Towards a new Corrie normal

I was planning to write a blog post about how my relationship with Coronation Street has changed since this time last year. It was going to be titled “Corrie is what happens while you're busy making other plans” because although I had started to drift apart from my favourite programme, I never imagined a situation where Corrie might go off air.

But when COVID-19 hit and ITV pulled production, this was suddenly a possibility. Indeed, Corrie fans were facing a Weatherfield-shaped hole in the TV schedule from the end of June.

It now looks like this scenario will be avoided. If all goes well with the resumption of filming today, Coronation Street will continue with three episodes per week in July. This is good news. I may have partially cut the Corrie apron strings but I really would miss it if it stopped.

Earlier this year, my Mum – the other great constant in my life – sadly passed away. She was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and we lost her in January. So, while all this was going on, Corrie went from being an instrumental part of my life to something much more incidental. It was still there in the background, but I just didn’t fancy escaping my own life to tune in to difficult storylines like Paul’s historic child abuse, Carla’s psychosis and of course Sinead’s battle with cancer. These are all important subjects, but not ones I wanted to distract myself with. So, I switched off.

I associate Coronation Street with my Mum. Watching it now is tinged with sadness because we can’t talk over the storylines and discuss all the spoilers like we used to. But the show must go on and I’m pleased to say I’ve been enjoying Corrie in recent months. Things aren’t much lighter in Weatherfield but there are still plenty of lovely bits in between the relentless issue-based bits.

Over the past few weeks, Evelyn and Arthur’s friendship has provided some sweet exchanges between two terrific actors. Roy and Nina are great too, and the recent Cradle of Filth reference was a nice touch. The band certainly enjoyed it judging by the tweet below, which was picked up by the metal magazine Kerrang!

And although it’s a horrible storyline, I did enjoy this conversation between Sally and Tim last week: “Your Dad’s been seeing escorts” … “What, is he after a new car?” Classic Corrie!

It feels normal to be watching Coronation Street again and it has provided me with comfort during the coronavirus pandemic. As noted by many on this site, three episodes a week is much more manageable. I’ve been able to miss a whole week and catch up in my dinner hour! And last night’s unintended two-day cliffhanger over Yasmeen's plea was truly gripping.

Corrie has been part of my lockdown routine in other ways too. It’s been tough balancing working from home with constant childcare, but I have really improved my Play-Doh skills since March. I’ve made many characters from children’s TV for my daughter and the odd politician for colleagues at work. I’ve now branched out into Corrie characters. Look, here’s Bet Lynch!

Another hobby I’ve taken up is colouring. In 2016, ITV published an official Coronation Street colouring book featuring classic scenes from the show’s history. Glenda, the esteemed editor of this Blog, chose the images and wrote the descriptions for the scenes, as well as the introduction to the book. In fact, I bought it for my Mum that year for Christmas and she loved relaxing with her Corrie colouring.

I was also given a copy as a very thoughtful Secret Santa present at work. After nearly four years, I have finally made a start on it with this picture of the Newton and Ridley sign on the side of the Rovers:

I can see why adult colouring is so popular and I look forward to tackling some more complex scenes. I’m going to stick with Coronation Street as I continue to adapt to the new normal in my life. Whatever happens, Corrie will always be a part of who I am, and I hope it will always be there.

My Mum loved hearing about my visits to the Corrie set with this Blog and she was the only person in the world who read all my posts! She’d say lovely but ludicrous things like “I can see you becoming a writer for Corrie one day.” I can’t, but if I were at the story conference in Salford Quays today, I’d support the approach of referencing coronavirus on screen. It can’t be ignored. Nor should it be.

That said, it would be nice if we could have a few things to smile about among the public health reminders and two-metre spaced queues outside Co-op. So, here are my top ten plots to pitch for the new normal in Weatherfield:

  • Compulsory face coverings on public transport. Hopefully, the residents of Coronation Street will continue to avoid non-essential travel (most of them work within walking distance of where they live, right?) but key workers such as nurse Aggie Bailey could be seen boarding the Weatherfield Wayfarer or alighting the tram at Weatherfield North in a mask. I’m not sure who the current Mayor of Weatherfield is, but I reckon a policy like this would need to be rolled out across Greater Manchester by Andy Burnham.

  • The Government needs to step up its efforts to get track and trace up and running. Perhaps a pilot in Weatherfield might be on the cards. Jenny Connor would be a good volunteer to test out this new technology – she knows a thing or two about tracking apps.
  • Talking of Jenny, how about a virtual Rovers pub quiz when the Connors return from France? They’ll have to do 14 days in quarantine first, mind.
  • While the Connors are self-isolating, Carla could use her negotiating skills to lead the campaign for a one-metre social distancing rule to safeguard the survival of the Rovers.
  • If Sean is currently furloughed from the Rovers and/or Underworld, then maybe he could broadcast a kitchen disco live from Eileen’s, a la Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
  • Kirk could stream lockdown gigs from his front room. Who wouldn’t want to tune in to see live acoustic versions of ‘Our Souls’ and ‘A Nice Pair of Puppies’ over Zoom?

