Michelle Keegan and Joe Gilgun to star in new comedy

Michelle Keegan, who played Coronation Street's Tina McIntyre, and Joe Gilgun, who played Jamie Armstrong (and he's one of my favourite UK actors too), will be joining forces in a new TV comedy.

The comedy will be called Brassic, and it's being called an 'edgy' new comedy about a group of working-class friends "finding unconventional ways to win at life in northern suburbia".

Sky TV explains: "Vinnie (Gilgun), a Lancashire lad with bipolar disorder, and Dylan (Molony), his razor-smart best mate, are inseparable and utterly co-dependant. They've hardly spent a day apart since birth. But Dylan's girlfriend Erin (Keegan) might just shake things up for good with her plans to leave town and start a new life for herself and her kid, Tyler.

"Dylan is faced with the impossible decision between a fresh start with the love of his life or staying behind with his inseparable gang of mates that he can't live without. This gang includes: Cardi (Tom Hanson), champion kebab eater and total liability; Ash (Aaron Heffernan), the son of a family of fighting travellers whose fists can get them out of most kinds of trouble; Tommo (Ryan Sampson), the most sexually liberated man in Britain who doesn't care what people think; and JJ (Parth Thakerar), a sharp entrepreneur who runs a garage (with a lucrative sideline in stolen cars).

"These lads have dealt, scammed, bribed and conned their way through adolescence, but now, on the brink of adulthood, their dealing and stealing is catching up with them and a whole load of trouble is heading their way. Like a carefully stacked tower of cards, what happens if one of them is knocked down or, worse, removed from the pack entirely?

"Veering between hilarious comedy and heartfelt emotion, Brassic is about irreplaceable, lifelong friends, loyalty and the things that come between them."

Joe Gilgun says: "I'm truly humbled by the opportunity. We've got an amazing team of creators and watching it all take form has been very moving. Bipolar is a big part of my life. We want to show that you can have mental health issues and in some cases live a productive, exciting life, full of adventure. Our writer Danny Brocklehurst and my friend David Quayle have been invaluable in taking this journey with me. Embrace who you are, decide what to be and go be it."

Brassic will air on Sky One and NOW TV in 2019.

Michelle Keegan reveals shock at Tina being killed off

Michelle Keegan, who played Tina McIntyre on Coronation Street, has revealed that she was more than a litle surprised when she was told her character was being killed off. But, she says, she understands now why Tina had to die.

I'm guessing that because of the interview in this New Zealand magazine, that they are so far behind the UK in terms of storylines that they're only just now seeing Tina being killed off. Can any New Zealand viewers confirm, please?

Michelle tells New Zealand's TV guide: "I was shocked. Initially we thought the door would be left open for her, which I think is every actor's ideal scenario. A few months later (after Keegan told her bosses she wanted to leave the Street), the producers come up with this amazing exit storyline for Tina – that she was going to be killed.

"My heart stopped when I found out. I do understand why she's being killed. It's an amazing storyline and it will affect so many characters on the Street for the next year."

Speaking about leaving Coronation Street, Michelle says:  "I talked it over quite a lot with Kate Kelly (who played Becky McDonald), both before and after she left the show. She always said 'When the time is right you'll know'. That's what happened with me. The time felt right."

Coronation Street Blog interview with Marc Baylis – Rob Donovan

Roll up! Roll up! Read all about it – “Boozy Bookie Bludgeoned Barmaid”. That’s how I imagine the front-page headline of today’s Weatherfield Gazette will read now that Rob has literally got away with murder.

On the morning after being named “Best Bad Boy” at the Inside Soap Awards – and just a few days after filming his final scenes as Rob Donovan – I caught up with Marc Baylis at ITV HQ in London. Marc was in fine form as he looked forward to an exciting crescendo for the character of Rob.

Marc Baylis with our blogger Martin

Before the trial, Rob was “pretty sure he’d got away with it”, says Marc. He felt more confident “with some of the evidence given against Peter”. Even so, when the verdict was announced at Weatherfield Crown Court last night, Rob looked almost as shocked as Peter.

