Meet new Irish Coronation Street character, Phil

Irish actor Simon Delaney has landed a new role in Coronation Street as Irish character, Phil.

The Irish  Mirror reports that Dubliner Simon will appear for the first time next month. But it's not yet known whether he has signed up for a short or long-term role.

A source told the Sunday World: "Simon plays an Irish character and has already filmed his opening scenes."

Simon Delaney starred in the 2001-2003 RTE series Bachelors Walk. Since then he has appeared alongside Sean Penn in This Must Be the Place, Vince Vaughn in Delivery Man and Keira Knightley in Begin Again. He's also appeared in a host of top TV shows including The Fall, Moone Boy and The Good Wife.

Simon is following in the footsteps of Ireland's Keith Duffy (Ciaran McCarthy) and Charles Lawson (Jim McDonald) who have also appeared in Corrie.

Happy St. Patrick's Day - Corrie's Irish Links

Corrie’s links with Ireland have existed since the beginning with one of the original characters, Concepta Riley, hailing from Ireland. She regularly appeared until 1964 and made guest appearances in 1967, 1972 and 1975.

The most famous Irishman on the street has been Jim McDonald. Loved for his accent and quirky Irish sayings, Jim has become a firm favourite with viewers.

Other Irish links include barman and chef Ciaran McCarthy who was played by Boyzone’s Keith Duffy.

Paul, Liam and Michelle Connor’s parents Barry and Helen are Irish and live in Ireland although none of the children have an Irish accent. Unless they were brought up in Manchester and then the senior Connors returned to their native island.

Elsie Tanner had two Irishmen as lovers: Jim Mount (1965-66) and Ron Mather (1978-9).

And when Concepta visited in 1972 and 1975, she was accompanied by her fiancée and later second husband Sean Regan. Upon his visit, Sean made a pass at Bet Lynch.

And a piece of trivia for you: Sam Kydd, who played Mike Baldwin’s Cockney wide-boy dad Frankie, was an Irishman!

And a member of our blogging team, Emma, is also Irish!

Irish Corrie fans! Have dinner with Coronation Street cast

Well, here's something rather special for Irish Coronation Street fans from Evoke.ie.

You can join a coach tour from Ireland to Manchester in January 2017.  And on that tour, you can meet the Coronation Street cast - and have dinner with them!

In the Evoke.ie soaps dinner, you'll have the chance to meet, greet and dine with four of the current actors from Coronation Street. Dinner starts in the function room in the hotel for what promises to be a very entertaining evening.  Each person will get an opportunity to get an autograph and photograph with each actor.  This will be followed by a question and answer session.

There are two meet and greet and dinner events - Saturday 21 January and Saturday Friday 28 January.

Irish fans! Corrie on Tour is heading to Belfast

It's been announced today that Corrie on Tour will be opening in Glasgow on Saturday August 27th. 

Alison King, who played Carla Connor in Coronation Street, is the virtual tour guide to the old Corrie set including props, costumes and room settings.

And UTV announce today that after Corrie on Tour has been to Glasgow, it will then move to Belfast.  Dates are yet to be announced for the Belfast tour, stayed tuned and we'll bring you them as soon as we can.
