One of the reasons that I started this Coronation Street Blog back in December 2007 was as somewhere to put my Coronation Street weekly updates.  I've been writing them since 1995, week in, week out. It's my little bit of creative writing, once a week, combining my love of writing with my love of our favourite soap.

And now all of the Corrie weekly updates since 1995 are stored in one handy page at Corrie.net

Some weeks are missing, or covered by other writers, when I'm away on holiday. And there's a huge gap in 2007 when I was forced, due to an, er, conflicting Corrie commitment (that's all I'm going to say!) to give up the weekly updates for a while.

So indulge in some nostalgia and wallow in words from Weatherfield, back through the 90s and the noughties.

Hello everyone. For those of you who have been with me from the very start of writing these updates, you’ll know we’ve been together, week in, week out, for over 18 years.  I started writing these weekly updates back in 1995 for th’internet and they’ve usually, more or less, been emailed to you every Monday or Tuesday reporting the week’s events on the cobbles ending with the episodes on a Monday night. Well, 18 years is a long time for anyone to stick to a routine so I hope you’ll forgive me for changing things a little.  I’m now going to be writing and sending the weekly updates over a weekend covering the week’s events from Monday to Friday inclusive.  And so without any further ado, here we go with this week's Coronation Street update

Baby Windass-McIntyre-possibly-Duckworth was born this week when Tina went into labour early in the Rovers Return. Fortunately for Tina she was rushed to hospital in time to deliver her premature baby boy in safety although he’s now spending time in a special baby unit.  And it was also fortunate for Stella that Tina got to hospital in time. Well, you wouldn’t want waters breaking all over the new fabrics in the refurbished pub, would you?  Anyway, Tina and Izzy are in tears at the sight of their new baby but Izzy tells Gary she wants nowt to do with him after she finds out he tried to kiss Tina on the soft furnishings the other week.  She even bans him from seeing the baby, but he sneaks in when Izzy’s not there and Tina lets Gary see his son.  It’s very intense and emotionally charged, and when Izzy arrives at th’ospickle to find Gary gazing at the baby, she chucks a mental and it’s left to Tina to step in to sort things out. She tells them to sort themselves out and bans them both from seeing the baby until they do so.  But as Izzy simmers with anger at Gary, he pleads to fix things with Izzy. “Fix it?” she yells at him “It’s not a poxy vase. It’s us. It’s my heart!”, But it’s Tina they should both be keeping an eye on as she starts developing a bond with her baby, their baby.

Sally’s been wonderful this week.  She gets tipsy in the Rovers, drinking alone and bemoaning the fact she hasn’t got a fella.  In fact she gets so tipsy that she tells Norris:  “You’re a silly little man. A nasty little elf. A nasty little bald elf.” Which is fair enough, I’d say, and then to Steve: “You’re a nice bald elf,” which is also pretty spot on. 

Jenna and Sophie help Sally create an online profile for an internet dating site and then go shopping with her for new clothes to help her create the persona she wants to project –  dynamic, mysterious and witty – rather than the way she’s currently perceived – beans meanz tea.

Over at Underworld, there’s stolen silk shenanigans going on. Rob and Tracy stole the silk from Carla last week and have it holed up in a lock-up.  Carla does some ringing around and finds out from (and I love this next bit for both the alliteration and the mention of my home city) Sandra at Saunders of Sunderland – that a woman has been on the phone to her offering some silk at a knock down price.  Carla tells Sandra to arrange a time and place to meet the woman, who is of course Tracy and Carla turns up instead when Rob’s expecting Sandra at Saunders of Sunderland’s Manchester rep. In exchange for not dobbing Rob into the cops, Carla tells her brother that she wants his shares of Underworld back. “Sign up or go down,” she growls, proving she’s got the size of balls that her brother can only dream of. So, not only has Rob fallen out with his sister, lost his job and his factory shares, he also gets short shrift from Deirdre when Tracy takes him home for a spot of tea and telly. Deirdre’s not best pleased when she finds out what’s going on. She tells Tracy: “Get him outta my house!” names him Flash Harry and calls him scum. I love Deirdre when she’s on fire like that.

And finally this week, Stella and Karl go to dinner at Dev’s. Stella thinks she’s being matey to a friend and a neighbour while Karl’s conscience tries, and fails, to give him a hard time over sharing a bottle of Freshco red with the husband of the woman he murdered in the Rovers fire.

Tyrone’s free from his trial and torment after crazy Kirsty crashes the courtroom with baby Ruby in her arms as Tyrone takes the stand. “He’s not a monster!” She tells a packed court room “I am!” The trial’s declared null and void and Kirsty’s held for perjury and perverting the course of justice. Back home, Tyrone’s nervous about facing those on the Street he once thought of as friends. those who believed Kirsty’s word over his.  Ooh, there’s a lot a lot of saying sorry to do, and Julie and Eileen try to do it first.  It takes a gentle nudge from Roy to ‘turn a page in the book of life’ to get Tyrone to think on about forgiving and forgetting.