Going through the details of Tina’s death in court threw Rob “off kilter” and the resurfacing guilt resulted in him letting “a couple of hints” out of the bag. Rob’s failure to share Carla’s doubts about Peter’s guilt and his insistence to Simon that Peter did not kill Tina have set alarm bells ringing - especially now that Carla knows about Rob’s little pep talk with Simon.

Erratic behaviour such as this will ultimately be Donovan’s downfall. Carla is convinced that Peter is innocent and next week Rob will confess to his sister - “They’ve been through so much together that he doesn’t have to say it, she just knows”. Essentially, Rob “just can’t lie to her anymore”, Marc says. What we do not know is what Carla will do with this information and whether or not she will stand by him and let Peter rot in jail.

Rob hopes that Carla’s family loyalty will outweigh any feelings she once had for Peter and Marc notes that Rob “has brainwashed himself throughout the whole event and he’s trying to brainwash her as well”.

Tracy’s hen do, Rob’s stag do and the wedding will all take place next week. It won’t be a wild one for Rob, who Marc explains is “trying to be angelic”.  Instead of going out with the lads, he will have a few drinks with his ‘best woman’ Carla and Michelle because Rob “wants the whole wedding day to be absolutely magical”. Perhaps his secret will be exposed at this point, which would leave Carla contemplating an interesting dilemma on the day of the wedding.

It is somewhat curious that despite Rob’s murderous ways, there is still a likeability factor about him. When Rob was revealed to be Tina’s murderer, Marc says the reaction from fans was “the polar opposite” of what he expected – “for some reason it has made people like Rob more.”

Rob Donovan is not the archetypal soap villain. One of the most interesting aspects of his character is that he does feel guilty for what he has done. Rob tried to stay away from court in order to “carry on his denial” but was hoodwinked into attending the trial in a show of loyalty towards the Barlow family. This led to “all the guilt layering up within Rob again” and explains his recent slip-ups.

Rob has redeeming qualities in his obvious love for both his sister and his fiancĂ©e. Marc regards this loyalty as key to Rob and feels “that’s why the storyline is working”. “We’ve tried to be as delicate as we possibly can. I’ve stated a lot to people that we don’t need too many shots of Rob being dastardly in the background… and not too many guilty looks.” “I kind of wanted to keep it away from being too much of a soap villain”, he continues, and instead show “as much of a real person as possible going through that situation”.

I was intrigued to know at what point Marc discovered that Rob was to be Tina’s murderer. Marc recalls there was a month after “Michelle (Keegan) found out that Tina was going to be killed off until I found out that Rob was the murderer”. He laughs that everyone was walking around work going ‘I hope it’s not me’. “It was a dramatic month”, he says – “more dramatic than the actual material on air!”

As soon as the murder storyline came up, Marc “knew that there was a timeline” which he believes has been “timed to perfection”.  He has had “a brilliant two and a half years” and although he would have liked to have stayed on for longer, he is “very happy to be going” because of the strength of the material that leads to Rob’s exit.

Marc feels “really lucky to have had this storyline”. He is clearly philosophical about the end of his time at Coronation Street and immensely proud of what he has achieved. He describes the scripts he has been given during Rob’s exit storyline as “by far the best material that I’ve had since being on the show”.

He is quick to praise Michelle Keegan for her portrayal of Tina and express his pride at being involved in the departure of such a massive character. He considers this a “compliment”, noting that as an actor “you want to be there with good material”.

Next week Rob and Tracy are due to have their fairytale wedding. Marc talks about “the romantic picturesque life that is being drawn up” for Rob and Tracy but can’t reveal whether or not they will actually tie the knot. Being soap land, “it doesn’t necessarily go to plan”. Peter Barlow can definitely be struck off the guest list, though – that we do know.

Rob really does want to marry Tracy – “as far as they are both concerned they are meant to be together”, says Marc, “so it’s exterior events that take over”.

The wedding venue is “the most beautiful location that you will ever see and it’s them always punching above their weight”. What I really want to know though is whether the harpist has been booked and whether “Firestarter” will be performed!

The wedding was filmed at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire, which is where Simon Gregson’s wedding reception was held in real life. “It’s just absolutely stunning,” says Marc and he enthusiastically describes the huge lakes and lawns and the horse and carriage that have already been revealed in the publicity shots.

