Coronation Street - some thoughts on Tuesday evening

On Tuesday 9 July 2024 we were given the history of Lauren's disappearance and the missing months as Joel trotted out the most unbelievable lies in the world.  Amongst his pack of untruths we saw him exiting the flats with Bobby entering the flats and so there is another way into the flats apart from the front doors, a point which I raised in my comments last week and I can now put the record straight - here is the other entrance.  For the record Ian Kershaw wrote the episode and it was directed by Richard Lynn and Kevin Boyle.  However all television drama requires huge input from the entire team and the output on Tuesday was a superb reflection of the knowledge and skills which were displayed.  Well done everyone.

There is no Street tonight (12 July) so I thought I would have another look at Tuesday evening for the bits I missed first time around.

Talking of food Lauren - do you like sauce on your bacon butty?  Even after that clip she carried on adding sauce for another 2 - 3 seconds - that is a lot of sauce young lady.  But at least on white bread unlike Kirk.

By the way Lauren if you slide that bottom bolt to the left the door will open and you can leave so you do not get beaten to near death by Joel.  Note to the set team - these bolts need to be at top and bottom of the door and out of shot!

I particularly loved this - inside Joel has just unzipped Lauren's overcoat to confirm that she is pregnant and we went into the advert break with this shot.  Nicely done.

One advantage of subtitles is that they tell us what is playing on the radio and as Joel drove off leaving Lauren for dead that was what came on the radio!

One shot I missed when watching originally was the necklace - I knew he had picked it up in the flat and he must have put it in his pocked.  When he later has a melt down in the car the necklace later found by Hope is seen to slide out of his pocket onto the floor.  A loose end tied up!

For a number of minutes we listened at Joel recounted his actions after leaving the flat whilst the camera is tracking what he actually did! The pictures telling the truth and the words telling the lies - underlining the earlier assertion by Lauren that he is constantly lying to himself.  Lovely juxtaposition no doubt set up by the writing but envisioned by the directors.

Joel also told Lauren that his mother had an affair, his father became depressed and used young Joel as a punchbag - which Joel alleges his mother knew about.  Now we have met Joel's parents and I am sure that the mother does not look like the sort who would have an affair and the father does not look like a violent man - so I assume this is another set of lies.  If true would they still be together?

And I am pleased to say that Lauren is of the same opinion.  I admit that I did struggle how a (presumably) blood covered girl was able to get on a coach and get away - she herself said there was blood pouring from her head - and that she just kept running - and manage to beg some money so I will accept it but feel that it is just a little unrealistic.

And one final explanation needed Joel - how did you get those scratches on your face - just for the record for the next time you see Dee Dee!

For reference it was not quite a two-hander.  Roy, Nina, Dee Dee, Bobby, two random nurses (who spoke and were credited) and a random copper (who did not speak) also featured.  Fight arrangers were credited as Kate Waters and Renny Krupinski.

If things are back to normal I should be back here again next week.
