Peter Ash interview - Paul Foreman to be diagnosed with motor neurone disease

Since being hit by the Underworld van, Paul Foreman has been struggling with the mobility of his hand. As time progresses, Paul and his loved ones become increasingly more concerned. Eventually going to see a neurologist, Paul is told in April it is likely he is suffering from motor neurone disease (MND) - a fatal illness that affects the brain and spinal cord. Paul's diagnosis is confirmed later in the month.

As Paul's world is turned upside down, we chatted to Peter Ash about how Paul copes with his diagnosis.

Since his accident Paul has been worried about how long he is taking to recover. But do you think he has ever worried it might be more serious than nerve damage?

At that point, it’s all about him just wanting to get back to work and get earning again. I don’t think he has any idea that it’s going to be something so serious. For the longest while, he just thinks it’s a trapped nerve  that was caused by the bike accident that he had on the street. But, yeah, it does turn out that the actual problems in his hand is actually nothing to do with that.

What goes through his mind when the consultant tells him he may have MND. Does he know what that is?

He gets informed that they are going to be testing for MND. Paul doesn’t really know what that is, so has to ask a bit. The consultant explains these would be the symptoms if it is MND, and I think from that point, he just goes into shock, really. Also, in his own mind, Paul isn’t looking positive on it at all. He kind of thinks he’s got it, like, he’s not been told for definite yet, he’s been told they’re testing for it, but in Paul’s head, as far as he’s concerned, that’s what it is. I think it makes sense, then, where he’s like, “Actually, yeah, this isn’t just a normal injury, there’s something else going on.” When it sinks in a bit, it turns his whole world upside down.

Why doesn’t he tell his loved ones about what the consultant has said?

He does say that he wants to be sure first before he tells anyone, which is understandable. But then also, he’s been worried so much lately about his money problems, he’s got his sister’s wedding coming up, which is going to be a big, stressful event. It feels like there’s too much going on in everyone’s life at the moment to unload that on them. He kind of bottles it up and keeps it in for the meantime.

How long have you known about this storyline, and how did you feel when you find out Paul was to be diagnosed with an illness which ultimately will lead to his death and you leaving the show?

I think I was called into Iain’s office late last year. He said, “We’ve got this very big storyline for you, unfortunately, it does mean an eventual exit.” So I had mixed feelings, obviously. I mean, I’ll be sad to leave the show. It’s been such an amazing job, I’ve met fantastic people. But at the same time, I’m quite happy to be involved in such a powerful storyline that hopefully will bring awareness to MND, so a double-edged sword.

What research have you done to prepare to Paul’s story?

The MND Association have been a great help to us. They’ve been giving us all the information we need. When I go through my scripts, and there’s a new symptom, I’ll check in with them. Everyone here has been great with that, with the help and support and research.

Do you feel a responsibility playing someone with MND?

Yeah, massively. Especially when you’re playing a character with an illness or a condition, there’s so much responsibility to get it right, not to cheapen it, to represent it properly because we act it, but there are people watching it who are living with it. It is very important to get it right and be spot on with it and sensitive.

How have you found playing the physical effects of MND?

So far, I’ve been eased into it because it just starts in Paul’s hand, but I’m very aware that as time goes on and as the symptoms progress, it will get a lot more technical. So I’m sure as the symptoms pile up, I’m going to speaking a lot more with the MND Association to make sure we get it all right. It’s quite a journey we’ll be going on.

What do you hope we’ll achieve by exploring this?

Again, just hoping it brings awareness to the condition and the general public can see what people go through on a daily basis who live with this. Also, it’s about the loved ones of the person as well because it affects so much of their life and their families’ lives. It’s a tough thing to take on, obviously, just hoping that people can understand the condition more and bring awareness to it.

Peter Ash: "Saint and Sinner, Paul and Billy are cute!"

There's a great interview in this week's Inside Soap magazine, with Peter Ash who plays Gemma's brother Paul.

The questions have been posed to Peter by readers of the magazine, always the best way, I think!

Asked about Paul and Billy's romance, Peter says: "I think it's cute. It was unexpected when my character first came back into it, because Billy and Paul were quite standoffish with each other. But I think it's really sweet and there is genuine affection there, it's not just Paul using him to get what he can. They're very different, but it's a nice dynamic. The saint and the sinner!"

He also says that he'd love more scenes with David Neilson, who plays Roy Cropper. "Because he's a phenomenal actor," says Paul. "I'd love to have a plot with him - Paul and Roy would be a very unlikely pairing though."