  • Peter is a Barlow. He has a Barlow soul. I’d like to see him take up poetry but more successfully than his old man. I can picture Peter as a Mancunian punk poet: a cross between Tony Walsh and John Cooper Clarke, with a bit of Barry Kent from the Adrian Mole series circa 1985-87.

  • Here’s an idea – how about David stops running to escape from violent situations of his own making and simply runs for pleasure with Craig? While observing social distancing, obviously.
  • Let’s see Yasmeen’s trial conclude (via video-link?) with the book finally thrown at Geoff. Hard.
  • And please, let’s have some happiness. I’d like to see Evelyn and Arthur meet up at the Red Rec with flasks of tea and fold-up chairs for dates from a distance. That would be nice.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how Corrie continues in the Coronavirus Street era. I hope the return to filming is successful and that all cast and crew, and bloggers and commentators here, stay safe and well. Let me know what you’d like to see when Corrie returns. And if you’ve got any requests for Corrie characters sculpted from Play-Doh, please tweet them in my direction @mpleay!

I’d like to dedicate this blog post to the memory of my Mum, Glenys (1949-2020). She was a wonderful woman and although taken from us too soon, we were blessed to have her in our lives. I hope you can still watch Corrie, Mum, wherever you are.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 20 September

Greetings Corrie fans it’s Kelly here with your later than usual Friday night Corrie review.

It’s the day of the Bailey housewarming/surprise birthday party which they’ve inexplicably decided to have in the middle of the afternoon. A sound system has been set up, rum punch has been mixed and Aggie has made some appalling canapes. The only thing missing is the birthday boy who’s refusing to come home until mysterious Bailey child Dee-Dee arrives. When Aggie gets a text saying she’s not coming, Mary resorts to desperate measures by rushing over to the builder’s yard to tell Ed his wife has had a heart-attack!  Given her taste for the dramatic I was quite surprised at how tame this was. I half expected Mary to claim the whole house had been swept away in a freak tornado or that one of the family was being eaten by a shark.

Meanwhile back out on the (Mean) Street low-budget Robert DeNiro Gary is being ghosted by both Derek and Ryan. He finds out from Nick that Derek has agreed to a 25% rent reduction on the factory without his say so and then to add insult to injury spots him out on a date with Izzy. He gate-crashes their date in Speed Daal (anyone else wonder how Izzy got down the stairs in her chair?) and snarlingly tells Derek to finish with Izzy. When Izzy comes back to the table and sees Derek looking nervous, she encourages him to stand up to Gary saying that Derek is his boss and Gary needs him more. Will the gormless twit start to believe his own invented fantasy-life?

Back at the party Daniel arrives already preloaded on Corner Shop cheap vodka. And Bethany turns up looking like she’s based her look on 80’s Crystal Carrington. Hating the sympathetic looks he is getting from everyone Daniel gets stuck into the rum punch. As he dances badly with Jenny and Steve (who’s far more interested in embarrassing Emma by asking for selfies with Wethie County players), it becomes clear that Daniel’s totally bladdered. When Michael tries to get him to leave, he swings a punch at him, misses, and lands in the sound system. When Adam arrives to take him away Daniel breaks down and tells him he can’t cope.

Out in the Bailey backyard Bethany tries to kiss James and then throws a massive hissy fit when he knocks her back, leading him to blurt out that he’s gay. Taking the news in an extremely sensitive way she strops off back to the flat. Despite having done nothing wrong James goes to see her to explain. She accuses him of using her and pretty much shames him for not coming out. She also claims to have lots of gay friends. Not totally sure where she’s been hiding them for the last four years? I’ve seen her say hello to Billy twice a month, is she counting that? James tells her that he’s already subjected to prejudice from football fans for being black and being openly gay too would be a bridge too far. He’s also not sure how his dad would react.

Back with the uninvited Street residents Don Windass has a visit from Derek who tells him that he’d better be nice to him because he needs him to front the factory deal. Frustrated, Gary smashes a terrible mirror (because he’s dead hard and doesn’t care about seven years bad luck) and then threatens Ryan in full view of Jake. In other news Paul takes his frustration over Kel’s return out on a bemused Chesney. Sinead asks Beth to make her look beautiful in her coffin, reducing her aunt to tears and Shona finds out that Max has been bunking off school.

