Did you always know you were going to come back to Corrie for this latest stint?
Yeah, we always knew. They were always keen to keep bringing me in. And so it was never closing the door fully on Laura, I knew something was coming. And when they pitched this storyline to me, I was like, “oh, my days, this is just too good to turn down, I can't not.” Oh, it's a good one, it's a corker!
What brings Laura back this time?
Basically, Laura has found out she's got stomach cancer, and she's found out she's terminal. And within that time, she's done a lot of soul searching. And as a mum, it's taken something so tragic to happen to herself to make her realise what's important, and that her world is Kelly. She wants to make amends for all the wrongdoings. She doesn't know how much time she's got, and how long she's going to be around. But in all this time she's there, she wants to sort things out with her daughter, and she needs to get everything back on track.
What happens when she tracks down Kelly?
She starts looking for Kelly, and the first place she heads to is Coronation Street, of course. Initially she bumps into her with Stu, at Roy's Rolls, and Kelly doesn't want anything to do with Laura. So Laura’s running after her, there's a lot of like, I want to sort this, I've got something to say. But she can't. And then eventually she comes to Speed Daal, and Gary and Maria are there. Laura finds out that Gary and Maria are looking after Kelly, that she's living with them. They can see that Laura's a bit off, she's not fully herself. But I think originally people think that she's messing around, playing another card to try and get her daughter's attention. And she just blurts it out, that she's dying, that she's got stomach cancer.
Does Kelly believe her?
For Kelly it’s a bit like, is this true? Is it not? What's going on? But I think she very quickly realises that all is not well. There's actually some really beautiful, emotional scenes between the pair of them where Laura tells her how much she wants to be with her. She needs her in her life, and how she wants to make up for everything that she's done wrong. There’s some really emotional scenes between them where they start connecting as mother and daughter. And there's some lovely elements of light and shade as well, where they start laughing – it takes time for that to kick in, but it does. Laura thinks that's the last time she might ever see her daughter, so she's obviously very emotional, saying her goodbyes to her, like she might never see her again. Until Kelly decides that she's going to come and start looking after her…
What happens next?
Laura’s got this bedsit, oh, it's amazing this bedsit. It's so funny, it's typical Laura style, there's food everywhere, bras all over the place, and Kelly shows up, and she starts looking after her mum, and they start spending time together. She's doing a bit of cooking here and there. I mean, they're microwave meals, but Kelly's doing her best. And there's still resistance between the pair of them, Kelly's got a lot of reasons not to want to go back straightaway to her mum to be taken in, because of what's happened in the past. But that slowly breaks down, and the bond is there between them both again. Which is so lovely.
Can you give us any hints about what’s to come from Laura?
There’s so much with Laura while she's back – she’s now on a mission that she wants to find out what's happened to Rick. She wants to find out what's gone on. And all I can say is there's gonna be absolute fireworks, I've read some of the scenes, and it is mental –the ups and downs, and what's gonna come to fruition is epic. This is the reason I wanted to come back. So, most definitely it's going to be sitting on the edge of your seat moment. That's all I’m gonna say. It’s an absolute belter.
How do you feel about your time on Corrie eventually coming to an end?
I think for me, it's bittersweet – I guess Laura could have stayed around. But then what would have happened? She’d be up to her old tricks again. Every actor wants to get their teeth into something so gritty, and there's always twists and turns. For me, I'm excited for what's to come. I'll be so sad when I leave, because obviously, I've made so many bonds with everybody off set. It does sound extremely cliche when people say it's a family, but it genuinely is. I'll miss that, but we'll all still stay in touch. And I've still got quite a lot of time in the show yet.

I wonder if Laura wanting to find out what happened to Rick will lead to the truth coming out about his death. If so, that's a 'secret' that's been a long time coming out. We've all been waiting for this one to come to light!