Marc says that he and Kate Ford “have had an absolute blast playing each other’s partners” and if it wasn’t for Rob’s actions, he believes Rob and Tracy could have gone on to live “not necessarily happily ever after, but as happily ever after as Rob and Tracy could be”. It would be a tempestuous Burton-Taylor type of relationship but it would never be boring.

The outfits at the wedding will be traditional. Kate’s dress is white and “absolutely stunning” while Rob has “gone for the long tails”. It is difficult to see how there can be a happy ending but whatever happens in the next couple of weeks, Marc likes to think that Tracy loves Rob so much that she would wait for him.

Marc feels that Rob getting together with Tracy marked a turning point that saw Rob “really become accepted on The Street”. He is very honest in saying that before Rob and Tracy were put together, “it felt like we didn’t quite know what to do with Rob”. However, “as soon as they got together, it just worked”. I agree that Rob and Tracy are extremely well matched and I’ve enjoyed the dynamic between them. It is shame to break that up. Tracy has actually become almost likeable as a result. Almost.

Stuart Blackburn has stated that he would like Rob to return at some point.  According to Marc “the future is a blank canvas” and he is definitely not against coming back “if it’s right for everyone”. In the more immediate future, he is appearing in pantomime as The Prince in “Sleeping Beauty” in Bromley. There can’t be many soap murderers who are cast as anything other than the panto villain. This is testament to that likeability factor I was talking about.

Other than that, he is “happy to go where the wind blows”. “It’s a really weird change”, concedes Marc who compares his newfound freedom to “moving out of home” or the feeling he’s “just finished university”.

Marc has invested in his own camera and microphone and for his leaving present, his Corrie colleagues clubbed together to buy him a lighting rig. As a result, he will now be able to “put tapes together and send those out”.

He would love to do an American drama and was considering going to the States in the New Year for pilot season. However, he will stay in the UK and see what opportunities arise here. He’ll certainly be able to get down to Villa Park more often and is looking forward to watching Coronation Street as a viewer again.

Emotionally, it must have been difficult playing the part of Rob in recent months. Marc says he has “never had to work so hard” but it has “been made easier by the material”. He was worried about burning out but thankfully made it through unscathed.

Rob’s final scenes were shot at nighttime, which makes me think he might do a moonlight flit. Marc recalls that “it wasn’t the easiest of shoots” with the elements against them. But cast and crew were determined to “get the work right, through to the end” so that Rob’s final scenes bring the storyline to a powerful conclusion.

The whole way through, I’ve been considering whether Rob Donovan is an evil murderer or just an ordinary guy who found himself in a difficult situation and made a bad decision. I think the latter but I am curious to know how far Rob would have gone to protect himself. Would he, for example, have sold Carla or Tracy down the river if either of them had been prime suspect for Tina’s murder?

“Absolutely not”, says Marc emphatically. “The whole concept of this storyline and Rob and Carla’s relationship is about the truth and the loyalty and there is a lot to do with family values and morals”. It seems strange to think of a murderer as having morals but Marc believes he would apply the same principles to Tracy.

Rob Donovan arrived in Weatherfield, just over two years ago, an ex-con determined to build bridges with his estranged sister and turn his life around. He found love, remarkably, with Tracy Barlow and when Tina threatened to ruin all of that, he snapped. It is hard to predict how anyone will react if they fear that what they love most is about to be ripped away from them.

Will Rob pay the price for his crime? One way or another, I am sure that he will. And I hope Peter’s conviction will be overturned. Rob has become a very strong character and he will be missed.

It has been reported that Rob’s exit will be screened on Bonfire Night with explosive fireworks guaranteed. I suspect therefore that Corrie fans will remember this fifth of November for some time to come.

Michelle Keegan launches Lipsy fashion line

Michelle Keegan has filmed her final scenes at Coronation Street and has now launched her own fashion collection for Lipsy, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Michelle has collaborated with Lipsy to create a 30+ piece Autumn 2014 collection, which will launch online and across all UK Lipsy stores on July 3rd.

Lipsy say each piece was designed with “Michelle’s enviable lifestyle in mind, with key looks specifically for date nights, stylish lunches with the girls and glam Saturday nights out.”

