Yana, One of Corrie's Unsung Heros

Flaming Nora's post today about a chance to win an exclusive print by Jayne Tunnicliffe made me all nostalgic about the Corrie character she used to play, Yana Lumb. Yana was Cilla's mate. She was tall, trashy, sarky and had legs that went on forever and made the most of them. This photo is from one of my favourite storylines, Cilla's wedding to Les. The hen night was nurses at the ready and didn't she and Cilla look great! Yana did Cilla's hair and makeup the next day and Cilla's "kiss curls" made it look like the demonic 666 on her forehead! Perfect!

The other memorable Yana storyline was her fling with Les that landed them in a bathtub of mushy peas! When Sam Aston was here in Halifax, he recalled that neither actor relished the scenes and it was very cold outside as well. Ah, those were the days! Once Cilla left, there wasn't much call for Yana but wouldn't it be fun to see her? Maybe she could encounter Chesney in the market. Or, wouldn't you like to see the look on Liz's face if she turned up on Big Jim's arm?

Coronation Sheep go on display

Jayne Tunnicliffe, who played Coronation Street's fab Yana Lumb has created pop art sheep for the Flock to Skipton Event.

The sheep include a Bet Lynch Coronation Sheep, John Lennon All You Need is Love sheep, and a skeletal Baa-Bones sheep.

Jayne said: “The idea of the Coronation Sheep was mutton dressed as lamb. It’s also the 50th anniversary of the show. I’m not sure what Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) would think about being made to look like a sheep though.

The Coronation Sheep has been sponsored by the Skipton Building Society after it was voted top design by members of staff, and will be placed in the High Street branch.

Flock to Skipton will be launched on Saturday, August 14, at Art in the Pen at Skipton Auction Mart. The sheep will be seen out in the town the following week.

Jayne Tunnicliffe's fun jewellery range on sale

In addition to being a talented actress and artist, Jayne Tunnicliffe, who played Coronation Street's Yana Lumb, has now designed her own jewellery range. Jayne describes her work as "kitsch and fun" and it even has some Corrie influences too.

The jewellery is inspired by music, TV, film, literature, old style tattoos, rockabilly, burlesque and gothic Victoriana. One of her necklaces features mafia boss Tony Soprano flanked by pistols, uttering some of his infamous swear words. Another necklace features characters from Alice in Wonderland. Hilda Ogden’s three flying ducks feature in a third creation, alongside bejewelled earrings featuring such luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, Morrissey, Edgar Allen Poe and Elsie Tanner.

Find out more about Jayne's jewellry at Voodoville or if you're in Manchester, pop into Prior Jewels, 2nd Floor, Afflecks, 52 Church Street, Manchester to see Jayne's jewellery range for sale.

Corrie icons as you've never seen them before

Regular readers (hello, mum) will know I'm a huge fan of Corrie's Yana Lumb and rate her as one of Coronation Street's unsung heros. Anyway, Jayne Bickerton (nee Tunnicliffe) who played Yana has some wonderful YouTubage online now.

This one and this one are my favourites, it's Jayne as stand-up comedian Mary Unfaithful in a self-penned show for Granada from 1997 about her female Corrie role models, including Elsie Tanner, Bet Lynch, Ena Sharples and Hilda Ogden. Jayne filmed these on the Coronation Street set seven years before she got her part in Coronation Street as Yana Lumb.

Why not check out more of Jayne's work as Mary Unfaithful when she's working with Paul O'Grady as Lily Savage. There's a few YouTubes here, here, here and here and a short clip of Jayne when she was recently on the Paul O'Grady show with her Burlesque art work t'other week.
