Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 1 March 2024

Good evening.  This episode is Wednesday's - I was not here last week as there was no Friday episode so we are one behind where we should be.  In consequence Lauren has gone missing and no-one seems to care whilst Tracy goes missing as does Tommy Orpington, allegedly out to dinner together.  Apparently he is no longer a decorator but is instead now a coach to Spanish football academy and will fly Weatherfield to return to the game very soon (he could turn into Roy Kent in Ted Lasso where he will run across Stu in a completely different role).  Once Steve gets tipped the wink on Tommy's new job he cannot wait to tell Tracy - if and when she turns up - after all Ken and Amy want her to leave the family home.  I wonder if she fancies a trip to Spain as well?

With everyone on the Street knowing the real names of the people anonymised in the Chit Chat article Daisy decides that the best way to respond is to contact the magazine and point out that she has not signed any consent or release for her story to be used and is not amused.  They tell her there is little then can do but within minutes Bethany has had a phone call telling her that they are not interested in any future articles from her if she cannot provide reliable releases for the information.  Both Daisy and Bethany decide that it is all Daniel's fault an not only shout at each other but also at Daniel.  Daisy also reveals that Lauren was blackmailing her and Ryan, which Daniel did not know.  Later Daniel makes it up to Bethany a proper apology.

In the light of the visit from Family Liaison Nick asks Dee Dee for guidance on likely events around Harvey's apparent appeal.  Given her memory for dates and facts Dee Dee soon realises that Harvey's appeal is being managed by her partner in crime the solicitors - Adam - and they exchange words.  He knows about Ronnie's insider trading so she has to keep quiet on the appeal and he will not tell anyone about the insider trading.  Adam is chasing Harvey to deal with the removal of Damon now that the wheels are in motion for an appeal before it all goes wrong.  Harvey asks Damon to do a little job to provide him with some readies when he is released but Damon refuses saying he has made a promise to Sarah to stay on the straight and narrow.

Evelyn and Cassie are cleaning the house ahead of the return of Ty and Fiz which is apparently happening shortly.  Cassie has been half living in Ty's car (which one would think he would be using to collect his wife - but never mind) so cleans it up but pours diesel into the petrol car.  In an act of selflessness Kev drains the tank and puts things right as well as telling Evelyn that it was his mistake.  Cassie wrongly assumes that Kev was doing it for her (he was doing it for Ty) and makes various comments about a good man needing proper rewards - so will soon be in Abi's crosshairs!

The bullying story rumbles along.  Mason has ensured that Dylan does not talk to Mrs Crawshaw and once he finds his confiscated phone Dylan finds that Mason is leaving voice messages telling him to enjoy his time off and to keep his name out of it.  Maria makes it clear to Sean that until Dylan does the right thing they are both on the naughty step.

Apparently it has all crystallised badly in Glasgow with Crystal and Ryan returns having read Chit Chat - which as everyone keeps telling us no-one ever reads - even when Mary has sent the story link to the entire content of her address book.  Ryan tells Daisy that it went wrong with Crystal because he could not stop thinking about her and with a blink of an eye the two are re-united - despite any warning which Jenny might provide that this has all the hallmarks of a rebound romance.  Ryan also makes things good with Carla.

Is it just me or is it odd that Lauren and Joel have both vanished at the same time?  Some nice interplay between Tim, Steve and later Kev tonight.  I still think Cassie is too keen on Kev for Abi's good.  And if Ty and Fiz are back they were not on screen.

I won't be here next week even if Corrie is as I shall be in Iceland as part of my birthday celebration.  I hope I will get to see the aurora borealis but the forecast (yes they publish forecasts for it) are not looking great at the moment.  Also if I cannot get back due to any volcanic eruptions I might not be here the following week either!

