Last Christmas and other unexpected plot points

This year, the Christmas Day episode of Coronation Street opened with a choir singing a very nice accapella version of "Last Christmas" which was originally recorded by the pop group Wham, with lead singer George Michael. By the time the episode aired in the evening, the world had found out that George Michael had died so it was particularly touching. For me, more so because after hearing it a few days before, it had been stuck in my head for days! I wonder if that was an omen or just coincidence?

But on last night's Corrie in the pub in the second episode, the Wham version was played. That was a bit jolting and I wonder if it was dubbed in at the last minute as a tribute? Certainly, the day before, fans on social media had picked up on the coincidence. I found myself thinking surely they wouldn't normally have used the same song two days in a row?

In other surprises, I really never expected Maria to be sent to jail for the immigration charge. I don't think she'll be in jail for the whole year. I reckon she'll be out before Easter but it did seem a bit harsh sending a single mum to prison the day before Christmas for a non-violent crime. Surely they could have ankle-tagged her and let her stay home over the holiday?

Mary's story with her newfound son was my favourite Christmas storyline. It was really touching to see her smile when he introduced himself and called her Mum straight away and then seeing her face when she realized she was going to be a grandma went straight to my heart.  If she doesn't change her mind about moving to South Africa, I will miss her very much. Maybe she'll go and stay to see the baby born and after a bit, come back. I'd find a Weatherfield without Mary much lacking. I did feel a brief pang for Norris with another friend leaving him behind, after Emily's departure last year at New Year.

I'm sure Steve or Michelle mentioned that Liz was gone to Spain to spend Christmas with Andy but there she was on Boxing Day behind the bar. Seemed a bit odd that she wouldn't take a couple of extra days off.

Peter and Toyah? I find them an odd couple, too, though I did guess weeks and weeks ago that she was his new girlfriend. Toyah would have known about Peter's past and his faults through Leanne for years. I did enjoy her tearing a strip off Nick in the hospital but it got me thinking, what was it in their past for which  Nick thought Toyah was raking him over the coals? The only thing that came to my mind was him insisting Leanne have an abortion before he then left her back in the day. I know he's done other stuff but that, for me, at least, would have been the start of the "I hate my sister's partner" mantra. I do like both actors, however, so I'm sure they'll do the storyline justice.

I'm also concerned as to the 180 degree turn that Andy's personality has undergone. Murderous intent? Stashing a few packets of pills in a carry on bag three times the size of the doctor's bag from where he took the pills? Yet, no news of a drugs theft has made its way through the gossip mill, via Rana since she works there. Eva's bought Aidan a kitten. That's even more committment than he's ready for with her. He is in love with Maria but I notice he's not finishing with Eva now that Maria's been sent down. More and more I dislike that character as an arrogant, selfish prat but I don't mind the actor. I can see Johnny's point of view. Why would Aidan prefer Maria over Eva who's gorgeous and has a big, kind heart? I think it's the knight on a charging horse, saving the damsel in distress that's the attraction.

There's always a public argument so the Nick and Peter thing didn't bother me except to make me dislike Nick even more. It was nice to see a house full of Barlows. Nice to see Mary so happy with her friends being supportive. Sarah and Gary are on and off more than a light switch and that's getting tedious.  Eileen has proven her stupidity with men continues by proposing to Phelan. Billy had a revelation and is going back to the church. I think it suits him but I wonder if this is going to be the thing that comes between he and Todd permanently. There wasn't a lot of pubbage this year, I notice, which was different. There were a few scenes but in the past, quite a lot of action would be based in the pub on Christmas night and Boxing night.

Overall, though, Christmas on the cobbles was ok.

Pucker up, chuck! Bet Lynch most kissed Corrie waxwork

Legendary soap barmaid Bet Lynch is kissed so much by Coronation Street fans that bosses at Madame Tussauds are having to take special measures to protect her this Christmas.

The feisty barmaid appeals to all ages and genders. Whether a peck on the cheek from a young fan, a cheeky smooch from an ageing admirer or a fond farewell from an old friend, blonde bombshell Bet is a favourite for a little peck from visitors to the Madame Tussauds attraction in Blackpool.

The leopard-print clad pint-puller gets more action from kiss-happy fans at Madame Tussauds Blackpool that she even outshines beauties including Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Lady Gaga.

Being particularly popular, Bet’s figure has demanded a lot of attention from the studio team – making her the most retouched figure on display at the attraction.

Bosses at Madame Tussauds Blackpool say Bet’s figure is touched up at least twice as much as any other figure at the venue – especially at Christmas when mistletoe kissers pay the figure particular attention.

