Ben Price interview: Being part of the Platts is fantastic!

We see Nick ask Toyah to keep an eye on Sam this week, and he's not great with her, but when Nick returns, Toyah has managed to win Sam round. How does that make Nick feel?

He's very happy to see them getting on but he also recognises he can't put it on any partner to be the mum of Sam. He's the dad, he’s the parent, it's great that they're getting on again, but he's also conscious that he has to build a relationship with his son that is based on him being steady and being there for Sam. But it is lovely to see and I think it does stir feelings in him again.

Nick declares to Toyah that he still loves her, is it just something that he can't ignore despite all the damage it’s caused and awkwardness with Leanne and the family?

I think the way he sees it is that he's got one chance. He knows if he doesn’t say it now, then he’s always going to think I wish I'd said it. Him and Leanne had a lot of times over the years when they were together, not together. So this time he just decides to go for it.

How does Toyah respond to him?

She doesn’t respond that well, she’s not sure. I think Nick knows that she still has feelings for him, but it's certainly not her running straight back into his arms. This is an adult relationship, it’s not like they're 18, there is a lot to work out, this is her sister and that's also still in the mix.

Nick also offers Toyah the job of bistro manager. Is he not playing with fire there putting Toyah and Leanne back together in the work environment?

He doesn’t think Leanne will see it out but this is business and for Nick there’s part of him that just thinks it will be good for business, she’s good at the job. Toyah points out how awkward it’s going to be but I don't think Nick's that great at that stuff.

He seems to have managed to close off his feelings a bit more than Toyah and Leanne, is that his business brain?

That is a bit of Nick, he's good at compartmentalising his feelings. With his family, on the whole, Nick plays the middle ground between David and Gail, between Sarah and Audrey. With this I decided when I was playing it, no, he's done. Leanne did things that couldn’t be taken back, she doesn't hold back with Nick and now he’s decided I’m just going to say it how it is, I’m going to say how I really feel.

Nick and Leanne have so much history, have you enjoyed playing out this more adult version of their relationship?

It’s been great. I think it's important to keep it, no pun intended, within a family because that gives us history and that's what the show is about, playing history. Claire and Jane are fantastic to play against, they just go for it, no one is worrying about if their characters come out of this in a good light or not, we’re just playing the truth of the situation. So it's been incredibly good fun to play. I don’t know what the long term plan for Nick and Toyah was initially but it has become something and that's always the most exciting stuff when something develops organically.

At the same time as Nick is dealing with his own relationship, his mum has tipped up with another new one in Jesse. Nick is a bit more open than some of the other Platts to seeing what this is all about. Do you think that is because of his own experiences with Toyah?

He’s a bit more live and let live, if you like him then fine, there's been a few over the years and I don't think we need to worry about Jesse just yet. Nick has always thought, especially after his dad and all the men that have followed, why can't my mum be happy? Nick has never relied on his mum in the same way as David and Sarah, he’s seen it much more that he’s had to look after his mum. So Nick thinks go and live your life, it's alright, if he makes you happy then great.

Does he see Jesse as a decent guy?

He’s a bit of a clown, but compared with her other husbands then yeah he's alright. He's not nasty, he's not trying to rip her off, he might not be the best but Nick’s dad wasn't the best. She seems happy and that's alright for Nick. Gail and Audrey have both picked not great men at times but Jesse seems okay.

It means you’re getting to play lots of big Platt scenes again, are you enjoying those?

Yeah, I think that's where the show works best, when it's family. I’m biased but definitely when it's the Platts for me, when we're all together, arguing, and then come together as a family. Everyone wants to see that, we love doing it, that’s Coronation Street for me. I love being here and there are times when you are working with all the Platts and you just go, oh this is fantastic. Being with Helen, Sue, Jack, Tina, Julia, Paddy and Lucy coming back this is really where it’s at. We all have such good fun and you're very lucky if you can go to work and find that. Everyone comes up to you in the street to say they love the Platts and how lovely is that?
