The end of a holiday tradition?

And so we reach the end of another holiday season on Coronation Street. While I do admit to enjoying the storylines for the most part, there were a few things that had me raising eyebrows and feeling mighty let down. The worst culprit for that was New Year's Eve (which was aired on Friday). We had one scene, ONE, in the Rovers, pre-party and that was it. Every other scene of year ending celebration took place in the Bistro including the countdown.

I felt very disappointed that we weren't in the Rovers at least some of the time, seeing Gail getting tiddly with Audrey, Mary having her first New Year's celebration with Jude and Angie along with Norris and Rita in a booth, Chesney and Sinead each looking wistful while the other's back was turned and then the countdown around the bar with streamers and confetti wafting about at midnight. Even more surprised to see that Maria and Audrey appeared to be at the Bistro as "dates" rather than with their mates in the pub. That really felt odd. A huge number of the cast/neighbours were missing as the year ended, characters that surely would have been propping up the Rovers' bar. I call this one a Fail.

Even Christmas didn't feel like Christmas. I did enjoy the storylines and was interested to see what was going to happen, especially with Billy but again, it didn't feel much like Christmas. A few scenes with the Platts to give us a family aspect but we didn't see anyone arguing over their flaming pudd and the only food in sight was a meal Roy whipped up for Brian who'd been incarcerated over some stupid, contrived drunken insult. Who compares someone to a manhole cover? Ridiculous. The Christmas Day episode was like any other. We did get a few scenes in the pub at least but they were minimal and with a skeleton character roster.

And while I'm here, just let me touch on a plot hole that's been bothering me for some time. Brian has asked Cathy to move in with him into Number 12, which is the flat he and Julie owned. When he and Julie split up, there was some talk about her selling it because she couldn't afford it on her own. That was dropped after she left town and the flat has been unoccupied since then. Was it sold and not re-rented? Apparently not. So when Brian returned to town, why didn't he just move back in there rather than be an annoying burden on his neighbours? For the comedy value? There wasn't much of that for me. Did he or will he have to buy Julie out of her half of the flat now? One would think so but that will be brushed under the rug, too, I'm guessing.

And on the speculation side of things, now that we know Carla needs a kidney transplant, I've got a bad feeling knowing there are other characters leaving in 2018 that could be potential donors should they go out the door feet first. I am pleased they didn't go down the cliched route of having her pregnant at least though the abuse Carla's put her insides through with a dizzying amount of red wine over the years, I would have thought it would be her liver that packed it in first. Still, it's a bit different so I don't mind.

Let's leave it there, shall we? I hope ITV can see that, while it's good to make fresh changes to the show, it's not a good idea to drop *all* the traditions to make room for the changes.

New barman in the Bistro on Coronation Street

Well, now then. Who is the new fit fella behind the bar at the Bistro on Coronation Street?

He turned up last night - Friday 17 March 2017 - to serve Nick his glass of wine when he went in there to drown his sorrows.

I think Nick called the new Bistro barman either 'John' or 'Jonathan' but whatever his name, he wasn't mentioned in the credits at the end of the show.  I can't, therefore, bring you details of who the actor is and if he's likely to return.

He's more than a non-speaking extra, however, as he spoke, albeit it just one word.  Let's hope we see more of him soon.

If you know who the actor is in real life, do please let us know!

Underground Coronation Street in the Bistro Cellar

ITV Coronation Street have put online the plans for the Bistro Cellar.  It's a new set that was specially built to cage David Platt this week and stop him from trying to kill himself and Clayton Hibbs.

Above is the model and below are the plans.

Now then, I'm not an engineer but I'd love to hear from someone who is or knows about these things.  The Bistro is built in a unit under an arch of the viaduct. Is it really possible that there would be a cellar under a viaduct?  Wouldn't having a void under a viaduct undermine the structural integrity of the viaduct - which is, after all, a bridge to carry trams? Maybe I need to get out more.

Just a curious thought!

In the meantime, here's David in the cellar!

Tracy vs Carla vs Leanne in Coronation Street Bistro battle

It looks like things are going to get complicated down at the Bistro on Coronation Street.  Currently owned by Nick (and Robert), next week sees Tracy set her sights on owning the place.  And Carla's going to do her best to stop her from taking it over.

Inside Soap magazine reveal that as Tracy is blackmailing Carla about her afternoon delight with Robert at the casino, she'll use that information into getting Carla to sign over the Bistro to her.  That way, Tracy and Robert would own the Bistro rather than Nick and his soon-to-be-wife and Tracy's nemesis, Carla Connor.

So, when Nick accepts an offer for the Bistro, it looks like Tracy will get her way.  However, Leanne chimes in with an even higher offer.  Tracy's furious when she finds out that Leanne's managed to raise the money to buy the Bistro as Ken Barlow is backing her!

Nick's Bistro - a sign of the times

I do love a nice bit of coincidence.  I spotted that Nick's Bistro had a new sign last week on Coronation Street. It's a sign that sits outside of the Bistro, surrounded by lights ... and it looked rather familiar to me.

The reason it looked familiar is that my friends Martyn and Stephen who run the award-winning Eat Me Cafe in Scarborough recently got themselves a new sign too.

I joked to them on twitter when I saw the new Nick's Bistro sign and asked if Nick'd nicked it from their cafe.  Well, the coincidence is that the same company has created the sign for Corrie to use in Nick's Bistro, and the Eat Me Cafe sign.

Worth a mention then is the manufacturer of these amazing signs - Lamplight Design Co.  Their details are as below.

And it looks like we'll be seeing more of their work in Nick's Bistro, according to their tweet, below:

What do you think of Nick's new-look Bistro?

It's distressed, dark and dungeon-like. There are cactus plants on every table and on the bar too. So what does that say about the new-look Nick's Bistro?  Spiky and dangerous, or just a bit naff?

Along with the slogans for life emblazoned on chalkboards around the place and some very odd props, there's also municipal baths tiling and industrial lights.

Does it all work for Coronation Street? Is it right for Nick's Bistro?  What are your thoughts on the new-look Nick's?