Michelle has long had a passion for fashion, and her first job after filming her final scenes as Tina McIntyre on Corrie was as a fashion correspondent on ITV’s Lorraine show.

Michelle Keegan films final scenes for Coronation Street

Michelle Keegan has filmed her final scenes at Coronation Street in her role as Tina McIntyre.

Tina, as we know, will be killed off this summer in a whodunnit murder storyline.

Corrie crew members were tweeting this week that they'd been working on a night shoot, which looks likely to tie in with Tina's leaving storyline.

Tina will be murdered in May

This just seen in the Metro, there was speculation this morning that Michelle Keegan may have received the scripts that contain the scenes leading up to or including her death in May.

She tweeted the following on Monday night: ‘Just read my new scripts!!! Exciiiiiiiiiting stuff!! Can’t wait for u guys to see it! X’

The article goes on to drag out that old chestnut about filming different endings to the story. That's very rarely ever true and never usually in storylines like this. The only time I've ever seen it done is a guilty/not guilty verdict scene that lasts a few seconds, something they can tease us with online. They just wouldn't go to the expense of filming more than one definitive scene to show "whodunnit". The cast involved probably already know the answer.

That aside, we're set to find out soon that Carla is pregnant and Tina will fetch up pregnant as well. Peter's going to hit the bottle again and we have several suspects lining up to be the potential murderer: Peter, Carla, and maybe Rob who may be defending Carla, although I think he'd be more likely to go after Peter,  or Tracy, who holds a grudge well.

We haven't got an "expendable crew member" (i.e. throwaway character) on board and we know Chris Gascoyne is leaving for awhile. My money's on Peter but not as murderer. I speculate it will be an accident and he may go down for manslaughter. That gives him the open door to return, sooner than later.

Tina and Peter: Classic Corrie or contrived and dodgy?

Tina and Peter. Whichever way I look at it I think it's just wrong wrong wrong! I know this storyline has been put together to give Michelle Keegan an "explosive" exit and Chris Gascoyne the opportunity to take another break, but it just feels so contrived and dodgy.

First of all, and probably most importantly, I just don't agree that the characters work well together. I don't see the chemistry. Stuart Blackburn has done some interesting things so far with Corrie, some good and some less so, but this isn't right. Blackburn has said how much he is enjoying this storyline so far and I just cannot agree with him. There was no slow burn with this one. One minute Peter and Tina would pass on the street without the faintest interaction or glimmer of recognition, the next they are up those shakey stairs and into his pokey flat, tearing each others clothes off like there's no tomorrow.

Also, Carla, femme fatale of Weathefield, has a less than glittering track record when it comes to female friends. However yet again, Carla and Tina are suddenly buddies, despite having previously had nowt to do with one another. Contrived, or just plain odd?

I know Peter has an addictive personality but would he become so quickly, passionately obsessed with Tina little more than five minutes after marrying the most eligible woman in Weatherfield? I for one very much doubt it. The man was snogging Tina at the wedding reception for goodness sake! I've come to really loathe Peter of late. Chris Gascoyne has always been brilliant, however the sleazy lothario we see before us really is one step too far. Even his previous bigamy storyline didn't feel as sordid as this - although maybe I'm wrong. As Bet Lynch once commented on one of Elsie Tanner's dubious boyfriends "He'd be shouting gerrup them stairs in a bungalow!"

As for Tina's motivation for the affair, who knows. Yes I know she was heartbroken when Tommy Duckworth ran off into the night. And yes, I know Tina was heartbroken over the Izzy/Gary/baby Jake/Joe fiasco, but would either of these developments really fling her into the waiting arms of Peter?

I really didn't like Tina the other night when she convinced Rita she was staying in Weatherfield just for her. We all knew the real reason. Down the line I can see Rita blaming herself when Tina meets her supposed grizzly end.

So are you enjoying the ongoing Peter/Tina storyline or are you, like me, suddenly finding yourself volunteering for household chores whenever they start locking lips on screen?

Corrie Christmas Countdown - Day 16

Over the next few weeks, the ITV Coronation Street website is doing a daily Christmas countdown. They'll be showing classic clips of and teasers and trivia about Corrie Christmases.

