Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 3rd Feb 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Was anybody surprised by Nina and Asha coupling up? I called it a while ago (in my head, no spoilers here) and I suspect that may be why Corrie aged the twins by a year. Things certainly do move fast in Weatherfield, by the end of this hour of drama, Dev has shrugged off his shellshock at Asha’s news, and following wise words from Roy, seems duty-bound to doting parenting.

I do like Nina and Asha, a modern love story for the young ‘uns is just what the show needs.

Lesser said for Jenny and Johnny, whose marriage though parted by prison, seems to have Daisy, and MS, tearing it apart. Taken to the Bistro tonight by Daisy, the Rovers landlady catches the eye of a local suitor. Is this the end of another Corrie relationship? In the beginning, I liked J & J a lot, but maybe Daisy has a point?

With Dev sidetracked by Asha, it was good to see Adi take over the shop boss role by giving Evelyn her PDI. As expected, Evelyn accentuates the comedic premise and dished out acerbic wit at a rate of knots. All the hallmarks of Damon Rochefort, who was tonight's show writer.

Drowning in estrogen, I feel this Tyrone household female overload is for comedy effect, too? I was hoping Ty would lust over Alina like some modern-day Jack Duckworth, but I guess we live in different times. It does seem fitting then when he sources the flat back from Debbie, for Alina to move out. Also fitting that Fiz and Ty row about it, just like Jack and Vera would have!

For me, Leanne and Simon as a duo, on their own, are scene-for-scene perfection. The devotion Simon has shown to his flaky parents has caused him a wealth of upheaval recently, but is his luck changing? Tonight, after his delivery bike's stolen, his new pal at the chippy is quick to help him out again. Introduced just this past week, is the new character what the young lad needs, or is he a precursor to more trouble for the already troubled teen? Kelly’s warning falls on deaf ears, so that could be a clue.

Elsewhere in the episodes; Billy and Paul’s relationship is in turmoil following Todd’s scheming.

BILLY PUSHES PAUL TO THE BRINK Billy orders Paul to clear up the mess in the flat while he collects Summer from hospital. When Paul reveals to Todd that Will was responsible, Todd pretends to be shocked. As Billy and Paul fuss over Summer, she senses the tension between them. Paul does his best to play it down, aware that his relationship is hanging by a thread. Billy rows with Paul for getting embroiled with Will and so endangering Summer’s life. Is their relationship over?

ASHA AND NINA ADDRESS THEIR RELATIONSHIP Asha calls in the cafe and suggests to Nina they meet up later in Victoria Garden. Nina tells her it’s a date. Dev returns home to find Asha dressed up to the nines and assumes she’s got a date with a boy. When Asha reveals that her date is actually Nina, Dev’s poleaxed.

SIMON LOSES THE POWER TO DEAL WITH THINGS ALONE Late for his shift, Simon dumps his bike outside the chippy. But after a chat with Jacob, he’s horrified to realise his bike has been stolen.

ELSEWHERE When Aadi announces that he’ll be conducting her performance review at lunchtime, Evelyn’s seriously unimpressed. Dev warns Aadi not to wind her up. Evelyn advises Tyrone to get shot of Alina as there are already too many women in the house.

TODD FINDS THE TASTE OF SUCCESS IS BITTER-SWEET Paul’s anger turns to despair as Billy asserts that he has to put Summer first. Surveying the damage he’s caused Todd feels a pang of guilt. Finding Paul alone in the Rovers, Todd masks his discomfort as Paul confides in him about how it looks like he’s lost everything and only has himself to blame for letting Will into their lives.

IS ASHA MOVING TOO FAST? Asha invites Nina to No.7 for tea and assures her Dev will be cool with it. When Dev tells Roy of Asha and Nina’s burgeoning relationship, Roy’s unfazed and reckons Dev should be flattered that Asha felt able to share something so personal with him. Dev does his best to make Nina feel welcome at No.7.

SIMON HOPES THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER A downbeat Simon confides in Jacob that without his bike he’ll lose his job and he really needs the money. When Simon shows Kelly the new bike that Jacob has lent him, Kelly’s unimpressed.

ELSEWHERE An awkward Tyrone returns home and tells Alina that he’s arranged with Debbie for her to move back into the salon flat. Alina packs her bag and whilst Fiz glares at a guilty Tyrone. At the bistro, Jenny’s flattered when a hot looking bloke checks her out. Devious Daisy nips over and asks him for his phone number.

Here are the major storylines for the week ahead on Coronation Street, all wrapped up nicely in 50 words or less.

Monday 8 to Friday 12 February

Debbie and Kevin get locked in a fridge, Leanne struggles to move on, Shona helps David as No. 8 goes under the hammer, Johnny starts hallucinating, Gail makes funeral plans for Ted and Tyrone falls for the oldest trick in the book.

Corona-tion Street

With news that due to the pandemic, Corrie is taking a break to rewrite storylines, I'd like to moot a few more Corona-relevant storylines.

My suggestions (you can have these for free Iain MacLeod: I don't need a storyliner fee):

First of all, I realise that I am the most pedantic pedant in Pedantshire but characters taking their masks off as they enter a building is driving me bonkers. Given that a) the Street is very influential on the general public and b) there are people who will use any excuse not to wear a mask (I don't mean the genuinely exempt but the "you can't tell me what to do" eejits) then the Corrie cast need to be following the rules as an example. I know it covers up Stevie Mac's gurns but this is a price we all have to pay.

Aggi contracts Covid and ends up in Kate Oates Memorial. Everyone is mega worried, but she recovers to full health, not before Michael hears Grace talking on the phone saying she hopes Aggi dies. He splits up with his her and we never see Ms Vickers ever again.

Maria has no money since the barbers/salon had to close (and Gary was imprisoned) and so accepts an illegal hairdresser gig and gets into Big Troub.

Aadi and Simon go to an illegal rave (off screen) and get arrested. Dev blows a gasket. Leanne and Peter shrug listlessly. Eva does a Zoom call with Leanne apologising that she can't be there for her sis during her bereavement but there is a travel ban and people can't be rushing off to Europe willy-nilly (note: book Cath Tyldesley. Pay her anything she wants!).

Mary gets really into jigsaws, leaving them in the living room. Eileen accidentally knocks one off the table, leading her to spend the next twelve hours trying to get it back the way it was.

There's an outbreak of Covid in the prison and all non-violent crims are moved to an empty hotel. Johnny suffers with the isolation, but Gary is living the life of Riley, emptying the minibar and running up a large phone bill ringing his mum and Faye.

Rita, Ken and Audrey get their jabs. Roy signs up as a vaccine administrator. Beth declares herself an anti-vaxxer until Roy talks her 'round. Dr Gaddass gets an OBE for her tireless work putting up with an awful lot, let's be honest.