Paul the fireman suffers the death of work colleague Toni worse than the death of his wife. Remember her? The one with Alzheimer’s Disease? The woman he was married to? The woman he’s forgot? And now he can’t sleep, he can’t eat, he’s having problems at work and he takes them all out on Eileen. I’d be having a word with myself if I were her and I’d chuck him and his hideous beige jacket out. 

At Roy’s Rolls, Sylvia starts eating cannabis brownies after Stan from the 1o’clock club gets her hooked. She tells him she’s eating the space cakes to relieve the pain in her wrist but as she’s the only one in Roy’s Rolls who knows what’s going on with the special cakes Stan brings in, she’s a little concerned when Anna tells her she’s just sold three of them – to Rita, Norris and Mary. Dennis manages to get the cakes back before they’re eaten, which was a shame as a bite of dope could well have shut Norris up.

St Ella’s released from th’ospickle and moves into Kevin’s after he supposedly moves in with Sally although he’s really been written out for a few months. Karl and St Ella grow close, blah blah blah and Jason’s not best pleased.   

Poor Sunita’s still lying in her bed with tubes all over her and she’ll die next week. Until then, Karl tries to pin the Rovers blaze on to her by dropping his keys into her hospital bedside unit where the cops conveniently find them and Sunita becomes suspect number one for setting the Rovers on fire.  My recent experience of someone close to me going into hospital included their belongings being inventoried on entry – and discharge.  I hope the Corrie writers have remembered this happens and then Karl will finally get collared for the blaze. 

And finally this week Chesney’s still in bits over Katy and Ryan and he deals with it the only way he knows how. He gets stonking drunk in the Rovers and tries to chat up Eva who tells him to come back when he’s a little more sober, older and taller.

Big story this week has got to be Yasmeen finally seeing Geoff for the nasty piece he is. She discovers his password for the laptop and rifles through his emails only to find that Geoff’s been using an escort service. Wait until she finds out that he’s been using her money to pay for it, too! Yasmeen can’t find any evidence of Geoff booking a hotel in Spain for Zeedan’s wedding, as he said he had. Finally… Yasmeen confronts Geoff and in a twisted scene, Geoff begs Yasmeen not to leave him, he crumples, deflates and you just know in that instant there’s something not right in his mind, in his head, in his very being. And still you want to kick him in the nuts. Anyway, Yasmeen tells him she’s leaving for Spain on her own. She packs her bag and tries to leave but Geoff stands in the doorway with his arm blocking her way.

Elsewhere, David goes off the rails this week reeling from the news that Shona wants a divorce. He goes drinking and gets mugged by a gang of lads who pull a knife on him. Then he speaks to Imran who gives him free legal advice and tells David that he and Shona can’t divorce as they’ve not been married a year yet. I didn’t know that, did you? Every day’s a school day! David apologies to Alina for using her and the two of them agree to be friends.

Over at Stillwaters, Ken’s incensed to be fined by Charles for professional cleaning of the carpet after Eccles’ little mistake. So when Ken finds the usual cleaner doing the work instead of the professional company he’s been charged for, her tackles Charles who doesn’t like it one bit. He likes it even less when Ken sets himself up as a challenger to Charles’ authority in the retirement community. Let’s get ready to rumble.

Some good news this week at the hospital when baby Aled gets a hearing aid and his little face lights up at the sound of Gemma and Chesney’s voice. A lovely little scene.  Bernie’s doing her best around the house but it’s clearly not enough and Cathy takes her to task for skiving when she should be giving Gemma much more help.

Emma and Seb split up over Alina and Emma moves in to No. 1 with Steve, Tracy and Amy. However, Emma’s going to be left home alone when the Barlow’s head to Scotland to visit Beth and Daniel and little Bertie who are up there on the grief retreat.

Greetings and welcome to another Corrie weekly update.  I’m off on my jollies soon, so the next three weeks worth of words from Weatherfield will be brought to you by Richard Whitbread.  And so, without any further ado, here we go with this week’s Coronation Street update.

Paul leaves this week after Eileen, well, I’m not really sure what happened. He tells her he loves her, she tells him she loves him, then he packs his bags and goes to live in a caravan on Dave’s drive.  Eileen then spends three episodes sniping at everyone who tries to cheer her up for being single again. There’s just no pleasing that woman. It’s like she’s got a default switch to mardy old cow and woe betide anyone who tries to tweak that setting.

Speaking of which, isn’t Todd coming back soon?

Sally spends time with Tim but when he treats her to breakfast in Roys Rolls, she’s not best pleased when he rushes out and leaves her to pay. Anna smirks behind the counter, she knows what Tim’s like.  Any hopes Sally has of a life of romance with Tim are quickly dashed when he rushes out for a pint with Jason rather than dining in with Sally, Sophie and her lesbian lover Jenna with a home-cooked shepherd’s pie.   Determined to show off what she’s got, Sally decides to throw a garden party and when she invites Anna and Owen, Anna pretends they’re already having a BBQ at the very same time as Sal’s soiree.  It’ll be war, the battle of the BBQs, just you mark my words.