Today, there's a video where they're going behind the scenes with a Corrie photoshoot where some of the cast share what's in store for their characters over the Christmas period.

For those who can't access the video, here's what they say:

Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt): “This Christmas, for David Platt. He is heartbroken, trying to win back Kylie who’s on self-destruct mode."

Paula Lane (Kylie Platt): “He’s going to really, really mess up this time. Big style!”

Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper): “This is obviously Hayley’s last Christmas on Coronation Street so it’s bittersweet, let’s say. But it’s snowing in Weatherfield, it’s beautiful, she’s surrounded by friends, she’s got Roy at her side, what more could you wish for?”

Jane Danson (Leanne Tilsley): “Leanne, she’s trying to make Christmas be special but obviously Nick’s brain injury makes it unpredictable. Anything could happen. And that’s all I’m going to say!”

Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald): “As usual, Steve’s kind of got himself an admirer, a friend from college. Andrea shows up at the Rovers which annoys Michelle. There’s also a little something about a Christmas present which annoys Michelle. And then all the things happen which annoy Michelle! So annoying Michelle on Christmas Day!”

Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow): “Peter’s got himself into a slight situation at the moment and he’s carrying on with Christmas as if nothing’s happened. Unfortunately, it has.”

Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre): “What’s going to happen? Well, you’ll have to find out and keep on watching!”

Corrie Christmas Countdown - Day 14

Over the next few weeks, the ITV Coronation Street website is doing a daily Christmas countdown. They'll be showing classic clips of and teasers and trivia about Corrie Christmases.

Today, some members of the cast share what they like about Christmas in a video.

For those who can't see it, here's what they say:

Jane Danson (Leanne Tilsley) – “My favourite thing about Christmas is the whole build-up to it especially now as I’ve got children and going to see Father Christmas and the doing the whole Christmas carols and Christmas shopping and the fun things you do, especially with the kids at Christmas.”

Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) – “My favourite thing about Christmas is when it’s over! I’m not great at Christmas.”

Samia Smith (Maria Connor) – “My favourite thing now is probably my daughter’s face on Christmas morning when she realises that Santa’s been. She’s four now and she completely gets it and she gets so excited on Christmas Eve. So it’s probably’s Freya’s face. And also the Christmas markets around Manchester are amazing.”

Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) – “Everyone in the family getting together, having a laugh, having a few drinks, watching Corrie of course and just being together at Christmas. That’s it, just having fun.”

What do you like about Christmas?

For me, it's the Christmas carols and services and the family getting together.

Corrie Christmas Countdown - Day 4

From now until the big day, the ITV Coronation Street website is doing a daily Christmas countdown. Over the next few weeks, they'll be showing classic clips of and teasers and trivia about Corrie Christmases.

Today, some of the cast share their favourite presents of all time in a video special.

For those who can't view the clip, here's what they said:

Catherine Tyldesley (Eva Price) – “The best Christmas present I got as a child was my first make-up set because I’m a bit of a drag queen!”

Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) – “That kitchen that every kid wanted, every girl wanted, where the doors used to open – it was dead good. That was my best present.”

Paula Lane (Kylie Platt) – “My first pair of inline rollerblades. I was never out of them and I spent the whole of Christmas on them.”

Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald) – “Big Track! Loved Big Track! Parents hated Big Track as it went round the front room hitting grandparents and all sorts of things.”

Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) – “My granddad made me a doll’s house out of a cardboard box. I absolutely loved it and had it for about ten years until my mum threw it away.”

Samia Smith (Maria Connor) – “There was a game, when we were kids, called Lights Alive. Don’t know if you remember it. You put a black sheet of paper in and then you got these little shapes and you put them in and turned it on and it made a big neon shape. It was very 80s but it was very cool and I loved it.”

What's your favourite Christmas present?

I remember having a miniature farm where you built all the farm buildings (barn, stable, pig sty, chicken coop) and got about three fields made out of wood and then you put fences and gates around them. And then, along with the farm, you got all the animals like cows, sheep, horses, pigs, ducks, chickens, geese, sheepdog and a cat. It was great!

It really made you have an imagination, where you invented stories involving the animals. It's such a shame that these days children are sitting in front of a screen playing computer games.

What about you?

Whodunnit? Who cares?

