#CorrieLive: A running commentary

I was really looking forward to the episode tonight and it didn't let me down. I wrote down a few notes while watching and I give you the running commentary:

Sarah's a brave little soldier, isn't she?

You can really feel the energy, can't you?

Yes, Sarah, he does scare you!

Cathy took Roy to Blackpool, she mentioned the Blackpool Tower... and everyone groans.

All that screaming and hollering, why can't the Nazir families hear them? Uh oh, it went quiet awfully suddenly. Holy crap, Kylie!

Now the first break. You know, I've been predicting Callum's death for months. I never expected it to be one of the main characters. But on the other hand, after all their history, it's probably poetic justice that Kylie was the one that killed Callum.

Aw, in spite of everything, Sarah still wants to call the ambulance and save him!

Tina O'Brien and Paula Lane are knocking it out of the park, i gotta say.

Poor Craig. Is he getting stood up? He looked great, didn't he?

Roy's driven to use exclamation marks. He really *is* wound up!

There's Eva, back where she belongs behind the bar!

I'm glad it was Carla left with Roy to put his world to rights. Poor Cathy. You have to feel for her. It wasn't her fault her timing was so off. And Carla's right, Roy is feeling more for Cathy and he's scared of it.

Oh typical. It's almost Keystone cops, isn't it? Key the car? How old are you? 12? Then, because it's so conveniently running, steal the car. You couldn't make this stuff up! Now what will they do with the body? Pull a John Stape and put him in the wheelie bin?

Liz and Lloyd were a good couple, weren't they?

Ah yes, the manhole cover that Tony conveniently found under the garage. Nobody is surprised Callum corked it and it was obvious that's where Callum was ending up.

Kylie in a panic, wants to run again?

Sarah's not fooling anyone, she's clearly not all right.

Anna does not "do" drunk very well. Anna drunk and Sally making digs has the inevitable result, Anna letting the Kevin Kiss Kat out of the bag. Uh oh! Had to happen.

There's a body in the kitchen and the neighbours at the back door.

Robert is very naive. He's going down with a crash.

I thought Lloyd had been around longer than 10 years!

Yet another relationship going down the tubes over just a kiss. Knowing it was Sally that did the kissing made it worse. I can understand Tim feeling like that.

Yep, Craig got stood up.

Sinead sure is walking well, and on heels, for someone that was wobbling on crutches a month or so ago.

Down the rabbit hole for Callum. Are they sealing that over? Otherwise, it's going to start to smell pretty soon.

Ooops, sound fail in the kebab shop.

What? Who takes a taxi back from committing a crime? Seriously? Too bad they didn't wait a few more minutes to steal the car. Callum would have been in the back and he'd have gone up in smoke, too!

Cake is never a bad thing to try. Well, maybe if it's soaked in rum and you don't like rum.

Oh, please, don't put Tim and Anna together. I have a bad feeling about this if he and Sally don't get back together.

Awwww a little kiss for Roy and Cathy!

Awesome old car! And it's good bye to Lloyd (and Andrea)

Mistakes always come back to bite you in the backside. That goes for Sally and it probably goes for David and Kylie. David says he's going to get Callum out of the hole and miles away. Wanna bet?

Ok. It's done.

Overall? Excellent. The bit with Todd and Tony stealing the car was contrived, obviously so that the manhole would be used. The neighbours that kept interrupting were also a bit "Keystone Cops" but you know... David, Kylie and Sarah really carried the episode and really nailed it. All three actors were fabulous.

The other main story involving Roy and Cathy was also really nice, Roy clearly at a turning point in his grief, as is Cathy. Both of them have found a way to understand that they can move on without forgetting their loved ones. It's going to be difficult for viewers to see Roy with someone else, but perhaps she's the right one. Hayley was the making of Roy, and now the tables have turned and Roy is the one that's giving Cathy the helping hand. It could work. I guess it will depend on how long Melanie Hill wants to stay with the show. David Neilson was in top form as usual, and was a joy to watch.

Sally's kiss with Kevin came back to bite her and Tim's heart is broken, not just because of what Sally did but because it was his new best mate, Kevin. That's the ultimate betrayal, isn't it?