You can read the full interview in Inside Soap magazine, in the shops today.

Paul will getting involved in a theft storyline next week, you can read more on that here.

Gemma Winter arrived in Weatherfield as a rough diamond and she had to work hard to be accepted. As is usual on the street, Rita was the one who saw the good in this character and she has become the mother that Gemma never had. She tried to run the Rovers and failed but now has a 'sister' in Jenny and is part of a family.

She has a best friend in Chesney and it's clear that they both want something more and things look really rosy for Gemma. But, now her twin brother Paul has rocked up - her very foundations might be ripped from beneath her feet.

Paul, played by the brilliant Peter Ash is a breath of fresh air for so many reasons. He has instantly made an impact and you can see why. Many people recognise the actor from Footballer's Wives and theatre goers recognise from him War Horse and fringe productions.

The actor is great at convincing you that Paul is a likable lad about town. And writing him as a close confidante of the local vicar (and far more, very soon) is very canny. This offers him protection and a second chance, but in the meantime he has many secrets about Gemma which he is going to use as a bargaining tool.

Add to the equation that he is about to have a fling with Billy and suddenly we are in a world where stereotypes are being subverted and this is where great drama comes from.

The only downside for me is that this leaves Sean on the shelf again. I would love him to meet someone, instead of hanging around Liz and Eileen listening to their tales of woe about their love lives. Give him one instead!

Peter Ash is a real grafter and I have seen him in many plays in Manchester and it is great to see him invited back to Corrie following his debut a while back in prison scenes with David.

The writers are on a roll at the moment and I think the Paul/Gemma rivalry is going to be a strong story for fans to get their teeth into. Throw in a vicar who believes in helping people like Shona and getting them settled within the community and you have the recipe for some great scenes, drama and comedy over the coming months.

Welcome to Weatherfield Peter and I hope you stick around for a while yet.

Peter Ash Interview: Gemma's brother turns up in Weatherfield

How did you feel when you got the call asking you to come back to play Paul (David’s cell mate) after filming a few episodes in 2018, were you shocked? Did you ever expect to return?
No I had no idea at all, I was over the moon to do the little bit I did earlier this year with David in the prison, so when I got a call to check my availability I couldn’t believe it. As a Mancunian actor it’s a dream job.

How did you react when you then heard that Paul is actually Gemma’s brother?
At first I thought I’d just be back for a few episodes but when I heard it was longer than that and that Paul is actually Gemma’s twin brother it was amazing. It’s all going really well and I’m enjoying it massively. Dolly’s done some cracking work on the show making the character her own so to come in as her brother is great. We’ve got some lovely bits together. People keep saying there’s a real resemblance between us which is great, I’m really happy with the role.

So why does Paul come to the street?
Initially he comes looking for David. He’s done a bit of time inside, he’s been in and out a fair bit in his life, but during this last stint he met David. I think through David he’s learnt that Gemma lives nearby but he doesn’t let on to that. At first it just looks like he’s here searching for work, he asks David for a job in the salon, David can’t help but he hooks him up with Billy who manages to get him a job working in Underworld which is great.

What does Paul think of Billy when he first meets him?
When they first meet Paul is quite standoffish, Billy’s a vicar and not the usual sort of person he’d mix with. But when David takes him round to Billy’s looking for a job he surprises him, he hooks him up with Carla and gets him the job at Underworld. Then there’s a bit of intrigue there and Paul starts to look at Billy differently.

Is there a spark there?
There’s definitely a spark between them, Paul’s very intrigued by this vicar. He’s very openly friendly whereas Billy’s a bit more of a reserved character. Paul’s flirty with a lot of people really but that’s just his way, he’s very Jack the lad, cheeky chappie, a bit of a charmer, he’ll try smooth talking anyone. But when it comes to Billy there’s definitely a genuine spark there.

What do you know about Paul and Gemma’s history?
They’ve got a bit of dirt on each other from the past. They both had quite a rough upbringing, Paul’s been in and out of prison, they’ve both got a past so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Are you enjoying playing Paul?
Yeah it’s great, there’s loads to go on, he’s not just one dimensional and there’s so much potential for the future with things Paul can get up to. I’m loving the character, he’s great fun to play, he’s got a lot of energy and there’s a lot more to come with him, a lot to delve into just below the surface.

Will you watch your first episodes when they go out in January?
Yes I will, it’s a bit cringey watching yourself and  it will be nerve wracking as it’s such a big show but I’ll watch. My mum’s a big Corrie fan, always has been, so she was made up when I got the job.
