Corrie Comicals week ending 13 November 2020

Weatherfield has of course now moved into another parallel universe as the country enters lockdown except for a grimy Street in Manchester which appears to be not that aware of the previous rules on face masks, let alone anything else.  I almost feel sorry for those having to cope with rules that can change a thousand times between a scene being written and reaching our screen, but not enough not to point it out!

Anyway Eileen feels that Todd should be contributing - so once 10 am has passed he has to get off his backside and either do the cleaning or get a job (above).  Todd decides, jumps out of his chair and heads for the front door and job hunting!  What I could not work out is why the TV remote control was the other side of the room enabling Eileen to grab it and turn the set off.  If you are watching TV the remote is always close at hand because there is always something else worth watching in the breaks!

Mary is not at home so George Shuttleworth is watching "Vera" (a well known ITV televisual detective drama set up North) and as they are oft repeated decides that he has seen this one and tells Eileen the culprit.  He sees her face and immediately says he was joking.  Eileen is even more outraged that the concealer Sean has used on George is £35 so within a few seconds we get a whole range of Eileen's face pulling!

At the end of Monday Paul was very, very inebriated and had arrived back from the Underworld team bonding intending to do some Billy bonding.  Greg the Bishop was in the bathroom and Paul really needed to go - but has no memory of it the following morning as Billy advises him of his wish to force the Bishop (above) out of the closet.  However it only made this posting because it gives us another chance to see Paul in his wonderful unicorn sleeping apparel - it is certainly a coat of many colours and therefore might well appeal to the Bishop (although I believe that is a mistranslation as it was a coat with long sleeves).

Time for an Emmaism!  Fix has just encountered Emma and Amy being grilled by a local journalist interested in the Oliver Battersby family.  Fiz politely tells her to go forth and come back when emotions are less raw.  Emma thanks her for being (as it says above "dead wise.  Like a big owl or something."  I think Fiz is flattered!

On Wednesday don't blink or you will miss Dirk arriving on the left hand side of your screen, then hiding behind the stairs.  And if anyone has a floor plan for the factory please share because I have absolutely no idea how it is all supposed to fit together.

Steve has reached the end of the on hand library; together they have all read the Thomas the Tank Engine series and all of the Mr Men books.  Steve searches online and discovers that the original author of the latter, Roger Hargreaves, has died but that the series has been extended by his son Adam who apparently wrote "Little Miss Chatterbox".  Steve suggests that perhaps Emma should be responsible for reading that title (above)!  A quick search online is worrying as it shows that particular title was written by Roger Hargreaves - poor research but at least it made us all smile!

Gail is not a good place when she arrives in t'Rovers and asks for a very large g&t.  Now I have never poured a triple as offered by Jenny - but when she delivered it (above) I thought to myself that there is not much t in that glass - no bubbles.  And you always hand over the rest of the bottle of t to the customer!  Also given we are not going to pubs much at present I am really surprised that all the beers are "on" - but then I did say I would try and avoid such oddities!

And that just about wraps it up for this week on the Street.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 26 June

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

In a parallel universe where teenagers still take exams and it’s possible to book holidays, Amy is stressing about her upcoming RE exam so Steve offers to take them all on a family holiday to Cornwall. Unfortunately, Amy lets this slip to Leanne, who of course gets into a massive strop, because that’s her default setting.

Meanwhile Seb the Incredible Sulk is still sniffing around human chipmunk Alina and making lovely Emma feel uncomfortable. I honestly can’t think of a couple I care less about than Seb and Alina. Oh no wait I can…Fiz and Tyrone. Their latest storyline seems to be Fiz worrying that they’re middle aged and have no fun. I’m not really sure why this has suddenly become a thing? Fiz hasn’t been fun since 2002 and Tyrone is so dull that his missus turned to Kevin Webster for a bit of excitement, a man whose only topics of conversation are pies and spark plugs.