And finally, Lloyd and Andrea leave the street for a new life. Off they rode in an antique car with arms full of balloons. I will miss Lloyd a lot. I won't really miss Andrea. I didn't dislike her but I never really warmed up to her, either. They had a happy ending, though, and that's enough for me.

All in all, well done to the cast and crew!!!

There's a longer, more detailed blog post with more thoughts over here on State of the Street.

#CorrieLive is upon us

Excitement and nerves are mounting for the cast of Coronation Street as they get ready for tonight's live broadcast. There have been a number of cast members interviewed on television and in the newspapers. Many are nervous but are also looking forward to the experience. Nobody wants to be the one that messes up. Sean Ward said on Lorraine that he's going to pretend it's just another dress rehearsal and Hayley Tamaddon is worried about dropping a tray of champagne filled glasses.

There have been two weeks of rehearsals and the adrenaline will be pumping tonight. Digital Spy reports  Stuart Blackburn told Good Morning Britain that "there's shock and awe as things explode. It's just fantastic. It's got everything." He's confident everyone will be spot on.

There is also a worry that a match between Manchester United and Ipswich at Old Trafford nearby might cause some problems. The football stadium is less than a mile away and there are fears that noise from the crowds might be audible though one source says that they've filmed through matches in the past and it's not been a problem. The match starts at 8, half way through the broadcast. I'm sure sharp eared viewers will be listening for it!

The logistics behind doing this for television are staggering. Many of the actors have not done live stage work and even the ones that have know it's the ultimate challenge for a performer. Storylines are at a turning point for more than just the Platts. I'm excited! Bring it on!

Coronation Street Live - Access All Areas

Coronation Street goes live and interactive from the cobbles on Wednesday 23rd September with a unique second screen experience.

Get your phones, tablets and laptops at the ready as for the first time in the show’s 55 year history the audience will be able to go behind the scenes LIVE as it’s happening, with an Access All Areas online stream, hosted by Stephen Mulhern.

Eleven hidden cameras have been rigged in and around the Media City based set, which will allow our viewers to see the cast and crew hard at work during the live episode.

Peek through No.8’s net curtains to see what trouble the Platts are in, peer over Sally’s fence to catch a glimpse of the drama unfolding and be a fly on the wall during Lloyd and Andrea’s leaving party in the Rovers.

The stream will broadcast live, so whilst viewers watch the action unfold on ITV, they will also be able to watch it being made simultaneously on Facebook and itv.com via their laptop, mobile or tablet.

Then as the main episode breaks for the adverts, Stephen Mulhern will commandeer Kevin Webster’s Lounge to take the socials by storm. Fans can interact directly via Facebook and Twitter to tell us how and where they’re watching the show and what they think of the dramatic events.

That’s not all! In a Coronation Street first, we’re allowing the audience to be a part of the action and see their choices reflected on screen.

Want to leave a message on the bar in the Rovers? Stephen can make that happen! One lucky viewer will get their Tweet or Facebook message written on the empty blackboard by the end of the episode!

Think you could pick the soundtrack to Lloyd and Andrea’s leaving party? Our Jukebox is yours to command - viewers can choose the music by playing along in our interactive poll on Facebook and Twitter.

After the episode, Stephen will then jump from the live stream to ITV2 where he’ll be rounding up the cast to get their reactions immediately after the live and answer fan questions via Twitter. This will transmit at 10pm.

The rehearsal period will be covered by Coronation Street’s Digital team, providing exclusive content on itv.com/corrie, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube with never-before-seen access throughout every stage of the rehearsal process.

Coronation Street Live: Access All Areas starts straight after Emmerdale on Wednesday 23rd September

PROMO AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE HERE: https://youtu.be/BHgkz4ElQtY

Coronation Street Live - Sneak Preview of Rehearsal Scenes

Dramatic new images have been released of rehearsals of some of the opening scenes of Coronation Street’s exciting live episode.

Behind the scenes photos show actors Sean Ward and Tina O’Brien rehearsing the thrilling fight scenes which will be aired in the first part of the episode on Wednesday September 23rd.

In tomorrow night’s episode (Monday 21st) viewers will see Sarah lure Callum to the Platt’s house by sending a message from Kylie’s phone, leading him to believe they are going to pay him the £20k he has demanded.