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 26 November 2021

Kelly is sleeping rough on the Streets and has told Stu to get lost so it is no surprise when a passing drug dealer offers her something to make life easier.  She turns him down and later he is chased off by the returning Jacob (you remember Jacob [above] - he dragged little Simon into drug dealing and whom later Harvey Wallbanger wall-banged into hospital when he worked out that Jacob was ripping off the drugs he was supplying).  Jacob, some nine months, later appears to have fully recovered and warns Kelly off the first dealer who is delivering "spice" [Spice was banned in 2016].  Stu then turns up and Jacob departs leaving Kelly some tea.  She phones (how has her phone got any charge?) the first dealer and given by her wobbliness later has had the free sample as offered by the dealer.

Roy's departure is mentioned briefly and Nina has added more vegan options to the menu - I have mentioned recently that Roy's Rolls set is looking particularly worn so can I hope for a makeover - "Nina's Noodles" perhaps?  In the meantime I think someone needs to look at Roy's pricing as I am not convinced that Nina can make any money at the prices quoted on the boards.

Elsewhere Grace Vickers (remember her - Michael's ex and mother to Glory) is constantly arranging for the Bailey family to provide childcare - as Aggie alleges so that she can down expensive cocktails in a variety of City Centre bars.  Grace responds that she would not need to get some relief from childcare if the sofa in her free house was comfortable!  After some discussion Aggie agrees to fund a new sofa.  Much later Grace is enjoying a drink in the Rovers as Michael is looking after his daughter.   When she hears that Bernie wants to make Gemma's front room look better. Grace (above) makes it clear that for the right price she will soon be able to sell a new sofa.

"Influencers" are not people who have had the flu jab.  They are people who understand these ever newer methods of communication whereby you post a few pictures looking great and everyone rushes out to look the same.  Daisy is getting an online following.  Apparently she is posting pictures of her and Bertie and not making anything clear in the captions; so firstly she is appearing to be single, then she is appearing to be a parent - which of course makes her a single parent and of course everyone is amazed at how impressive she and the cute baby look.  So an "upmarket" baby clothes family sends over the latest collection in the expectation that she will dress up Bertie and undertake some of her impressive photo skills to give the brand a boost.  Which might be well and good if she had bothered to tell her "on" (but not public) boyfriend Daniel about it.  Which she does eventually and so he storms off and they are "off".  When he gets back to the flat they have a good old argument (and as my good lady wife pointed out she remembers Ken saying some very similar things to one Denise Osbourne) - before inevitably the passions are aroused and judging by the above they are back "on" (but not in public).

We are served a brief reminder that it is a year since Oliver left us and Steve, Leanne (above with most of the contents of Preston's Petals) and Nick are doing shift duties at the cemetery today.  This lead Abi to be one of the Sam sitters as she looks after the lad with Jack for a while.

Zeedan is still laundering cash (George and Eileen's meal - the former calls the latter "Eyelash") for his "former" father-in-law who is harassing Zeedan down the phone every chance he gets.  But he cannot take the daal van to a craft fair so needs to use the Speed Daal till; to minimise watching eyes he sends Yasmeen, Alya and Ryan for a spa day but Ryan returns and almost catches Zeedan in the money spin cycle (above) but Zeedan just about gets away with it - suspicions have been aroused I suspect.  Especially when he sees Hashim harassing Zeedan in Vicky Gardens.

Kevin feels that he and Abi need to break the constant cycle of talking and thinking about guns, Harvey, Seb, Kelly, Corey, Nina, Asha, Sam and Natasha.  Abi unwisely tries to get Sam talking by playing a game with him and Jack (who is about a foot taller than Abi these days).  When this fails to get Sam talking she eventually accepts the need to get away - as Kev puts it so romantically above and which they manage without quite crossing the rehabilitation of Kelly!

