Coronation Street barmaid dies, age 85

The Express reports today that Coronation Street actress Barbara Ferris has died at the age of 85. Barbara Ferris first appeared on the cobbles as barmaid Nona Willis back in 1961, embarking on a career that spanned several decades.

Her full obituary is at The Guardian.

She died on May 23, and her cause of death is yet to be confirmed. Barbara's tenure on Coronation Street was brief; she played Nona for just 10 episodes before leaving the show, confessing that mastering the Lancastrian accent proved too challenging.

Actress Barbara Ferris appeared in Coronation Street for just 10 episodes as a barmaid at the Rovers Return between September - October 1961.  She played the character of Nona Willis.

Londoner Nona upset the Snug regulars on her first night working as a barmaid in the Rovers, admitting she had been an exotic dancer.

Ena Sharples didn't approve and wouldn't rest until Nona was dismissed two weeks later.