In th’ospital, Nick’s breathing on his own now and Tina figures out that it was David who put his brother in the coma.  Anyone else miss Nurse Platt? No? Just me, then. 

Over at Roy’s Rolls, with Roy and Hayley away on holiday, Sylvia abandons ship too. Anna finds a note from Sylvia saying she’s gone to see her sister and will be away for some time. This was a  hurriedly-written scene to cover that the actress who plays Sylvia isn’t well and has taken time away from the soap.  Let’s hope she’ll be back very soon.

Meanwhile in the cab office, Fat Brenda’s on one of those milkshake diets, using the milkshake to wash down the bacon barms. Attagirl.

And finally this week, Chesney dumps Sinead and takes Katy back. But it’s not really Katy he wants, it’s little Joseph he misses, not his strumpet of a wife. Ah, Katy, Katy, with your pointless storylines and your pretty hair. Let’s hope Chesney sees sense soon.

In all the years of writing the Corrie weekly updates I have only once before struggled with trying to condense a major storyline into a paragraph or two.  It was when Hayley died. And now I’m having trouble trying to give Deirdre Barlow the send-off she deserves wrapped up in a few words of a weekly update.  Deep breath … and here we go …
 

At No.1 Ken and Tracy prepare for Deirdre’s return on her 60 birthday. There’s a party planned in the Rovers, streamers hung and a cake bought. Ken’s in a suit and tie and Tracy’s having her hair done. There’s a knock at the door and it’s Bev Unwin, Deirdre’s friend she’s been staying with for the last few months. Ken expected Bev to be bringing Deirdre home with her but it’s sad news that Bev brings, the saddest news possible. Deirdre has died on her 60th birthday while sitting in Bev’s garden. It was a brain aneurysm …sudden, shocking. Bev hands over Deirdre’s glasses to Ken: “I didn’t know what to do with these,” she tells him. Neither does Ken. He takes them into the kitchen and sobs.
It’s been very emotional watching the episodes this week as news of Deirdre’s death filters around the Street. The cast’s emotions are plan to see, their eyes filling with real tears as they plan Deirdre’s funeral and talk about what could have been. Ken breaks down in the ginnel and it’s Steve who hugs him and walks him around the block. Tracy’s in bits but never loses her nasty edge, cutting Liz short when she offers to help.  Amy cuddles her mum when she finds out grandma Deirdre has died while Simon retreats into himself, trying not to let the upset of the news affect him too much. How much more bad news and people dying on him can this little lad take?  Emily sheds tears in the Rovers as Rita comforts her and Liz rings the bell in the Rovers to announce the sad news. As the Rovers regulars drink a toast to Deirdre in the pub, a gust of wind blows the door open, right on cue.  And then it’s time to plan the funeral. Tracy finds an old tin containing a letter from Deirdre outlining the kind of funeral she wants.  It’s to include red wine and Frescho’s best ham, Nina Simone singing ‘I’m feeling good’ and a short service so that smokers aren’t left gagging for a fag.

Elsewhere this week, all else pales into insignificance and the other storylines have felt nothing more than an intrusion into what should have been, in my opinion, centered exclusively on Deirdre and the Barlows.

We therefore had to suffer the tedium of Callum as Kylie tries to wind him up so that Sarah will see Callum for the comedian he is. It’s a plan that doesn’t work and Callum is left to torment us all another day, sadly.

Even Roy, who I adore, seemed at odds this week with the sadness of the Barlow household.  He helps Cathy start to declutter her house and it soon becomes clear that it’s going to be a very long and slow process indeed. She can’t be rushed, Roy knows that, but even Roy’s patience is starting to wear thin. 

But Roy’s got more on his mind when he returns to the café to find gambling and drinking going on at Roy’s Rolls.  It’s Carla who’s set up a poker game with Erica, Nick and Lloyd. Roy’s not best pleased and tells Carla she could have cost him his license.  She stays out all night gambling in a casino in town and Roy gently admonishes her for coming home in the early hours. He knows what time it was, he tells her, because the shipping forecast was on the radio.  She replied with: “Shipping forecast… Shiraz… whatever gets you through the night, Roy.”  Carla’s retreat into gambling gets worse and she starts online gambling at work. She’s still blaming herself for setting fire to Victoria Court and has the deaths of two people, that she didn’t kill, much on her mind.

Leanne tells Dan she’s going to out him to Liz as the fella who beats up prostitutes.  This seemed like a good plan until Dan warned her that if she told Liz anything, he’d tell Simon that Leanne used to work as a call girl. Leanne decides to stay schtum, for now.
