Simon Gregson interview: Steve attacks Jacob

How much does Steve know about Amy’s secret boyfriend prior to this week?

Steve hasn’t got a clue who it is. He has heard rumours that Amy has a secret boyfriend and someone has planted a seed in his and Tracy’s head that he is an older guy so Steve and Tracy think her boyfriend must be about 50 or 60 years old and they are going mad. Amy is 18 years old now but they are concerned because they think she is with someone much older.

Why do you think Tracy and Steve are so protective over Amy? Do you think it is because she has been through so much at such a young age?

I think, for Steve, it’s more the fact that she might turn out like Tracy! Steve thinks, “Oh God, if she turns out like Tracy, God help us all!”

Do you think Amy is more like Steve or Tracy?

I think she is a mixture of the two. I think she has the sensibility of Steve with the attitude of Tracy.

Tell us about the moment that Steve and Tracy hear that Amy has been spiked?

Steve is beside himself about Amy being in hospital because it is not long after he has been to Oliver’s grave. Steve feels like all he does is let his children down and his head's a mess about the whole thing. Steve is not in a good place with everything that is going on.

What does Steve know about Jacob? Why does he conclude that Jacob is responsible for Amy being spiked?

Steve knows all the stuff that Jacob put Simon and Leanne through just after Oliver died. He knows that Jacob is bad, bad news. When Jacob turns up, Steve gets wind that it may not have been Jacob and that Jacob probably saved Amy’s life but there is still absolutely no way that he wants his daughter involved with a little trouble-maker like him.

Describe the moment Steve punches Jacob in the hospital corridor.

Jacob starts going on about Oliver and that is just a red rag to a bull for Steve so he hits him! Steve thinks that Jacob shouldn’t even have mentioned Oliver’s name and all the emotions are fresh in his mind because he has just been to Oliver’s grave. Steve’s head is in a bad place and he tells Jacob to leave. When Jacob doesn’t leave, Steve loses his temper and decks him. The guy is bad news, he was a drug dealer and he’s done some terrible things, putting Leanne through absolute hell. Leanne is the mother of Steve’s dead son and the last thing this kid should be doing is mentioning Oliver. Steve feels he is just being a protective dad.

When Steve warns Jacob to stay away from Amy and tells Amy the same, does he believe that this will be the end of their relationship?

Steve tells Amy that he may be telling her he is a sweet lad but someone who did what he did to Simon and Leanne won’t ever change. He knows that Amy has got her own mind and that, because she is 18 years old, she can do what she likes but he is still concerned. He just wants the best for his daughter. I think he just wants, for once in his life, a stress-free time for a while!

What’s Steve’s reaction to Amy defying his wishes?

Steve understands that Amy is a woman now and that she has her own mind but at the same time, she is his daughter and he is upset because he wants what is best for her. Steve believes that what is best for Amy is ending the relationship with Jacob but maybe he will be proved wrong.

If Amy and Jacob continue their romance, how will this affect the Barlow family?

It will definitely cause fractures within the family, especially with Simon, Leanne and possibly Peter.

What advice would you give to Steve in this situation?

My advice would be to go on holiday for a very long time and have a break! I think what he has to do is just watch it from the wings and be there for Amy if needs be, that’s the only thing he can do.
