Maria cancelled by council in porn trolling scandal? Corrie Blog chats to Samia Longchambon

As temperatures rise for the summer season, so does the tension in Coronation Street. After settling more into her role on the council, Maria faces the wrath of internet trolls as she is subjected to an online hate campaign and gets more exposure than she bargained for!

Is Maria's council career going to be over before it's even started? Coronation Street Blog was pleased to be invited to chat with Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria, to learn about this latest issue-based and very serious social media storyline!

Hi Samia! It's great to speak with you again. Maria's really involved in her role as Weatherfield councillor. Can you recap on what's been going on?

Since joining the council, it's very much mission green: you sort of see her, initially, going up to people on the street, like Gail, to confront them about their recycling. She has an idea for everyone to have a separate bin to recycle glass bottles. She thinks of a great idea and tries to get everyone on board. The council agree but Maria doesn't realise it will be a lot more work for the binmen, who then go on strike. Nobody gets their bin emptied because of Maria, and the residents are unhappy with her!

What happens next?

Maria's doorstepped about the strike by a local journalist from the gazette. She tries to make her point, about how she going to get everything rectified and thinks she's given a great interview. Later, Kelly shows her an online viral video of the interview that has been mashed up and interspersed with rap music! Maria feels embarrassed and humiliated by this.

What effect does this then have on Maria?

It rocks her confidence - massively. Her heart is in the right place with it all - but it feels like everyone is laughing, and nobody seems to be taking her seriously. She starts snapping at people, becomes paranoid and shouts at Max. We don't know whether he holds a grudge or not yet.

Things go from bad to worse when she discovers a deep-fake* video of her that's been shared online. The video shows Maria’s head placed on a naked woman to make it look like she’s starred in a porn film!!
How does Maria find out about it?

She’s been hiding the first video from Liam (the rap mash-up) as she doesn't want him to see it. She then gets a call to say that Liam's involved in a fight at school, and she goes to pick him up. He tells her the fight was about a video he’s seen of her, but it's not the rap one, which Maria assumed -she’s mortified! The video looks like her - these deep fakes are very realistic. Maria then thinks the residents of Weatherfield, and her neighbours, will see it and think it’s real.

How seriously does she want to take this?

She wants to go to the police, but things take a turn for the worse. She becomes a victim of internet trolling - it gets so bad that she starts receiving death threats! Maria then tells Gary that now is the time to go to the police, as they can't ignore the seriousness of the death threats. She gets concerned about the safety of Liam and Kelly.

Maria gets enough courage to stay with the local council and organises a press conference about the recycle bin issue, even though the threats continue. How does she manage to continue with it, and why does she want to go ahead?

It takes a lot of courage for her to attend the press conference -She is terrified! Gary tells her he won't let anything happen to her, but he can't be with her 24/7. She is scared but concludes that she can't hide away and must stay to fight the fight. Maria remembers the reason she went into it in the first place, which is why she attends the conference and wants to rise above the internet trolling

What happens at the press conference?

Maria tries to stay on the recycling agenda - but she keeps getting asked about the deep fake video! Maria defers answering but then gets heckled and wound up by local council worker Jimmy (binman depot foreman) - whom Gary is standing near. Gary assumes this guy is the troll, so he lunges at him, puts him up against a wall, and narrowly avoids arrest. The press takes pictures of all of this, making a volatile situation worse.

Maria decides to withdraw from council life but is deterred from doing so by an unlikely source?

With everything going off, she thinks it's not worth it, affecting her family life, so she decides to withdraw from the council. However, she talks with Sally, of all people, she's very much #teammaria with it all, convincing Maria to stay on and continue to do something that she’s good at

Thank you, Samia!

Maria’s man-eating reputation has recovered over these past few years. Now a Weatherfield councillor, settling down with her blended family and married to Gary Windass. Will this internet trolling affect her in the longer term?

Keep watching Coronation Street find out!

Maria’s deep fake video nightmare begins in episode 106745 on Monday 27th of June 2022

*Deep-fake (also spelt deepfake) is artificial intelligence used to create convincingly fake images, audio, and video hoaxes via apps and programming.

Corrie Christmas Zoom! We chat to Samia Longchambon about Maria's Marriage and Rick's Murder!

Back in November, we joined a Corrie Christmas zoom session to chat all things festive with a few of the shows cast. In this interview actress Samia Longchambon talk's about Maria, marriage, and Maria's suspicions about Gary!

Q- Gary is called in for questioning by the police. How is Maria feeling by that point?

A - 'I doubt Maria is surprised by his actions anymore. We saw after the honeymoon, how she was questioning him about maxed out credit cards. Maria knows Gary has been keeping a lot of things from her and this is huge! She thinks he could be a lot of things but not a murderer! She wonders what is happening and if he is capable of it? The doubts are creeping in'

Q - Maria makes this discovery whilst walking in on a conversation he is having with Sarah, how does she feel about that?

A - 'Maria sees Sarah as a friend but is still quite cautious about their relationship. When she walks in and sees Sarah accusing him of killing Rick, she is taken aback by it'

Q-Do you think Maria could put her suspicions aside or is she pushed to the limit by Gary’s behaviour?