Finally, Crystal Carrington Bethany has realised that other people do exist. She returns to the party with reapplied eyeliner and benevolently offers to be James’ beard, because she doesn’t have a love life and there might be some perks to being a footballer’s girlfriend. As this is basically a self-serving act wearing a cloak of altruism, I can only assume that she’s been hanging out with Michelle the Queen of the Universe for far too long. As the two make their pact they are unaware that Michael has overhead them…

How do we see this arrangement working out Corrie fans? Let me know in the comments or catch me on twitter @mskelstar.
See you in two weeks. Byeeeeee

Coronation Street Episode Review, Weds 19th June 8.30pm

Robert lies to Michelle and tells her he's been jumped. Reluctant to call the police, of course, the celebrations now appear a little lacklustre but he's got the ring anyway and duly proposes. Michelle quickly gets into 'bride-to-be' mode whilst privately, Robert leaves Vicky a panicked voicemail.

Sarah heads over to Adam's flat and admits that she's told Gary the truth. Followed by Bethany, they break the news of their courtship. Bethany isn't pleased with her mothers latest conquest. In the woods, Gary starts disposing of Rick's lifeless body and steals the loan sharks car keys (RIP Rick).

Brian confronts Aggie and Claudia over the loud noise, before heading over to Roy's to dissect the findings of their investigations. A melancholic Roy can't quite believe the secret life his mother led. As talk turns to literary quotations, Wayne shows Roy a present that he gave him as a child. It adds pathos to a wonderfully burgeoning friendship. Is this the last we will see of Wayne?

Over a pint, Ken and Ed become great friends, whilst Claudia and Aggie bury the hatchet - once Ed agrees to fill that hole!

Meanwhile, Beth takes a photograph of Bertie and her skills are slightly improving, unlike her manners (she called Ken a patronising g*t - how rude!). She does, however, tell Ken that she's now entering The Gazette's photography competition.

Meeting Vicky at the Bistro, Robert is reluctant for her to terminate their child and tries hard to dissuade her. Narrowly avoiding Michelle's gaze, Robert appears to have averted a fuming Vicky informing Michelle of the conception.

Returning Bethany's car, it appears Gary has committed murder for the second time... (or the first as Rana's death was accidental).  What do we think of the streets newest murderer?

Coronation Street Episode Review, Weds 19 June 7.30pm

If you go down to the woods today be sure of a big surprise... or not, as Gary and Rick do battle again to find out who is Corrie's ultimate alpha-male!

Joking aside, a fresh grave has been dug but is anybody going inside it? As the camera pans across the desolate woods we are left to wonder.

Back on Coronation Street, Sarah is beside herself with worry at Gary's disappearance, and Tyler tells Robert the baby news. At the Bistro, the surprise proposal party is yet to start and with Robert obviously waylaid fighting with Tyler, Michelle's detective skills require little effort. Finding everybody 'hiding' and a 'comedy' celebration cake, it isn't long before she opens a box and a 'happy engagement' balloon pops out.

Roy's had Wayne and Brian run rings round him over Sylvia's mysteriously bequeathed jewellery. Now that Roy's investigation has proved his mother had an affair, can anything further come from Wayne and Brian's sleuthing? At the shop, Brian has somehow got hold of a box belonging to Roy, and the investigation appears to continue.

At the Baileys, Aggie's one noise women crusade against Claudia continues. With Aggie eagerly bashing Ernest's Bishop's piano, Claudia decides to delve into Ken's eclectic vinyl collection in hope of drowning out 'chopsticks'.

Arriving home at the same time, Ken and Ed decide not to disrupt their respective partners and head for a peaceful pint instead.

Before Sarah has had time to tell Bethany anything, Gary suddenly arrives at the Platts and he's on his own. Sarah decides it's time they had a talk.

Heading over to Roy's, Brian and Wayne have met a lady called Alice Parrot, who appears to have a connection to Sylvia's ring and ask to go upstairs to Roy's flat trying not to disturb Ken and Beth's photography class. Can a competition with the Gazette fire up Bethany's interest in the classes?

Back at Roy's flat, Alice tells Roy all about his mothers' affair with her father and Roy discovers a different side to his often cold and conceited mother.

Meanwhile, Michelle heartily accepts Robert's proposal but he struggles to mask his fight wounds.

Over a heart-to-heart, Sarah admits her affair with Adam and Gary takes the news badly. Struggling to accept that it's over, Gary pushes Sarah against a wall. Swiftly leaving, Gary takes Bethany's car and is soon back in the woods. It's dark, and he's got rubber gloves, which surely only leads to one conclusion. Has Gary killed Rick?!

Join me later today for a review of tonight's 8.30pm episode to find out!

Speak in a bit!.