Wednesday’s Live episode will pick up at the point where Callum has arrived at the house and is furious to discover he has been duped.

A terrified Sarah is determined to put an end to Callum’s reign of terror and has hatched a plan to record his every word as evidence for the police. But when Callum realises what she is up to things take a sinister turn.

The fight scenes were choreographed during the rehearsals for the hour-long live episode and see a petrified Sarah trying to escape from the clutches of the desperate and furious drug dealer.

Is Callum about to take the ultimate revenge on the Platt family? Whatever the outcome of this shocking showdown lives on the street will never be the same again.

Corriefest pics and review - Coronation Street fan convention

To Manchester for two very special Coronation Street events held at the award-winning pub, The Lass o'Gowrie.

First up were two episodes of Coronation Street from 1977 acted out live in front of us in the pub by a wonderful team of actors. The audience followed the action around the pub watching two full half-hour performances as Annie Walker had her delusions of grandeur crushed underfoot when she found out the monogrammed (or mammogrammed as Hilda Ogden called it) carpet with AW on it was nothing more than an offcut from the Alhambra Weatherfield bingo hall.

For a full review of the Coronation Street 1977 Live! plays, do please have a look here.

Picture from Coronation Street 1977 Live! copyright Elspeth Mary Moore - see many more here.

It's not too late to see these plays as they run for another couple of days.  Buy tickets and find out more here.

CORRIEFEST

Well, if that wasn't exciting enough, the next day we set off back to the Lass o'Gowrie pub bright and early in the morning for a 10am start for Corriefest - the UK's Coronation Street fan convention.  Also turning up early for the event were fellow bloggers and podcasters from Conversation Street, Coronation Street actor Dave Dutton - the man who's had 11 roles on Corrie - and our friends and guest bloggers Nikki and John.   We all trooped off for a coffee and then returned to the pub to take our seats for one of the best days I've ever had as a Coronation Street fan.

With a packed pub and a sell-out event, I was really lucky to sit right at the very front of the action. I felt a bit like the class nerd but got over my embarassment and decided to wear my Corrie anorak with pride and make the most of sitting in the best seat in the house.

MC Charlie Ross, Corriefest
Corriefest kicked off with a warm up from MC Charlie Ross, stand up comedian, TV writer, actor, football fan and bit of a geek - his words, not mine. Find out more about him here.  Charlie introduced us to an amazing bit of footage from 1972 which had long been thought lost and had only recently been found. It was the episode of This is Your Life for Pat Phoenix and was like watching not just Corrie gold,  but pure TV gold.

We then had a screening of another rare programme which had never seen the light of day before.  It was a pilot for a TV show written by Coronation Street writer-turned-producer Harry Kershaw, called Lift Off.  It was a Corrie spin-off starring Graham Haberfield and Neville Buswell who played Jerry Booth and Ray Langton on the Street.  Graham and Neville played their Corrie characters but while on Corrie they were both builders, in Lift Off they'd turned into insurance salesman.  It was interesting to watch and to see what could have been if Lift Off had indeed Taken Off, which it obviously hadn't.  Fred Feast, who played Corrie's Fred Gee, also turned up in the programme as the lift engineer.

Actress Kathy Jones at Corriefest 2013 with Gareth Kavanagh and Charlie Ross
With our minds firmly planted in Coronation Street's past and the golden age of Granada TV, what a delight it was to hear from one of Corrie's first ever dolly-birds!  Actress Kathy Jones, who played Gail's mate Tricia Hopkins, took to the stage and shared some of her history working as a 19 year old on what was then the new Northern drama series.  Find out more about Kathy Jones and Tricia Hopkins here.   After Kathy's turn at the mic, the floor was open to questions from fans.   You can follow Kathy on twitter at @KathyJones.

Casting Director June West at Corriefest 2013 with Jeni Howarth-Williams
Up next on stage was legendary Coronation Street casting director June West. Not only has June cast some of the most iconic characters for Corrie, she also did the casting for the rather fab BBC4 drama The Road to Coronation Street.  June was interviewed by actress Jeni Howarth-Williams, who played Elsie Howard in the Coronation Street 1977 plays held at the Lass o'Gowrie.