She’ll undoubtedly be one of the star attractions of the new Rovers Return’s Christmas On The Cobbles event, which sees wax figures of the biggest stars of the Street in a special Christmas scene at Madame Tussauds Blackpool.

Christmas tragedy for Bethany on Coronation Street

The second double issue of Inside Soap magazine is now in the shops and there's some Christmas cracker spoilers.  So let's crack on with them!

As we saw earlier today, ITV have released pictures of Bethany trying to seduce the gorgeous Gary Windass.

On Christmas Day, Sarah will read a text on Bethany's phone saying she's got a secret crush on Gary - who, let's not forget, is her mum's boyfriend. Bethany feels humiliated by this and turns back to the diet pills.

"The diet pills are definitely a cry for help," says Lu Fallon, who plays Bethany. And when Bethany is at her lowest ebb over the festive period, after swallowing more pills, she ends up face down in the ginnel, unconscious.

Let's hope the Platt clan will be able to leave their turkey and sprouts long enough to rescue her!

Coronation Street - the official advent calendar

The official ITV Coronation Street twitter account @itvcorrie have got a new advent calendar, with a difference.  Instead of just posting one picture every day (as we've done for years and are having a break this year!), @itvcorrie are posting a video every day.

Today's it's Sam Robertson and Rob Mallard, who play Adam Barlow and Daniel Osbourne in Corrie.  It's well worth a look, below:

Top 10 Christmas wish list for Coronation Street

Dear Santa

This Christmas on Coronation Street, I would like to see the following:

1. Rita singing in the Rovers.

2. Tim getting drunk and seeing Santa Claus sitting on top of Sally's conservatory roof.

3. Gemma getting tiddly on sherry with Rita in her flat

4. Jenny flaming Bradley snogging the face off Johnny Connor at the Underworld Christmas party.

5. Ken to make a full recovery and kick some butt in the Barlow house.

6. Mary and Norris to share a kiss under the mistletoe.

7. Number 6 repeated, this time with Freddie and Audrey.

8. Eileen to throw Phelan out on Christmas Eve, he has to wander the streets in the snow.

9. Gail's sprouts to be cooked to perfection

10. Snow. Lots of snow. There's nothing quite as magical as a Weatherfield winter wonderland.

But never mind me, what would make YOUR Christmas viewing extra special on Corrie?

Corrie's Michelle and Robert - mistletoe kiss or miss?

Ooh!  Today I got my hands on the first of the two festive double issues of Inside Soap magazine.  And what a joy it is, there are Christmas spoilers galore inside.  And so, without any further ado, here we go with some teasers of storylines in the run up to Christmas on the cobbles.

Michelle and Robert feature in the festive spoilers as the two of them become even more friendly than they already are.

With Steve having so much on his mind at the moment, he hasn't noticed that Michelle and Robert have become friends.  And while things between Michelle and Robert have been platonic so far - are things set to change this festive season?

When the two of them carry out a Bistro delivery together, they enjoy a laugh and there's a moment when something seems to pass between them, says Inside Soap.

Would pregnant Michelle cheat on Steve, though? Hmm...

Guess who goes after Phelan in Coronation Street?

Ooh!  Today I got my hands on the first of the two festive double issues of Inside Soap magazine.  And what a joy it is, there are Christmas spoilers galore inside.  And so, without any further ado, here we go with some teasers of storylines in the run up to Christmas on the cobbles.

Michael's fake son plans revenge on Pat Phelan.  "This is war," a Corrie insider tells Inside Soap magazine. "Andy is fixated on making Phelan pay."

When Gail and the Platt family head out to scatter Michael's ashes, they're told that the official cause of death for Michael was a heart attack. But Andy's not buying that and determines to pin the blame for Michael's death on Phelan.

Andy manages to piece together enough of what's happened to draw his own conclusions. He's just waiting for a chance to deliver his revenge on Phelan that will shock the Corrie villain to his core.

Coronation Street spoiler for Christmas Day

Well, we've known for some time that Toyah Battersby is returning to Coronation Street. And we can now reveal that Toyah will return to the cobbles on Christmas Day.

TV Times confirms this in this week's edition of the magazine.  They say that Toyah will be back on Christmas Day. But she doesn't return to support Leanne, it's the other way around!

Jane Danson, who plays Leanne in Corrie tells TV Times: "Toyah's going through some difficulties with her partner and Leanne will be involved in that."

But that's just the start of the Toyah's troubles. Jane adds: "Leanne has another sister in Eva, who Toyah's never met. It may be case of  'two's company, three's a crowd'.