A -  'I think this is pushing her to the edge and it is not looking good for them. There is no level of trust and deep down she knows that he is hiding something from her. With the police questioning him, she has her doubts about Rick disappearing, and she cannot ignore them now'

Q- Does Maria think she would have a happily ever after when she married Gary?

A - 'I like to think 50/50, she did not marry him thinking it would go pear-shaped so quickly, anyway! At the same time, she knows what he is like; a bumpy ride but not this bumpy!'

Q - Kelly turns up and tells Maria that Gary is the only real connection that she has to her Dad, Rick. Why does Maria then invite Gary over with Kelly being there?

A - 'The whole business with the watch has got Maria suspicious. She overhears Bernie in Roys Rolls telling Brian that she had found it in the woods and Gary was trying to buy it off of Sarah - which she knew nothing about! Maria then finds out it was Rick’s! Kelly then has her suspicions which she tells to Maria, who then invites Gary over. None of it makes sense other than Gary having killed Rick, so she needs answers!'

INTERVIEW: Samia Longchambon - Secrets, lies, and wedding dresses.

With Gary, Sarah, and Adam tangled up in a very messy web, poor Maria has been completely left out of the circle. While Gary is off professing his love to Sarah, Maria continues to think she's found her soulmate, and is excitedly gearing up for their wedding day. With the heat being turned up on Gary, I spoke to Samia Longchambon all about secrets, lies, and wedding dresses.

Maria hasn't had much luck in her love life over the years, but now she's found 'the one' in the shape of Gary Windass. It's safe to say she is most certainly wearing her rose-tinted glasses. Speaking about the state of Gary and Maria's relationship, Samia said: "From Maria's point of view, they're in a good place and she's happy, and all that stuff with Ali's kind of disappeared and Ali's left so her head and heart now is just all for Gary."

Samia also firmly believes that Maria trusts Gary. "She's so silly, isn't she? Maria always wants the fairytale I think, and I think to some extent she thinks Gary's her Prince Charming because he's stood by her and he forgave her for her indiscretion, shall we say.

"As far as she's concerned, she trusts him and loves him and they're going to live happily ever after."

As is life in soapland however, fairytales very rarely come true. We previously saw Sarah lie as to why she was in the road which caused Gary to get hit by the car, and this raised huge suspicions with Maria. "It got a little bit awkward in the hospital", said Samia.

"Sarah's given her account of what's happened and Maria's just thinking, 'Gosh, Gary's a hero, he saved your life, that's my Gary, always does the right thing', and then Tyrone comes in and gives a bit of a different turn of events. That's a little bit of a red flag for her, but I think under the circumstances she kind of just brushes it aside."

As we all know, Maria is being kept in the dark so much that she would never think for one second that Gary is capable of murder. However, secrets do have a habit of coming out eventually in Weatherfield.

"I think she'd be obviously furious", said Samia, wondering about what Maria's reaction would be if she ever found out the truth. "She'd be devastated that she's potentially about to be married to a murderer, especially after what happened to her first husband, to Liam. He got murdered and then she got engaged to his murderer.

"She's not got a good track record with murderers and murdering and everyone dying around her. I think she'd run a mile if she actually found out the truth. I hope she would, but I don't know. You never know with Maria."

It's bad enough that Gary hasn't told Maria that he's killed someone, but it'd be a double blow if she found out that Sarah, of all people, already knew. "I think she'd feel really betrayed", said Samia. "That's something else now that Sarah and Gary have kind of got together, you know, they've got this big secret together that Maria's not part of."

Preparing for the wedding was not only thrilling for Maria, but for Samia too. She said: "At Corrie we get our hair and makeup done everyday religiously. I've never had to do my own Maria makeup, ever.

"It's a bit of a strange feeling sitting in your dressing room on your own where normally we're in the makeup room and it's bustling. I've been putting my music on on my phone just for a bit of noise while I do my makeup, or listening to a podcast or something."

As well as having to do her own hair and makeup, Samia also had a hand in choosing Maria's wedding dress. "I spoke with Alex, our costume designer, and we both agreed it shouldn't be anything too big and extravagant... Alex narrowed some choices down and we went into Manchester luckily just before lockdown. I got fitted for it and measured and everything so it was all boxed off before we went into lockdown.

"Alex found it and then it was pretty much off the peg, just like the first one I tried on and I was just like, 'Yep, that's it, that'll do". It does exactly the job for exactly what we needed it to."

One question remains: why is Maria so unlucky in love?

"Oh gosh, that's the million dollar question, isn't it? I think she doesn't learn from her mistakes. I think she trusts people too quickly considering what she's been through."

With all of Gary's secrets bubbling to the top, will Maria's wedding go without a hitch, or will there be fireworks?

Shock salon storyline for Maria in Coronation Street

Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor in Coronation Street, is training to be a reflexologist. In an interview with The Express, Samia says this about her training: ‘It’s given me a break from my own head’

And she also revealed in the interview that there's a twist coming up to her hairdressing storyline.

“Rita overhears Maria saying that she needs a new investor. Rita has come into a bit of money and doesn’t know what to do with it, so she sees Maria’s salon as a great opportunity. It feels like a proper old-school Corrie storyline, where the women are all bickering. I couldn’t ask for more.”

And it certainly looks like it's going to be a great storyline with Rita and Audrey fighting over Maria and the salon business.

You can read more on Rita and Audrey's bust-up over here.