Over at the café, Shona has a coffee with Gemma who she has no memory of, despite them being from the same estate. Gemma tells her how good she and David were together, so Shona decides to order him to the café flat for a ‘date’. Once she’s got her bemused husband there, she gives him a beer, and starts taking her clothes off. That’s the second person she’s made a pass at in two days. I don’t know about you lot, but I had no idea that a brain injury turned you into a sex-maniac. Now that I’ve got all the facts, I’ve precariously balanced a few heavy jars in the kitchen and sent Mr Kelstar out to do the washing-up. Anyways, David turns down Shona’s offer of a bunk-up and she takes this pretty badly and throws him out. When she moans to Roy about it all he wisely tells her that it might be a better idea to take things slowly.

Also in the cafe, Nina, Toyah and Evelyn set off to lobby their local MP (I missed what they were lobbying for/against). After a successful and arrest-free protest, Toyah rushes off to join Imran for a mysterious meeting. It’s with a social worker to discuss her and Imran becoming foster parents. I’m all for this, firstly because I like these two and secondly because now they’ll surely have to move out of the Tardis which they currently share with Alya, Ryan, Craig, Lord Lucan and the Bolshoi Ballet, and get a home for grown-ups.

Finally, Leanne and Steve take Oliver to the hospital for his test results. Leanne is feeling positive, convinced that Oliver is showing signs of improvement and even manages to grudgingly concede that someone buying you a holiday might be quite a nice gesture. I’ve a feeling this won’t last for long though, as judging by the look on the consultant’s face Oliver’s prognosis is not good.
But we’ll have to wait until Monday to find out…

And that's it for tonight folks. Are you missing a bit of drama or did you like the slightly slower pace? Let me know in the comments or on twitter @mskelstar

Corrie Comicals week ending 6 September 2019

As I have previously said these posts are here to celebrate the likes of Mary and on Monday as they celebrated Craig's 21st Michael Bailey could not recall his - but Mary could.  She got summat special - glue ear!  Mary was at the centre of concern later on Monday as she once again was living in a mobile home - but this one was far from her previous luxury.  Sebastian as she called him later invited her to join him in living at Number 11 so Mary is not moving away.

And the other regular in this spot is of course Emma who reveals to James Bailey that she wanted to be a footballer once upon a time because of the free hats (above).  Well when she was younger she heard about hat-tricks and England caps so she simply assumed that footballers had a deal with hat-makers (which is a roundabout nod to an earlier Corrie story - when Gina Seddon made hats for Tommy Orpington of Weatherfield County).

Two seconds before this shot Hope had been tearfully assuring Fiz and Tyrone that she had nothing to do with starting the fire in the factory (the fact that she carries a cigarette lighter in her doll's head is no doubt an unfortunate co-incidence).  She is then sent to get Ruby and this huge smile spreads across her face as she revels in having fooled her doddery old parents once again!

Talking of faces.  Steve has just tried to pretend a handful of dirt from the Rovers plant pot has in fact  come from the Weathy County ground.  He has knocked earth everywhere and Jenny is cleaning up.  Tim dobs him in and Steve is blessed with the above look from Jenny! Not quite a Paddington Hard Stare - but close!

Amy has just reported that her dinner money account is empty and needs topping up - in the meantime she orders a couple of samosas and shish kebab from Alya.  Tracy tells Steve that dinner money is his department and he asks Tracy if she has any departments!

And we all thought that this story had been forgotten.  Remember Beth married Kirk bigamously as she was still married to Darryl Parkins and as far as Eileen knows (and us as well) she and Darryl never divorced?  At least one writer remembers this and I wonder if there is a pointer to a story about to arrive on the Street.  Anything which cheers up the currently depressed Beth would be welcome.

Extras at Work

Double dip this week.  First up an appearance by Bury FC football ground acting as the home of Weatherfield County.  Sadly this was no doubt filmed when the FC was in its death throes.  I have to say it was a very convincing piece of acting by the ground!  Really looked the part.  And the second dip was the performance by the security guard (above), played by Martin Miller, who did the decent thing and allowed Emma to spread her father's ashes inside the ground!

Sorry about not being here last week - will try harder.

