a long time now - how does it feel to be still involved after all these years?

SD - 'I am so proud of Coronation Street, it is an incredible programme to be part of and I am pleased to have been part of this domestic abuse storyline. It is so important, and there is a responsibility to the storytelling. I watch all the montages of years gone by and it's amazing that we have had 60 years of fantastic stories. I have loved this coercive storyline, one of the best I have been in. Coronation Street does comedy and dark drama together so well - I think that is why it's been on for 60 years, they do it better than anyone else.'

NN - When you joined Corrie 30 odd years ago, did you plan to stay in as long as possible or was it just another acting job?

SD - 'No, I left drama school, was in a few telly things, then I got offered Corrie but for only two episodes. I kept getting called back then John Temple (Corrie producer) stopped me in the canteen and asked if I would like a one-year contract. I was amazed, that does not usually happen to an actor. I have enjoyed this job so much. If I left I'd be lost and would miss it so much.'

Keep your eyes peeled for a few more Corrie press day interviews. It was such an honour to join Micheal Le Vell, Sally Carman, Mark Frost, Mikey North, & Sue Devaney for a chat about the Coronation Street demolition plot!

Corrie couple open new Bury bridal boutique

Sally Carman (Abi Franklin) and Joe Duttine (Tim Metcalfe) made the opening of a new bridal shop in Bury one to remember, reports The Bury Times

The bridal shop is a new venture for Bury Hospice and will support its work providing vital care for people living with life-threatening or terminal illness.

Last November, Sally supported the hospice's sell-out fundraising event Strictly Best Foot Forward as one of the judges.

She said: "After hearing the testimonies of people who have accessed the charity, you just realise the impact it is having and how needed it is. At the end of the day, people are losing their loved ones. If you can support a local charity that will help to ease pain or give support to people who might need it, that is a really worthwhile thing to do. Anything we can do to help, we will. We would urge you to support them wherever you can — you never know, you might need them yourselves one day — and they really do need this financial support, so if you can give of your time or money, please do."

She added: "This shop is amazing and about 75 per cent of what is inside is actually brand new so please visit, have a look and spend some money."

Joe Duttine, who plays Tim Metcalfe on Coronation Street and who is dating Sally in real life, said: "It is a really honourable thing to do to come and support a charity that helps people in their hour of need. It is great to see it be successful."

He added: "Tim doesn't know much about dresses."

The couple had scheduled to have a ballroom dancing lesson that afternoon — a Valentine's gift from Sally to Joe.

Visit the store at 20 Union Arcade, in the Mill Gate Shopping Centre, Bury.

Coronation Street Blog interview with Joe Duttine – Tim Metcalfe

Following on from my Connie Hyde feature, this is my report from a recent Corrie press event with the brilliant Joe Duttine.

Having met and interviewed Joe before (in 2014, still available here), I knew that he would give a great interview with interesting and thoughtful responses. Click away to avoid spoilers about Tim’s ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’.

With Sally in prison, Tim will find it difficult to get into the Christmas spirit this year. He will hit the bottle and Gina will offer a shoulder to cry on. However, unfortunately for Tim and Sally fans, she’ll be offering more than just a shoulder.

After a drunken kiss, Tim will wake up on Christmas Eve with a massive hangover. That’s the Street Cars Christmas do for you! Gina will be next to him. She will roll over and look up to see a photo of Tim with Sally on their wedding day. Tim’s memory will be hazy, but he fears he has done something terrible.

According to Joe, Tim “can’t believe it” … it is “devastating for him thinking that he’s cheated on his wife”. It is not clear whether Tim and Gina will actually have ‘done the deed’. Much like Sally’s fraud case, we will have to wait to discover the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Joe Duttine was very honest in saying that he had hoped Tim and Sally’s would be one Corrie relationship that would remain safe: “I wanted to protect it because, as actors, you put a lot of time into your characters and your relationships… you do feel quite protective over them because you get positive feedback, and I think Tim and Sally are a likeable couple”. He’s not wrong.