June revealed that actor Rupert Everett is "desperate" to be in Coronation Street and he was almost cast in the role of Lewis Archer but it was given, as we know, to Nigel Havers.

June gave a good insight into the casting process for Coronation Street and The Road to Coronation Street. She got a big laugh when she said that after Alan Hasall was originally cast as Tyrone Dobbs, one of the Corrie writers saw him on screen for the first time and said: "Well, there's our next Albert Tatlock!"

It was then time for lunch with hotpot served behind the bar and the chance to meet some lovely people I'd only ever chatted to on twitter before - including our guest blogger Kel who is on twitter @kelwrites and Coronation Street extra Jonny Grimshaw, who is on twitter @jonnygforce and I even got the chance to meet one of our Coronation Street fans of the week.  What a cracking day this was turning out to be!

Writer John Stevenson at Corriefest 2013 with Corriefest organiser and Lass o'Gowrie landlord Gareth Kavanagh

After lunch we took our seats again for the main man, Coronation Street writer John Stevenson. John wrote his first script in May 1976 and his work includes writing the Ken/Deidre/Mike love triangle storyline and the January 2000 "two-hander" featuring Raquel and Curly Watts.  He also wrote out Alan Bradley by killing him off getting knocked over by the Blackpool tram.

John revealed that one side of the character of Annie Walker was partly based on his own mum. Now, there's an admission to make! He also said that Sir Laurence Olivier wanted to be on Coronation Street and the writing team had him pencilled in to make an appearance on the show - as a tramp!

What a great bloke and wonderful storyteller John Stevenson was.  As you can see from the picture below, the audience were rapt.  This picture shows just a fraction of the audience, with yours truly in seventh heaven at the very front, and is copyright Debbie Manley, who is on twitter at

Corriefest 2013 at The Lass o'Gowrie
After John Stevenson's fantastic talk, we then had The Big Fat Coronation Street Quiz with a quizmaster who had once appeared on Coronation Street. He played an extra who was thrown out of the Kabin by Rita for looking through mucky magazines.  We know this because it was a true or false question in the quiz! You can follow him on twitter @Eatmymindquiz

Our quiz team comprised of Flaming Nora, Sunny Jim, Fat Brenda, actor Dave Dutton, Nikki Beresford and John Beresford. The team from the Coronation Street Blog, I'm very proud to say, won the quiz! We very narrowly beat the team from Conversation Street and walked away with the top prize of Coronation Street Monopoly (which had been supplied by two of our team members!).

We also won a pot of cash which we donated to the charity which Corriefest was supporting - Myeloma UK.

And then, finally, to bring the day to a close, the wonderful Sue Jenkins took to the stage. Sue played Rovers Return barmaid Gloria Todd from 1985 - 1988.

Sue Jenkins at Corriefest 2013 with David MacCreedy - co-director of Coronation Street 1977
Sue talked about being brought into Coronation Street for two episodes only while Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Lynch, was away from the show.  However, she made such an impression on the show's bosses that she was asked to stay on.  Sue is also the mother of Richard Fleeshman, and she was pregnant while she was working behind the bar at the Rovers. Richard, of course, went on to play Corrie's Craig Harris the Goth and is now playing on Broadway in musicals.

Sue revealed that she was in very much in awe of Julie Goodyear when she first started work on Corrie and even though she and Julie became very good friends over the time she was working on the Street, she always felt a little in awe of her. She told a funny story about being at a charity do with Julie Goodyear where Julie Goodyear introduced Sue as "my barmaid" even in real life.   It was fun to listen to Sue talk about her time on Corrie working with Julie Goodyear as Bet, while being overlooked by a huge mural of Bet Lynch on the wall of the pub.

After Sue finished, she took questions from the audience and posed for photos with fans. As well as being a huge Corrie fan, I was probably an even bigger fan of Brookside when it was going and to me, Sue Jenkins is better known as Jackie Corkhill. I would've loved to have dared ask her to say, just once, in that scouse accent she had on the show: "Drucks, Jimmy? Drucks" but it was niether the time nor the place!

And with that, it was time to head home.  Corriefest has been a wonderful experience and I do hope it'll run next year too.  With thanks to all at The Lass o'Gowrie for organising it for us Corrie fans.