Ah yes.  Kelly.  Stu popped round to Nina's Noodles and tries to get Nina to rethink her position but Asha chases him off.  In these episodes Stu seems to have forgotten to cough - but we all know that he is not well don't we?  Kelly is staggering around and finds a mixed group of teenagers drinking and asks them for money.  One of them offers her money if she debases herself by begging (and by implication, worse).  Nina having rethought is walking along the same area and she can see Kelly being shouted at by the teen group as one of them pours a can of beer over Kelly.  We get flashbacks for Nina (in panic mode) of the night she and Seb were the object of pointless shouting and the violence which followed.  Eventually Nina (after calling the police she alleges) finds her voice and tells them to leave Kelly alone (above).  She gets her own abuse (back to the graveyard and similar) but she finds the strength to stand her ground and the group back off as police sirens sound and they walk away leaving Kelly having to find words to say just how sorry and thankful she is.  Nina admits that she has had time to think and with a wave of the wand Kelly is spirited to Alahan House and takes up the residence offered several weeks ago.

More seriously Nina was close to a panic attack earlier.  Tonight alone in Roy's Rolls she is expecting Asha who is late and is clearly exhibiting further symptoms of panic and all we can ask "is she about to feel further long term effects from the past few months?"

Tonight was written by Susan Oudot and directed by Clive Arnold.

Cobbles Couples: Possible, Present and Petering Out - Part 1

Anna, 48 and Kevin, 50 are the first of the possible couples to be placed under Weatherfield’s microscope. My sense about these two is that a relationship could work. There definitely seems to be a spark – not giant flames but a spark,  nevertheless. Both are single, both are hard workers, Anna has Faye to bring up, who has yet to pass through the often difficult teenage stage, but that is perhaps her only complication. Kevin has Jack. Anna adores children and as Faye is Kevin’s best friend’s daughter, he may know Faye quite well. Neither Kevin nor Anna are going to set the world alight with their intellect. Yes, they should give it a go.

As for Dev and Erica, another possible couple, I’m less sure. It is clear that Dev is rather enamoured of  Erica. Mary has noticed this and in the best interests of Dev’s twins, she has had a word with Dev. As regards Erica, it is not easy to read her. It seems, at the moment that she is not attracted to Dev. After the trauma of losing the baby and of breaking up with Nick, she may be wary of beginning a new relationship. My hope is that Erica, 50 and Dev, 51, do get together. Though Dev is quite a strong character, I think Erica will be a match for him. She is tough, independent, kind and level–headed. It will be important to Dev that Erica gets on with his children. Not wanting Mary to feel redundant or irrelevant, Erica would surely leave the day to day running of Asha and Aadi’s lives to Mary. It was touching in a recent episode to witness Erica’s kindness towards Mary. That it was noticeable is a condemnation of those who treat Mary as the cobbles’ joke: Norris and Tracy in particular. Mary is a litmus test, which Erica passed with flying colours.

Until last night’s episodes, I hadn’t really considered the possibility of Liz and Johnny becoming a couple, but it is looking quite likely, now. They seem at ease with each other, are on the same wavelength, and they’ve been round the block a few times. We’ve been with Liz as she has been round her block, but Johnny’s block is only just opening up for us. He must be about the same age as Liz too, perhaps a little older. (I can’t find his age anywhere!)

Sally would like her daughter Sophie to be in a relationship with Kate Connor.  The problem is that despite the fact that Sophie and Kate seem to get on, and there is a bit of a twinkle in both girls’ eyes, Kate is engaged and due to be married. My prediction would be a break up with her fiancée and the slow start of a relationship with Sophie. Both girls would have an amount of guilt to deal with though: Kate for hurting her fiancée and Sophie for moving on after Maddie. Perhaps she should have a word with Ken.

As for Aidan, I would guess that Eva will be the chosen one, especially now Sarah is pregnant, but there could be some interruptions on the way. Is Eva over Jason? Is Jason over Eva? My guess would be no, but as Ryan Thomas who plays Jason is leaving, at least for a while, he won’t be around. Perhaps Eva’s new relationship will be the cause of his departure.

All this is of course speculation, and I am just as happy to proved wrong as I am right.  All we can do is sit back and wait.

More to follow, when next, some present couples will be placed under Weatherfield’s microscope.