What Joe enjoys most about Tim and Sally is that “they’re monogamous and they love each other and they’re loyal to each other. They don’t get cheap fixes by going off and having affairs.” However, Joe acknowledges this is the world of soap and so there has to be “some kind of conflict and drama from somewhere”.

Joe was very clear that “it would have been wrong for Tim to play it as though there was any kind of sexual tension” with Gina, saying, “I really didn’t want to play it like that… and I hope that’s how it comes across”. Tim may have been a bit naive, but he thinks Gina is just being nice to him.

Regarding Sally’s court case, Joe thinks a lot of it would have gone over Tim’s head, leaving him “confused and vulnerable, which is probably why this ends up happening”. In Joe’s view, Gina has “got him when he’s weak”.

Tim will soon realise that Gina “is quite calculating and has got a bit of a screw loose”. Tim will set off to ‘confess’ to Sally in prison on Christmas Day. “You’ve got to suspend your disbelief for a minute, laughs Joe, “because I’m not too sure if you’re allowed to do that!” Well, I’ve checked the visiting info for HMP Norcross, Weatherfield and it seems legit…

“He feels as if he owes her the truth”, says Joe … “he can’t keep a lie”. So, Tim “throws caution to the wind and goes to tell her on Christmas Day.” I don't know if he will reveal much, but we can expect “a moment between them”.

Will Sally ever be able to forgive Tim’s possible indiscretion? “I don’t think so”, responds Joe... “it’s pretty unforgiveable.” He reckons the reaction from fans will be mixed. “Some’ll be ‘fair enough, she’s a bit of a nightmare’… and some viewers might completely turn against him”. Joe Duttine is renovating his house in Sheffield and when he goes down the builders’ yard, they tell him to dump Sally and “get one of the other ones”. I disagree with those builders… I’m Team Sally all the way!

The Daily Star is running a campaign to ‘Save Our Sally’. Emulating the ‘Free the Weatherfield One’ campaign of 20 years ago, the paper recently sent a delegation to Downing Street to petition Theresa May. I doubt they got very far, as the Prime Minister is pretty busy trying to save herself right now.

Joe says that Tim has got to get Sally out of prison because “he can’t cope on his own”. When Paula explains that Sally’s only hope is a confession from Duncan, Tim will take matters into his own hands. According to Joe, “he goes to the wire a bit”, although he does not consider Tim to be “a deliberate lawbreaker”. I’m not sure the Police will agree after Tim’s recent violation of the drink-drive limit, not to mention his previous arrest for assaulting Duncan.

I got to ask a few fan questions in this interview. I wanted to know what has happened to Tim’s home brewing, a question that I raised in my blog to mark ‘Beer Day Britain’. “Yeah, bring it back”, enthused Joe… “Bring the window round back, bring all that stuff back… all those interesting vocations… I love all that.” Joe Duttine said that these are “nice little characterful things”, but that “the show is so story driven these days that sometimes the character stuff slightly gets put to one side”.

I also asked about working with Simon Gregson, which Joe thinks is great. He loves the “taxi rank blokey banter” and says, “I’d like to see a bit more of it and I think the viewers would like to see a bit more of that. It’s just light-hearted stuff. There needs to be a bit of light and shade in the show… and [to] just see characters talking nonsense. If you’re invested in the characters, and you like the characters, you’ll sit there watching them talk about the wallpaper.” Agreed!

Christmas dinner will be eventful at number 4. Tim, Gina, Yasmeen and Geoff will be tucking into their meal when Sophie breaks the news that Gina has been meeting up with Duncan. Gina will admit she is in love with Tim. “It’s not the happiest house on Christmas Day”, says Joe.

Joe told us there is “some interesting stuff happening in the New Year”. He can’t see the relationship between Gina and Sally being repaired and feels that the friendship between Tim and Gina will be destroyed. Personally, I hope that Tim does not commit adultery this Christmas and that Sally can forgive a foolish kiss, just as Tim did between her and Kevin.

Joe Duttine is a fantastic actor and a top bloke. It was great to hear about the upcoming storylines in the Metcalfe household. Like Joe, I believe in Tim and Sally. Please writers… don’t split them up!