So we learn that Tina McIntyre is to be killed off next year. The Rovers barmaid cum child minder cum Rita's surrogate daughter will probably be murdered. Apparently this storyline will run for some considerable time and involve many cast members.

Yes, my Corrie friends, this can only mean one thing: a Whodunnit mystery. To be honest, I've seen this coming. In recent times, young Tina has made oh so many enemies for herself, and not just in our house. Let's recap Tina's eventful few months...

She's upset the Armstrong-Windass applecart by reneging on the yawnsome surrogacy deal and initially refusing to hand over baby Jake. She's taken David Platt in, making an enemy of Kylie, and chucked him out again making an enemy of David. She's put a brick through Tracy's shop window. And of course she's about to embark on a cringey affair with Peter Barlow. I reckon Carla could have Tina in a fight any day. Mind you, Mrs Connor would probably just set one of her minions on the barmaid...she could always ask Michelle, if she can be bothered to stop pouting and uncross her arms.

My ideal outcome to what is likely to be a lumbering storyline over many months, or "explosive" as the powers that be often choose to describe it, is for Tracy Barlow to be the culprit. I've been looking for a plausible way for Tracy to be removed from our screens ever since her pointless return what seems like 25 years ago. She still has no redeeming qualities, even when face to face with Faye and Grace. Making Tracy the murderer would be a convenient way to kill two birds with one stone, as it were.

If Tracy is only being kept on to give Deirdre some family, let's see someone else from Deirdre's past come back and provide a bit of colour. What about Blanche's sister? Tracy would be an excellent choice - she already has form. I for one would love Tina's demise to be a full-blown homage to Charlie Stubbs' offing of 2007. Maybe the powers that be will turn Tina gay just so Tracy-luv can get herself dolled up and perform that charming dance once more? Wouldn't that be a fitting swan song? That ornament must surely still be knocking about amongst Anna Windasses' nicknacks.

Or maybe Crazy Kirsty will escape from jail, return to Weatherfield and get her own back on Tina for all those tedious parking escapades that provided the early indication that lovely Kirsty was a tad unhinged? I'd forgive the flurry of sequins and the faint echo of a poorly timed Bruce Forsyth gag just to see Natalie Gumede make a return.

The prospect of another big whodunnit storyline doesn't fill me full of enthusiasm. We've seen it all before. Someone will be wrongly suspected and imprisoned, everyone else will look conveniently guilty at regular intervals and there will be more red herrings than Frescho's fish counter can provide. The main suspects will all be lined up for an identity parade photo shoot and nobody will be allowed to give anything away until the big reveal.

Tina has been front and centre of far too many storylines for my liking, she does tend to dominate. However I have enjoyed aspects of the character and Michelle Keegan has definitely been an asset to Coronation Street. I hope she does really well when she moves on to pastures new. I just think Corrie could serve her better than simply bumping her off in a painting by numbers story. I may be wrong of course, it may have us completely gripped. I'd just hoped for some fresh ideas.

What would your ideal send off be for Tina McIntyre? And if she does have to meet a grisly  end, who would you like to see do time for the crime?

Michelle Keegan confirms - Tina will be murdered

According to the Radio Times, via the Jonathan Ross show, it seems the rumours are true. Tina McIntyre is going to be killed off for her exit from Coronation Street. Actor Michelle Keegan who plays Tina was interviewed on the television chat show and confirmed it:

“She’s getting killed. At first she wasn’t and then they came up with a really good storyline that involves a lot of characters on the street and it’s going to be a big storyline next year. So, in a way, it’s an honour and I’m very excited for it.”

She's not giving anything more away other than it seems it would be a murder but we don't know at this point who "dunnit". I think it's a shame they have to have a murder "mystery" yet again. It's getting to be every other year that someone dies and someone else is falsely accused of it, even spending time in jail and my guess is that someone might be David. But it's early days. Peter or Carla could also be in the running if Tina's affair with Peter interferes with their relationship.

It doesn't really  matter. It's a re-run plot device and it's getting old and tired. It's also a shame when it's a pretty young woman rather than an evil rapist like Frank Foster.

Ooh, I just had a thought. Is it too much to ask that Tracy offs Tina and is packed off to prison for good?
