Five Things We Learned In Corrie This Week

I must apologise for the lateness of this week's entry.  I've had a rotten cold, but I've spoken to Moira at the Medical Centre, and she's promised to fit me in to see Doctor Gaddas on the third Tuesday in February.  Apparently I'm not important enough to get one of those special Rita Tanner Sunday Afternoon Walk In Appointments.

There's a new graffiti artist in town.   Now Craig's an upstanding member of the law enforcement community, his street artist mantle has been passed on.  I'm hoping this leads to a new storyline where Craig, wracked with guilt over the betrayal of his artistic community, is forced to arrest Banksy.

Will has thirty pairs of brown shoes in his spare room.  Lock him up now; the man's clearly a nutjob.  Presumably he has another room devoted to his forty spare pairs of glasses with a mirror so he can practice taking them off... then putting them on... then taking them off again.

Liz and Moira are now Super Friends.  Katherine Hepburn said of Fred and Ginger: "He gave her class, she gave him sex."  I see this as a similar exchange of sensibilities, with Liz teaching Moira how to loosen up and enjoy life, and Moira teaching Liz what a top button is for.

Warren Jackson is still a presence on set.  It would be easy to enforce a Stalin-esque purge when you change the head of a child actor on Corrie.  Wipe out any evidence that the original face existed.  It's nice, therefore, to see Original Flavour Nicky Tilsley turning up on Gail's sideboard, and to know that he hasn't been cleansed from the show in favour of pictures of Ben Price when he was a sapling.  (Bonus marks for including pictures of OG Bethany Platt too).

Nicola was going to get Summer drunk. I mean, I may be misinterpreting her, but apparently the young girl being rushed to hospital left her with two bottles of wine to share with Gary.  Either Nicola is a proper alkie - and the amount of bourbon she poured in those wine glasses may be evidence of that - or she was planning on splitting her booze stash with a teenage girl.  Pretty sure THAT isn't part of a traditional Shabbat meal.

How do you solve a problem like Moira, the Health Centre Manager

Why, exactly, may I ask, is everyone so frightened of Moira?

Yes, she is the manager, so, fair enough, she is in charge of the admin staff, such as Liz, whose role is to answer the phone and make appointments for patients. But why is she so fearsome?

Now, if ever there was someone with people skills on the cobbles, it would have to be Liz – and she’s no pushover either - at least she wasn’t before the advent of Megalomaniac Moira, the power-crazed, tyrannical control freak who has taken charge at the health centre.

At one point, I thought there had been a breakthrough and that Moira was being complimentary. In Moira’s presence, Liz is a little nervous and says that she is all fingers and thumbs today. ‘Nonsense,’ replies Moira, ‘You’re doing very well, all things considered.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ asks Liz, justifiably. ‘Well’, replies the delightful Moira, ‘your lack of experience and your limited skills set – stick at it.’

Last week we saw the lovely Doctor Susan Gaddas and Liz having a chat during their break. That was soon put paid to by the arrival of Moira, clearly put out by seeing ‘her’ staff chatting together. Moira addresses the doctor as Susan, and is asked by Moira for her paperwork. Moira’s tone is patronising and even rather aggressive. Doctor Susan Gaddas scurries off obediently, promising her paper work will be done.

Liz is outraged by the exchange and lets Moira know her feelings. She tells Moira that it was wrong to use the doctor’s first name. If she, Liz, had studied for all those years, she would want some respect and no doubt would expect to be addressed as Doctor Gaddas.  Moira’s reply to Liz is as follows, ‘Respect is earned – when she gets up to date with her paperwork, maybe I’ll give her some.’  How does anyone respond to that without using several expletives? Moira adds, somewhat bizarrely, that, ‘ Friendship is no substitute for a tight ship,’ which leads us to wonder if Moira has ever had a friend.

What will the future bring for Liz’s life in her new job? Will the staff remain cowed and obedient or will there be a rebellion and a subsequent removal of ‘The snarling beast of Rosamund Street?’ as Steve calls her. I hope we get to know more about Moira and why she is as she is.

But oh - beige! You have to be kidding, Moira! Our Liz in beige? Please, no!

What do you think of Moira so far?

What are your thoughts on Moira so far in Coronation Street?  Branded as a 'battleaxe' when she was previewed to turn up in our favourite show, I feel she's more of a workplace bully. And she's one that Liz would have made mincemeat of, had she spoken to Liz in the pub the way that she's speaking to her behind the counter at the medical centre.

Liz is like a fish out of water away from her pub and in her new job. Beverley Callard, who plays Liz, is playing a blinder, showing a side to Liz we haven't seen in some time. Away from the Rovers Return, Liz is going to have to learn to survive in a different world. Her pub's only across the road but it might as well be a million miles away.

But what of Moira? I don't like her, and perhaps that's the point. I'm feeling Liz's pain and anger towards her new situation through the portrayal of Moira on screen. Or maybe I need to get out more.

And I can't have been the only Corrie fan who noticed the resemblance between Liz in her new job and that of Joyce Temple-Savage working the check-in desk at the Solana hotel in ITV's Benidorm. If only Bev Callard could make a guest appearance on that show as Joyce's long-lost sister. Imagine.

So how do we feel about Moira, then? Will Liz rise up to the challenge and stick in her job? Or will she stick it to Moira, walk out and return to the Rovers? I hope it's the latter, I really, really do.