Writers: Ian Kershaw & Alasdair Morrison (Monday); Susan Oudot (Wednesday); Simon Crowther (Friday)
Directors: Ian Bevitt (Monday); Sarah Kendell (Wednesday & Friday)

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 6 September

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

Over at the beard oil factory, sorry, cramped flat containing three adults and a six-month-old baby, Sinead and Daniel are bickering with one another over wedding plans, male grooming products and which should take priority. Daniel has booked a hotel room for their wedding night which inexplicably puts his intended bride into a sulk. I didn’t quite get the reasons for said sulk, mainly because Sinead is so dull that I feel narcolepsy setting in whenever she’s on screen. Large beard oil order? Just a registry office? Already married? Something…snooze…drool…something. The bickering turns into a big row, with Sinead accusing Daniel of acting too old. Which is ironic really as Sinead’s fashion sense and interior design taste would probably be rejected by Jane Austen for being a little bit too twee. Feeling unwanted, Daniel suggests they call the whole thing off.

Anyway, all this seems to give Mr Osbourne the perfect excuse to flirt with Bethany in the Bistro kitchen, (which is apparently staffed by robots as no one seems to be actually cooking in there). Her article has been rejected by the Gazette and because he has some sort of white knight complex, he phones them up and tells them how brilliant she is and how stupid they are for not publishing her. Overhearing him the two get close and almost share a kiss…

Meanwhile over-enthusiastic little sister Amy Barlow decides to invite Emma round for tea. It’s an awkward affair. Steve puts on a suit and shows her his Human League dance moves, while Amy and Tracey have laid on a ham sandwich buffet unaware that Emma is a vegetarian. When it’s clear that an embarrassed Emma can’t leave soon enough, Amy blames her mum. As Amy is really resembling Dawn Acton-era Tracy at the moment I was quite disappointed that she didn’t stomp off to her room to play her tapes and call Tracy ‘a rotten cowing tart’, but you can’t have everything. In the Rovers Emma unloads her Barlow problems to Audrey who tells her that Steve really isn’t too bad. Emma comes back to the flat and finally has a heart to heart with Steve. He tells her he was mad on Fiona and wishes things had been different. In a sweet scene which made me love Emma even more, she tells him he won’t ever replace her dad but they can be mates.

Over at the Bistro Ray offers Michelle the chance to run a Bistro-franchise in his hotels but makes it clear that it’s her ‘management skills’ he’s interested in rather than her shabby-chic averaged menu-ed restaurant. Hmm from memory Michelle’s CV reads: singer, barmaid, planned a couple of weddings, part runs a permanently on the verge of bankruptcy restaurant, so hell yeah, she’s definitely got the experience and business acumen run a chain of hotel restaurants. I think I’ve read that Ray is going to go all Harvey Weinstein on her which may burst her ‘I am the UK’s greatest businesswoman’ bubble. Then again this is Michelle we’re talking about so she’ll probably just conclude that she is irresistible to all men….and the UK’s greatest businesswoman.

In other news, grumpy Eileen can’t live with Mary and tells Seb he has to get her to move out. Luckily, she has a change of heart and Mary is allowed to stay. Which is obviously the right choice as Mary is the perfect roommate. I would happily binge-watch her dvd collection with her whilst wearing matching silver bomber jackets. And it could be a lot worse, you could live with vile Geoff who is making himself at home at No.6 by commandeering Alya’s old room for his magic equipment and persuading Yasmeen to get her granddaughter to return her keys.

Finally, after a chat with Beth, Sinead goes round to the Bistro to apologise to Daniel but clocks a yearning look between him and Bethany. She tells a nervous Bethany that she wants a word with her, but Bethany denies there are any feelings between them. Sinead then tells her that she has told Daniel that she has cancelled the registry office but their wedding is actually still booked and she is planning to surprise him.

As this is a soap wedding, I imagine it will all end in tears, death and possibly the world spinning off its axis and everyone plunging screaming into the abyss. Congratulations everyone. Enjoy the speeches and save me a sausage roll!

I've been Kelly, see you in a couple of weeks or catch my stupid mutterings on twitter @mskelstar
